Episode 14.
Maria taking her shower to ease her mood, a call c@m£ on phone and she rushed out to pick it to see a strange number.
“Hello, she picked up.
“Hello Maria, its Cyril pastor, a voice said.
“Good afternoon sir, she calmly greeted.
“Afternoon Maria. Hmm you should know why I’m calling right? He asked and she heaved.
“Yes pastor, but sir I have nothing to do with this, I don’t have anything to do with Cyril believe me, She replied.
“Can I see you now? Though I’ll be meeting with Cyril and his wife later but I want to talk to you, he said.
“Okay sir I’ll be there. In the church right? She asked.
“Yea yes in the church. See you soon, he said.
“Thank you sir, she said and dropped the call.
She got into the shower and hurriedly c@m£ out, dressed up and left her room.
Getting to the sitting room she noticed Francis wasn’t there, though his gadgets and the book she met him with was still there.
She took the pen and dropped a message,
“I’ll be back Francis” and hurried off to the church.
She got into the pastor office and he calmly asked her to sit which she did.
“Maria what happened? Sandra c@m£ telling me things i don’t un-derstand and when i called Cyril he sounded so strange. What’s going on? The Pastor asked and Maria carefully told him the action Cyril pla-yed at work in the morning.
“I want to ask, did you know Cyril before now? The pastor asked and Maria bowed her head and nodded and the pastor sat up.
“But that was long ago, she added when the pastor gesture changed.
“Is Sandra aware of this? He asked.
“No, i felt there’s no nee-d to tell her and i didn’t want her to have any uncomfortable thoughts when we are around, she replied.
“I thought Sandra is your friend? You should have told her. Now this problem is out, will she trust your words that you have nothing to do with Cyril anymore? He asked.
“But i don’t and will Never do that to my friend. I and Cyril only met ourselves about 2 years ago after our campus days. I was so surprised he was Sandra husband and i was in a relationsh!pi thought was serious then. We never talked about this or have sat down together alone. Cyril love his wife and i can’t still fathom what’s going on and why his sudden attitude, Maria said and the pastor heaved leaning back on his chair.
“You know its about me right? This is the devil work, But i don’t un-derstand, what will the devil gain with this? Maria asked and the pastor smiled.
“Its not funny and you know it. Sandra called me a witch and a bad luck today, and I’m beginning to believe her. You know once she told me I’m innocent, but today she told me the bitter truth and i’m so done for. What the hell is wrong with me? i want to know! Maria shouted.
“Maria calm down okay, I’m no magician to give you an answer instantly, we have to pray, he said and she scoffed.
” I can’t believe after all the prayer we prayed yesterday this still happened. I think the magician way is fas-ter, she said.
“Be careful, nothing good comes from the devil, the pastor said.
“Then tell your God to do something or is he no longer the all powerful God I’ve been hearing for ages? She asked.
“Patience Maria is a virtue. Sometimes God doesn’t show himself in our own time but he will always be on time, the pastor replied and she nodded and bur-st out laughing.
“On time indeed. Probably when I’ve reached menopause then he will show up to claim one
Silly miracle he should have done years ago so people will applaud him powerful. I’m tired waiting for crying out loud! I’ve done my best and stayed faithful waiting on one invisible being that doesn’t care about me, yet things are going bad day by day. You know what, you and your damn God should go to hell! Maria shouted taking her bag.
“What! Maria wait! The pastor shouted getting up but she alre-ady slammed the door behind without looking back.
She arrived home late in the evening holding a bottle of wine ti-psy and Francis held her shocked to his bones while Nkiru slowly got the bottle from her.
“What’s this Maria? Nkiru angrily asked but Maria was laughing.
“Mama its fun, fun mama! She shouted staggering with Francis and fell on the concerned Joe who helplessly stood looking at her surprised.
“Take her to her room, Nkiru said helping Joe up from the floor while Francis struggled taking Maria up.
“This is serious, Nkiru angrily said to herself and left to her room.
“Sister why are you doing this? Francis asked when he took her in but she began to throw up.
“Christ! he shouted…………..
The next day Maria woke up having slight headaches and Nkiru walked in.
“You’re awake? She asked but Maria was quiet.
“Ada you’re too ha-rd on yourself, or do you want to die before your time? Nkiru asked tou-ching her but Maria slowly left her be-d looking herself on the mirror.
“I’m leaving the state mama, she said.
“What nons-en-se is that? And what about your job? Nkiru asked.
“To hell with it, she replied.
“To hell with what! Do you know what I did to give you that job? Nkiru shouted getting up and Maria looked at her.
“And what did you do? Last i checked i was the one with the files going round this state in search for a job, i ask again what did you do! Maria shouted back.
“Must i tell you everything i do? After all you were not even fit for that job, Nkiru replied and Maria smiled.
“Fine, this unfit being is quitting, deal with it! Maria shouted and left the room and Nkiru ran after her.
“Maria! You will never do such nons-en-se! You are going no where and you are not quitting never! Nkiru shouted at her in the sitting room and Francis ran out.
“You know what, Maria doesn’t care about anything anymore. Safe your saliva plea-se, my mind is made up. And since you know how to give good jobs, plea-se do same to Francis okay after all he is more fit. Excuse me, Maria said and left to the kitchen while Nkiru looked mouth opened………

“Mama plea-se for God sake its too early for this, Francis said standing on her way when Nkiru wanted storming into the kitchen to meet Maria.
“Get out of the way, she sternly said.
“What do you want to do in there? Beat her? Can we just take things easy? Maria is having a bad time alre-ady, you as a mother should know Better and find a way to resolve this rather than ma-king things more complicated for her. She’s a grown up and has every right to make any decision for herself, its time you let her breathe, Francis blurred out but got a sl@p summarizing his long talks and Maria rushed out surprised.
“What’s that for! Mark shouted.
“I sl@pped the idiot to reset his silly br@in back, what will you do? Oh you want to sl@p me back huh? Nkiru asked as Francis held his cheeks swelling up and left angrily for his room while Maria stood controlling her anger and went after Francis.
Nkiru hissed loudly and sat down alone in the sitting room
“Foolish children. All they know is to blab their mouth without knowing the sacrifices I’ve paid on their head. Go and resign na let me see if you won’t run mad, nons-en-se! She said shaking her legs angrily and left for her room.
“Francis you know you shouldn’t have answered her, Maria said to Francis when she saw him standing before the mirror.
“If not she’s my mother eh, I swear i for return am back. Which kind brutal sl@p for this early morning be that na? Francis asked and Maria t©uçhed him.
“Sorry about that, she said.
“But sister, why are you quitting? He asked taking his hand off his cheeks and Maria heaved.
“I think I nee-d a change of place. Here isn’t good for me, who knows the opportunities waiting to me outside, you can never tell, Maria replied.
“I know but you resigning is just too much, why not a transfer? He asked.
“I thought about it too but then i won’t have the patience to wait to be transferred. It may take a Month or so and I’m dying of leaving this place. Francis you won’t un-derstand, Maria said and Francis shook his head.
“What is really going on that i cant un-derstand? You’re hiding things from me you know, Francis said and Maria smiled tapping him.
“Thanks for yesterday though, Maria said and slowly left the room.
She sat on her re-ading table and sighed scratching her head thinking. She took out a sheet from an envelope and wrote down her resignation letter, inser-ted it in a letter envelope and heaved looking at it sadly…………..
Maria knocked on the manager office and walked in to see Sandra alre-ady seated there.
She calmly greeted them but Sandra didn’t look at her twice,
“Morning Maria, what are you holding? He asked.
“Oh Sir, i c@m£ to submit this, she replied stretching the letter to him.
‘What’s this? You don’t submit things to me, the manager said taking it from her and opened it.
He re-ad the letter and looked at Maria,
“Are you two joking or what? He asked and Maria looked at Sandra confused.
“I don’t un-derstand sir you mean?, Sandra replied.
“Why 2 resignation letters in one morning what’s this! Is this establishment a joke to you two! He shouted throwing the letters on the table and they bowed their head saying nothing.
“Sandra you just said your husband is back to you, but you’re scared of what happened yesterday to repeat itself that’s why you’re resigning. Now Maria what’s your excuse for this? He asked and Maria surprisingly looked at Sandra.
“Cyril is back? She asked.
“None of your business and he never left, Sandra replied.
“None of my business right? But i was the one embarras-sed and called a husband snatcher and you think i shouldn’t know? Maria asked.
“So you’ll do what? Go take his s-en-ses again right? Sandra asked and Maria scoffed.
“Oh this is so interesting, Maria said and the manager scoffed.
“You know i should be very happy 2 staffs are leaving on their own to safe my money monthly, but not every staff should leave the way you two planned to. This is way too childish for your positions here, he said.
“It wasn’t planned sir, especially not with her. I’m relocating with my husband, Sandra said.
“None of you will be resigning, he sternly said.
“plea-se sir I’m begging you, i really nee-d this. If i continue to stay here I’ll run mad, a change of environment will do me good, Maria said.
“Fine if that’s what you want, why not take a leave, go on vacation and I’ll un-derstand, he said.
“Sir, I wanted applying for a transfer but then i thought it will take a lot of time to get it processed and I’m so desperate to leave. I don’t want a vacation, plea-se grant me this one wish, Maria pleaded and the manager sighed hitting his pen on his desk looking at Maria.
“I still repeat, no one is resigning but since Maria has made mentioned of transfer I’ll grant her wish. Sandra you are going to stay, after all the main reason for your resignation and relocation is avoided right? The manager asked and Sandra looked at Maria.
“I had to protect my family from all possible danger and wreck, Sandra scornfully said and Maria gave a weak smile nodding.
“Well thank you so much sir, when I’m i starting? Maria asked.
“I’ll s£nd a message over and give you a feedback. So start arranging your office and br@ce yourself you’ll be heading a big position there, the manager replied.
“I’m honored sir, I’ll go get the office set for the replacement. Thanks again, Maria said giving a little bow and turned to leave but she st©pped and faced Sandra,
“It was nice knowing you friend, and i pray your family wont see wrecks again now i’ll be gone. Take care of yourself and your baby, sorry i heard that yesterday. Congratulations, Maria said and left the office………
Maria was busy at work when a knock c@m£ on her door,
“Come in if you’re good looking, she said without lifting her head.
“I’m i good looking? A familiar voice asked and she looked up and surprisingly saw her ex by the door.
She got chocked by her own saliva and coughed ha-rd which he quic-kly opened the water that was before her to drink.
“I’m sorry, he said when Maria was calm while she kept looking like she saw a ghost.
“What are you doing here? She finally asked.
“Maria i know i messed up, but I’m back trust me. I missed you, he replied and she bite herl-ips and stood up.
“I am very sorry, this Maria gat no time anymore for expired element like you. Now before i open my closed eyes, I want you out of my office before I’ll unleash the security dogs on you, she said.
“Maria listen to me there’s so much i Want to say to you, just hear me out i beg you, he said.
“I said get out! Out! She shouted pushing him and slammed the door behind.
“Damn you! Damn You all! She shouted in tears breathing ha-rd ………
