đPROLOGUEđ
âgreeeeeeeeâŠ.â My alarm wailed and I jÂŁrked up immediately, I couldnât wait for it to repeat its singing as I pushed the bu-tton off. It was 7:00am. I stretched on my be-d before finally getting up, I walked lazily to the bathroom.
I brushed and showered like a princess before walking out 20 minutes later. I walked to my wardrobe and sli-pped on a blue jean bu-m short, a white crop t©p coupled with a blue jean open jacket, and a white snicker.
I was re-ady, but then I remembered, Iâm growing up so I nee-d a little makeup, I mean, a 14-year-old girl gotta look good. I walked to my makeup table, I picked up the pinkl-ipstick, damped it on myl-ips a little, dropped it, then picked my mascara, I was applying the mascara when I noticed my mumâs figure in the driveway throu-gh the window, she was talking to someone but I couldnât see the person from where she was standing, so I walked to the window and fli-pped the curtain open, then I saw the woman she was talking to, the womanâs appearance
shocked me a little, she was on a blue garment that rolled all the way down to her toe and beyond, her hair was complete white dre-adlocks, her skin, well I can only see her face which was so smooth and bronze in colour, she crossed her hands on her che-st that each hand was lost in her armpit, her h!pwere a little ti-ght like that of a man, her che-st wasâŠ. Broad with no brÂŁ@st to proof that she was a woman⊠wait a second, I looked closely at her and it dawned on me, that wasnât a woman, it was an
extremely beautiful man in his early thirties. Wow! Who the hell is he, and why does he look like lucifer himself?
I looked at my mum again, she was begging, almost kneeling down begging the extremely handsome man whose face was void of emotion.
My mum talked, shouted and begged although I couldnât make out her words but I could hear her voice.
Why was she begging him? I wanted to find out, I nee-ded to find out, I was about to step out of the window when I saw the manâs hands drop from his armpits and a weird looking big book c@mÂŁ into view in his left hand, he handed the book to my mum who stared at him with pleading expression, but the man stretched the book further to my mum who finally collected it after seeing that it was pointless begging Mr weird.
That does it! I nee-d to find out whatâs going on, I nee-d to know who he is.
I ran down stairs, I ran to the door and made to open it but my mum beat me to it as she stepped into the house inspecting the book with a sad look on her face which was also coated with a little sign of fear, she finally looked up and jÂŁrked back.
âoh my… M you scared meâ she exclaimed; guess she wasnât expecting to see me.
âmum who was that, what does he want and whatâs with the weird looking bookâ I asked.
âM, baby calm down, one question at a timeâ
âfine, who was that dudeâ
âan old friendâ she answered as she walked into the sitting room and I followed.
âhe looks so weird, why were you begging himâ
âcause I offended him some years agoâ she answered and walked to the kitchen, I still followed, she opened the fridge and brou-ght out 3 eggs, she picked a bowl and broke all the eggs into it.
âwell, what did you do to himâ I asked as I rinsed the frying pan and handed it over to her, she lighted the g@s cooker and placed the pan on it.
âitâs a long story babyâ she replied.
âcanât you tell meâ I asked impatiently, this is getting annoying, a weird guy showed up at my house, gave my mum a weird looking book ignoring her plea-s and just walk off like that, speaking of the book..
âwhatâs with the book he gave youâ I asked as she poured the egg into the oil heated pan. Few minutes later she spoke up.
âabout the book, baby can you do me a favourâ she asked as she dished out the completely fried eggs.
I stared at her suspecting that she doesnât want to tell me about it and I canât push further cause itâs a waste of time, thatâs my mum, if she doesnât wanna tell you.. she wonât tell you.
âwhat is itâ I asked as I scooped some egg into my softly baked bre-ad and pushed it into my mouth.
My mum walked to me with the book in her hands, she stretched it towards me and I stared at her with my bre-ad filled mouth.
âkeep this book and a box for meâ she said with a smile, I looked closely at the book for the first time, it was dark blue in colour, if you didnât look closely you would think itâs black in colour, with weird but beautiful designs all over it, but what struck me was the dragon shaped rope wra-pped around it with its mouth opened very wi-de on the front page, closing it from an intruder, more like a diary, but the dragonâs mouth has a shape of a diamond, weird! I turned back to my mum.
âI donât get it, why should I hold itâ I asked.
âM, I canât explain right nowâ
âyou also talked about a box, what box?â I asked as I finished up my bre-ad and egg.
She walked out of the kitchen, heading upstairs probably to her room, few minutes later she c@mÂŁ back with a small box that weirdly look exactly like the book, the same size, the same colour, the same design and the same dragon lock.
What the heck is all this.
âmum, where did you get these things fromâ I asked getting frustrated. She sat on the chair opposite me on the breakfast table.
âM, keep this for mummy and until I ask for it and do not open the box, plsâ she pleaded, I wanted to protest further but I decided against it, Iâll just accept it and then check what the heck was inside it later.
âfineâ I collected the box and the book from her and ran to my room, I opened my wardrobe and sli-pped it in, I closed it back and ran down stairs immediately I heard a honk, thatâs the school bus.
âbye mumâ I shouted as I ran out the door.
*******
School was boring as usual, just the normal things, go to clas-s and donât be late, get bullied by girls who think they are better than everyone else, girls like Kira Davidson, I hate her so much as much as she hates me, she doesnât think Iâm worthy to be in Beverly Hills Junior High just because Iâm not as beautiful as she is, am I the only ugly girl in that school, although Bethany my best friend keeps telling me that Kira was only behaving like that towards me cause she is jealous of my beauty, but I think she said that cause Iâm her best friend, everyone knows that Kira is the most beautiful girl in B.H.J.H. she even rejected Bethany and I when we applied to be p@rt of the cheerleaders, so we had to try gymnastics and we got in, thanks to the fact that Kira was not in the gymnastics.
Bethany and I bec@mÂŁ the best in gymnastics which brou-ght more hatred from Kira, what did I ever do to that girl.
So, yea, thatâs the kind of stuff you face every day in high school.
When I heard the bell ring signifying the end of the dayâs lesson, I ran to my locker and picked my biology text book for my as-signment.
âM!â I heard Bethanyâs voice, I turned to her direction.
âhey besâ I called, she hvgged me.
âwalking as usual?â she asked, we always walk home even though we can afford a taxi, but we prefer to walk so that we can be able to gossip.
âyou know itâ I said to her and we giggled. I closed my locker and we walked out of the school heading home.
âyou donât look yourself besâ she complained. How did she know, I tried really ha-rd to conceal my worry for what happened this morning.
âIâm good girlâ I replied trying not to bug her with my problem. She swift me around to face her.
âlook at this face, does it look like it belongs to a stupid person, or someone who doesnât know youâ she asked pointing at her face and looking very serious, and I had to laugh.
âalright, you got me, its just my mum and a weird guy who brou-ght a weird book to her…â I explained everything to her.
âbut I was planning to open the box once I get to my roomâ I added.
âI donât know bes, if she said donât open the box, then I donât think you shouldâ she said with a worried look as we walk on.
âI know but I have to know what Iâm dealing with, what if thereâs a gun inside, or drugs, or rotten snakeâŠâ
âeewwwâŠâ Bethany made a disgusted face and I laughed.
âor worstâ she added.
âwhat can be worst than a rotten snakeâ I asked amused.
âspidersâ she said with fear written all over her face, we stared at each other before bur-sting into a hearty laughter. We talked about school and other stuff until we got to her gate.
âgirl Iâm coming to your house so we can do our as-signment togetherâ Bethany yelled as she closed her gate after running in.
âk besâ I screamed back as I ran toward my house which was a little far from Bethanyâs.
I got home and found a note on the wooden centre table as usual; my mum is always at work each time I come back from school, sheâs a psychologist and she works in a hospital, I have no idea what she is in the hospital. I picked up the note and re-ad it.
âgone to work baby, I made spaghetti and tomato sauce for youâ. Oh, thank God, cause Iâm so hungry.
I went to my room, freshened up and went down to the kitchen, I microwaved the food and downed the whole thing in few minutes. Bethany will be here any minute, so I went upstairs to get re-ady for our study or better still, as-signment.
I got to my room and brou-ght out my biology text book and as-signment book, I scratched my back for the fifth time, and realised the sweat shi-t I was wearing is very itchy, I stood up from the be-d and walked to the wardrobe to change, I opened the wardrobe and my eyes fell on the box and the book. Bethany said it wonât be a good idea to check it out butâŠ.
I picked up the weird things and walked back to my be-d forgetting that I nee-ded to change. I wanted to obey my mum and respect my bestieâs opinion but the urge to know what was inside that box was so strong.
I picked the book first and tried opening it but it was stuck, I tried to untie the dragon like rope with a diamond mouth but it sparked and shocked me a little, what the hell? I tried using my pencil but instead the pencil broke into two, what! I dropped the book and picked up the box, it has the same lock, I knew it will be fruitless to try opening it, but still I tried. I pu-ll-ed at it with my whole strength and it made a crack sound signifying that it has opened, I looked at it, my heart beating so fast, I was scared of lifting the lid but curious at the same time and my curiosity won, I lifted the lid and it made a little loud roaring sound that scared the hell out of me, it sounded as if I was lifting a rusted coffin in an empty hall, but still it opened. Finally, I was going to know what was inside. I looked inside and it was dark, I couldnât see anything which was weird cause itâs broad day light, so I picked my phone and switched on the flash light, I peered it inside the box and still I couldnât see anything, it was like a dark room with no light. This was just a waste of time, I switched off my flashlight and wanted to close the box but then I noticed a light movement inside it, I looked in and saw a very dark smoke coming out of the box, what! How is this possible, I was alre-ady really scared, I tried to close the box but it wouldnât close, what have I done.
The smoke filled my room and began to choke me, I coughed and ran around the room, trying to find anything that can be able to close the box but I couldnât feel anything, it was as if I was falling into a bottomless pit, I screamed but I wasnât hearing my voice, I tried to stand but I was held down by a f0rç£ I canât really tell, I felt my whole world crumbling, my whole being disappearing, my soul leaving my b©dy, tears fell from my eyes like rain, is this the end of me, I have always dreamed of growing up, going to college, getting married, have kids, grandkids before I die on my be-d peacefully at a very old age, but it seems like none of them is happening, itâs over, Iâm done.
But then just as it appeared, the smoke began to fade, little by little until it was completely gone, for few minutes everywhere was so blurry, I blinked three times before I regained my consciousness, for a minute I thought I was dead, but when I saw my Bethany looking down at me, I realised I was still alive, she pu-ll-ed me up.
âgirl what the hellâ she asked baffled.
âthat box is evil, I nee-d to tell my mum to take it outâ I cried weakly.
âwell I noticed the weird black smoke coming from it, so I covered it upâ she said.
âyou did, I tried closing it but it didnât bulgeâ I complained.
âobviously you are not as strong as I am, common letâs do the as-signment, my mum gave me 6:00 pm curfew and itâs 5:00 alre-adyâ she said as she walked to my be-d, I was still stunned about what just happened to me as I walked slowly towards my be-d but I missed a step and fell greatly on the ground hurting my ankle badly.
And that was how it all started.
Iâve been JINXED (cursed).
