I knelt at his side, putting my hands on his arm. He sighed, bringing his other hand to land on mine, then pu-lling it up, ma-king me stand. He pu-ll-ed me around to be standing in front of him and his eyes slowly moved up my ruined dress then to my face. His face crumpled, and tears began to pour from his eyes as he stood up, pu-lling me to wra-p my arms around him. “Just be here with me.” He whispered into my hair, and I held him ti-ghter.

“I’m so sorry, Calvin.” I whispered back as I felt his b©dy shake.
He straightened his back, holding me at arm’s reach in front of him, looking ha-rd at my face. “I know…I know he was an enormous as-s, but…”

“But he was your dad.” I finished for him. “I un-derstand.” I told him, tilting my head trying to un-derstand his new expression.
He su-cked hisl-ips into his mouth and closed his eyes, sighing. “I’ll be fine.” He said. “I just never expected this to happen. I thought he’d always be around to be a pain in my as-s, and that I’d always be a prince, a title with no power. But now…” He paused shaking his head. “I don’t know if I know how to run a kingdom.”

I reached out for his hands, holding them ti-ghtly. “Calvin, I know you’ll be a great king!” I insisted. “Don’t doubt yourself.”
He nodded his head. “I don’t want to be like him.” He said after a minute.

“Then don’t be.”

He smiled finally, his dimples ma-king a brief appearance. “I’m glad you’re ok, Rachel.” He said. “I hated not being able to come back to you.”

I shrugged. “You were a little busy.” I pointed out.

He backed up to sit back down in the blue chair, then pu-ll-ed me over to sit across his l@p. “It was…it was madness.” He admitted. “I’ve never seen so much…” His voice dropped off.

“Hundreds of years ago back before my father took the kingdom from an insane king, riots and attacks were normal, but there hasn’t been any uprising since my father had been king. The people used to love him.” He explained. “He was ambitious and tough. He did whatever it took to make his people happy and to earn their respect, but along the way, he changed, he bec@m£ complacent with being royal, and he let the people down.”

I nodded, studying his handsome profile while he stared blankly at his hand on t©p of my leg. I felt so bad for him and I couldn’t imagine what things must be going throu-gh his mind now, but I nee-ded to know more about what had happened. “Calvin, what happened? Where did the attack come from, and what happened to…your dad?”

He sighed, his eyes looking far away, like he was seeing it all over again. “It c@m£ so fast, Rachel.” He said lowly. “They mobilized after my father made some stupid announcement, but they had to have alre-ady had the plan, because it worked too perfectly. They were staying above ground somewhere on the main land, but they weren’t just from Ireland. They were from all over, all the most influential vampire providences. They were so well organized.” He awed. “They c@m£ in, and they just started attacking, anyone and everyone. Ripping people limb from limb, then dropping matches as they went. A large group of them fought their way into the guard’s barracks and they killed dozens, then took the highest ranked ones, forcing them to give them the code to get to my father’s suite.” He said. “They held him here, tied him up with chains covered in juniper.”

“How did they t©uçh it?” I asked surprised.

“They had humans helping them.” He said quic-kly. “They tied him up, and all the time I’m trying to break throu-gh to get to him, they tortured him. They finally let me in, and they offered me a choice.” He paused. “I didn’t give them the answer they wanted, so they killed him in front of me.” I held his face in my hands.

“What choice?” I asked curiously.

He shook his head. “It’s not important.” He said. “I told them I wouldn’t do it.”

“Why can’t you tell me?”

He looked firmly into my eyes. “I…I just can’t, Rachel.” He said. “Anyway, they fled from the suite, leaving me to watch my father’s b©dy burn. Most of them got away, but the guards caught some of them. They want me to be king, and that’s why they didn’t kill me even after I told them I wouldn’t help them.” He looked ha-rd at my face. “Rachel, I have to kill them.” He said firmly. “All of them.” He sighed, leaning his forehead against mine. “They’ll keep going after people I love, whatever they have to do to get what they want, so I have to leave.”

I leaned away, my eyes wi-de and heart pounding. “Leave?” I repeated. “What are you talking about?”

“I have to.” He said sadly. “I have to protect you, and everyone else, so I’m going to hunt them down.” He sounded determined, and angry. “We got information from one of the men we captured that the ones heading up this rebellion are in Germany. I have to go there and I will fight until every single person who would threaten what I love, is dead. They wanted a ruthless king, and now they’re getting one.”

“But, Calvin.” I tried to protest, but he k!$$£d me, then stood us up.
“I know you don’t want me to, but it’s what I’ve got to do. They killed my father, my people, and they’ll kill you if they get a chance, and I won’t let that happen.” He said. “I’m leaving tomorrow night.” He told me and my throat felt dry and my mind started going crazy. “Rachel,” He said, getting my attention back by holding my face ti-ghtly, his eyes probbing mine. “I want to marry you first.” He said. “plea-se say you will.” He smiled. “Marry me tonight, plea-se, baby?”
My heart st©pped and my mouth wouldn’t work. “I…um, well…” I stuttered.

Calvin laughed at me, k!ss!ngme gently. “Marry me, Rachel.” He whispered against myl-ips. “I don’t want to leave without knowing you’re mine.”

“I’ve always been yours.” I whispered without even thinking about it. “Let’s get hitched.”

Calvin chuckled. “You mean it?” He asked excitedly. “You’ll marry me tonight?” He asked again.
I laughed too at his pla-yful expression. “Yes, I will marry you tonight.”

“This is going to be the one good thing to ever happen to me.” He whispered, wra-pping me in his arms. “You’re an angel, and I don’t deserve you, but I want you, and I can’t believe I’m actually going to get to have you.”

“You’re being cheesy again.” I giggled.

“You make me be cheesy.” He said. “You make me think of things I’d never thought of before, and feel things I never imagined feeling. I want to spoil you for the rest of eternity, Rachel.” He professed.

“I love you.” I said happily.

He k!$$£d me again. “I love you too, so much more than you could ever imagine.” He smiled at me and then looked behind me. “Make the arrangements.” He said over my shoulder and I turned around to see Master Pedro standing in the doorway, teary eyed.

“She’ll be the most beautiful bride there ever was.” He said.
I laughed at him. “Great, you’re being cheesy now too?” I asked jokingly.

“You’re right.” Calvin agreed with Pedro and both men laughed.
Pedro crossed his arms across his che-st. “Well, if memory serves me right, I don’t think the two of you are supposed to see each other the day of your wedding or its bad luck.” He said.
Calvin pu-ll-ed me closer. “That’s true.” He said with his head rested on t©p of mine. “Good thing the wedding will be at 4am, so that’s technically tomorrow.” He pointed out. “But just in case, you two better go ahead and go.” He said re-leasing me. “I’ve got a lot to clean up around here, and I’ve got to pick the men I want to take with me to Germany.”

The mention of Germany stressed me out all over again. I didn’t want to think about the hostile rebels there that could possibly kill my husband. The second I thought the word ‘husband’, my mind went off on a totally different downward spiral of worry.
I said my goodbyes to Calvin, and I tried not to focus on the fact that as I left him I could still see the hint of sadness in his eyes. I went with Pedro down to level 1, and we walked throu-gh the grand ballroom, which looked eerie empty of the hundreds of people and noise, to the back of the room that I thought would be a kitchen of some sort, but instead it was a very posh looking dressing room. “It’s the royal waiting suite.” Pedro explained.
“This is where they used to wait until they were announced to grand ba-lls, or weddings.”

I looked around, taking in the plush off white walls, and the gold silk dR@p£d back and forth across the ceiling. The carpet beneath my feet was shockingly white and thick, and little teardrop shaped lights were mounted to the walls around the room. The back wall was a mirror, and to the left of it was a rack with 4 white dresses. Along the other side of the room there was a vanity, much bigger than the one from my room, and to my right was an open door that went into a bathroom.

“Wow.” I said, then I got distracted by my reflection in the mirror. “Oh, wow, I look rou-gh.” I laughed, taking in my destroyed dress, ratty hair, and makeup smeared face.

Pedro shrugged. “I wasn’t going to say anything, since you’re about to be my queen, but yes, you do look rather rou-gh.” He laughed.

I went over to one of the comfy looking white chairs and plopped down. My head just could not wra-p around me being a queen in a few hours. I’ve never wanted any of this. It should be Tessa or Greer, but as much as I don’t want the title, I want Calvin. Thinking of the other girls made my heart tug. “What happens to the girls now?” I asked Pedro and he c@m£ to sit in the chair beside mine.

“I’ve alre-ady told them about the wedding.” He said. “I also informed them of the king’s decision.” He smiled at me. “The other girls can chose between staying here in Castrum de Petra as free women, with a protective guard on them, or they can take a position at one of the feeder schools.” He told me. “They seemed very happy with the options, and they wish you luck tonight.”

I was so proud of Calvin for doing the right thing by them. “Won’t they be at the wedding?” I asked.

Pedro shook his head. “Not unless you want them to be.” He said. “Calvin thought you’d prefer a small ceremony so only specifically invited people, and a handful of officials will be pres£nt.”

“Will you be there?” I asked finally starting to feel anxious.
He sma-cked my knee with the back of his hand. “Who do you think is marrying the two of you?” He chuckled. “I’ll be performing the ceremony.”

“Good.” I sighed. “I want the girls to be there.” I decided. “Only if they want to come though.” I added, thinking of Lexton. If I’m right about her feelings for Calvin, she probably won’t want to be f0rç£d to watch us get married.
Pedro nodded. “Who else?”

I thought for a moment. “Maria, and the girls who do my makeup and stuff.”

“Carly and Jessica will be so honored.” He smiled. “I was wondering if I could bring a d@t£?” He asked shyly.

I grinned brightly. “Of course.” I said. “What’s her name?”
He bit hisl-ip. “Well, his name is Patrick, and he’s wanted to meet you for some time.” He explained. “He’s a cook.” He smiled.
I laughed. “I can’t wait to meet him, Pedro.”

The door opened and Maria, Carly, and Jessica walked in, waiving to me. “So,” Pedro said seriously. “Do you want me to invite the other two girls? Regina and Frankie?”

“Would they even be allowed to come?” I asked.

Pedro rolled his eyes. “He didn’t tell you, did he?” I gave him a confused look. “Calvin got them back from the men they were sold to on the same night you asked him to.” He smiled. “They both chose to go back to their feeder schools and work there.”
Calvin never ceased to amaze me. “If they want to come, then yes, they are welcomed to.” I told him still smiling.

So many things were running around in my head while I showered and then let the girls begin working on my hair and makeup. I couldn’t even begin to wra-p my mind around the fact that I’d be getting married in a couple of hours. I was beyond anxious, so much so that I could ha-rd ly control the shaking of my f!ngerswhile Jessica painted my f!nger nails a soft blue. Every now and then the thought of Calvin leaving would creep in, but I’d quic-kly shove down any emotions about that. I didn’t want tonight to be about that. I want tonight to be about us. Just when I’d thought I had my emotions un-der control, I thought about after the wedding.

My wedding night.

I shook my head to rid myself of those thoughts, knowing full well I would obsess over it if I allowed myself to dwell on it too long. “Be still.” Jessica scolded me with a smile as she pu-ll-ed another section of my hair up.

When they were finished with me, Pedro took my hand and brou-ght me to the dresses. “Let your heart chose the right one.” He said.

I looked over to the mirror, amazed at how beautiful they’d managed to make me look, even in this plain black robe. My eyes were dramatic and my bright redl-ipstick made myl-ips look even more full than usual. My hair was up in a gorgeous high bun that had br@ids wra-pped around it, giving the delicate silver tiara on my head an even more royal look to it.
