Episode 16.
Maria leaving the office to the car park noticed her ex was still lingering around.
She took her phone and pretended to be on call as she walks fast to her car while he ran after her for a word.
“Maria plea-se just 1 minute, he said.
“Yea, I’ve s£nt off the do¢v-ments, Maria continued with the fake call and got to her car but he seriously blocked her.
“Are you going to listen to me or not! He sternly said.
“Look I don’t give a damn and I have no such time to listen to you. Excuse me, she said and wanted to walk away.
“Okay fine, I knew you won’t listen to me but I had to go away to find answers and i found out its your mother. Your mother is a witch! He dropped and she st©pped.
“What did you just say? She asked looking at him.
“Hmmm that’s what I wanted telling you. You see…….. But heard two landing sl@ps on his cheeks cutting him short.
“How dare you, how dare you shameless bast*rd say that to my mother how dare you! For the fact that my mom didn’t like you doesn’t give you the right to call my mother a witch! Security! She screamed out and he c@m£ running to her.
“How did you leave a thief in here? Kick him out of here! She shouted on him and her ex gently raised his hand up.
“Its okay I’ll go. But Maria I pray you get out of this soon, he said.
“Get him out! She shouted and he left on his own while she hissed, got into her car and angrily drove off.
She got home and saw only Joe at home. She got a glas-s of water and drank and sadly looked at Joe who was watching the television.
“Its sad to see you this way everyday. A promising young man wasting away when your mates are outside alre-ady married with kids. What I’m i saying? I’m i even married sef? But what’s all this puzzle of my exs coming to me one after the other? She said to herself and sighed and called up Francis to know where he is.
‘Hello sis, he picked up.
“Hi, Joe is alone at home, where are you? She asked and Francis rolled his eyes.
‘Seriously sister you’re so used to me baby sitting Joe right? What if i was working? He asked.
“I only asked okay, she replied.
“I only had a stroll you know to relief myself from this morning heat, but I’ll be back, he said.
“Okay, can you drop by the mall for me? She asked.
“Oops i didn’t carry enough cash on me or my credit card, he replied.
“No problem then, see ya, Maria said and dropped the call and left for her room………
Francis was just at a quiet park relaxing and researching for his business project when he noticed a lady was also there very concentrated on her phone and made series of calls. With what he gathered he noticed she must be looking for a job.
He smiled shaking his head as he remembered the number of calls that has been made on his behalf by his friends, Maria and even his mom just for a job.
He took his eyes off her concentrating on his phone when he noticed someone was standing before him.
“Good afternoon, the job hunting lady greeted.
“Yea afternoon, he replied.
“Sorry plea-se can i use your phone for a short call? I just ran out of airtime, she said and he smiled and adjusted for her.
“Don’t stand that way come sit, he said and she sat down.
‘Sorry i heard you ma-king all those calls, it was quite disturbing though, he said.
“Really? I’m so desperate for a job. You have a company? Can you hire me? She asked and Francis saw himself laughing.
“Sorry but plea-se I’m so serious here, she said.
“I’m sorry I’m taking it funny because you see I’m in the same shoe with you. Its been 6 years jobless with a 1st clas-s, i un-derstand how you feel trust me, he said and her eyes bulged out.
“6 years? Like 1,2,3,4….till 6? Jesus that’s a lot for a 1st clas-s. I thought they always get most favored in the labour market, she said.
“Well that’s what they make us believe when we are scattered begging for even 50,000 naira job, Francis said.
“So how do you survive? She asked.
“Well i have a very supportive family and friends but I’m no longer comfortable. So I’m going into business, he replied.
“Great, i wish i can go into business too but the okrika i was doing ran into loss when i was not lucky to get good wears that will attra-ct people. So i left and bec@m£ an as-sistant teacher in a nursery school i was paid 15,000 naira a month. But the head mistress began owing us a lot and was even paying us half our salary, she said.
“What! For 15,000 naira you’ll be paid half again? That’s wickedness, Francis angrily said.
“Wickedness you say? She br@gs telling us to go if we don’t like it after all there are lots of applications on her table. My brother this country is ha-rd , but God will help us, she said and Francis shook his head.
“I cant believe this that someone will work for the whole month for a money that I use in recharging my phone and buying data? Gosh! Francis said and she heaved.
‘plea-se can i make the call? She asked.
“yea sure, he replied giving her his phone and she thanked him dialling a number.
“Hello uncle good afternoon, she said when the caller picked.
“Its Bridget uncle. Uncle about what we discussed last, you said i will hear from you soon but is 2 months alre-ady, she said.
“Uncle I don’t un-derstand why you’re upset not that I’m asking you for money. Dad only told you to help me out in your establishment and you’re keeping me hanging. But its alright, sorry for the disturbance, she said after a few seconds and dropped the call thanking Francis as she returned the phone with a moody face.
“Care to share? Francis asked concerned.
“That’s my father brother. He’s rich and can hook me up but he has been ignoring me for 3 years now. Okay imagine i once saw a new place and applied, that was about a year ago and my name was pasted for an interview. I was so scared and nervous and had to go to him telling him about it and maybe find a way to see how he can talk to anyb©dy there so i can have the job. He wasn’t even aware of the place and he promised to be there. On the day of the interview despite the crowd I saw him and went to him, he asked what I’m doing here when he alre-ady pla-yed the card for me. In fact he told me to go home and not waste my time because he has taken care of everything. I was so happy and foolishly left but heard nothing from the place nor him.
Then i decided to visit the place only to see people are alre-ady working, and to my surprise i saw his youngest daughter working there. I asked her when she started and she said about a month ago and it was her father that connected her there, Bridget narrated.
“What! Francis shouted and she heaved.
“I got home crying to my father teling him what his brother has done and he called my uncle. He began saying things i don’t un-derstand but my heart was alre-ady far and out from him. But recently my dad told me to try him again which i did, and now he is saying I’m disturbing him. There’s no problem but he will never see my call nor my face, She said.
“That’s sad, sorry to ask what is your father doing? Francis asked.
“He is a pastor in a rural area while mom is a trader. I’m Bridget by the way, she said stretching her hand for a shake.
“Francis, he said shaking her smiling broadly.
“Okay, i have to go now and thanks for the airtime and good luck to us, she said getting up.
“Yea and i have to go too. But can i have your number just in case i have the company, Francis jokingly said and she laughed.
“Make sure you remember me and amen to that, she said giving him the phone after typing her digits.
“Amen and thanks Bridget, Francis said and she smiled and left.
“Wow! Did i really talked to a Lady today? My guys must hear this, Francis happily said and dialled Mark number…………

Episode 17.
After 2 rings on phone, Francis remembered they should be busy in the office. He sighed and stood up to go home.
He arrived humming songs happily and met Maria setting the table,
‘And what’s ma-king him this happy? She asked.
“Its good to be happy, he replied sitting down.
“Wait until mom comes back, Maria said laughing.
“That joy killer? Francis asked.
‘Yes the 5million naira joy killer. You better settle things with her o so you can get the money, Maria said.
“Thats true sha, mom can be loving and annoying at the same time. What’s up for lunch? Francis asked.
“Asking like you married a wife here huh? Maria jokingly asked and Francis smiled.
“You know I spoke with a lady today, he said.
“So if you did? Maria asked.
“No you don’t un-derstand. Like its the first time…. There’s this feeling and attra-ction I felt even though she walked up to me first, Francis said and Maria st©pped what she was doing and looked at him.
“You said first time? Like the first time you’re having feelings for a lady? She asked and he nodded.
“Its too fast right? He asked.
“This is serious, so you mean you’ve never had a girlfriend? She asked and he smiled.
“Sis I’m surprised its the first time you’re hearing this. You know you’ll be the first to know if I have ever had, he replied and Maria sat down still surprised.
“Are you g@y? She asked and Francis bur-st out laughing.
“I’m not annoyed with that question because I’ve been asked that for years now. But not to worry, I have her number and i hope to start a friendsh!pwith her before I pop this up. But sincerely speaking sis I felt so free and relax with her and she did same too. Despite we just met she opened a lot to me like we’ve known before, that’s love right? Francis asked and Maria heaved.
“That’s great, and i wish you well with that, she said.
“Thank you. Are you still quitting your job or have you changed your mind? He asked opening his plate of food.
“Well my boss gave me a transfer instead and i love it, she replied.
“Transfer? Oh that’s great but to where? He asked.
“I don’t know yet but its definitely outside the state, she replied.
“I’ll miss you sis, who is going to cook now? He asked with a frown.
“God bless you have a girlfriend now so let her do it, Maria replied.
“But i just met her and she’s not a cook, he said.
“so I’m the cook? Great, Maria said.
“No sis, but i don’t un-derstand, why are you leaving? Is it because of mama? He asked.
“Mama can’t make me leave, I just can’t stand working in the same place with Sandra, she replied.
“Talking about Sandra, is Cyril back to his s-en-ses or still messing up? He asked and she heaved.
“From what i heard he’s back and Sandra wanted resigning to protect her family which the manager turned down her request, she replied.
“This is serious, did he explain his reasons for splitting you two? I mean you two were best of friends, he said and Maria sighed cleaning her face sadly.
“I miss her Francis but there’s nothing i can do. She hates me now and its un-derstood, i really nee-d a change of environment. Who knows the good opportunities waiting for me there, she said and Francis nodded.
“Whatever makes you happy sis, he said and she smiled tou-ching him.
“Enjoy your meal, she said.
“Hummm and I’ll miss this too, he said and Maria laughed and his phone began to ring.
“Hey the guys are calling, i cant wait to tell them i have a girlfriend alre-ady, Francis said laughing and Maria scoffed.
“A dream and upcoming girlfriend, she said.
“Wait and hear their reaction, Francis said and picked up…………
After Bridget left Francis, she took a cab to her parents house to see them,
“Another stressful day i guess? Her dad asked.
“Kind of, I’ve made hundreds of calls and visited places, she replied.
“Don’t worry something good will surely come up for you, the best for that matter but have you heard from your uncle? He asked and she smiled shaking her head.
“Dad i don’t have an uncle o, she replied.
“What did he say this time? He asked.
“That I’m disturbing him. Dad just forget about your brother there’s no point hoping on him, she replied and her mom walked in.
“How many times will i tell your father this same thing but he wont listen to me. He quic-kly got his daughter a job who just graduated but couldn’t speak up for you who has been waiting for years now serving his insulting children. Your brother is wicked and does not want your child to be like his and that’s it, her mom angrily said.
“Its okay, don’t bother him anymore if that is so. God will surely help you without his help and it will be soon, her father said and Bridget nodded.
“By the way, i saw a secondary school. My friend knows the principal and can talk to her if you’re interested. They pay 40,000 naira, her mom said.
“40,000naira? That’s manageable and yes I’m interested. I can submit the application tomorrow right? Bridget asked sitting up.
“Yes, but that means you’ll be staying with us because the distance won’t be favorable, her dad said.
“But I’ll go to town on weekends right? Bridget asked and her mom laughed.
“Tell me something, is there someone there you are not telling us about? Her mom asked and Bridget smiled.
“Ahhhh mommy you know i don’t always like it here, she replied.
“You have not answered my question and besides it’s not bad I’m asking when you’re ripe for that, her mom said and she rolled her eyes.
“Mommy no one for now plea-se, she replied.
“I’ll say Let her get a good job now for a start to support the young man whenever he will come, her dad said.
“Uhmmm I’ve heard o, Bridget said getting up.
“Where to? Her mom asked.
“To the kitchen na since you don’t want to give me food, she replied and went in……
2 weeks later Maria was alre-ady set to leave.
she brou-ght down her travelling bags and met every one at the sitting room waiting.
“Sis is this all? Francis asked after loading the last bag in the car and she nodded.
“Thank you, she replied and Francis hvgged her.
“Hey don’t you cry on me, I’m going for work and the pay there is good and yes I’ll transfer my promise to you okay, she said and he sniffed.
“Okay, he said and she hvgged Nkiru who was silent all along.
“So finally you’re leaving? You’re just too stubborn, Nkiru said and Maria laughed.
“You should know that mama but I’ll miss you so much especially your wahala, Maria said.
“I’ll miss you too, safe flight love, and may the good Lord continue to keep you safe, Nkiru prayed
‘Amen mama, Maria said and hvgged Joe.
“Make sure you take care of yourself okay, she said tou-ching his cheeks while Joe sadly looked at her and she smiled leaving the house while Francis followed her to drop her off the airport.
“Sis, I can’t believe I’m seeing you off, the house wont be the same again without your pres£nce, Francis said when they were at the airport.
‘Look Francis, i want you to use this opportunity and have a strong relationsh!pwith your brother. He nee-ds you now, you know mom doesn’t like him plea-se don’t desert him too, she said taking his hand with pleading eyes and he heaved.
‘okay sis I’ll try my best, safe journey, he said hvgging her and she left.
Nkiru was seen with a violent look in her room after Maria,
“why is this girl so stubborn? Despite all the stunts i put on the way she still succeeded to travel, who knows what will happen when i wont be close to her. She better be careful, else she will step on a deadly toe, she cant escape me, never! Nkiru said aloud.
“Ma! Joe called out and she turned looking at him with eyes sparkling with anger that made Joe tremble………..
