{ ABIGAIL INOCENCIO: THE MURDERER }

“The killer is…”

Robert completed the sentence. “Dr. Abby.”
_______

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Jersey asked, standing beside Abigail.

“Yes.” She nodded.

“You know you can change your mind if you want, I will always support you.”

“I know but I’ve made up my mind, Jersey. I want to surrender.”

“Come here,” He pulled her into his arms for a warm embrace, stoking her hair softly. “I love you.”

He noticed her go stiff and that confused him.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

Abby pulled herself away from his arms and took a step back from him.

“What are you doing?” He asked her, worriedly.

She started shaking her head in disagreement, giving him a look of guilt and sadness.

“You can’t love me, Jersey.”

A deep frown appeared on his face and he pinched his brows together.

“What are you saying?”

“I am a monster!” She yelled. “You can’t possibly be in love with someone like me.”

“Why not? Because you killed people? I don’t care, Abby.”

“Well, I do.” She retorted. “I don’t want to taint your image or that of your family. Do you think they will even accept me to be with you? I almost ruin your hospital. We shouldn’t have even been together in the first place.”

“Abby…” He tried to touch her but she swatted his hand away. “Why are you doing this?”

She swallowed nothing, looking at him.

“Why are you pushing me away?” He asked further.

“What do you think will happen after I surrender to the cops?” She raised a questioning brow at him. “Answer me. What future do you plan for you and me?”

“I am not a saint either, Abigail.” He snapped. “I knew about what you were doing but kept quiet about it. I tampered with the CCTV footage. Why do you think the detectives didn’t see anything?”

“You shouldn’t have done all that for my sake! I am not worth it.” She growled. “Do you think all I did, I didn’t know of the repercussion? I was ready for the punishment whenever I get caught.”

“I am ready for the punishment as well. I don’t bloody care. I just want to be with you.”

She shook her head. “Let’s break up.”

Jersey’s face dropped instantly. “What?”

“Let’s break up, Jersey.” She repeated, giving him a stern look.

“Are you being serious right now?” He asked, searching her face with his eyes to see if she was joking but all he saw was…seriousness. She really wants to break up with him. “Why?”

“Didn’t you hear yourself? You want to throw your life away because of me. No, I won’t let you do that.”

“Abby_”

“Please go.”

“No, I’m not leaving you to face your friend alone. I’ve come too far to give up on you now, Abby.”

“I want you to give up on me. Just go.” She said, pleadingly.

“I can’t do that. I am not leaving you, Abby.” He said stubbornly.

In a flash, Abby drew out a gun from the back of her waistband and pointed it at him.

Jersey’s eyes widened. “Wha…what are you doing?”

“I want you to take Thelma with you and get out of here. I won’t let the cops know of your involvement.” She said.

“Do you think pointing a gun at me will make me leave you alone in a situation like this?” He ruffled his hair. “Do you know what I had to give up just to keep the truth about what you did from everyone? I gave up my conscience, I gave up my reasoning, I gave up my peace of mind! I chose you over my mental health and that of my family. I could lose my job, wealth, or even my freedom for choosing you, Abby. And stupidly, I don’t regret the decisions I took because I love you so much. It’s crazy, I know. But do you even know how long I’ve been concealing my feelings for you? Abby, there is no happy ending for us and I’ve accepted that fate. As long as we are together, I’m fine with whatever the world has to offer.”

Abby was lost for words to say until she heard the sound of car engines from downstairs. She glanced down and saw a cop car, which obviously must be Emma but surprisingly, Emma came out of the car with two other people that Abby recognized to be Robert and Ginny.

“Oh, shit. She isn’t alone. They know about my atrocities.” She turned to Jersey. “Take Thelma and go. I don’t need any of you here.”

“I am not going.”

“Don’t tempt me, Jersey. I will shoot you if you don’t f**king leave.” She threatened.

“Abby_” She shot at the bucket not far from where he was standing. “What?” Jersey could not believe she would do that. It was so close.

“I am a murderer. Don’t think I won’t shoot.”

“I don’t want to lose you…” He pleaded.

“You’ve already lost me. Now go!”

••••

Abby was pacing back and forth on the rooftop, biting her lower lip as she awaited Emma and her colleagues to come up here.

“This is distracting,” A male voice said and that made Abby groan with a hard glare on her face. “Are you scared?”

“Shut up, Frederick.” She snapped, sending a quick message to Emma.

ABBY:I’M AT THE ROOFTOP.

“Why are you surrendering?” Frederick asked, raising a questioning brow at his stepdaughter that had him locked up for so many years.

“Because I want to end this shit. I am tired.”

“Are you stupid? Do you know how proud I’ve been of what you’ve become? You are like the mini version of me. My creation.”

“I am different from you, Frederick.” She growled.

“Are you?” He smirked. “You killed your patients and acted like a damn saint, Abby. You are a monster just like me.”

“I saved them.” She corrected.

“How?” A voice asked from behind, grabbing their attention. “How did you save those innocent people that you killed?”

Abby faced them. “They were in pain…” She mumbled under her breath.

“You are a doctor,” Emma pointed out. “Doctors save lives, not kill them.”

“Exactly what I did. I saved their lives.”

“Doesn’t that sound stupid to you? You saved them? How then? Answer me. How did you save them?!” Emma yelled, tears rolling down her face.

“They were in pain,” Abby repeated in a soft voice. “I couldn’t just ignore them.”

“They were in pain because they were sick! Weak! And needed treatment! You are a doctor, you should know this.”

Abby shook her head in disagreement. “There are some people that cannot be treated. The five patients I saved and Tara all had one thing in common…”

“They were weak and they reminded you of your childhood self who couldn’t fight for herself against her monstrous step-father.” Emma stated.

“No. That is where you get it all wrong.” Abby paused. “If that was the case, I would have killed every patient in the hospital.”

“What do they have in common?” Emma asked.

“They were scared of dying from their illness.” She replied. “My mother died in the hands of this monster!” She pointed at Frederick who was sitting on the floor behind her. “He killed her and his unborn child. I know what it feels like to be afraid of dying from the one thing you fear the most in the world.” She said. “I’ve been there before. Each night he would torture me till I can’t feel myself anymore, f**k me till I start bleeding and lose consciousness. He mentally, emotionally, and physically abused me. My mother died in front of me and I couldn’t cry…I was left in the bosom of a monstrous stepfather. And guess what I feared most…” She hesitated. “I was afraid of dying in his hands, just like my mother.”

“It is no excuse!”

“I know.”

“You know, after watching the video on Minty’s phone…I have so many questions I want to ask you but I just want an answer to this very question first…why?”

“I already answered that question. I killed them because they were scared of dying from their sickness” She answered.

“How do you feel whenever they die?” Ginny asked.

“Glad.” She replied.

“You knew how much I wanted to catch this criminal, you saw how desperate I was…You even offered to help. I don’t understand. This doesn’t make any sense at all. Are you really the killer? Is the real killer forcing you to take on the blame? Talk to me, Abby. Tell me the truth.” Emma cried.

Abby hesitated, swallowing nothing. “I offered to help because I wanted to monitor your movement. I needed to know when you are getting close to the truth so I can maneuver my way out before you can catch me.”

“This doesn’t still make sense,” She hesitated. “I can remember clearly that you went on a date with Jersey that night,” Emma pointed out.

“I did. He was my alibi. However, I stopped by the hospital first.”

“You fainted when you heard the news of Tara’s death.” Emma added.

“I didn’t faint because of the news I heard. I was already feeling dizzy beforehand. Tara waved the flowers in front of me as a means to defend herself and I mistakenly inhaled the poison but not enough to kill me. It is actually the reason why I was unconscious for four days but thanks to Jersey who helped me.”

“What? He didn’t tell me anything about the poison.”

“Doctor-patient confidentiality.” That was her simple answer.

“Two years ago, why did you act clueless about the deaths of your patients?” Robert asked.

“That way I wouldn’t be a suspect. You can’t be suspected of something you don’t know, don’t you agree with me?”

All of Abby’s answers were simple and logical. Still, Emma doesn’t want to believe that her best friend was actually the killer.

“How did you know that Minty saw you that night?” Emma asked.

“Sammy told me.”

“Sammy? Wait, he is an accomplice?”

“No. I don’t work with anyone.” She sighed. “I saw him in one of my patient’s wards. He seemed scared about something so I asked him what the problem was and he…told me.”

“Do you feel any remorse?” Ginny asked.

“For Tara and my other patients, I don’t. But for Minty, I do. She is the reason why I decided to surrender. I broke my rule and now, I feel like a murderer.”

“But for Tara and your other patients, what do you feel like?”

“A savior.”

Emma was in disbelief. “Wow. So all of that determination to catch the killer and put them behind bars, those crazy promises you made to Tara at her funeral was all an act. Who are you? How could I have been living with a psychopath all these years?”

“Emma, I’ve told you this before that there are certain things you don’t know about me. I told you not to trust me.”

“And I was stupid not to take your word for it!”

“Did you tell the witness that caught you bagging up Minty’s body to tell the cops that she saw a man?” Robert asked.

Abby frowned. “No. I didn’t even bag up Minty’s body.”

“What?” Robert and Emma exchanged glances.

“If you didn’t… who did?”

“I did.” A voice said from behind and when they all turned around, it was Jersey. “The witness saw me that day when I was bagging up Minty’s body and thought I was the killer. I ran off without finishing what I started. And I was also the one who tampered with the CCTV footage. My intentions were to cover up for Abby.” He confessed.

Abby gave him the ‘What are you doing?’ look but he ignored her.

“You knew all along? You kept quiet even when it was going on in your hospital?” Emma queried.

“Love makes one do stupid and crazy things.” He blurted out.

“Don’t listen to him,” Abby stated. “He doesn’t know what he is saying. I have been working alone.”

“Abby,”

“Shut up!” She interrupted him. “Stop getting involved in my business. We broke up, didn’t we? Get out of here.”

“I told you I am not going to leave you alone.” He let out.

“Why are you doing this, huh? Do you think I’m going to feel indebted to you? I don’t need your damn help or support. Just go.”

“I am not_” Jersey’s words were cut short when Abby pointed her gun at him once again.

“What are you doing?” Emma asked.

“Tell him to leave this place. He is not needed here.” She groaned.

“Drop down your weapon, Abby.” Emma warned.

“I want him out of here first or else I’m going to shoot!” She yelled, shooting daggers at Jersey through her eyes.

He was complicating matters for her. This wasn’t supposed to be a part of the plan. No one was meant to get involved in her mess. It was one reason why I chose to stay away from love or relationship.

She already chose her end path and now, Jersey’s stubbornness and involvement are going to ruin everything.

She doesn’t want him to pay for the crimes he committed for her sake.

He might lose his freedom for real by getting arrested.

She doesn’t want that for him.

How betrayed and hurt will his family feel if they get to know that their son has been covering up the traces of the murderer they’ve been searching for for two years?

“Shoot me, if you want but I am definitely not leaving you here alone. I deserve to be punished as much as you.” Jersey said.

“What did you do?” Abby asked, narrowing her eyes at him. “I was the one who committed all of the crimes. I killed my patients. I killed Tara. I killed Minty. I kidnapped Thelma. I should get punished…alone.”

“You kidnapped Thelma?” Emma asked.

“Wasn’t it obvious? I was the last person Thelma saw before disappearing, remember?”

“But you told me…” Emma’s voice trailed off.

“You didn’t expect me to tell you that I kidnapped Thelma, did you?” She sighed. “I’ve always pretended to be a saint because I didn’t want to be a suspect or lose your trust.”

“Why did you kidnap her?” Robert asked.

“She knew that Sandra didn’t kill Tara and seems like one of the janitors between Sammy or Luca told her about what Minty saw the night Tara died. I was scared of getting caught, so I offered her tea which was mixed with sleeping pills and after she drank it, she fell unconscious and I brought her here.”

“Where is she?” Emma asked, looking around.

Abby glanced over at Jersey, dropping her hand down.

“I haven’t taken her out of here, Abby. She is still where you left her.”

Emma ran her fingers through her hair. “I can’t believe you did all this, Abby. Like seriously, who the hell are you? How can you be so evil?”

“Emma,” Abigail called out softly, taking a quiet step toward her best friend. “I’m sorry. I know apologizing won’t make up for what I did but believe me, the only mistake I made was killing Minty.”.

“And your patients? They were innocent people, Abby. You shouldn’t have killed them.”

“I saved them.”

“Only psychos think like this. You’ve been through a lot, I know. But killing innocent people? Abby, you’ve offended the law.” Emma paused. “When you asked me if you commit a crime will I arrest you, do you remember what my answer was?”

Abby nodded her head as she answered. “‘I will take you far away from here and we will live a peaceful life because there’s no way I’m going to arrest my best friend’ Those were your exact words to me.”

“And now, I don’t think I can fulfill that promise, Abby. You are a murderer. I…I…I can’t turn a blind eye to your crimes.”

“I know. There’s no happy ending for me and believe me, I am ready to accept my fate. However,” Abby dropped the gun to the floor and took further steps towards her friend. “You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I love you. You are my friend, sister from another mother, my guardian angel. And I’m sorry that things have to end this way between us. I’m so sorry that I turn out to be the murderer you desperately wanted to catch two years ago. I’m sorry for everything, Emma.” Tears slipped out of her eyes and Emma couldn’t stop the gasp that left her mouth.

“Ab…Abby…yo…you are crying…”

“I wanted to share the good news with you the very day I found out I could cry again but I didn’t know how to explain to you how it happened if you asked.”

“How do you mean?” Emma asked in a whisper, putting down her gun as well.

Abby sniffled, wiping off the tears from her cheek.

“The day I…killed Minty…” She saw the disappointment that clouded Emma’s face and she felt ashamed of herself. “Listen, I never intended to kill her. She wasn’t supposed to be a victim.”

“You killed her because she was a witness.” Emma said. “I know.”

Abigail nodded her head. “Yeah. And her death was what triggered me to start crying and then I discovered that I’ve made a mistake and I felt like a monster and…”

“…decided to surrender.” Emma completed the sentence.

“Yes.”

“Ugh. You are so unwise, honey.” Frederick said, grabbing everyone’s attention, and immediately, Jersey punched the man very hard on his jaw. “Ow, F**k!”

“You bastard, this is all your fault. You made her this way!” Emma screamed and pounced on him as well, punching the living daylight out of him.

“Emma,” Robert quickly pulled her away from the man who was laughing like a maniac.

“What have I always told you about crying?” Frederick asked Abby. “You choose to become weak at the very end. You are a shame.”

Abby smirked and grasp his tied arm. “Frederick, do you know the path I chose?”

“Jail.” He snarled. “You are a murderer and would be locked up behind bars. You made a mistake by surrendering, honey.”

“You are also going to jail, bastard!” Emma yelled.

“Emma, calm down.” Robert muttered.

“I can’t. Because of this bastard, Abby became this way and now…now, I’m going to get my best friend arrested. Do you know how heartbreaking it is?”

“I know,” Abby said. “Which is why I’ve decided to end it differently.”

Everyone had a frown on their faces.

“What do you mean?” Jersey asked.

She gave them a bittersweet smile. “Jersey, thank you for loving me. Emma, thank you for being a sister to me. Robert, please take care of her. And Ginny, stop stressing her.”

“What do you want to do, Abby?” Emma asked, tears rolling down her face.

“I want to end it all…monsters shouldn’t live among humans.” With that said, she pulled Frederick with her and jumped off the rooftop.

“No!!!”
