Ca-ssANO’S MANSION

MIKHAIL’S OFFICE**

He leaned back into his seat and raised an amused brow at the lady standing in front of him.

“What makes you think I will do as you want?”

“Because I know you want Diamond’s wish to be fulfilled. Besides, that’s the reason why you let me stay here in the first.”

“Why do you want the nanny fired?”

“I told you, she’s getting in my way of spending time with Aurora. Come to think of it, I am here now and can obviously take care of my niece. I don’t see why a nanny should be needed.”

Mikhail sat upright and took a swig of whiskey, straight from the bottle. “I don’t fuc-k ing trust you. Not after what you did years ago to my wife.”

“That happened in the past. I’m way past it already. And what, do you really think I will hurt my niece?”

“You can’t fool me, Lottie.” He snarled. “I don’t know why you want the nanny out of the house but I do know whatever reason it may be…it’s of no one’s good but yours.”

“Is that what you think of me? As a selfish bit-ch ?”

“Isn’t that what you are?” He retorted.

“Then what about you and Diamond!?” She threw her hands up in the air as if frustrated. “Weren’t you two selfish in the past?”

“Mind the way you talk, Lottie. I might be conversing with you calmly doesn’t mean I won’t snap out your neck the same way if you don’t control your damn tone or words.” He growled.

Lottie stepped back in fright, gulping nervously.

“I’m…I’m sorry for crossing the line.” She mumbled, lowering her gaze.

He took another gulp from the bottle and sighed. “I also want the nanny out of this house.”

Lottie shot her head up to look at him as soon as she heard his words.

“Really?” He didn’t answer. “What are you waiting for? Kick her out already?”

“It is not my decision to make.”

She frowned. “What do you mean? Aren’t you the boss?”

“I am but I wasn’t the one who offered her the job or hired her. If there is anyone who can get her fired, it’s my daughter.” He spoke.

“I…I don’t understand. What?”

“You are not dumb, are you?”

“N…No. But…but…Sh*t.” She ran her fingers throu-ghher hair.

“If you want the nanny out then make Aurora decide that.” He leaned into his seat once again. “You can get out of my office now, I’m busy.”

“Can’t you try at least?” She whispered.

“Get out, Lottie. I don’t want to repeat myself.”

Lottie knew that Mikhail’s kindness and calm tone were because of Diamond. He might hate her (Lottie) but nothing changes the fact that she was still the sister and only family of his late wife.

Hopefully, she is using that to her advantage however, she wasn’t dumb to know that there are some boundaries she shouldn’t cross.

She stormed out of the office.

LOTTIE’S ROOM**

Lottie entered her room and slammed the door shut very hard. She stood still for a while and then suddenly,

“Arrrrrrgh!” She shouted, knocking down the body lotion, make-up, and jewelry on the dressing table.

She balled her fist, digging her sharp nails into her palm.

She glared at her reflection in the mirror, breathing heavily.

“That little devil. If I can’t get throu-ghto you then I will have to take you out.” She uttered. “I. Must. Have. Mikhail. At. All. Cost.”

BFF’S APARTMENT**

Diamond and Elodie are both sitting opposite each other, both staring into their eyes, none of them saying a word. Ayden and Zara left the living room to give both mother and daughter some privacy. The silence seem long until Elodie finally broke it.

“Your wedding is in two weeks, what are you going to do about it?”

“I am not getting married to Felix.”

“You are kidding, right?”

“No.”

Elodie chuckled, looking away. “No, you must be joking.”

“I am not. I have no feelings for him. What I felt for him died five years ago.”

“What are you talking about? You accepted his proposal, didn’t you?”

“He lied.”

“What?”

“Felix lied to you and dad. We were never engaged in the first place. We broke up five years ago.”

“What are you saying!?” Elodie snapped. “You confirmed the engagement as well. How can you say he lied to your father and me? Can you even listen to yourself at all?”

Diamond sighed. “I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry for agreeing with the lie of your so perfect son-in-law but guess what, there is no wedding because I’m not going to get married to a cheating and lying bastard like Felix.”

“You lie.” Elodie growled. “Did you hear what I just say? You lie, Diamond. Do you know how many influential people are anticipating this wedding? Do you have any idea how much I wasted to get the most expensive hall in Mexico? Do you?”

“That is what you get for doing things that don’t concern you, mother.” Diamond said. “You should have asked for my opinion before going on with your plans.”

“Listen, I don’t care what’s going on between you and Felix but one thing is for sure, you are going to get married to him.”

“Didn’t you hear what I said? Felix cheated on me with his best friend five years ago which led to our break up. I am not going to marry him. Never.”

“Does it look like I care? I guess he cheated on you because of your stupidity and stubbornness.”

“What?”

“Which man in his right senses will choose you over other girls out there, huh? You are damn lucky to have a man like Felix flaunting around you. Because trust me, you don’t deserve a good man like him.”

Diamond wasn’t surprised her mother was saying all this. She expected them from her and of course, the woman didn’t disappoint.

The moment she saw her mother standing on the stairs, she knew exactly what brou-ght her all the way from Mexico to Las Vegas. It’s been such a long time since they both saw each other and it will only be a dream that her mother will come to visit simply because she missed her.

Diamond once wished things will change for the better between her mother and her while she was still a kid. She even went as far as praying to God but nothing ever changed between them instead, it grew from bad to worse.

Diamond learned the ha-rd way to live without the love of a mother.

“If a good man requires the qualities of Felix then I will rather want to be with a bad man.” She abruptly stood up. “I have work to do.”

“Come back here, we are not done talking.” Elodie yelled, coming up to her feet as well. Diamond stopped walking but didn’t turn around to face her mother. “So this is your plan, isn’t it?”

“I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“You do! Your intention is to embarras-syour father and me amongst our friends and top politicians in Mexico. You don’t want to get married? And then what happens to the preparation and invitation?”

“Point of correction, I never asked you to do any preparation or invite anyone to a damn party that wasn’t going to take place. You should have asked questions first before doing as you so please.”

“Watch your tone, young lady.” Elodie warned, menacing. “How do you think your father is going to react to this news? Do you think he will be happy about it?”

“Maybe not but at least he would understand and support me unlike you.”

“Listen very carefully,” Elodie pointed her index finger at her daughter. “I won’t let you embarras-sme again. It is either we prepare for your wedding or your funeral, you make a choice.”

“What kind of a mother are you?”

“Excuse me?”

“I just told you that Felix cheated on me and all you could think of saying is that he did so because of my stupidity and stubbornness? You blame me for his unfaithfulness. Have you ever considered my feelings? Do you even care about me at all? Or better yet, do you regard me as your daughter?”

“Do you know the day I hate to this date?” Diamond clenched her fist, knowing the next words of her mother. “The day you were born.” Elodie spat coldly. “I wish I had ab-orted you the moment I found out about the stupid pregnancy. You are a curse to me.”

“Ho…how can you say this?” Diamond could feel the walls she built around herself as a form of protection against her mother’s harsh words crumbling. She could feel herself becoming too weak to fight back.

“Do you know what I went throu-ghbecause of you? I was ridiculed, mocked, hated on, and abused. I almost committed suicide and it is all your fault! Why did you choose to torment me like this? What sin did I commit in my past life to be given a child like you!?” Elodie sniffled. “You are a bad daughter. A curse. You are the product of ra-pe. You,” She pointed at Diamond and said her next words, looking right into the girl’s eyes. “are the beginning of my misery. I wish you could just die or disappear from the surface of this world. I wish you never existed at all. It is better to be barren than to have a daughter like you.” Elodie grabbed her handbag and headed towards the door. She twisted it open and then glanced back at Diamond who haven’t moved an inch from where she had been standing. “You are a failure and a disgrace to me. Get married to Felix or seize to be my daughter.” She stormed out of the house.

Just as the door slammed shut, Diamond broke down in tears.

Memories started flooding back, hitting her in the face to the point of making her blind.

The past was here to haunt her and this time around it came in form of a dagger stabbing into her chest intending to kill her.

Ayden and Zara descended the stairs and moved toward their best friend.

“Diamond?” Zara called softly, holding back her tears.

Diamond sniffled and wiped off her tears. “I…I should go.”

“But…” Zara began.

“I’m fine. I will end up getting fired if I remain here.” She turned around and left the house.

“She’s not fine, right?” Zara asked Ayden.

He shook his head looking very sad. “She’s not.”

ROADSIDE**

Diamond sat on a roadside bench, staring at the cars, buses, and people going back and forth in a flash.

★“You are a bad daughter. A curse. You are the product of ra-pe. You are the beginning of my misery. I wish you could just die or disappear from the surface of this world. I wish you never existed at all. It is better to be barren than to have a daughter like you.”★

Elodie’s words echoed in Diamond’s head, bringing back unwanted memories.

Diamond shook her head vigorously, and started laughing, grabbing the attention of pa-ssers-by.

“I need a drink.” She muttered having stopped laughing.

*****

ZODIAC CLUB**

“A bottle of tequila, please.” Diamond ordered as she slide into one of the island chairs.

“You mean a shot, right?” The bartender, Jerry, asked.

She shot him a glare. “A bottle. I’m going to pay for it. Or do you have a problem with that?”

“Uh…no. Of course not.” Jerry pulled out a bottle of tequila and handed it over to her. “Are you getting the drink for a party?”

“I’m going to drink it myself. Now can you just mind your damn business?” She popped the bottle open and took a large gulp of tequila.

Jerry watched her quietly as she went on drinking without stopping.

It was too early to take such a strong alcoholic drink but it seems like the girl doesn’t give a fuc-k about that.

DIEGO’S HOUSE**

There was a knock on the door.

The maid rushed to open it. “Sir Felix.” She smiled.

“How are you?” He asked, stepping into the house.

“I’m fine, sir. They are both in the guest room. The third door at your left side.” She directed.

Felix nodded. “Alright. Thank you. And oh, here is your madam’s handbag.”

“Okay.” She collected it.

Felix went upstairs following the description of the maid.

**

GUEST ROOM**

He knocked once and then entered inside.

Diego was ma-ssaging Layla’s legs as she was still sleeping.

“Mr. Diego.” He called, smiling.

“Oh Felix, how many times have I asked you to stop calling me that? Just Diego will be fine.”

“Oops, it escaped my mind.”

“Hm,”

Felix glanced down at Layla. “What’s wrong with her?”

Diego let out a de-ep breath and shrugged. “She has a fever.”

“Fever? How?”

“I don’t know. I returned home last night and found our bedroom a mess. She broke the mirrors and turned the bed upside down. We had to sleep here because of how awful the room was. According to the maid, Layla cried for six hours straight. I had to call the family doctor who sedated her and made her fall asleep. He a-ssured me by this morning she will be fine. Well, she’s yet to wake up.”

“What? I didn’t know all these happened.” Felix said.

“I know.”

“Oh my God. Is the fever gone now?”

“Yeah.” Diego placed his palm over her forehead. “I guess. By the way, why are you here?”

“I came over to return Layla’s handbag. She left it at my house when she visited yesterday.”

“Speaking of which, did something happen between the both of you?”

“What…do you mean?”

“Because I think whatever happened to her began at your house. I’m not trying to accuse you of anything don’t get me wrong, I am only trying to understand what went wrong, that’s all.”

“Well…not out of the ordinary happened while she was at my house.” He lied. “She didn’t even stay for too long and she left in a hurry.”

“She didn’t say where she was going to?”

“No.”

“Hmm.” The man sighed, getting up from the bed. “I should go shower, I will be right back.”

Felix nodded and watched Diego leave the room.

“fuc-k .” He ruffled his hair, gro-aning. “Why did you have to do this to yourself, Layla? fuc-k ing why?”

He got interrupted by the buzzing of his phone. He took it out of his pan-ts pocket and stared at the caller ID, it was Elodie.

He quickly answered the call. “Mother.”

“We need to talk, Felix. ASAP.”
