“What! What is it? Common get out of here! Nkiru shouted and pushed Joe.
“Stupid idiot, who is your ma? She angrily said shutting her door as Joe staggered and left.
She sat on her be-d shaking her legs furiously thinking of what next to do,
“I’ll just keep calm and watch you Maria, you can’t possibly leave this house, all of you are supposed to stay un-der this roof and I’ll sure bring you back. That’s a promise, she said and left her room……….
Francis and Bridget were alre-ady friends. Sad about Maria leaving he called her up as he was driving home.
“Hey, is she gone alre-ady? She asked.
“Yea, I’m driving home now, he replied
‘Hey cheer up, from her explanation I think its best if she leaves. I want to believe there will be good opportunities there for her, Bridget said.
“But she was my friend and I’ll miss her. I didn’t want her to go, he said.
“What if she was married? You nee-d to get used to it because soon I know someone will take her for a wife. Too bad I couldn’t see her, Bridget said.
“Its okay, so will you be coming down for the weekend? he asked.
“Yes sure, I’m just doing some laundry over here then I’ll hit the road, she replied.
“Can i invite you home? plea-se, he said and she laughed.
“Okay if that will Cheer you up, she replied.
“Thank you so much, call me when you get to town alright, he said.
“No prob, she said and he dropped the call.
Victor call c@mĀ£ on phone and he picked up,
“Guy, Mark voice c@mĀ£ on phone.
“I just dey drop her off o, i feel like I’m having fever, Francis said.
“Why you too dey act like woman? Guy don’t be a witchcraft, that lady had to go abeg you should be happy for her, Mark said.
“Hmm I un-derstand but i was too close to her you know, Francis said.
“Get used to it, Victor shouted and Francis heaved.
“How fa with your project? Mark asked.
“You know mom just handed over the land yesterday for me, Francis replied.
“So? You no go start work? You too dey dull o, victor said.
“I wan start work like that ni? Where the money? Francis asked.
‘Don’t worry we dey come house make so we discuss Better. Buy drink keep o, Mark said.
“Where the other person? Francis asked.
“That mumu dey struggle for kitchen, he don burn food finish, Mark replied and Francis couldn’t stĀ©p laughing.
“Later Una show na, Francis said and dropped the call shaking his head.
He got home and met Joe sitting outside with his Hand on the cheek. He sighed and kills the engine thinking he’s sad about Maria leaving and c@mĀ£ out angrily from the car,
“What’s the matter with you? Why sitting as if someone died? Common go inside, Francis said but Joe said nothing.
“You’re lucky you’re my sĀ£nior, Franco said and attem-pted to go in but noticed the door was Locked.
“What happened? Who locked the door? He asked Francis but he didn’t reply.
“Mama! Mama! He shouted hitting the door and Nkiru opened up.
“Why the noise? She asked.
“I don’t un-derstand, you Locked Joe outside? Francis asked.
“So what if i did? Is he not of age to leave the house? She replied.
“Haba mama Maria won’t like this…… “And who cares! She’s gone right without my permission so who cares? This is my house and i owe no one an apology, She blurred out.
“So will he remain outside now? Franco asked.
“If he likes, she replied with a sm-irk and Francis heaved and went out to bring Joe in.
“Come in okay, Francis said to him but Joe said nothing. His hand was still placed on his cheeks looking lost and Francis gently took his hand off.
“StĀ©p looking this way okay, i apologize on behalf of mama and sister said i should take care of you, Francis said and Joe looked at him.
“Ma hates us, Joe said.
“Mama loves her children okay, let’s go in, Francis said holding him up but Joe shook his head.
“I..I..wan..t.to go, Joe said and Francis smiled.
“Go to where kwa? Who will take care of you? Abeg come in i have a lot to do today, Francis said taking him in while Nkiru gave a loud hiss when they walked in.
“Go to your room, Francis said to Joe and he slowly left.
“Mama have you heard of the word depression? I think Joe is slowly falling into it and our behaviour towards him is not helping issues, Francis said to her.
“What are you now? Motivational speaker or what now that…that the baby sitter Maria is gone, you’ve taken charge ba? She asked.
“Just to remind you that you have 3 children and Joe is not an exception, Francis said.
“plea-se don’t get me upset now, you cant call that abomination and disgrace p@rt of my children. Because of him i cant entertain guests in my house because of shame and you stand there to count him among my children, are you sound up there? you better go to your room o, Nkiru said and Francis heaved.
“Okay, what’s for breakfast? He asked.
“Good question, but you should have asked Maria when she woke up and dressed up, sprayed her perfume and brou-ght down her big bags down. You’re asking me what’s for breakfast because i look like a cook ba? Nkiru asked.
“But mama what if Maria was married? Have you ever thought about that because i don’t seem to un-derstand your anger about Maria leaving, Francis said and Nkiru began to laugh.
“If she was married will be letter, so let her get married na, what’s stĀ©pping her? She asked and Francis looked at her for a While and left for his room.
He dozed off at a point and had a call from Maria,
“Hey sis you’ve arrived? He asked.
“Yes i just did. I’ve been calling mama but she’s not picking up, where is she? Maria asked.
“I don’t know o I’m in my room, but I’ll let her know you arrived safely, He replied.
“Alright dear, take care care of yourself and the family okay, she said.
“Sure and you too, he said.
“I’ll call back when I’m settled, she said and dropped the call.
He cleaned his eyes and checked his time and noticed its approaching noon and was feeling hungry.
He left his room to Joe own and saw him in be-d crying.
“Hey what’s wrong? Hungry? He asked and Joe nodded.
“Okay I’ll go fix breakfast, i didn’t even know when i sle-pt off, I’ll be back, Francis said tapping him and his phone began to ring.
“hey are you in town? He picked up.
“Yea i just got in, so your address, she replied.
“Uhmm yea my address, he said and called it out for her.
“Okay I’ll be there soon, she said and dropped the call.
“$h!t! Francis said and ran downstairs to get the house cleaned up and arranged.
“Expecting someone? Nkiru asked when he met him mopping.
‘Uhmmm yes, a friend will be visiting, he replied.
“A friend? That’s definitely not the guys, she said.
“Yes, but they will be visiting too but later, he said and she sat down crossing her legs.
“And who is this friend? She asked and Francis sighed.
“Okay mom its a female, but a friend. I actually asked her to come around, he replied and Nkiru was quiet.
“Female friend? Like girlfriend? She asked.
“Not yet mama but you’ll see her soon and I’ll bet you’ll like her, Francis replied smiling and she nodded.
“I can’t wait, she said.
“Okay I’ll just hurry up because she will soon be here, Francis said and she slowly left for her room.
Few minutes later a knock c@mĀ£ on the door and Francis answered,
“Hey you made it. plea-se come in, he said when he opened up and Bridget walked in.
“Nice place you got, she said.
“Thanks but Not mine, credit goes to my super mom, he said.
“Wow is she home? She asked.
“Yes, and i don’t like you so don’t feel welcomed, Nkiru replied before Francis could, and they turned to see her standing on the stairs……..
