Standing in front of the mirror, I observed the
white dress hu-gging my curves. It was a
simple A-line dress that flowed past my
ankles, sweeping accross the floor. My hair
was styled in a br@ided bun, with few locks
framing my face. The makeup artist had done
a wonderful job in giving me a light glow
instead of making my face look like a cake.
Perfect. Just how I had imagined my look on
my wedding day. But there was just one issue;
the hollowness in my eyes.
Moving away from the mirror, I picked up my
phone and dialed a certain number. It rang for
a few seconds and then was picked up by
someone I knew, or I thought I knew.
“Dad,” I said in as distant voice as possible.
“Are you there yet?”
“Oh sweetheart, I totally forgot to tell you. We
can’t be there because Sam had a performance
today. The plan changed last minute.” he said,
as if his excuse somehow made logic.
“It’s my wedding day, Dad.” I whispered, still
not complaining.
“I know Scarlet. I wish I could be there.” he
replied but his words didn’t sound sincere.
“It’s okay. Bye,” I said and cut the call, as few
tears trailed down my cheeks.
After Mom’s death, Dad married a woman who
had a daughter few years younger than me.
Although she was his step-daughter, Samantha
soon became far more important to him than
me and that’s when I decided to move out of
his town.
“Scarlet, everybody is waiting— What
happened?” Liam hurried towards me when he
found me crying.
“Nothing.” I ru-bbed my cheeks and faked a
smile.
“It doesn’t look like nothing. Did Evan say
something?” he asked, kneeling in front of me.
He was wearing a black tux, looking handsome
as ever. If it was a big wedding, he would have
definitely found some admirers during the
function.
“No,” I said. “Liam? Can I demand something
from you?”
“Yes, I am all yours, babe.” he chuckled and
wiped my tears with his handkerchief.
“Can you walk me down the aisle?” I asked and
his expression changed immediately.
“He isn’t coming?” he asked and I shook my
head in no, tears once again erupting from my
eyes. “Yes, I will. Happily.” he said and sat
beside me to pull me into a hu-g.
“What will I do without you?” I asked, smiling
at his conforting presence.
“You won’t have to find out.” he chuckled as he
patted my back.
……..
After my college friends Brida and Tara walked
down the aisle one by one as my bridemaids, I
wrapped my hand around Liam’s arm and
together, we walked down the aisle. It was a
small ceremony, only few friends and family
members were invited. And from my side,
there were just Liam and two college friends of
mine.
On the other end of the aisle, my husband-to-
be was standing with a bored expression on
his face, his eyes fixated on the watch on his
wrist. Only when I reached him did he raise his
head to look at me and for a small moment,
his eyes wide-ned. Subtly, he looked at me
from head to toe but his expression remained
unreadable.
The pastor officiated the wedding and
everybody focused their attention on him,
except Evan who looked lost in some thoughts.
Although he did his best in masking everything,
I saw a hint of sadness in his eyes. I know it
must not be easy for him to marry someone
while being in love with someone else’s
memory. I never fell in love, yet this marriage
had made me emotionally unstable. It must be
more difficult for him.
My eyes left his face and moved to Cara
standing behind him. The smile on her face
was worth it. Her eyes were sparkling and her
smile was wide enough to actually split her
face. She was wearing a pink fluffy frock that
she had chosen herself.
Neither of us had prepared any vows so we
skipped that pa-rt and moved forwards. At the
end, the moment came which I was dreading
from the start, when the officiant told Evan that
he could kizz the bride.
Evan’s eyes lowered to my li-ps and I l-icked
them unknowingly. A tornado started running
inside my stomach as I felt him lean close to
me. Not able to look at his face, I closed my
eyes and after a brief moment, I felt his li-ps
on mine for a microsecond but it was enough
to make my heart skip a beat, even though he
looked completely unaffected.
Oh God! Can I back out now?
………..
After the ceremony, the driver took us to his
house while Evan’s mother took Cara with her,
saying she would drop her next morning. I
didn’t feel good leaving her but Cara insisted
that she wanted to spend the night at her
grandma’s house so I couldn’t exactly do
anything.
Once we entered the house, George and Kelly
came rushing to us to welcome us in. Now I
knew, they both were husband and wife and
had been Parker’s employees for as long as
they remember.
My dress trailed behind as I p@$$ed them a
smile and followed Evan to his room, his
silence creeping me out. My heart was
pounding inside my che-st because I didn’t
know what to expect from him on our
supposed wedding night.
This was the first time I had entered his room
and the churning of my stomach increa-sed.
The room smelled like him, masculine and
sharp, the scent creating goosebumps on my
skin.
“Make yourself comfortable.” he said and went
into the bathroom. He had said we would
share a room for the first few days because
there will be many guests coming to
congratulate us. All my luggage was already
there, so were my clothes and pyjamas.
Once Evan went to the bathroon, I looked
around myself. It was a fairly big room; a king-
sized bed in the middle with a study desk at
one side of the bed and a walk-in closet and
dresser at the other.
One thing that caught my attention was the
photo frame placed on the nightstand. I didn’t
have to guess who the female in the photo
was, because her uncanny resemblance with
Cara made it clear. Same dark blonde hair,
same colored eyes, same innocence and
beauty. She was easily one of the prettiest
girls I have watched in real life. It must have
been quite easy for Evan to fall for her if he
was a man of looks and beauty.
I was still @$$essing that picture when the
door of the bathroom opened and I turned
around immediately, as if I had been caught
doing something bad. When I finally saw him
walking out of the door, my breath hitched.
He was definitely handsome, too handsome for
someone with such a dry behavior. And this
was accentuated by the half-sleeved T-shirt he
was wearing, that clung to his muscular torso
and highlighted his toned che-st and abs. I was
used to seeing him in three piece suits so this
was certainly new for me.
This was going to be a long night, I told
myself as our eyes locked for a brief moment.

Scarlet

After changing into my navy blue satin
pyjamas, I stared at my reflection in the mirror.
The bathroom was more luxurious than my
entire apa-rtment and it was freaking me out. I
didn’t know I would be sharing a room with
him and this piece of news was messing with
my sanity.
Letting out a de-ep breath, I made my way out
of the bathroom. He was sitting on the bed,
scrolling his mobile. Realising my presence, he
lifted his head and gave me a very brief
glance.
Ignoring him, I made my way to the dressing
table and combed my hair that were still
tangled because of all the bobby pins. Letting
my hair loose, I contemplated whether to join
the bed or not.
I was relieved when he himself left the bed
and walked towards his desk to sit there.
Using that chance, I hopped on the bed and
covered my legs with the blanket, keeping my
mobile beside me.
“Gabe, why didn’t you send me the file yet?” he
called someone on the phone and asked in a
tired voice.
The person said something, to which he
Gr0-ned, “What made you think that I might not
nee-d it tonight? Send it to me as soon as
possible.” he said and cut the call.
My eyes diverted to the clock and it was close
to midnight. I was quite tired because of the
wedding but he didn’t look like he was going
to sleep anytime soon. He opened his laptop,
pulled out some files and then started doing
some work.
Silently, I observed his hair that were ruffled in
a se-xy way and the veins in his arms that were
protruding out of the bulging muscles. Girls
like me don’t get married to men like him—
Hot, intimidating and rich. He was like a hero
in a R0m-nce novel and I was just an average
girl, too simple, too normal. Then why did my
destiny land me in a marriage with him?
I was busy thinking that when my eyelids
started feeling heavy. Soon, I succu-mbed to
sleep, forgetting about this workaholic man
who was supposed to be my husband.
………
When I woke up next morning, I found myself
in an unfamiliar room. It took me a moment to
remember my marriage and for some time, it
felt like a long dream.
But when my gaze landed on the tall figure
collap-sed on the couch at one side of the
room, I realised that it wasn’t a dream.
Stretching my arms, I rose to sitting position
and observed Evan. The couch was too small
for him but he had somehow adjusted to it.
His left arm was dangling down the couch
while his legs were protruding out of it. Half of
the blanket was falling on the floor while the
other half was covering his long legs.
Walking out of bed, I walked towards him and
pulled the blanket over him. He had a frown on
his face which was probably permanent,
because he always looked like all the weight
of the world was on his broad shoulder.
Shaking my head, I went into the bathroom, did
my morning routine and changed into fresh
clothes. I chose a light blue floral maxi dress
that reached my ankles and styled my hair in a
br@id.
He was still sleeping so I made my way
outside. The delicious aroma from the kitchen
pulled me to it. I stood in the doorframe shyly
as I watched Kelly make breakfast.
“Good morning Ma’am,” she said when she
noticed me.
“Oh, please call me Scarlet.” I said and
stepped inside.
“Sure, Scarlet. What would you like to eat?” she
asked respectfully. I was not used to someone
doing something for me so it felt weird.
“What are you making?” I asked, staring at the
bowl.
“Spinach Omelet. Evan sir likes to eat Omelet
and toast in the breakfast.” she said as she
mixed the cilantro in the eggs.
“If you don’t mind, can I?” I asked and she
looked slightly unsure.
“You don’t have to worry. I’ll make the
breakfast.” she resisted and I pouted in return.
“Please,” I requested. Nodding, she backed
away and let me make the breakfast.
Once she engrossed herself in making fresh
orange juice, I made the spinach Omelet and
gave it my distinct touch. Then I toasted the
bread, made some sausages and prepared two
plates of breakfast, leaving some for Kelly and
George.
“Hurry up, Kelly. Sir is on the dining table,”
George said and Kelly rushed outside with both
plates balanced in her hands, as if Evan would
kill her if she was even a minute late.
I followed her outside to the dining table
where Evan was sitting fully dressed in a three
piece grey suit. I don’t know how he got ready
in a very short time. When he felt my
presence, he stared at me and I felt self
conscious all of sudden.
Once Kelly served the breakfast, I sat beside
him and took few sips of the juice. “Good
morning,” I heard his voice and whispered the
same to him.
“Kelly,” he said after taking a bite and I gripped
the table in apprehension. “The Omelet tastes
better today. Good job.” he said and began
taking another bite.
Kelly was about to say something when I gave
her a look, motioning her to stay silent and go
with the flow. She in return p@$$ed me a brief
smile that caused me to smile as well.
“Scarlet.” I heard Cara’s voice as she came
rushing towards me from the door. Once she
reached me, she enveloped me in a hu-g which
I responded eagerly.
“Who dropped you?” Evan asked in his not-so-
excited voice.
“Grandma.” she replied as I settled her on my
lap and p@$$ed her the juice. “She was going
to supermarket.”
“Oh. Did you eat anything?” I asked her.
“Yes. Grandma bought me bagel and
milkshake.” she smiled back and refused to
have the juice.
“Great,” I smiled and ran my fingers throu-gh
her long, smooth hair.
She then hopped out of my lap and seated
herself beside me. She watched me carefully
as I ate my omelet. “Scarlet, can I ask you
something?” Her nervous voice rose.
“Sure.” I replied.
“Can I call you Mommy now?” she said and
both Evan and I coughed simultaneously. I
should have expected it but the thought didn’t
cross my mind that she would want to call me
Mom.
“Um…” I stammered, not knowing what to say.
I turned to look at Evan who looked seriously
disturbed. I knew he was thinking about his
deceased wife and it must be stressing him
that I was taking his place.
To relieve him of this tension, I told Cara,
“Baby, you already have a mommy, Eliza
mommy.” I said and she pouted in return. “But
maybe you can call me something else. Like…
Um… Mama?”
“Mama.” she repeated. “It sounds nice.”
“Yes, it does. I used to call my mom Mama.” I
told her and she smiled as a response.
“Okay Mama,” she muttered excitedly.
I shifted my gaze to Evan who was gaping at
me with a serious look on his face, as if he
hadn’t expected me to handle it like that. He
never said that but it was obvious that for
some reason, he thought of me as a bitc-h who
wants to take the position of Eliza in this
house and in his life. So my saying this
probably came as a shock to him.
“Thanks,” he whispered so lowly that I ba-rely
heard him.
“My plea-sure,” I p@$$ed him a smile which he
didn’t reciprocate.
