EPISODE 23
SONIA’S POV
So, around 6:48pm Joshua came back from work, I welcomed him and went back to the kitchen to continue what I was doing.
He went upstairs to freshen up, after some time I equally finished with what I was doing and went upstairs to take a bath.
We met downstairs some few minutes later, he was looking all freshen and cute, while I too had changed into something else after bathing.
SONIA
dinner is served sir.
JOSHUA
I’m sorry what is it that you prepared?
SONIA
white rice and stew
JOSHUA
I’m sorry but I won’t be able to eat that rice for now, I might eat it later but for now… just help me to microwave the pepper soup I brou-ght home, give some to the securities outside, one to the gate man, give me one and take one for yourself…. that’s if you care for some.
SONIA
so all my effort in cooking the meal is just gonna be in vain?
(I said almost crying)
He was shocked, normally I talk with all boldness and confident without the fear of no one but it was that time of the month again and I usually get either too excited over little things or cry over little things.
Anytime my period is around the corner, you would think I’m a baby, I cry alot and I’m happy even over silly things… but badly him refusing to eat my food made me sad and I was seriously going to cry.
JOSHUA
Are you about to cry right now?
(he asked looking at my face)
SONIA
No
but it was too late because the silly tears already dropped from my eyes… I quickly try to wipe it but Joshua already saw it.
He got up from his chair and came to stand in front of me, I looked away, but his eyes kept following my face to any any side it turn to.
JOSHUA
But this is tears I see in your….
I started to sob loudly, it was really embarra-ssing but I couldn’t stop, I was crying like a baby.
He was confused, he didn’t know if he should hold me or wipe my tears.
JOSHUA
okay okay fine, let’s go to the dinning and eat… Jesus Christ, you are such a baby.
He said going to the dinning room, I immediately stopped crying and followed him happily.
I went to the kitchen and microwave the pepper soup for him, I brou-ght some for him and took some and some food to the securities outside.
They all praised me and asked me to thank the boss for that for always taking good care of them.
I promised to deliver their message, I turn and went back inside.
I joined him in the dinning room, but not with my food though
SONIA
the securities outside ask me to thank you for always looking after them and taking good care if them.
JOSHUA
oh…..okay
he dragged like he was looking for what to say….
SONIA
should I bring more rice?
JOSHUA
bring the whole pot, I will eat it and eat the pot too
SONIA
Are you angry at me?
(I said wanting to cry again)
JOSHUA
of course not, I only said you should bring more food…. but come to think of it, why are you this way today….i have never seen you like this, you are always bold when talking to people but today you are different.
SONIA
because I’m sad, I’m very sad
(I started to cry again)
JOSHUA
You are sad? do you wish to talk about it?
SONIA
I want to talk about it but there’s nothing there for me to say, my period is coming it’s giving me mood swings and I’m heating it.
JOSHUA
(He smiled at me, he really did smile at me)
Oh u see…..sorry about that, so this is when we get to see the soft Sonia?
SONIA
what do you mean? I’m always soft and easy going
JOSHUA
Maybe to others but not to me, you are always looking at me like you can beat me… right from the first day we met.
SONIA
(I smiled)
I’m always kind to everyone, and mind you, I can get excited over little things too.
JOSHUA
really? over little things too? what of big stuffs?
SONIA
I don’t know, I might be excited too.
JOSHUA
why are you not eating?
SONIA
I don’t feel like eating now
JOSHUA
has your period started already?
SONIA
Not yet, but it might start before morning.
I don’t know why he had so much questions to ask about my period and why I was even answering at ease was what was shocking to me too.
Finally dinner was over, so I cleared the dishes and washed them…. he was in the living room watching TV.
SONIA
I’m going to sleep now sir.
JOSHUA
before you do that, come here, I have something for you.
I moved closer to him and he carried something from his side and handed it over to me.
SONIA
what is this?
JOSHUA
open it and you will know.
Before I could even open it, he got up and started heading upstairs…. I opened the bag and the first thing that visited my eyes were phone package, my heart started to beat fas-ter, my eyes began to get teary…. I quickly open the pack, it was a new brand phone.
He was almost entering his room, I ran like a crazy lady, without thinking twice I hug-ged him from behind.
It was awkward I know but I didn’t care at that time, I was happy, I was surprised, I was emotional, it was the gift I was ever receiving from anyone….. and it melted my heart.
After some time he pulled me from his body, and I had to stand in front of him.
JOSHUA
Does this make you happy too?
SONIA
So much, that I can’t even explain how I feel … it’s the first ever gift I ever received.
JOSHUA
oh, I see….stop crying please, it makes you look like a baby….. there’s a Sim in the phone already, so you can start using it and make sure to go to the bank and ask them to change your number.
SONIA
sure, sure I will do that…. thank you for the gift
(I said wiping my face)
JOSHUA
you are welcome…. I’m tired, I’m going to sleep….. goodnight
He opened his door, entered and locked it….I took my phone inside my room and started to learn how to operate it.
JOSHUA’S POV
I entered my room and jumped on my bed with my heart beating fast, what the hell is wrong with this my maid?
who cries when they are expecting their period? did you guys see the way she hug-ged me without my permission, who does that? it was awkward I know but I kept my cool, I didn’t want her to start crying again, I hate making people to cry and that’s why my life is like this.
I carried my phone and chatted for a while before I went to bed because I had early morning appointment.

SONIA’S POV
The next morning I woke up but couldn’t leave the bed, my period already started and my stomach was hurting badly…. i guess Joshua noticed I haven’t some any house chores so he came to my door to knock.
SONIA
please come inside
(I said weakly)
He opened the door and entered
JOSHUA
morning Sonia
SONIA
good morning sir….I’m sorry I couldn’t come out to make you breakfast, my stomach hurts.
JOSHUA
your period started already?
(he asked and I nodded)
sorry about that…. so what do you use for pain reliver?
SONIA
I just sleep, wake up, cry and wait for the day the period stops
JOSHUA
that is crazy, you don’t take any drugs?
SONIA
I heard taking drugs is dangerous
JOSHUA
No, it’s not dangerous…what about hot water? you should take a little warm water…. I’m sure it would ease the pain.
SONIA
you think so?
JOSHUA
because I’m not a lady? trust me, it would ease your pain.
SONIA
I can’t even leave the bed
(I said making a sad face)
JOSHUA
oh, don’t worry I will go get it for you… you can for breakfast too?
SONIA
no, I think I will just skip that…. I’m sorry for stressing you.
JOSHUA
how were you able to cope last month?
SONIA
jack was the one who cooked for the securities…. his such an un-derstanding man.
JOSHUA
Oh I see, so let me get you the warm water…
He got up and left, few minutes later he came back with a hot cu-p of tea with plenty of cream on it, and a cu-p of warm water… he put some pain reliver drugs beside the tray too.
JOSHUA
you should take this, it would fasten it to calm down.
SONIA
thank you sir…. you are not going to work?
JOSHUA
I’m going to work, I came downstairs to have breakfast befire dressing for work… I didn’t see any sign of you so I came here to check up on you.
He explained like he was writing an essay in an examination hall….
SONIA
I’m sorry I couldn’t make breakfast, but I’m sure I will be able to cook up something before you come back from work.
JOSHUA
don’t worry, I will get the house something to eat…. just get some rest.
Is he not a darling? his such a very kind and un-derstanding man.
SONIA
that remains me sir, please can I have Jack’s number? I will like to call him with my new number.
JOSHUA
why not wait for him to come here, then you ask him to give you his number?
SONIA
no, that won’t be a sur…..
I suddenly felt the urge to vomit so I took the duvet off my body and ran into the bathroom vomiting.
JOSHUA
Are you okay in there?
(he kept asking)
I washed my mouth and came out after I finished vomiting, my whole body was weak…. I didn’t eat anything last night and I’m still vomiting on an empty stomach.
JOSHUA
Is this how you suffer every month? to me I don’t think this is normal, you should go see a doctor.
SONIA
can you help me with the drugs please?
He took the drugs and opened it, he gave me two from it and handed me the warm water….. I swallowed the drugs and gave him back the water.
SONIA
thank you sir
JOSHUA
I’m already late for a meeting, I will call jack to come take you to the hospital.
SONIA
I don’t need to go to the hospital, I will get better once I sleep.
JOSHUA
are you sure?
SONIA
yes sir….
JOSHUA
where is your phone
SONIA
it’s over there…. why are you looking for it.
JOSHUA
you wanted Jack’s number right?
SONIA
oh yeah, I need his number…. can you give it to me?
he got up and carried my phone, he dialled Jack’s number on it and gave it to me
JOSHUA
you can save it with whatever name you want…. I’m off to work.
He got up and walked to the door, I called his name and he turn to look at me
SONIA
thank you
(he nods and left)
The rest of my morning was uneventful, jack didn’t pick my calls even though I called more than ten times… I was so desperate to let him know I got a new phone, I wanted to surprise him with my voice on the phone but he didn’t answer it.
Around 1pm he came over to the house, he came into my room directly
JACK
I heard you are sick again
(he dragged the “again”)
SONIA
leave me alone ooh
(I said turning my back)
JACK
Hello, can you hear me? I’m talking to you Mr mood swings.
SONIA
(I turn smiling)
what are you trying to say?
JACK
I know is not Sonia that is talking, it’s the mood inside of you.
SONIA
I have a surprise for you
(I said smiling)
JACK
really? tell me or show me
I brou-ght out my phone from un-der my pillow, and showed it to him and he laughed wholeheartedly.
JACK
you got a phone? how did that happen?
SONIA
(I laughed)
JJ got it for me
JACK
awwn, is that not what you girls say when you are blus-hing over something romantic?
SONIA
stop being dramatic joor… tell me, shey the phone is fine?
JACK
yes, the phone is fine… but wait ooh, why did JJ buy phone for you? is there something you are not telling me?
SONIA
how come you know I am on my period?
(I suddenly asked)
JACK
JJ told me… he even said I should take you to the hospital
SONIA
why are you just coming self?
JACK
sorry, joy’s sister called me over, so I had to go
SONIA
(I laughed)
see the way you are explaining yourself like a husband that was caught cheating
JACK
The matter shock me too, why I come the explain myself like say you be my babe.
SONIA
please can you help me to cook something ? the securities have not eaten anything today.
JACK
why are you now making that face?
SONIA
you know I’m cute when I make that face
(I said touching my cheeks )
JACK
if my girlfriend catch you, you go collect woto woto
SONIA
see your head…. don’t stress me, you know I’m sick.
JACK
but your mouth has power abi?
(He said and we both laughed)
It’s just been a month since I started working here, I can’t explain how it happened but jack and I became very close, very close that you will think we have known each other for years.
I waited for him to finish cooking,he prepare noodles and eggs for the securities, he came back few minutes later with some noodles
JACK
I brou-ght you some food
SONIA
I’m not eating…. thanks for cooking for them.
JACK
it’s nothing… so tell me, are you on WhatsApp?
SONIA
do I know how to download it? beside have you saved my number?
JACK
I will save it right now… give me your phone let me teach you how to use it.
I happily gave him my phone, I couldn’t wait to join Whatsapp too.
