Chapter 21
(Are you trying to rip me off)
Edmund had several histories if girls dumped by girls. He had money, good looks and a good temper yet they always dump him. He had thought he was fated to be alone all his life. When he saw her at the bar the other day, he felt strangely attached to her. He always find himself longing for her.
He drove into his compound happily that evening. Harriet had texted him to come home early to eat dinner.
He knocked and she opened the door smiling.
“Welcome home”, she said.
” Hmm”, he muttered.
“Go and shower. Dinner is ready”, she said.
He scoffed.
‘Why is she behaving like my wife? We are not even married yet. Did I said yet? I’m I planning to marry this kitten. Impossible.’
” You prepared dinner?”, he asked her.
“No. I got take outs”, she said sincerely.
” Harriet, you have to start paying rents. Are you trying to rip me off?”, he asked her. “You are rich for goodness sake.”
“I love free things”, Harriet said.
Edmund sigh.
” Whatever. Let’s discuss how much rent you will be paying later.”
He said and walk upstairs.
Harriet ignore him and start arranging the table.
The door bell rang.
Harriet wondered if he is expecting someone. She opened the door and a beautiful woman probably in her late thirties entered.
“Hello.”, the woman greeted.
” Hi. Who are you?”, Harriet asked the woman.
Could it be Edmund girlfriend? Didn’t he say he is single. Could this woman be the one crushing on him? Is she some lady that is trying to Se-duce him?
Harriet sized the woman up. She is pretty and mature. Is this Edmund type? Then Harriet noticed the woman is holding a flask.
She even brou-ght soup along. Harriet remembered the soap operas she’d seen before where spinsters will bring soup to the man they are dating at night. Is this the situation? Does this woman watch Drama at all? Didn’t she notice that those techniques don’t usually work? I get it, she is too desperate to cross out any option.
“I think I should be asking you that question, young lady”
Harriet rolled her eyes.
“Do you like Edmund?”, Harriet asked the woman.
The woman smiled.
” Yes, I do”
Harriet sigh.
“Of course. He is too handsome. He should have ladies crushing on him.”
“Pardon?”
“It’s not your first time bringing soup to him right?”, Harriet asked.
” Yes. He likes my soup so much. The weather is getting colder. So I decided to bring hot soup.
Do you stay here?”, the woman asked.
“Never mind.”, Harriet said.
” Mom?”, Edmund called walking down the stairs.
“Why are you here without telling me!”, he asked the woman.
” I wanted to surprise you! Can’t I see my own son again?”, the woman asked.
“I didn’t say that”, Edmund said and hu-g the woman.
Harriet could not believe this.
The young woman gave birth to him? How possible?
“Son, who is she? Your girlfriend?”, Edmund mum asked.
” Mum, this iz Harriet”.
“Harriet meet my mum”
“She is really your mum?”, Harriet asked.
” I got that question a lot. I gave birth early. At sixteen”, the woman said.
“I got married at that age after my man found out. I have a lovable husband you know”
“You gave birth at sixteen? Oh my God! That’s why you look so young and even got a handsome man as a son. So admirable. I want to give birth early too.”, Harriet sigh.
” I guess it is too late”, she added.
Edmund mum laughed.
“Mum, aren’t you ashame of telling people your age?”, Edmund asked.
” Ed, don’t call your mother mum when people are watching. It’s weird. You two looked like lovers.”, Harriet said.
“So you thought i was his girlfriend. That explains your behavior earlier”
Harriet was embarras-sed.
“I’m sorry if I was rude earlier.”, Harriet apologized.
” It’s okay. Do you stay here? You look like the madam of the house earlier.”, Edmund mum said.
“No. I was about to live!”, Harriet shouted.
” Actually, she had a situation”,Edmund said at the same time.
They both look awkward and Edmund mum looks like she is enjoying the show.
Harriet phone beeped.
It is a text from Harry.
“Good night. I nee-d to meet my brother”, And she rushed out of the house picking her car key.
Edmund mum laughed.
” So cute”, She said.
Harriet entered the private room. She hesitated when she saw Ray.
“Hi Harriet”, Ray greeted.
” Ray”, Harriet called.
She sat down.
“Where have you been?”, he asked her.
” I met my Mr Right. I’m living with him “, she said.
” What? You are living with a guy? “, both Ray and Harry asked.
” Yes”, Harriet replied like it’s nothing.
“I will introduced him to you guys one day”, she added.
” Hope he is a gentleman? Hope he is taking care of you?”, Ray asked.
“Why? Did you tell me you are engaged?”, Harriet asked.
” I’m not engaged. I’m serious “, Ray said.
” So who is Ava?”, Harriet asked.
“Didn’t you talk about a woman the other night?”, Harry asked him.
” Ava is the girl my parent introduced to me. They are match making us. And I have a girl friend. Her name is Dorris”, Ray said.
“I met both of them. Dorris is cool, not Ava”, Harriet said.
” Ava wants to marry me. I’m afraid she will go after Dorris. I’m scared i won’t be able to protect her from Ava”, Ray said.
“Ray, you shouldn’t be afraid of her”, Harry told him.
” I’m not afraid of Ava. I’m afraid of my parent. I’m afraid of what Ava will make them do “, Ray said.
Harriet sigh.
” I wonder why our parents are so concerned about family backgrounds. I wonder if the wealth they have is not enough that they keep on looking for more and they will even use marriage merge to do business? “, Harriet spat.
Harry kept quiet. He had no comment. He like the woman his parent had betrothed to him and he felt that it is a good thing meeting her and he will forever be grateful to his parents for letting him cross paths with the love of his life.
The thought struck him!
What if he is like Ava and Harley feels like Ray. Could It be that Harley did not like him? Did she have a boyfriend too? Did she dislike her parents too like Ray.
Could it be that she is at a club private room too talking to her friends about how much she hates him. About how much she loved her boyfriend?

(I will protect you)
Dorris got to the dorm and met a banquet of rose in front of her room. It had a message.
“Marry me Dorris”
Dorris knew who sent it immediately. What is happening uhn? Why did he keep mentioning marriage.
Why should they get married now.
Dorris took out her phone and sent him a text.
Dorris__you sent me flowers?
He replied immediately.
Murray__yes i did. Let’s get married Dorris.
Dorris enter her room. The cold is too much.
Dorris__Stop pouting nonsense. The first snow will fall soon. Shall we go on a date that day?
Murray__Ok. Will you accept my proposal then?
Dorris__Good night, Murray.
Dorris dropped her phone.
Why is she scared of getting married. It’s probably because of her career. She can’t get married_not yet.
She looked for a vase and put the flower in it.
“Thanks for this, Murray. I can’t accept your proposal_not now”, she muttered.
Harry smiled when she came out of the salon.
” You look pretty”.
“Thanks but I will rather you use ‘gorgeous'”
Harry smiled.
“Do you want to go shopping?”, he asked her.
” I don’t have time to waste shopping for hours. I will rather order online”, she told him.
Harry smile awkwardly.
He wondered how he is going to please her.
“Let’s eat lunch. I’m meeting someone later”, she told him.
‘ She’s meeting someone? Could that someone be him? Is he right? She really had a man?
Harry couldn’t concentrate throu-ghout the lunch. He couldn’t stop thinking about Harley probably not liking him.
Douglas was practically jumping all the way to Ashley’s place.
Ashley opened the door and Douglas walked before she could say anything.
” I didn’t ask you to come in”, She told him.
“I came in any way”, He said.
He sat down on her bed.
” You didn’t miss me?”, he asked.
“And why would I miss you?”, she asked him.
” You’re cruel, Ashley”
“I know. Leave Douglas. I’m not in the mood to spout nonsense with you”, she told him.
” You don’t even know my reason for being here.”
“I don’t want to know”, Ashley yelled.
” Ashley calm down and listen to me”, Douglas said, yelling too.
“No, you listen..”,
Douglas ki-ssed her before she could register what is going on.
Ashley allowed him to ki-ss her. It is not like she could resist him anyway.
Ashley knew she liked Douglas and she hated herself for admitting such a thing. For how long she liked him, she don’t know. All she knew is that she likes him.
” See that. Even if you are lying. Your body won’t. You have to date me Ashley. I won’t give up unless you do.
I just got a job as an as-sistant secretary. Don’t worry, I will make it to the top steady steady. I will take care of you and spoil you. I will love you with all my heart. Ashley, I will respect you and do all I could for you.
I’m madly into you, Ashley. There is nothing I can do about”, Douglas told Ashley. His hands wrapped around her wai-st.
Ashley buried her head in his che-st.
“Douglas, you young Idiot. I am afraid of public opinion. What will people say about us? How will your sister feel? How will your dad take this?
” Will people call me an old lady dating a younger boy?”, she asked.
“Ashley, you are only three years older than me!”, Douglas told her.
” I’m still your Older sister no matter what!”, Ashley yelled.
“I’m scared”, She added.
” To hell with public opinion. Who cares about it any way?”, Douglas said.
“I will protect you Ashley but for now we can start dating secretly. It will be fun. What do you think?”, Douglas said excitedly.
Ashley look up at him.
” Shall we?”, she asked.
“Yes, let’s”, Douglas said and hu-gged her.
“Breaking up is not an option”, he told her.
” deal”, Ashley said smiling brightly.
Harry picked the call. He had been expecting it for a while now.
“She really met with a guy?”, he asked the Person on the other side.
” Send those pictures!”, he yelled.
So she was really seeing a man. What will he do now!
His eyes darkened the moment he saw the pictures. See the way he is smiling at another man. She is always serious whenever she is with him.
Harry made a call immediately.
“Run a background check on him. Now!”, he yelled and drop the phone.
How pathetic he is. Liking a woman who had someone else in mind.
Vickey smiled when she saw the text.
Toby__let’s eat out
Vickey__It’s your treat
Toby__can we share the bill
Vickey__somebody has spoilt me. I now know how to eat free things.
Toby__? I have the capability. I will pay then
Vickey__ok. See you at 6:00pm.
Vickey had learnt to open up to Toby. She had allowed him in without knowing or is it intentional.
She knows she is already liking Toby and wants to leave their friend zone but she didn’t know how Toby feels about her.
Ray just finish calling Dorris, they’ve agreed to eat dinner out. He was rounding up his work when Ava texted him.
Ava__I’m in the lobby right now. Let’s go eat dinner.
Ray closed his eyes.
He texted Dorris,
Ray__Don’t wait for me. Eat alone.
He walked out of his office and entered the elevator.
He hope Dorris will agree to marry him soon. He is going to protect her at all cost. She should endure for now.
Ava was waiting at the lobby wearing a red coat and a black scarf around her ne-ck.
“Hi, Ray”, She greeted sweetly.
” I have an appointment with someone and you just make me cancel it. You should inform me before hand so that I will schedule things”, Ray told her.
“You will just have to cancel it like you did today”, Ava said.
” Don’t you think you’re being too much? I can deal with you well but I don’t just want to make things go complicated”, Ray said.
“I know. That’s why I’m doing this. Ray let’s really get married and I will allow you to date Dorris secretly till you get tired of her. Just let’s get married.”
Ray smi-rked.
He had plans for Ava. If she really won’t stop all this now, she is going to see his other side.
“Stop all this, Ava. You’re too pretty to for-ce yourself on a guy”, Ray told her.
” I’m too pretty to be rejected by a guy. Don’t you think so?”, she asked him
