( FLOWERS/ANONYMOUS )

«IN THE WARD»

Diamond was staring out of the window whilst seated on the bed.

Her black hair was let loose to fall on her back and shoulder.

Fortunately, she could move her body unlike when she first woke up from a coma.

She can’t still believe that she has been in a coma for over three weeks.

That was such a long and scary time.

How come her family and friends didn’t give up on her already? She wondered.

Diamond heaved out a de-ep sigh and mentally face-palmed herself.

How could she play such an expensive prank on them as soon as she woke up?

How could she worry them more after all they have been throu-ghbecause of her?

How could she hurt them?

‘I’m so foolish.’ She thought, biting her lower li-p and staring at her lap.

The door flew open, grabbing her attention.

She looked up to find angry-looking Zara approaching her alongside Ayden and Sean.

“Diamond, I swear I’m going to kill you.” She raised her hand in the air close to Diamond’s face, Diamond squee-zed her eyes closed, ready to feel the impact of her best friend’s palm on her face but instead, she felt warm arms wrapped around her body, embracing her. She slowly peeled her eyes open, not expecting that.

“Zara,” She called softly, shocked.

“Do you know how worried and scared I was? How can you play such an expensive prank, huh? Do you think it was funny?” Zara cried.

“I’m sorry. I should never have done that. I have no excuse to give. I’m sorry.” Diamond apologized in a low voice, wrapping her arms around Zara’s body.

“I missed you so much. I was so scared that you will never wake up or remember me again. You know how much I love you, right? You know how much I care for you. I don’t think I can live without you.” Zara said, still holding her friend in her arms.

“What about me?” Sean whispered.

“Diamond comes first, sorry buddy.” Ayden patted his back gently, smirking.

The door opened again and Lake entered, holding a plastic bag in his hand.

“Hi, everybody.” He waved.

“Babe!” Ayden said excitedly and rushed towards his boyfriend, giving him a quick peck on the li-ps. “I didn’t expect you to come.”

“How can I not come? I’m even mad at myself for coming late.” His gaze came upon Zara and Diamond who were still hugging, crying in sync. “Diamond is awake?” He moved his eyes back to Ayden.

“Yeah…”

“Wow. That’s amazing. I’m sorry for not being able to come over on time. I should have been here with you. I’m sure you needed a shoulder to lean on but I wasn’t there. I’m sorry.”

Ayden waved him off as he collected the plastic bag from his grasp.

“It’s fine. You must have been very busy with work.”

“Yeap.”

“Hi, Lake.” Sean greeted.

“Sean, how are you doing?”

“I’m good.”

“Have you two made up?” He gestured at Zara.

Sean’s cheeks turned red and he grinned.

“Yes. How did you know we were_” He stared at Ayden and the realization hit him. “Yeah, of course. I get it now.”

Ayden shrugged. “What? You can’t blame me. I don’t keep secrets from my baby boo.”

“Lake, you are here too.” Diamond smiled as Zara finally broke the embrace.

“Congratulations on coming back to the land of the living,” Lake said.

Everyone laughed.

“Thank you.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t come earlier, though. I should have been here.” He mumbled.

“You don’t have to apologize, Lake. You are here now. And besides, I didn’t even notice.”

“That’s true. She has been sleeping like a log of wood and when she eventually woke up, she played a stupid prank on us.” Zara pouted.

“She did? What kind of a prank?”

“Before we go into detail, what did you bring for us?” She asked, raising a brow.

Ayden goes throu-ghthe plastic bag and a smile appeared on his face.

“He bought KFC chicken.” He announced.

“Seat comfortably, I will personally tell you the full story of everything that has happened.” Zara winked.

“Babe, don’t do that.” Sean pouted.

Everyone stared at him.

“What?” She asked.

“Don’t wink at anybody. Do you know how hot you are when you do that?”

Diamond rolled her eyes, hiding her smile.

Lake chuckled, shaking his head while Ayden scrunched up his nose, frowning at the couple.

“Baby,” Zara stepped closer to him and encircled her arms around his neck. “I love you so much and I belong to only you.”

“I love you so much,” Ayden goes to stand beside Lake, wrapping his arms around his torso.

Zara and Sean ki-ssed and so did Ayden and Lake.

“Ugh. Okay, I am happy for you all. But can you stop the oppression? I am still a patient recovering from getting stabbed.” Diamond gro-aned.

Nobody answered her.

They ignored her. Each of them was talking to their partner, laughing loudly.

It was silent until,

“Ahh, guys!” Diamond screamed in pain, touching the exact place she was stabbed.

They all pulled apart to attend to her.

“Are you okay?”

“What is wrong?”

“Where does it hurt?”

“What happened?”

Everyone panicked and asked at the same time, looking so worried as they all rounded her bed.

Diamond cleared her throat, sitting upright.

“I finally have your attention.” She smirked. “I refuse to be oppressed.” She added with a scowl on her face.

«MIKHAIL’S ROOM»

Mikhail snapped his eyes open, breathing heavily.

He was sweating profusely and his hair was all over the place.

He looked around the darkness, squinting his eyes a little bit.

He couldn’t get his brain to function properly, and his mind was still focused on the dream he just had.

As much as he tries to reason everything, it still doesn’t make any sense.

Why would his late wife turn into his daughter’s nanny and introduce herself?

How the fuc-k did she get into his dream?

Why was he even dreaming about her?

It’s crazy.

Mikhail gro-aned, getting up to his feet, and stepped out of his room, grabbing a black robe on the way out.

He wore the piece of material over his broad and masculine chest and walked into his office.

He doesn’t want to go back to sleep and have that stupid dream of his daughter’s nanny again.

Mikhail grabbed a bottle of tequila from the drink bar and went to sit down on the couch in the corner of the large office.

He popped the bottle open and took a large swig, gr-unting at the back of his throat.

His head aches and he fuc-k ing hates how he feels right now.

«HOTEL ROOM»

Elodie and Rhodes entered their hotel room, both looking totally stressed out.

Elodie dropped her handbag on the couch and goes to sit down on the bed.

Rhodes took off his shirt and strolled inside the bathroom to take a quick shower.

Twenty minutes later, he stepped out of the bathroom, dressed in a white t-shirt and black shorts.

“Are you going to explain everything to me now?” She asked just as he was about to climb the bed.

“What exactly do you want to know?” He questioned, sitting down beside her.

“Everything. But you can start with what happened to Diamond. How did she get stabbed while working as a mere nanny?”

Rhodes hesitated as he cleared up his throat, ruffling his hair.

“She was stabbed.”

“Mistakenly?”

“No. It was on purpose.”

“What!!” Elodie sprung up to her feet, her eyes wide-ned in shock. “She was stabbed on purpose? By who? Who dares stab my daughter? That’s attempted murder, you know? Shouldn’t we report this to the police? Why are you keeping quiet about it?”

“It is not as easy as you think, Elodie. Reporting this case to the police is a very dumb thing to do.”

“How is that being dumb? That’s the best thing to do. What if the animal tries to hurt her again? What if they come back for her? Have you thought about that?”

“Why do you suddenly care about Diamond? This is so unlike you. Is it because of the threat of Mikhail?”

“Mikhail? Who is that?”

“Diamond’s boss.” He muttered.

“Ah, speaking of that disrespectful man,” She sat down back on the bed. “Do you know him from anywhere?”

Rhodes did not answer.

“Answer me, Rhodes. Do you?”

He placed his elbows on his knees and buried his fingers in his hair almost tugging at it.

“Yes.” He answered in a very quiet voice that she couldn’t hear him clearly.

“What did you say?”

“Yes.” He repeated.

“Really? Who is he? How did you know someone like him? Because judging by his appearance and aura, he doesn’t look like one who lives a good life. With the tattoos on his body and his dark piercing eyes. I don’t even know how Diamond got involved with a man like that. Wait, was he the one who stabbed Diamond? Is that why you don’t want to involve the police?” She raised a questioning brow.

“Mikhail has nothing to do with the stab. However, the person did it because of him. I will explain everything better when I am in the right of mind but listen, do not judge anyone based on their appearance. Because trust me, Mikhail is far more better than I am.”

He went to lie down on the bed, pulling the thick duvet over his body.

Elodie stared after him, her brows knitted.

“Rhodes, you said you had explain everything to me later. Why are you prolonging this? How awful were you in your past that you can’t tell me about it now?” She asked softly.

Rhodes closed his eyes, his breathing becoming shabby.

“Goodnight, honey.” He said in a raspy voice, leaving her questions hanging in the air.

NEXT DAY

«DIEGO’S HOUSE»

Layla excitedly opened her eyes, stretching her body with a smile on her face.

But the smile faded when she noticed the spot where her husband had fallen asleep last night, empty.

She abruptly sat up and whipped her head around in search of him but he was no one to be seen.

She got out of bed and barged inside the bathroom, it was also empty.

“Diego?” She called out, tears pricking at her eyes.

Was it all a dream?

No, it can’t be.

She descended the stairs and stormed into the kitchen where she found Daria making breakfast.

“Where is Diego? Where is my husband?” She asked immediately, pan-ting.

“Good morning, Ma’am_”

“There is nothing good about the morning. Just tell me where Diego is?” She snapped.

“I saw him leaving early this morning. He asked me not to disturb you and that you needed rest.” She answered.

“Did he say where he was going?”

“No, ma. He didn’t. He also asked me to make you a cup of mint tea.”

“Mint tea?”

“Yes, ma.”

“Is that what you are making?” Layla asked, looking at the countertop.

“I haven’t started yet. But now that you are already awake, I will make the tea.”

“Hmm.” She hummed and left the kitchen.

She was relieved and at the same time sad.

She felt relieved in the sense that it wasn’t a dream that he came over and slept on the bed with her. And she felt sad because he left without bidding her goodbye.

Will he ever return to her again?

She went back upstairs to get ready for the day.

«IN THE WARD»

The room was empty aside from Diamond in the ward.

Ayden and Zara left early this morning to take their bath, changed their clothes, and get food. They haven’t returned yet.

Diamond gro-aned inwardly, opening her eyes.

“Good morning, dear.” A nurse chirped, startling Diamond in the process. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“It’s alright. Who are you?”

“I am the nurse in charge of you. I work with Dr. Sean, to be precise.”

“Oh.”

”Where is Dr. Sean?”

“He is yet to resume for the day. How do you feel?”

“Great.”

“I can see that and I’m glad.”

Diamond pressed the bu-tton beside the bed and the upper part of the bed came up, putting her in a sitting position.

“Can I ask a question?”

“Of course. Ask right away, dear.” The nurse smiled.

“When will I be discharged?”

“Isn’t it too early to ask that question? You just regained consciousness.”

“But I feel amazing and strong.”

“You still need to be monito-red, dear.”

“Are you trying to say…?”

“You won’t be getting discharged yet.” The nurse said.

Diamond’s face dropped and she started whining.

The nurse chuckled. “You look so adorable. Your husband specifically told us to keep a close eye on you. He was so worried. Can I tell you something?” The nurse lowered her voice as if there were not the only ones in the room. “You died but your husband performed CPR on you until you came back to life. It was so emotional and epic.”

“My…my husband? I… I died? What?” Diamond was extremely lost with everything the nurse had just splattered.

“Your daughter cried all day. Let me tell you, dear, you have an amazing husband and daughter. Thank you for coming back to them because I wonder how they will love without you in their lives.”

‘Is she sick? Am I in a psychiatric hospital? What the fuc-k is this lady saying?’ Diamond said in her mind, giving the nurse a confused stare.

“You will be fine, okay?” The nurse said and left the ward.

“Husband? Daughter? I died? What?”

She was still pondering over what the nurse said when the door opened and a man entered with a bouquet.

“Miss Chase,” He bowed his head slightly.

She frowned at him. “Who are you?”

“I am one of the guards looking after your ward.”

“I didn’t know guards are looking after my ward. Who asked you to do that?”

“The boss.”

“What boss?”

“Mr. Ca-ssano.”

“Mr, Ca-ssano? Wait, he asked you to look after my ward. Did you say, ‘you are one of the guards looking after my ward’?” The guard nodded his head. “How many guards are looking after my ward then?”

“Three and that includes me.”

“What?”

“Anyway, some delivery guy brou-ght these flowers for you.” He handed her the bouquet.

“Who did he say it is from?” She studied the flowers, closely.

“He said it was anonymous.”

“Oh.”

“I can leave, right?”

“What? Yeah. Of course.”

The guard bowed again and just as he was about to open the door, someone beat him to it from outside.

Evelyn and Aurora walked in.

“Nanny!” The little girl screamed and ran towards Diamond. “Do you remember me now? It’s me, Aurora.”

The guard left the ward, closing the door behind him.

“Hey, kid.” Diamond let out a small smile.

Aurora’s eyes wide-ned. “You…you remember me, right? You remember me.” She started jumping up and down, grinning widely.

‘I would have told her that it was only a prank when I said I forgot about them but I think it is better she doesn’t know.’ Diamond thought.

Evelyn stepped forward, dropping a bag on the table beside the hospital bed.

“You remember everything now?” The woman asked.

“Yes, Evelyn. I’m sorry for worrying you all.”

“Oh, please. You don’t have to apologize, okay? I’m so glad you are alright now. We missed you so much.”

“I missed everyone too.” She looked at the closed door as if searching for somebody.

Evelyn noticed.

“Are you waiting for someone?”

“What? No. I… Did you two come alone?”

“Uhm, yes. Should someone have come with us? Who were you expecting?”

“Bo…Paige.” She coughed lightly. “What of Paige?”

“She stayed back at home. But she will be visiting soon.” Evelyn’s eyes landed on the bouquet. “Who got this for you?”

Diamond shrugged. “I don’t know. A delivery guy brou-ght it in. He said the person who sent it is anonymous.”

“Anonymous? Hmm. Strange. Do you want to keep it or throw it away?”

Diamond thought about it for a while.

“I will keep it.” She decided.

“Okay. Let me put it in a vase.” Evelyn exchanged the flowers with an old-looking flower in a vase beside the bed, on the table. “It’s beautiful.”

“Yeah.” Diamond smiled and nodded.

“Let me keep this away.” Evelyn threw the old flowers into a waste bin.

“Nanny, how do you feel now?”

“Good. I’m as strong as a wonder woman.” She said jokingly.

Aurora laughed. “No, you are not.”

“Of course, I am. You wanna see how strong I am?”

“Yes.”

“Alright.” Diamond tries to stand up but it kinda hurt so she stayed back. “Uhm, I will show you later.”

“Why can’t you show me now?”

“I am reconnecting my strength abilities. You are going to be blown away by my strength when I’m done reconnecting my abilities.”

They both started laughing.

Diamond hissed as she felt a slight pain at the spot she was stabbed.

“Are you okay?” Aurora asked worriedly.

“Of course. I will be. You don’t have to worry.”

Evelyn returned to them. “I brou-ght you breakfast.”

«TINY APARTMENT»

Lottie grabbed a beer from a mini fridge and went to sit down at the desk.

She pulled the cover open and took a large gulp, humming to the tune ‘psycho killer’ by talking heads.

She turned up the lid of the laptop seated on the desk. She had a mischievous smirk on her face as she typed something on the laptop and then clic-ked on a link, leaning back into the chair, taking another gulp of beer when a live video of a ward came into view and the nanny’s smiling face full the screen of the laptop.
