???? Chapter Thirty-Nine ????

~A night visit~

????ACE????

“Who was that person?” He asked his mother for the tenth times that night but she wasn’t saying anything. She was just fiddling with her fingers, glancing down at the floor. “ANSWER ME!” He yelled at the top of his voice now, glaring ha-rd at her.

Naomi flinched a little, she was expecting the outburst from him.

She let out a sigh, taking a step back away from him. She was afraid of him hurting her but little does she know….

Ace ran his fingers throu-ghhis hair, dishevelling it in the process. He went towards the bar and took out a bottle of whiskey then returned back to her, still waiting for her to start explaining.

“It’s… it’s just a pa-sser-by… he…she…” She clears her throat. “They wanted directions, that’s all.”

“Oh, really? Directions?” He scoffed. “And what? You don’t know if the person is a She or he?” He questioned.

Naomi looks up at him, shrugging her shoulders. “I didn’t… i didn’t take the need to care?”

“If really this person was just a pa-sser-by who needed directions, why then did he or she ran as soon as I came up?” He asked.

“I…I… I don’t know, Ace. But you have to trust me. Because everything I’m doing right now, I’m doing it for yo_”

“DON’T!” He cuts her off immediately. “You do not care about anyone but yourself! And stop acting innocent!” He took a large gulp of the whiskey with a gro-an. “I ask again, who the fu-ckwas that person!”

She hesitate for a while, staring at him. “You… you don’t believe me, do you?”

“Why should I?”

“I’M YOUR MOTHER!” She said at the top of her voice.

“AND SO fu-ckING WHAT!?”

“What?”

“I hate you so much. I hate so fu-cking much. You know but you are only acting not to.” He said.

“What are you talking about?”

“Tell me what’s wrong with my memory! Tell me what you know that I don’t!”

Naomi didn’t say anything. She just gulped hard, lowering her gaze to the ground.

“You are not gonna tell me, right?”

“It’s for the best, Ace.” She whispered.

Ace scoffed, scratching his chin. “For the best you say. I hope to know what it is you are keeping from me, Naomi.” With that, he left the house.

“Ace, what are you doing here?” Paulo asked as soon as he opened the door to find Ace standing on his front porch.

“Can’t I come over again?” He asked rudely, brushing past Paulo and walking into the house. He took a large gulp of the whiskey that’s almost finished and let out a de-ep sigh.

“I told you to stop drinking, Ace.” Paulo said, shutting the door close and came to stand behind Ace.

Ace rolled his eyes. “I can’t.”

“Of course you can. You aren’t doing yourself any good, man. You are more like a drunkard and that’s very bad. You don’t eat or sleep well but yet can take five to ten bottles of alcohol. That’s very bad.”

“Three.”

“What?”

“You’ve said that word three times since I’ve got in here.”

“What word? Stop drinking?”

“It’s very bad.” Ace said, plopping down on the couch. “And mind you, I’m not drunk.”

“What happened?” Paulo walked towards the kitchen, minutes later he returned with a glas-sof water and handed it over to Ace while he collected the almost finished bottle.

Ace shrugged. “Where is Stephanie?” He looked around.

“She has gone back home. Her mother came visiting so she had to leave. But that didn’t answer my question… what happened, Ace? What did your mother do?”

Ace stayed quiet for a while before saying. “I saw her talking to someone when I got back home.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know. The person ran off as soon as I came up. And when I asked her who it was, she said it was a pa-sser-by who needed directions. She was very nervous and um, suspicious.” He said, sipping from the water.

“She was nervous and suspicious?”

“You heard me.”

“So who do you think the person is?” Paulo asked.

“Is that meant to be a question?”

“There is a question tag attached to it, isn’t there?”

“How do you expect me to know? This_” A knock came throu-ghthe door, interrupting Ace. “Who are you expecting at this time?”

“You are just coming to my house as well at this time. So?”

“What if it’s a killer or thief? or_”

“I should have thought about that before opening the door for you.” Paulo rolled this eyes, going to the door.

He looked throu-ghthe peephole and was very surprised to see the person. He unlocked the door and opened it, staring at the person with wide eyes.

“What are you doing here?” Paulo asked in a whisper.

“I’m here to have a word with you, detective Paulo.” Mr James said.

“Oh. Please come in.” He stepped aside for the man to be able to come in. Mr James walked in while Paulo shut the door close. “What can I offer you, sir?” He asked.

“I won’t be staying for too long.” He said, politely rejecting his kind offer. “But I can still seat.”

“Oh, please seat.”

“Thank you.” He sat down and look over at Ace. “How are you?”

Ace raised a questioning brow at him. “Do you know me?”

“Do I have to know you before I greet?”

“I guess?”

“You are very funny. I’m Mr Samuel James.” He introduced.

“Ace.”

“Ace? Like Ace Reyes?”

“Yup.”

Mr James turned to look at Paulo. “He is, Mr James.” Paulo admitted with a smile.

“Oh. I didn’t know he was here, actually.”

“You wouldn’t know.” Ace said throu-ghgritted teeth.

“So, why are you here, Mr James?” Paulo asked, concentrating at the matter at hand.

“I’m here concerning the investigation.”

“Wait, what investigation?” Ace asked, looking at Paulo.

“Your investigation.” He turned to Mr James. “What about it? I mean, I thought you said you can’t help but Mrs Smith can.”

“And did she?”

“She only gave me one more confusing puzzle.”

“About the witness being a girl?”

“Yes.”

“Wait, the witness is a girl not Naomi?” Ace cuts into the discussion.

“Yes Ace.” Paulo turned back to Mr James. “But that was all she said to me. She didn’t even tell me who the girl is or where the girl is right now.”

“She wouldn’t know that. Everything that happened that night is still a mystery to everyone. It’s a case I started but could not finish because of the threat note I started receiving, the warning from my boss and finally I got fired.” He said.

“Oh.”

“I was very glad when you said you want to pick up the case again. I mean, it’s time this murderer get caught and pay for their sins.” He sighed. “Here,” He handed Paulo a flash drive. “I had docu-mented everything concerning the case in there. Use it for the investigation.”

“Thank you, Mr James.” Paulo smiled, collecting the flag drive.

“You don’t have to thank me. I just want you to find that fu-cking psychopath and bring justice to Mr Reyes, Ace Reyes and the girl.” He stood up to his feet. “I should get going now.”

“It’s late. Can’t you spend the night here?” Paulo offered, standing up as well.

“I can’t. I don’t want my wife to get worried about my whereabout. And besides I can take care of myself.”

“Um, sir. Do you by chance, know who this girl is? Like her name?”

“That was the last puzzle I couldn’t find. And honestly, she’s our last hope. If there is anyone that needs to be protected then it should be her.”

“Yeah. I just need to find her.”

“What is going on?” Ace asked Paulo.

“I will tell you everything. Everything.” He a-ssured him.

“Good night then. And I hope I was of great help to you.”

“You were. I really appreciate. And yeah, good night too.”

Mr James patted Paulo on his shoulder, smiling. “I hope you achieve what I couldn’t. You have potentials, detective Paulo.” With that, he walked out of the house.

????BALLERINA????

Ballerina was preparing to go to bed when she heard a loud thump against her window.

She flinched a little, staring at the window.

Slowly she went closer to the window and peeped throu-ghit but found no one.

She slowly opened it and suddenly, a paper plane flew towards her. She caught it and stared down at it before looking around to see if she could find anyone but she saw no one.

She closed the window and walked closet to her bed, sitting down on it. She carefully opened the paper and saw only two words on it _knock, knock_

She stared at it in confusion… Suddenly, there was a loud ban-ging against the door, bringing Ballerina back to reality, back to the land of doom.

The battle is yet to be over.
