Chapter 33
( You’re welcome, baby)
Edmund took out all the gifts he bought for Harriet parents.
“Why did you bring so many things?”, Harriet asked him.
” Is not yours, is it?”, he asked her.
She rolled her eyes.
The butler collected every thing from him immediately he entered the big living room.
“Oh my! My son in law bought so many thing”, The twin mother was pleased the moment she saw Edmund. She like what she saw.
Edmund smiled.
” Hello ma”, Edmund greeted,giving her one of his usual smile.
“You’re so handsome!”, The older woman said, leading Edmund to a sit.
” Wow! Is this him?”, Harry asked.
“Hello. I believe you’re Harry seeing how much you look like Harriet here”, Edmund said and stretched his hand for a handshake.
Harry did not take his hand. His eyes is busy scrutinizing his sister’s fiance.
” You don’t do handshake?”, Edmund asked.
“It’s not that I don’t do handshakes. I just don’t want to be too friendly with you so that you will not take my sister for granted. If you think you’re not ready for marriage, don’t marry her please. She has a lot of people that will gladly raise her child for her, you don’t have to worry about that. You can only marry my sister willingly. She is so precious to me and I really don’t want want to give her away to marriage so easily. Will you marry her willingly, to love and to care for her or do you want to back off now?”, Harry asked.
Harriet hits him with her fist.
Their mother was glaring.
His father clear his throats. He probably wants to say something but Edmund was fas-ter.
” I will not back off. I am going to marry her.”, he declared. “We’ve not known each other for long but I’m sure we will cope with each other. I will love her that all that matters.”, Edmund said.
The parents were very satisfied with Edmund.
” That’s a brilliant answer, buddy”, Harriet father said.
“Harry, you shouldn’t have make things awkward. What are you? Her father?”, The man asked Harry.
” You just made your sister feel bad”, Harriet mum said.
“I’m really sorry, Edmund”, The woman told her son- in- law.
” It’s alright ma. I will do the same if I had a sister.”, Edmund said.
The elders smiled.
They really like this son in law. He is sensible.
“Let’s eat”, Harriet mother said.
Toby knocked on her door. Vickey opened the door and he walked in.
” I’ve been calling you. You should answer your calls”, Toby told her.
“Who are you to scold me, uhn?”, she asked him.
” I’m your boyfriend!”,
“A boyfriend that even hides his family background from his girlfriend. A boyfriend who didn’t trust his girlfriend enough to tell her things about you. A boyfriend who is going throu-ghchallenges alone without even talking to his girlfriend.
I ba-red my self to you, Toby. Why didn’t you open up to me? We could do this together. I’m always available if you nee-d someone to talk too. You don’t nee-d to hold it in. Just pour out your heart”, Vickey told him.
” I’m sorry but I didn’t want to bother you”, Toby said. “And it’s nothing much”.
” But that little thing is eating you away. It’s turning you into a bitter person.”
“Can we talk about this another day?”, he asked.
” No procrastination. Let’s talk about it now”, Vickey said.
“Actually my mum met my dad when he is already married but she didn’t know about it. She loved him so much. He got her pregnant with me. She asked him to marry her but he told her that he us married and that if she is willing to be a mistress, he will take good care of her. She felt hurt and betrayed but she loved him to much to let him go. She gave birth to me and wanted me to own a position in dad’s company. She wants me to be acknowledged by that family as my dad son so she sent me to his house at the age of ten. I was abused by my dad wife and haras-sed by her children and whenever I told my dad, he will even beat me in their presence. They won’t call me my name, they will rather call me the illegitimate son.
When I told my mother about it, she asked me to try and endure. She said” you nee-d to take it all now for a better future”
Then she came to the house unannounced one day and saw how they were maltreating me, she took me along with her. The only thing my mum want is that my dad should acknowledge me and he never did. After All,he had capable legitimate sons. What did he nee-d an illegitimate son for?
Two years ago, his wife died and he wants solace from my mother that he had abandoned since she took me away from him. My mum moved in with him. I guess she was really desperate to turn wife. Maybe, if she found happiness, I would overlook it, but she was been treated lowly by my dad children and family. They are not treating her with any respect and My dad is not even doing anything about it. She said she is doing thus for me and I told her she don’t really nee-d to go throu-ghall those embarras-sment for me. I told her I don’t nee-d any thing from the man but she will not just listen. She keeps wanting me to come and see my father. She keeps telling me to come back to the house where I was maltreated. That’s what she came to tell me the other day and I flared up. If she loved him so much, she can be with him enduring all those Haras-sment but she should not try to talk me into coming back to that house. It is not my home”, he said.
Vickey held his hand in hers.
“It will be fine”, she kept repeating.
” Now that I have shared this with you. I felt relieved. It’s like I just drop a heavyweight. “, he said.
” yeah. That’s why it’s good to talk to someone.”, Vickey said.
Toby smiled.
He was happy to share this with her. He is going to tell her everything from now on.
“Thanks for listening to me”, he said.
” You’re welcome, baby”, Vickey said. Her eyes widen when she realize that she just use an endearment for Toby.
“Do you just call me babe, Victoria?”, he asked her.
She blus-hed.
” It is …..”
Toby shut her mouth with a ki-ss.

(I will never call you sister again)
Ava had been waiting for Ray in the lobby. He had been ignoring her calls and messages. She was angry. Is he trying to dare her. She will really tell his dad. But then, she’s afraid that if she informed his dad, she will not have anything to black mail him with.
Soon the executive elevator opened and Ray came out with Jerome.
“Hi Ray”, Ava greeted.
” What are you doing here?”, He asked her.
“You’ve been ignoring my calls, Ray”, she asked.
” I’m busy”, he replied.
“Let’s go to a cafe”, she told him.
” I’m busy, Ava”
“Just few minutes, please”, Ava said deciding to plead with him.
Ray wanted to decline but he decided to hear her out.
They were served their coffee.
” Ray, you are ignoring me again. Are you taking my words for granted? “, she asked him.
” I’ve been busy Ava”
“Ray, I missed you so much. Please don’t make me do mean things. I really love you. Just go out with me please. Can’t you just let go of her? Are you not tired of her yet? What’s so special about her? Do you want me to deal with her? Do you want me to make her leave you willingly? Are you testing my patient?”, Ava asked.
” Ava, shut up. What’s wrong with you”, Ray asked her.
“Listen carefully, I don’t like you. I will not go out with you anymore. I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore. I have no reason to go out with you anymore. Don’t come to see me again.
Come to your senses, Ava. I never asked you out so why should I go out with you?”, he asked her.
” But I want you”, Ava said tearing up.
“Do not touch my woman, Ava. I’m leaving now”, Ray said and walked out.
Ava clenched her fist.
How dare him walk out on her.
His woman? Did he know the consequences of his action?
Ashley is frustrated. She had complicated feelings. She thought what Douglas felt for her is just infatuation and that it will pas-s. She had decided to date because she knew that the more she play ha-rd to get, the more he will want her. She decided to date him so that his feelings will fade.
There are several boys like that that likes someone older than them probably because they grew up with that person and ended up being over protective or they admire the lady and wants to possess her. She practically grew up with Douglas and always treated him like a baby brother. She thought he is just lusting over her and that he will get bored and she will gladly let go of him.
Who knew his feelings for her will just get stronger. Who knew she will also fall de-eper too. And now, Douglas wants more. He no longer want to date her in private. He wants everyone around to know they are dating but is it really okay? Can she afford to pay for the consequences? What if Dorris feel betrayed and their relationship ended up straining? That will put Douglas in a tough sp-ot because she knew how much he loved his sister. Though Dorris is just two years older than him, she was like a mother figure to him since they lost their mother. Dorris had given up a lot of things for Douglas just like a mum will do for her children. Even Ashley admired Dorris, a friend she is one year older than.
Ashley sigh. Can she afford to risk so much for their relationship? She knew that if Douglas father and sister go against their relationship, Douglas is going to rebel and the relationship will keep on getting stronger. She didn’t want that. She will be a heartless woman if she cause separation in that happy family.
What to do? She likes Douglas so much. She is not going to admit that she love him. Ashley made up her mind. She is going to break up with Douglas. She will just remain his elder sister friend. That is the right decision.
Douglas saw the text message and rushed down to her the park near her place. That’s where she wanted them to meet. Douglas saw her already waiting for him.
“We should have just meet in your house. It’s cold outside”, Douglas said.
” Let’s go”, he added.
Ashley did not budge.
Douglas sigh.
“I’m sorry for the other day. Forgive me uhn?”, he told her.
Ashley ignored him. She sat down on a bench nearby.
” Sit down. Let’s talk”
Douglas sat down.
“We can just have that talk in your place, It’s too cold out here.”
“Douglas, let’s call it quit”, Ashley said. This was her decision. It’s kinda hurting her but she had to. What will people say about them.
They are going to mock her. She can’t gamble on her friendship and social relationship for a guy who might not be sure of his feelings yet. She is going to end this and move on with her life. She is very sure she will get over him soon. She is going to go on blind dates and party on lonely nights. She is going to pretend as if all of this never happened.
” Why?”, Douglas asked.
Ashley kept quiet.
“Because you don’t want people to know about us?”, he asked.
” Because you’re afraid of what people will say about us?Because you’re afraid of Sis reaction?”, Douglas asked again.
“Should I not worry?”, Ashley asked.
” I thought we are done with this.”, Douglas said.
“I’m afraid okay. I can’t….”
“Are you always like this, Ashley?”, he asked.
” You’re so selfish. Do you even consider my feelings when deciding this. You just came to this decision with only yourself in mind. You like doing things that will only benefit you?”, he asked her.
“Stop all this Douglas. Let’s stop this nonsensical immature relationship. Let’s go back to being brothers and sister”, Ashley said.
Douglas clenched his fist. Without warning, he drew her in for a ki-ss. It’s so swift that Ashley did not notice not to talk of resisting him.
He ki-ssed her till they were out of breathes.
Ashley could not talk. She hid her face in his che-st.
” I will never call you sister again, Ashley”, he told her.
Ashley swallowed.
She is already entwined with him, there is no going back. There is no looking back. She had to face this.
