( MIDNIGHT GUEST )

«MIKHAIL’S OFFICE»

“I’ve made the appointment, boss.”

“Very good.”

“Boss, if you don’t mind me asking,” Marcello hesitated. “do you believe everything Octavius said?”

Mikhail tilted his head to the side, “Do you doubt him?”

“Octavius betrayed you once. I won’t be surprised if he does it again.”

“He won’t be able to. Octavius can be anything but definitely not a bad father.”

“Miss Chase is his stepdaughter. He won’t care for her as much as he would if she was his biological daughter.”

Mikhail rose to his feet and walked to the drinks bar, he pulled out a bottle of martini.

“What are you trying to say in essence, Marcello?” He co-cked a brow, popping the bottle open.

“We should be careful with him.”

Mikhail smirked, took a large swig of the martini drink, and goes back to sit down behind the desk.

“Do not worry yourself, Marcello. I won’t repeat the mistake I made once. You have nothing to worry about.” He said.

Marcello bowed his head.

“Okay, boss.”

“Get the car ready. We are leaving for the club in ten minutes.”

“Yes, sir.”

Marcello headed towards the door and just when he was about to turn the doorknob, Mikhail stopped him from behind.

“Marcello,”

“Yes, sir?” Marcello partly turned to face his boss.

“Octavius might be a jerk but,” He paused. “Rhodes is not. He cares about his stepdaughter regardless of their DNA. And that’s why I believe him.”

«DR. JOHN’S HOUSE»

Diego strolled inside the house, looking so dull and lost in thoughts.

John and his wife were having a conversation in the living room when they noticed his presence.

“Diego?” John called out, standing up slowly. “I thought you’d gone back home.”

“Hi, Diego.” John’s wife, Selene greeted him with a smile on her face.

Diego forced a smile on his face and sat down on the couch miles away from where the couple was seated.

“Is anything the matter? You don’t look too good. Is Layla okay? What happened?” John asked worriedly.

Selene got up. “I will go and prepare breakfast. But first, do you both need a drink?”

“Yes, please.” Diego muttered.

“Alcohol, right?”

“No_” John answered at the same time Diego answered,

“Yes_”

She stared between the both of them and sighed.

“I’m sorry, honey. But I will go for Diego’s answer. He needs the drink.”

“It is too early to drink alcohol, Selene. Bring him something else. Coffee? Hot chocolate? I don’t know. Whatever. But definitely not an alcoholic drink.”

“I’m sorry, Diego. The doctor has spoken.” She left the living room and disappeared into the kitchen.

“Was that necessary? Really? Selene was right. I needed the drink.”

“If you want to get drunk or commit suicide, go to your house and do that but not in my house.” John sat down back on the couch. “What happened?”

Diego heaved out a de-ep breath, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

The doctor knew exactly what his friend was talking about so he decided not to act clueless.

“It was only right for Layla to tell you about the pregnancy herself.”

“Do you think the baby is mine?”

“You have every right to question the pregnancy. But believe me, every mother knows the father of her child.”

“I don’t know if I can forgive her, you know. The scar she left in my heart is still there. The heartbreak, pain, and everything haven’t faded away.”

Selene returned with two mugs of black coffee and handed each to her husband and Diego.

“There you go.” She smiled at Diego. “John told me what happened between you and your wife,”

John immediately looked away, avoiding Diego’s gaze.

“Just give her a chance, okay? I don’t have the right to say anything or include myself in the conversation but here is something you need to know.” She placed her hand on his shoulder and squee-zed lightly. “You’ve got everything under control. And I know you are one to make the right decisions.” She pulled away from him, taking a step back. “I will leave the both of you to continue your discussion.” She left the living room once again, going back to the kitchen.

“You told her?” Diego questioned.

“I’m sorry, man. But Selene is my best friend and I literally tell her everything.”

“Wait, I thought I was your best friend?”

John chuckled. “Yes, you are. However, Selene is also my best friend and my wife, life, and happiness. I don’t want to keep anything away from her.” He explained.

Diego nodded his head, gulping a small amount of coffee from the mug, and then hissed at the bitterness.

“fuc-k . This coffee tastes like my current situation.” He cringed. “Very bitter.”

John cackled up, shaking his head at his friend’s silly remark.

“You know, if you doubt Layla, why not take a paternity test when the pregnancy gets to seven weeks?”

“That’s too far.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

Diego nodded his head, giving him permission to ask his question.

“If you find out that the baby is yours, what are you going to do about it?”

He was quiet.

He didn’t think about that.

Yes, he really wanted a baby with Layla. It had always been his dream from the very moment they met and got married.

But with all she has done, does he still dream of having a child with her?

“Yes.”

“Yes?” John repeated in confusion. Little does he know that Diego was answering the question he asked himself in his head.

“I want to have a child with her.” He muttered. “I love Layla so much. I really do.”

“Then let go of the anger and pain. Do it for the sake of the unborn child and the love you have for her.”

“It is not that easy, John. Besides, what if the baby isn’t mine? What if it belongs to Felix? Huh?”

“Then do whatever you want with Layla and Felix. I will support you.”

Diego quietly stared at John’s face, he was de-ep in thought, thinking about what the doctor has just told him.

(“Then do whatever you want with Layla and Felix. I will support you.”)

‘As much as I want to hurt Felix and make him pay for destroying my marriage, I don’t want Layla to get hurt.’ He thought, drinking the black coffee. “Oh, Yuck.” He scrunched up his nose, dropping the barely touched cup of coffee on the table. “I don’t think I can keep up with drinking this.

John laughed. “Then don’t drink it. Selene won’t mind.”

«NOON ★ BFF’S APARTMENT»

“Are you going to the hospital now?” Ayden asked, taking a sip from the coffee mug.

“Yes. What about you?”

“I will drop by later in the evening. I have something to deal with.”

“Is it work?”

He nodded his head. “Yes.”

“Alright then. See you later.”

“Yeah…”

She headed for the door and left the house.

[ANNOUNCEMENT: WHEN RHODES IS WITH MIKHAIL OR OTHER MAFIA BOSSES, I WILL REFER TO HIM AS OCTAVIUS. DON’T GET CONFUSED]

«ZODIAC CLUB»

Mikhail and Gregory were having a conversation in the office when they heard a knock on the door.

“Yes?”

The door opened and Marcello entered,

“What is it, Marcello?”

“Octavius is here.”

“Let him in.”

“Okay, boss.”

Marcello bowed his head and then left the office.

Gregory raised a questioning brow, staring at Mikhail.

“Octavius?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“That bastard. You finally found him?”

The door flew open once again and Octavius walked in with his hands stuffed inside his pocket.

His eyes fell upon Gregory at once. He gulped hard, looking away immediately.

“I didn’t know the Russian mafia will be joining us.” He mumbled.

“Are you surprised?” Gregory growled, standing up to his feet. “Do you how long I have been looking for you? Do you know how I desperately wanted to find you and hurt you in so many ways?”

In a flash, he threw a heavy punch in Rhodes’s face.

“Ow.” Rhodes hissed, staggering back. “What the fuc-k ?”

Gregory yanked Rhodes by his shirt, glaring ha-rd at him.

“You bastard! Where are my shipments? Answer me.”

“I don’t know what you are talking_”

The Russian mafia threw another punch at the man’s face, cutting him off.

“Don’t you fuc-k ing lie to me, you ingrate. I ask again, where are my 25 billion shipments? Where did you hide it?”

Mikhail remained seated, watching the scene unfold in front of him whilst smoking.

“I didn’t take it.”

“Are you going to keep lying?”

“Julius did.” Mikhail suddenly said, grabbing the two men’s attention.

Gregory pinched his brows together, turning to face him.

“Julius?” He repeated.

“Yes. You must know him.”

The Russian mafia loosened his hold on Rhodes and took a step toward Mikhail.

“Julius Santiago? Is that who you are talking about?”

“Yup.”

“What? That’s impossible. Why will he steal my shipments?”

“He used Lottie. I’m sure you know who that is as well.”

Gregory swallowed nothing, lowering his gaze in embarra-ssment.

“You don’t have to feel embarra-ssed. I am not judging you. However, what made you so sure that Octavius stole your shipments?”

“Someone sent a note to me informing me that Octavius was the brain behind the stealing.”

“And you believed?”

“What do you have me do? Not believe? I didn’t know who to blame, okay?”

“Seat.” Mikhail moved his gaze to Octavius who was wiping the blood beside his li-ps. “You too.”

Octavius and Gregory sat down in front of Mikhail.

“How do you know that Julius and Lottie are involved in this?”

“I was there when they both made the deal,” Octavius said in a mutter.

“What? How does Lottie even know a man like Julius? I don’t get it. And why was my shipment involved in their stupid deals?”

“For Julius to kill Ca-ssano’s wife, Lottie will help him steal your shipment.”

“Julius was the one who killed Ca-ssano’s wife and not you?”

Octavius nodded his head.

“Wow. I thought there are no secrets in the mafia world but I’m so wrong. But that doesn’t make any sense.”

“Why not?” Octavius asked.

“What does Ca-ssano’s wife have to do in this? How does any one of them benefit from her death?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Mikhail glowered, frowning at Gregory.

The man hesitated, staring between Octavius and Mikhail as he tries to work out the connection.

Realization finally hit him.

“Lottie asked for the death of your wife and in return, she will help Julius steal my shipment. But wait a minute, does she know you? Why will she ask for your wife’s death?

“My wife and Lottie are sisters. And the bit-ch is obsessed with me.”

“Это безумие.” (This is crazy). Gregory said in his native tongue. He balled his fist. “Where is Julius? Where is that animal? What did he do with my 25 billion shipments?”

“I don’t know. But I do know where he is.” Octavius stated.

“And that brings us to why I asked the both of you to come here. Since Julius is still alive… Two things are going to happen; Lottie will go back to make a deal with Julius again. And she will come for,” His gaze fell on Octavius.

“…my stepdaughter.” Octavius completed the sentence and Mikhail gave a firm nod.

«TINY APARTMENT»

Lottie was humming a song, wiping dirt off a gun while watching the live video of the ward.

The nanny and Zara were having a conversation and Aurora was fast asleep on the hospital bed, curled up in her nanny’s arms while Evelyn was reading a book.

Lottie’s phone started ringing.

“Geez,” She dropped the gun on the table and drew out her phone from the back pocket of her pan-ts, and picked up the call – she was using a burner phone. She has destroyed her old phone and sim card so she doesn’t get tracked down.

“Hello?” She said.

“Ma’am,” A de-ep masculine voice said from the other line.

“Have you gotten everything ready?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Good. We strike at midnight.”

She hung up the call and let out a de-ep sigh.

“This is going to be fun.” She smirked, almost turning around but stopped when she caught sight of an additional familiar face in the ward.

The smirk on her face dropped and anger flashed in her eyes.

“What is Aria doing there?”

•••••

«IN THE WARD»

Evelyn furrowed her brows as she dripped the book she was reading aside and got up to her feet.

“Who are you?” Diamond asked, staring at the young lady.

“Hi. I am_”

“Aria,” Evelyn stated.

“Ye_ Yes. You still remember.” Aria gave out a nervous smile.

“Um, I don’t think I know you,” The nanny said, turning to look at Evelyn. “Do you know her?”

“Yes. She is Lottie’s best friend.”

“Lottie’s best friend?” Diamond repeated. “What are you doing here? Did Lottie send you to finish what she has started?”

“No, no, no,” Aria quickly shook her head. “I promise I am not here to cause trouble. Lottie doesn’t even know I am here.”

“What do you want?” Zara asked, holding her best friend’s hand in an attempt to make her feel secure and protected.

“I came to see her,” She nodded her head at the nanny. “and to apologize for what my best friend did.”

“Apologize?” Diamond scoffed. “Do you think apologizing is going to repair anything? Listen, tell your best friend to keep hiding in that damn hole because I swear, I will kill her if I ever set eyes on her.”

“I get it, Miss Chase. You have the right to be angry.” Aria said.

“Where is Lottie now?” Evelyn asked. “Where did she run off to? You are her best friend so you should know.”

“I wish I can help but I’m sorry, I don’t know where Lottie is. She ran away the day Mikhail came over to search for her in my house. I haven’t seen her since then and she hasn’t called me either.” She purposely left out the part that Lottie, her best friend was threatening to kill her.

“Wait,” Zara cut in, looking at everyone in the room. “What is going on? I keep hearing Lottie this, Lottie that. How is Lottie involved in this? What is going on? Is there something I should know?”

Everyone stayed quiet.

Zara glanced at Diamond,

“Diamond? Are you going to start talking or keep sulking?”

Diamond swallowed nothing and tightened her arms around the little girl but not ha-rd enough to hurt her.

“Lottie was the one who stabbed me.”

“Huh?”

“I’m sorry for not telling you and Ayden. I just… I still haven’t processed the fact that she would be hurt because of a man. Does that even make sense?”

“What man? Did you snatch her boyfriend?” Zara queried, trying to maintain her calm.

“My boss. Lottie has some kind of feelings, I don’t know if it is love for my boss. And… And she caught us in the pavement, having,” She glanced at Evelyn and Aria before saying, “s-ex.”

Evelyn’s eyes wide-ned.

“You had s-ex with the boss?”

Diamond stared at the little girl to be sure she was sleeping and then she nodded her head.

“Yes.”

“Wow.” The woman exclaimed, sitting back down on the chair.

“Lottie is obsessed with Mikhail_”

“Wait,” Zara cut in. “Mikhail is Diamond’s boss, right?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. Continue.”

“So, Lottie has been obsessed with him for a very long time. She thinks the feeling is love but even a blind man will see that it is not.”

“Is that why she almost murdered my best friend? Is she mad? I will kill her, I swear.” Zara fumed.

“Listen, I only came here to see how you are faring because I will be leaving town.”

“Why?” They asked in synchronization.

Aria shrugged slightly.

“My life is not safe here anymore.”

«MIDNIGHT»

The day went by in a flash.

The discussion they had with Aria was still replaying in Diamond’s head.

Evelyn and Aurora went home in the evening at the same time Ayden came by.

They told him everything and he was pissed off like them.

Her mother also dropped by but didn’t spend twenty minutes before leaving.

Zara and Ayden also went home, although they were forced by Diamond.

As for her stepfather, he didn’t come by. He must have his reasons so she didn’t think so much about it.

However, her boss who haven’t come by was what was bothering her. Does he know she is awake? Or does he not care?

Diamond lay on the bed, in the dark room, gazing at the ceilings like it was the most interesting thing. Actually, it was the most interesting thing at present.

She was bored and sleepless.

She has a lot to think about but at the same time, she can’t seem to organize her thoughts.

She still hasn’t remembered how she got to know Lottie.

But… The blonde girl,

‘Who is she?’

‘Why did I call her Diamond?’

‘What were we running away from?’

She pondered, creasing her brows in confusion.

She heard the creaking sound of the door, and that pulled her out of her de-ep thoughts.

Diamond knitted her brows, moving her gaze to the door, wondering who it was that will come here by this time.

Her eyes wide-ned when she saw the intruder. The person was wearing a black hoodie and trousers. And judging by the physique of the person, it was a man.

How was he able to bypas-sthe guards?

Was he here to kill her?

She almost started panicking but compose herself and gather her courage.

“Who are you?” She asked. “What are you doing here? What do you want? Did Lottie send you here?”

The intruder didn’t answer. Instead, he dipped his hands inside the hoodie pocket and started drawing out something.

‘Knife? Does he want to pull out a knife from his pocket?’

‘No, I’m not going to die like this.’

Diamond squee-zed her eyes shut and screamed at the top of her lungs.

“Ahhhh.”

TBC.
