Evan

After styling my hair with the gel, I completed
my look with a grey tie. Tonight was our
reception. As the wedding was very simple, we
had to organise a big reception to invite
everyone who couldn’t attend the ceremony.
I was spraying some perfume on me when the
door to my room knocked. “Sir, everybody is
waiting downstairs.” George came to inform
me.
“We will be there soon.” I told him and after he
left the room, I knocked on the door joining
the room to closet. “Are you done, Scarlet?” I
asked.
A gr-unt came from inside, which was followed
by her exhausted voice. “Yes. The dress… It’s
just… Um… I’ll be out in a minute.”
Rolling my eyes, I walked towards my desk
and picked up a finance report. While I was
busy @$$essing it, the sound of door opening
reached my ears.
I lifted my head to give her a brief look but on
seeing her, an unexpected gasp escaped my
mouth. I didn’t realise that I was gaping at her,
with my mouth slightly pa-rted and my gaze
froze on her.
She looked radiating in the rose gold dress,
her presence illuminating the entire room. The
dress hu-gged her slender figure and flowed
down her ankle. The de-ep ne-ckline gave a hint
of her clea-vage and structured collar bones.
Kelly had styled her hair in loose brown curls,
that made them look bouncy and glossy. Her
simple yet shimmery makeup enhanced her
features and she ended up look stunning.
The blus-h on her face told me that I had been
staring at her for too long. Tearing my eyes off
her, I walked out of the room and asked her to
accompany me.
“We should act like a couple in love. If anyone
become suspicious of this marriage just being
a compromise, it won’t be good for my
reputation.” I said and moved closer to her.
When we finally reached the entrance of the
hall, I put my hand on the small of her wa-ist
and her breath hitched at this, her che-st
heaving up and down.
Everyone pair of eyes turned towards us, some
with admiration, some with adoration, some
with a hint of bitterness.
Beside me, Scarlet was standing stiff. Probably
being the centre of attention was something
she wasn’t used to. So I leaned towards her
and whispered, “Don’t freak out. Just imagine
these people with rainbow hair.” Hearing this,
she turned to me with furrowed eyebrows and I
shrugged. That was how I conquered my fear
of being in a crowd.
“Aww. You look amazing, Scarlet.” Mom came
towards us and moved forwards to hu-g her.
“Yes Scarlet. I mean, Mama. You look so
pwe-tty.” Cara also joined the session and
praised Scarlet. I wonder why this girl had my
family wrapped around her little finger. Maybe
it had something to do with her bright smile,
or maybe the way she smelled, as if you have
stepped into a lawn full of flowers, but with a
baking oven in the middle. Weird .
“Come on, I have to introduce you to some
people.” I said and took her hand in mine,
tugging her along me.
I led her to some of my business pa-rtners.
Scarlet easily mingled with everyone because
of her friendly and sweet nature but I didn’t
ignore how some men stared at her from head
to toe. And I also didn’t ignore how it made
my blood boil.
“Won’t you introduce her to me?” I heard a
familiar voice. It was Helena, swaying towards
us in a de-ep red mermaid gown. Her arms
were linked with one of her eye-candies.
Helena used to date a lot of models and she
changed them like her bedsheets, if she ever
changed the bedsheets herself. Every pa-rty,
she was with a new pretty face but that didn’t
stop her from showing her interest in me.
“Scarlet, meet Helena. My business pa-rtner.” I
told Scarlet who extended her hand for a
shake.
Instead of shaking her hand, Helena moved
forwards to envelop her in a hu-g. “Just a
business pa-rtner?” she said and I felt my face
pale. I didn’t want her to feed any nonsense to
Scarlet. “Don’t listen to the business pa-rtner
bullshit. I’m his friend, Scarlet.” she said,
causing me to roll my eyes again.
“Let’s go,” I pulled Scarlet away and Helena
gave me a sour look at this.
“It’s nice to meet you, Helena.” Scarlet said
loudly while I almost dragged her to a corner.
“Ignore her. She is a little irritating.” I told her
and took a gl@$$ of wine from a waiter.
“An old girlfriend?” she asked, looking quite
curious.
I gave her a look and she silenced
immediately. “No, just a friend who always
wanted us to be more.”
“Well, can you blame her?” she whispered but I
heard it anyway. Comprehending what she
meant, I turned my attention to her and she
turned red in return.
“I mean… Well… Um…” She looked so cute
as she became a stuttering mess.
To relieve her of the anxiety, I changed the
topic of our conversation and motioned
towards a tall blonde dancing with an old man
in the middle of a floor. “See that woman, she
is the sole heir of Platinum Jewelers. Her
dress alone worth a million.”
“I didn’t know you like to gossip.” she grinned
beside me and earned another frown from me.
“Aren’t you the purest soul?” I said
sarcastically and she scrunched her small
bu-tton nose in anger.
“I don’t gossip.” she defended herself.
“Of course you don’t.” I taunted and she glared
at me. “You are the most innocent person ever
graced the face of Earth. Right?” I kept my
face straight so nobody would doubt we were
having a little argument.
“Am I hearing right? Was it a lame attempt of
cracking a joke, Mr. Workaholic?” she retorted
with a fake smile.
“What did you say?” I narrowed my eyes at her
on hearing the nickname. It wasn’t the first
time I was hearing someone call me that word.
But well, I was proud of being a ha-rd worker
and no amount of mocking will change my
morale.
“Stop bickering and go to the dance floor
before everybody notices something is off
between the newly married couple.” My
mother’s annoyed voice suddenly came from
behind us and we both jumped up in surprise.
Scowling as subtly as I can, I extended my
hand for Scarlet. She took it in her small ones
and we both silently trudged towards the
centre of the hall. The lights here were dim
and there were many couples dancing around
us.
Scarlet stood in front of me nervously. I was
the one who initiated the contact and moved
towards her. Keeping my eyes on her de-ep,
brown orbs, I put one hand on her wa-ist and
laced my fingers with her dainty ones with the
other hand.
“Just copy my movements.” I said as I pulled
her closer. Up close, she looked even more
beautiful. Her eyes that just appeared brown
from a distance were slightly hazel from close.
I moved her with me in the rhythm of the
song, feeling the warmth of her skin throu-gh
the thin material of the dress. She felt so
small in my arms and the urge to keep holding
her filled my mind. What the hell was wrong
with me?

Scarlet

His hands on my wa-ist almost burnt me with
his warm presence. He was towering over me
despite the heels and I had to angle my ne-ck
to look at him. He looked so handsome in the
grey suit that fitted him perfectly and his oh-
so-awesome hair. The urge to run my fingers
throu-ghhis hair overpowered me to check the
texture but I controlled it.
For a brief moment, his eyes crawled below
my ne-ck and I felt self-conscious all of
sudden. The ne-ckline was too de-ep that it
failed in hiding my che-st properly. I wasn’t
used to wearing such revealing clothes so it
was normal to feel conscious. And the way his
jaw clenched when he first saw me in it didn’t
help the tingles in my stomach either.
“What are you thinking?” he asked as he pulled
me closer in a step in the dance.
“Nothing,” I lied. I couldn’t tell him that I was
being affected by him, can I? Besides, it must
be pretty normal for him to have girls fluttering
around him all the time. It was sad to admit
but I wasn’t resistant to those charms.
“Ahan,” he said and turned me around so now,
my back was lying against his che-st. I felt him
lean down after which he whispered in my
ears, “Everybody is looking towards us. Just
keep smiling.” With that, he let out a small,
playful yet fake chuckle, as if he had muttered
something scandalous in my ears.
“Okay,” I nodded, smiling as wide as I can. He
rested his head on mine due to our height
difference and we both moved slowly for few
minutes after which he finally decided to pa-rt
ways and enable me to breathe.
He then left to talk to someone while I made
my way to Cara, eating cu-pcakes from the
food table. “Cara, baby. Didn’t I tell you to eat
only one sweet thing in a day?” I asked her
and she looked like she had been caught
murdering someone.
“I… I just ate one.” she stammered, obviously
lying.
“Really?” I raised my eyebrows mischievously.
She pouted, too embarr@$$ed to admit she had
lied. But at the end, she finally sighed, “I ate
three.”
“Oh. Well, it’s okay. But now, you have to
brush three times as long.” I told her and she
nodded immediately.
“Good girl.” I said and pinched her cheeks, at
which she giggled. “Are you sleepy yet?”
“A little,” she said and just then, a cute yawn
made its way to her face.
“Come on, let’s tuck you in the bed.”
I took Cara to her bedroom and helped her
change into her pyjamas. While she tried to
sleep, I kept thinking about Evan. There was
something about his touch that made me feel
giddy and I was not ready for such s-ns¶tions.
Maybe it was just attra-ction because he was a
very handsome person. Maybe it will die with
time and I will be more comfortable in being
in a same room as him.
I was lost in these thoughts when Carla’s soft
snores started filling the room. kizzing her on
the forehead, I made my way back to the
pa-rty. I looked everywhere for Evan and then I
finally found him talking to a woman. The
same woman he was talking about earlier; the
daughter of that jeweler or something. I don’t
know why but I felt my che-st constrict at the
sight of him talking so freely to her.
“If I were you, I won’t worry about a girl. Evan
isn’t like that,” I heard a voice. I turned my
head to the source of the voice and found
Evan’s friend Helena gracefully sipping a gl@$$
of wine. “The only woman standing in your way
to his heart is Eliza. Even after five years, she
still owns his heart.”
“No. It’s not like that. I was just watching out
of curiosity.” I tried to defend my action
without looking like a desperate person.
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. I have been there.”
she said as she watched that woman with a
bitter look in her eyes.
“If you don’t mind me asking, do you love
him?” I asked and the woman let out a small
chuckle in return.
“Love is a big word Scarlet. But yeah, I do
admire him a lot.” she admitted. When she
found me staring at her with an uncomfortable
face, she laughed it off. “Don’t worry, I am not
a jealous or obsessive villain. I un-derstand that
he is off-market now.”
Her words told me that she was a mature
woman who knew her boundaries. But did she
know this marriage was just for Cara?
“If you’re thinking if I know the truth of this
marriage, the answer is yes.” she said and my
mouth fell open at how she knew that. “But
well, we both know that if you share a room
with this adonis of a man, we are sooner or
later bound to fall for him.”
“It’s not true. I am here just for Cara.” I uttered
nervously.
“Maybe for now.” she chuckled and I gulped.
“I… Um… I nee-d to go.” I said and rushed out
of that woman’s sight as soon as possible.
She was too smart for me to handle.
……….
“What was Helena saying to you?” Evan asked
as soon as we entered the room. I went to the
dressing table and ran the brush throu-ghmy
hair. After that, I took off the jewelery one by
one.
“Nothing much.” I lied. “No offence, she is a
little…”
“Crazy,” he completed the sentence for me.
“No, I was going to say ‘too smart’ but—” I
turned around to complete the sentence and
lost the ability to speak for a minute.
Evan’s back was towards me and he was
taking off his shirt. After the shirt was off, only
a thin white tank top left behind, the rest of his
arms and back on display.
“What were you saying?” he asked, still turned
towards the wall. My eyes followed the
contours of his body and I felt dryness in my
throat.
“I… I don’t know.” I said breathlessly. I was
not used to seeing a man in such state,
specially not a tall, broad one.
He turned around in confusion and when he
found me staring at him in my flustered state,
a corner of his li-ps turned upwards.
God! Why do I always embarr@$$ myself in front
of him?
To save me from the misery, I rushed inside
the closet to change into my pyjamas. By the
time I walked back into the room, he had
already made his way to his study table.
Sitting on the bed, I hu-gged my knees and
stared at his working figure. It was late and he
had woken up quite early in the morning. His
sleeping habits worried me but I knew better to
keep my mouth shut. I reminded myself that I
was here to take care of Cara and not him but
I couldn’t for-ce myself to ignore his exhaustion
and health.
‘He is an adult. He can take care of himself. ‘ I
told myself.
‘Can he?’ A voice in my head fought back. My
eyes once again moved to him and I found him
m@$$aging his temples. p-ulling the blanket to
my head, I for-ced myself to sleep otherwise I
will definitely humiliate myself in front of him.
