âWhat happened?â Irene asked in a shaky voice.
âItâs Mum..â Damien said, st©pping to catch his breath.
âWhat happened to mum?â Irene almost screamed.
âSheâs not.. moving anymoreâ He bur-sted out crying.
Irene stood rooted to the sp©t trying to process what he just said.
She screamed loudly when reality dawned on her.

âLetâs go homeâ she cried taking Damienâs hand.
Harold stood up dropping his fork in the process.
âYou guys should go to sleep, Donât wait up okay?â He said to Nola and Ivory.
They nodded worriedly and watched as Harold rushed out of the door.
He met Irene and Damien at the gate about to step out.
âIreneâ He called loudly and she turned.
His heart broke at how red her eyes looked.
Her cheeks were we-t.
He really felt for them.
âWait, weâll go in my carâ He said and his driver quic-kly got behind the wheels.
He got in and his driver drove to the gate where Damien and Irene were standing.
They hopped in slowly. Irene was sobbing while Damien just stared on.
Even with how red his eyes also looked, Harold could tell heâs a handsome guy, heâs gat the looks.
âEverything will be fine okay? Just keep calmâ Harold comforted them.
âS..sheâs the only family we have left, sheâs the only one who truly cared about us after our parents death, sheâs in that state because of us,Iâm working so i could pay for her surgery bills. She must not leaveâŠ.â Irene said in tears and Harold was de-eply moved.
Irene had told him about her stepmum during one of their nights in the libr@ry.
âItâs okay Ireneâ Damien comforted his sister even though tears was rolling down his own eyes too.
âI..is she really not moving?â Irene asked wiping her tears, hoping Damien would say heâs just joking.
âYes, sheâs not. I called you severally and i tried hiring a cab to take her to the hospital but i didnât have enough with meâ Damien said.
âplea-se drive fastâ Harold urged his driver.
The driver c@mÂŁ to a halt in front of Ireneâs house.
Irene and Damien rushed out of the car and Harold ran after them.
They entered the ap@rtment and truly the woman was laying unconsciously on the couch.
Irene shook her crying loudly.
âHold onâ Harold said and tried to get irene out of the way.
He felt Mrs Neave pulse and sighed in relief.
âSheâs not deadâ He announced.
Irene wiped her tears and sniffed as she moved closer. Join us to re-ad more intriguing stories from our facebook page #creativeafricantales
She felt Mrs Neaveâs pulse too and relief ran throu-gh her blood.
âBut her pulse is getting weak. Letâs quic-kly get her to the hospitalâ Harold said.
âMy pri-vate hospitalâ He added, lifting Mrs Neave.
Irene and Damien hurried after him.
___đ
âHer health is deteriorating, what took you so long to get her to do the surgery?â Doc Fern questioned irene.
âI..i was waiting for the mo..ney to complete but now i have more than half of the bills Iâll pay it,the surgery can continue while i go look for the restâ She said.
âMr Harold paid all of the expenses alre-adyâ Doc Fern said.
âWhat!â Irene exclaimed, turning to look at Harold who was looking at his feet.
He doesnât want to be seen by people or thereâd be a scene.
âNo thank you. plea-seâ He said, not raising up his head.
Damien stared at him in disbelief.
âFern, the surgeries should be as soon as possible plea-se, including her legâs tooâ Harold said.
âYeah, the specialists will be flying in tomorrow morning, weâve stabilised her nowâ Doc Fern said.
âOkay, thank you so much. Can we go see her now?â Harold asked.
Irene and Damien were still stunned by Haroldâs act of kindness.
Her eyes were laced with tears as she felt so grateful to him.
The surgery bill is a whole lot of money and he settled it?
Why is he being so nice to her?
Heâs
a philanthropist, she knows butâŠthis is just too much.
âNo,until after the surgeries are doneâ Doc Fern said.
âOhh.. okayâ Harold said.
âPermit me to go check on other patients Mr Haroldâ Doc Fern said.
âAlright Docâ Harold said.
âAnd you insist on not staying in my officeâ Doc Fern said.
âYeah, Iâm fine hereâ Harold insisted.
âMr Harold youâre a public figure, as soon as you get figured out, reporters will buzz in like fliesâ Doc Fern said.
âDonât bother Fern, itâs night alre-adyâ Harold said.
âThat doesnât st©p people from figuring you out but itâs fine if you insistâ Doc Fern shrugged before walking away.
âThank you, thank you, thank you so much Mr Haroldâ Damien said about going on his knees before Harold st©pped him.
âCâmon Damien, itâs fineâ He said and Damien smiled.
âA billionaire just t©uçhed him and called his name and not just a billionaire but his role model, the person he has been aspiring to meetâ Damien thought happily.
Heâs just realising Haroldâs presÂŁnce now after confirming his mumâs health.
He was completely blind before.
âHarold, not againâ Irene said cleaning her tears.
âItâs okay Ireneâ Harold said drawing her close.
âReally?â Damien grinned.
âShe can be a cry baby at timesâ Damien said to Harold and he nodded.
âI know rightâ He tea-sed her dragging her we-t cheeks pla-yfully and she laughed.
âThank youâŠso muchâ She muttered.
âWe really appreciate, Mr Haroldâ Damien added.
âItâs fine⊠enough of the âthank youâ here and thereâ Harold said.
âThank youâ Irene said.
âArrghâ Harold gro-an ed pla-yfully and they laughed.
âDo
you mind using my face cap, people might actually figure you out as doc Fern said and its gonna cause a hvge scene. I know itâsâŠfaded buâŠâ Damien was saying.
âI donât mindâ Harold interrupted him and collected the face cap from him without second thought.
Damien stared at him with mouth wi-de opened as he wore the face cap.
Irene laughed seeing the surprised look on her brotherâs face.
âOh..no. Harold Marshall is putting on my face capâ he screamed inwardly.
He blinked severally still trying to take it in.
He never thought Harold Marshall will accept it, he was re-ady for his rejection but he surprised him instead.
âIs⊠that my face cap youâre putting on?â Damien asked Harold, he couldnât believe it, he have to be sure.
âYou gave it to meâ Harold said..
âHeâs just so shocked you can be putting on his face capâ Irene said.
âReally?â Harold asked.
âYeahâ Irene nodded.
âThank youâ Damien said.
âEnough of the thank youâ Harold said.
âIâm not thanking you for settling my mumâs billsâ Damien said.
âWhat are you thanking me for?â Harold asked.
âPutting on my face capâ Damien said.
âNo..i should thank you insteadâ Harold said.
âI know my Irene might have not told you how long Iâve been aspiring to meet you, youâre my role model, meeting you physically has always been in my dreams, even before Irene started working for you, Iâve been looking up to you, i also want to be a great philanthropist, youâve being a great inspiration to me Mr Harold Marshallâ Damien said and Harold stared at him speechless.
âWow! Thank you for looking up to me. Come boy, we nee-d to talkâ Harold held Damien by the hand and they both walked to the chairs.
Irene watched them and seeing the happy look on her brotherâs face made her smile.

âYou
havenât sle-pt?â Nola asked Ivory who walked into the kitchen in her nightwear, hvgging her hvge teddy bear to her che-st.
She shook her head â I canâtâ
âWhy?â Nola asked, almost done with cleaning the kitchen.
She was about to go sleep with Ivory in her be-droom cause every worker here is not to be trusted.
âIâm worriedâ Ivory said sadly.
âIâm worried tooâ Nola said, she has been thinking about Ireneâs mumâs health as she cleaned the kitchen.
âCome hereâ She consoled ivory by putting her in a hvg and ru-bbing her hair.
âEverything will be fineâ She muttered.
âI donât want to sleep alone tonight, Iâm scared. I miss Ireneâ Ivory said.
âOf course you wonât be slee-ping alone, let me finish cleaning the kitchen and weâll both go to my room. Iâll re-ad you interesting be-dtime storiesâ Nola said and Ivory nodded with a smile.
âWhat should i help you with?â She asked.
âIâm almost done ivory, thereâs nothing left for you to doâ Nola said.
âOkay Nolaâ Ivory said, toying with her teddy bear.
âGo sit in the dining room while i round upâ Nola said, knowing she nee-ded time to think about the be-dtime stories to tell Ivory.
âOkayâ ivory hopped to the dining room.
She dropped her teddy bear on the table and sli-pped her footwear off her feet.
She stood in the middle of the spacious dining room and started practicing the ballet they were taught earlier in the day.
It seems more difficult without music but being Ivory, she imagined the music pla-ying in her head and started dancing perfectly.
She so much love dancing, she canât wait to be a grown up so she can show the world how much of a gem ballet is.
âIvoryâ Someone called her but she didnât st©pped.
She knew it wasnât Nola, Nola would never have disturbe-d her while sheâs dancing.
âIvoryâ She heard again and gro-an ed before st©pping.
She saw it was one of the maids named..Marie throu-gh the name tag on her dress.
âWhat do you want? How dare you interrupt me?â Ivory yelled.
She knew her dad would have reprimanded her if he was here but sometimes these maids nee-ds to be yelled at.
âIâm sorry for yelling but what do you want?â Ivory asked.
âWhy havenât you gone to be-d? Go to be-d nowâ Marie ordered.
âExcuse me?â Ivory asked wondering why the lady had so much command in her voice. Irene whoâs her nanny doesnât even speak to her in that manner.
âHey! Youâre not my nanny and you donât have the right to order me around, your job here is to take care of the house and not me!â Ivory said.
âShut up little⊠Just go to be-dâ Marie said sternly. âNowâ She added.
âAre you out of your s-en-ses Marie?â Nola asked walking out of the kitchen.
Marie fumed on seeing her, she never knew Nola was in the kitchen.
âHow dare you speak to Ivory that way, youâre not allowed to do that okay? Youâre just a common maid here, get that into your head!â Nola warned.
âI was only trying to get her to be-dâŠ.â Marie was saying.
âBy forcing her?â Nola asked.
She never liked Marie from the start.
âItâs late alre-adyâ Marie said.
âYouâre not supposed to order her to go to be-d in the first place okay? If you try this again, Iâll have to report you to Mr Haroldâ Nola said and Marie walked away angrily.
âLetâs go to be-d Ivoryâ Nola said and took ivoryâs hand.
**
đIf you canât do it, just go call on Alex.
đWell, itâs not like i canât. Iâd do anything to hurt the girl, sheâs so rude and spoilt but the thing isâŠ
đWhat?.. hurry up, Carrle mustnât wake upâŠ
đThe girl is not in her room anymore, Nola alre-ady took her to her room.
đWhat! Why did you allow that happen?â Ethan yelled.
đI wa..â Marie was saying.
đYou know what? Youâre so dumb! Get the hell off my phoneâ Ethan disconnected the call angrily.
âDamn!â Marie swore.
__đ Next Morning đ__
âDamien just go prepare for school, Iâll be with Mumâ Irene said for the umpteenth time.
âI donât want to leaveâ Damien said.
âMum will be fine, she wonât be glad you missed clas-ses because of herâ
âYou should go to school, youâll still get to check on her when youâre back, even if you wait, you wonât be able to see her till theyâre done with the surgeries and i guess itâll take more than a day so just go to school, sheâll be fineâ Harold said.
âOkayâ Damien said, stepping down from the be-d.
The had sle-pt in an empty ward containing two be-ds.
Harold sle-pt in one while Irene and Damien shared one.
âGo tell my driver to take you home and drop you in school after youâre done preparingâ Harold said.
His driver had went home yesternight and c@mÂŁ back this morning.
âHuh? He should drop me in school too?â Damien asked.
âYeahâ Harold said.
Damien glanced at his sister and she shrugged.
âThank youâ Damien grinned, alre-ady imagining the look thatâll be on his everyoneâs face when he steps down from the limousine.
âI should leave nowâ He hvgged his sister and waved to.
He beamed as he walked to the door, the conversation he had with Harold yesternight had been awesome.
Harold Marshall is even more intelligent than Damien thought heâd be, he proved himself worthy to be a role model.
Heâs everything Irene had mentioned and he didnât regret choosing to look up to him.
âWill i meet you here when Iâm back from school?â Damien asked, holding the door knob.
âOf courseâ Harold said.
âNo, heâll be going to workâ Irene said and Harold glanced at her.
âOhhâ Damien said,a bit sadly.
âByeâ He added before walking out of the door.
âI never told you i was going to workâ Harold faced Irene.
âYou go to work everyday and i wouldnât allow you miss work today because of my mumâ
âI own the work youâre talking about. I can decide not to go and everything will still be in placeâ
âI know but plea-se you canât miss work just because of us. You did so much alre-adyâ Irene said.
âGood morning Mr Harold, Ireneâ Doc Fern said, walking into the ward .
âGood morningâ
âI know you must have felt so uncomfortable on the be-d,you should go home now and have a rest â Doc Fern said to Harold..
âNo, itâs fineâ Harold said.
âOhhâŠokay, the surgeries will begin once the specialists are here,so Iâll want you both to go home, clean up and probably eat before they arriveâ
âOhh..okay, i should call Eric to drive here after he drops Ivoryâ Harold said and Irene smiled.
They had talked to Ivory and Nola over the phone this morning and she miss the little girl overnight, she missed dressing her up for school too.
đHey Eric..â Harold said into the phone.
đ Good morning Mr Harold.
đ Good morning, drive straight to the hospital after you drop Ivory.
đI dropped her alre-ady, Iâll be coming right away.
đOhh⊠okay.
âDo you nee-d anything before your driver arrive?â Doc Fern asked.
âNo, weâre fine⊠Irene do you nee-d anything?â Harold asked.
âNoâ Irene shook her head even though she badly wanted to take water.
âI guess the young sir has gone to schoolâ Doc Fern said.
âYeahâ Irene smiled.
âAlright thenâ Doc Fern said before walking out of the door.
âEric will get here soonâ Harold said to irene who was repacking her hair.
He smiled as their gazes locked.
âWhy..are you being so nice to me?â Irene asked.
âYou think thereâs a reason?â Harold asked.
âI know youâre a philanthropist Harold but do you want anything from me⊠Iâll..gladly give youâ Irene said.
âYou will?â Harold asked.
âYesâ Irene shifted closer to him.
She has feelings for Harold and at this point she doesnât even care if he finds out or not.
What lingers in her mind right now is if he feels the same way for her.
She had caught him stare at her several timesâŠ.but that doesnât mean he feels the same way for her too.
âWhat i want from you is not the reason Iâm doing all these, i helped you because i wanted to, nothing attached.â
âOkay,Iâm glad you really want something from me, Iâll gladly do anything for you?â Irene said.
âI like you Irene. I have feelings for youâ Harold said and her heart pumped twice fas-ter.
âAnd i want to know if you trust me enough to put your heart in my careâ Harold added and Irene felt her world spin.
She swallowed ha-rd , wondering if this was a dream.
âYesâŠyesâŠyesâ Her mind screamed but her eyes and mouth remained pinned.
Her cheeks were almost the same colour as red roses.
âGood morning Mr Haroldâ The door opened.
Alex, Tom and Eric stepped in and with one glance at IreneâŠAlex knew what was going on.
TbcâŠ.
