Writer’s POV

After everyone had finished eating, Madelyn stood up to begin clearing the table. Wealth followed suit, and they both began carrying dishes to the kitchen. As they worked side by side, washing and drying the dishes, Wealth noticed she had become distracted again, her mind wandering elsewhere.

“You okay?” Wealth asked, concerned by her distant demeanor. But she didn’t respond, her eyes glazed over, lost in thought.

“Hey, love,” He said, gently touching her arm. She blinked and looked at him, confused.

“Are you okay?” he asked again, and she nodded with a weak smile, but could clearly sense the energy behind her smile.

“You know you can always talk to me, right?” he said gently. She nodded, but remained silent for a moment. Then, a tear escaped her eye and rolled down her cheek.

“It’s just… I feel bad for Dylan and my mom. Even though my mom is getting out of prison tomorrow, Dylan won’t be. Because of his gang activity. It makes me so sad,” she said, fighting to keep her voice steady. She tried to raise her chin and blink away the tears, but they kept coming.

“It’s okay,” he said, setting the last dish aside. He took off his gloves and tossed them in the trash, then walked over to Madelyn and pulled her into a tight hug.

“I know he’s not a good person, but he’s still my brother,” she sobbed into his shoulder.

“It’s okay, love. You can let it all out,” he said, patting her back reassuringly.

After a few minutes, she finally pulled away from the embrace, and he gave her a reassuring smile, helping her wipe away the tears.

“The trial is tomorrow,” he said. “And I hope it will all be over soon. But there’s nothing we can do about Dylan.”

She nodded and mustered a small smile. “I know. And Levi will help us with everything. I really want you to be happy with your new identity,” she said, her voice still shaking a little.

“Cheer up, love,” he said, squeezing her hand gently. She nodded, and they walked back into the living room.

“Where’s Sophie?” Wealth asked, noticing that only Aurora was in the room.

“She’s on the phone with Henry,” Aurora replied, not looking up from the book she was reading.

“We’re going to go to bed now,” Wealth said. “You should do the same, Mom.”

“I will,” Aurora said with a sigh.

“Good night, Ma’am Aur…” Delyn started, but She cut her off.

“Mom,” she corrected, and she smiled.

“ Goodnight mom” she finally said with a smile

“Good night, Mom,” wealth said, leaning over to kiss her cheek. He and Delyn then headed off to their room, leaving Aurora alone in the living room.

“ I’m not saying it back!” They heard from Sophie’s room as they were about opening their door, followed by her giggles.

“ fine I love you too” they heard again and their eyes popped out

“ I love so much….

“What the heck?!” Wealth exclaimed, clearly upset by what he was hearing.

He started toward the door, but Delyn gently pulled him back. “She’s old enough,” she said in a soothing tone.

“Don’t say that,” he snapped, pulling away from her grasp. He marched over to Sophie’s door and knocked loudly, then flung it open without waiting for a response.

“What are you doing?” he yelled, anger lacing his voice. Sophie flinched, her phone falling out of her hand as she jumped back.

“I… I…” she stammered, her eyes wide with fear.

“I asked you a question! Who were you talking to and what did you just say?” he demanded, his voice shaking with rage.

“It… it was just Henry… we were just having a friendly chat,” she said, her voice trembling.

“Don’t lie to me!” he said, struggling to keep his anger in check.

“Big brother, I’m sorry,” she said, sinking to her knees.

“What are you sorry for?” he asked, his voice a mixture of anger and confusion.

“I… I’m dating now,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She closed her eyes, bracing herself for the inevitable blowup.

“Dating….you’re dating Sophie ?” He asked

“I’m really sorry!” she clapped her hands together, begging.

“Sophie,” he began, but Delyn cut him off.

“Calm down, please,” she said, her voice shaking. He turned to her, his eyes blazing with fury. She shrank back, suddenly afraid.

“What the heck?” she thought, blinking rapidly. “I’ve never seen him like this.”

“I’m really sorry,” Sophie sobbed, tears streaming down her face.

“This was it, huh?” he said. “You two have been dating and… ”

“No!” Sophie exclaimed. “We just started dating, and I really wanted to tell you, but I was scared.”

Aurora walked into the room, taking in the scene. “What’s going on?” she asked, but no one answered.

He glared at her, then brushed past them and out the door.

“What happened?” Aurora asked, looking at Delyn for answers.

“Here’s what happened,” Delyn said, taking a deep breath. “He overheard Sophie’s phone call.”

“I’ll go talk to him, so don’t worry,” she said, reaching out to help Sophie up.

“No!” Sophie exclaimed. “I can’t stand up until he says I can. He’ll just get even more angry.”

Delyn blinked, not sure what to say. “But you can’t just kneel here all night!” she protested, staring at her.

“What did he hear?” Aurora asked, her voice tense.

“Mom,” Sophie said, looking up at her with tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry, but the truth is, Henry and I started dating. We… ”

“I knew it!” Aurora exclaimed, a look of anger on her face.

“We just started!” Sophie said, panic rising in her voice. “I can break up with him!”

Aurora glared at her for a moment, then turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone with Delyn.

“It’s okay,” Delyn said, kneeling beside Sophie and hugging her.

“But why can’t I date, even though I’m nineteen and will be twenty soon?” Sophie sniffled, looking at her as if hoping for an answer.

“I know you’re an adult, but I think your brother really wants you to focus on your studies and become the best person you can be. You can see he didn’t even bother going to college just for your sake” She replied softly

“I know, but I just couldn’t help the way I felt,” Sophie said, her voice small.

“I totally understand,” Delyn replied. “You don’t have to break up with him. I’ll talk to your brother, and I’m sure everything will work out.”

“I won’t let it distract me from my studies. I promise. I’ll focus on school, please help me talk to him.”she begged

“I know you will,” Delyn said, smiling. “Now get up, okay?

“I’ll stay,” Sophie replied. “It would be disrespectful to stand up without permission.”

“All right,”she said with a smile. “I’ll be back before you know it, so you won’t have to kneel for too long.”

“Thank you,” Sophie said as she left the room.

“Hey,” Delyn said as she walked into the room and closed the door behind her. “Mind if I join you?”

Without waiting for a response, she walked over to the bed and sat down next to him Gently, she reached out to touch his hand, but seeing the look on his face, she hesitated.

“Do you want some time to calm down?” she asked, but he didn’t answer.

“I know you’re upset, but it’s not like she’s pregnant or anything,” she began, but he cut her off.

“ Can you just stop” he said and she swallowed hard

“Okay,” she said, getting to her feet. “I’ll leave you alone until you’re calmer. But first, could you please tell Sophie that she doesn’t have to kneel anymore?”

“I don’t care,” he said, his voice cold.

“Honey, you know this isn’t right,” she said gently. “I know you’re only trying to look out for her, but the truth is, she’s an adult and she can make her own decisions. There are plenty of teenagers in relationships, but she’s been very responsible and waited until now.

“I just want her to focus on her studies,” he said, his voice cracking. “I just wanted her to be a better person than I am. I wanted her to have a bright future.”

“That won’t stop her from being a great person,” Delyn said, her voice firm. She sat back down on the bed next to him. “We can give her good advice and then invite her boyfriend over for dinner. We can talk to them both.”

He sighed and looked at her. “You really think that would work?” he asked.

“ trust me” she smile.

“I don’t even know why I was so upset,” he said, letting out a heavy sigh.

“And I was scared you” she pouted. He glanced at her and she met his gaze.

“You should’ve seen the look on your face when I tried to stop you,” she said. “I’ve never seen you like that before.”

He chuckled. “I’m sorry,” he said, shaking his head.

“I’ll only accept your apology if you accept Sophie’s as well,” she said, smiling.

“Blackmailing?” he said with a smirk.

“Fine, then I don’t accept your apology,” she said, feigning indignation. “We’re supposed to be going to sleep, so we can wake up early tomorrow.”

“All right,” he said, standing up. “I’ll go check on her.”

She smiled as he left the room. She knew that a little brother-sister time would do them both some good. Lying down on the bed, she let her eyes drift closed.

After a while, he came back into the room and closed the door behind him.

Looking over at Delyn, he saw that she had fallen asleep, her legs still on the floor. A small smile played on his lips as he walked over to her.

“Love?” he said softly, kneeling down beside her.

“Hmm?” she murmured, opening her eyes and blinking up at him. “You’re back? How was it?”

“You fell asleep like this?” he asked, and she smiled sheepishly.

“I talked to her and It’s okay,” he said, arranging her legs so she was laying properly.

“That’s good,” she said, a smile playing on her lips.

“You should go back to sleep,” he said, tucking her in and giving her a kiss on the forehead. She snuggled into him, content and sleepy.

“Good night,” he whispered, closing his eyes and settling down beside her.
