(WHAT HAPPENED FIVE YEARS AGO)

•••••

“Did… Did I just hear that correctly?” Zara asked no one in particular.

“I think you did because I heard the same thing,” Ayden muttered, staring at the closed door which both men had walked out from.

“What’s wrong?” Paige queried, staring between the two friends.

“Trust me when I say, you are not going to understand,” Zara said in a whisper. “But, can I ask you a question?”

Paige hesitantly nodded her head. “Sure. What is it?”

“Your boss… Has he ever lived in Mexico?”

Paige thought about it for a few seconds and then shook her head. “No, I don’t think so.”

“You don’t think so? That means you do not know, right?” Ayden questioned from where he remained seated.

“Well, I started working for the Ca-ssano family when they moved to Las Vegas.” She slightly shrugged. “However, I do know that they stayed in Italy before relocating here. Why do you ask?”

“No reason. We were just wondering how they both know each other.” The two friends answered.

“They could have known each other in elementary, high school, or college. Or maybe my nanny’s stepfather lived in Italy for some time before going to Mexico. If you are curious, you could just ask him.” Aurora said, grabbing everyone’s attention.

“Uhm, how old are you?” Ayden asked the little girl.

“Five years old but I will be turning six in a few months.” She replied.

“Wow. Five years old and you are this smart?” He clic-ked his tongue, “Tsk, that’s amazing.”

“My parents are smart, especially my daddy, so what do you expect?” She bragged.

“I can see that.”

The door opened and Sean walked in with two nurses.

“Good morning, everyone.” He greeted, moving his gaze to Zara who wasn’t paying him any attention.

“Good morning,” Everyone replied aside from Zara.

He walked over to Diamond and started going throu-ghthe machines to see if everything was working perfectly.

“You are the doctor who promised to make my nanny okay, aren’t you?” Aurora’s tiny voice filled the room, breaking the silence.

“Yes, I am. You remembered me.”

“Of course, you are taking care of my sweet nanny, I shouldn’t forget your face. What is your name?”

“I am Dr. Sean. What’s yours?”

“Aurora.” She introduced.

“Nice to meet you, Aurora.” He smiled.

“We’ve met before, haven’t we?”

“Well, our first time meeting wasn’t… the best, you remember?”

Her mouth formed into an ‘O’ shape and she giggled softly.

“It’s my fault. I’m sorry for threatening you like that.”

“It’s fine.”

“However, I will sue this hospital if my nanny doesn’t wake up and I’m not apologizing for being honest.” She said.

“Okay.”

Sean checked the IV and the heart monitor as well. By the time he was done, he started scribbling something on the cli-pboard in his hand.

“Do you have a girlfriend?” Aurora asked out of the blue, catching everyone unaware.

“Miss Aurora!” Paige called out in an attempt to scold her. “You shouldn’t ask that.”

“Oh. Are you offended by my question, Dr. Sean?” She pouted.

“No, dear. I’m not.”

“You see, he is not offended.” Aurora said to Paige and then turned her full attention to the doctor. “Answer the question then. Do you have a girlfriend?”

“Well…” Sean cleared his throat, giving Zara a side glance but she quickly looked away from him when she noticed his gaze on her. “It’s complicated, dear. My girlfriend is mad at me and she might end up breaking up with me.”

“Really? It’s her loss. You are handsome and if I was her, I will hold on to you forever.”

“Aren’t you too young to talk about these things?” Sean asked.

“I am. But I am also smart to know these things. My nanny is single. I would have loved you and her to be together but no, I have someone else in mind for her.” The little girl beamed.

“You do?” Ayden finally entered the conversation. “Who?”

“That is none of your business.”

“Ouch, that burns.” One of the nurses teased, trying to hide her smile.

Ayden shot her a glare but didn’t say anything to her.

“Okay, that’s a good thing because I still love my girlfriend.” Sean said.

”Rubbish. Listen, if your girlfriend breaks up with you, tell me. I am going to introduce you to someone much better than her. For instance, Paige,” She pointed at the maid standing beside Zara.

Sean averted his gaze to look at Paige and in the process, caught Zara staring at him.

Aurora stepped forward toward the doctor and tapped him on the thigh, he looked down at her.

“Yes?”

“Can you come down to my level?”

“Uhm… Am I saved? The last time…”

She quickly shook her head. “I promise not to do anything like that. I just want to tell you something.” She stated.

“Okay?”

He crouched down to her level and then she leaned towards him and whispered to his ears.

“I see you are interested in Zara. You’ve been stealing glances at her. I could speak to her on your behalf if you want.”

“Nah, don’t worry. I can handle it myself.”

“Ah, you just admitted that you like her. That’s nice. Well, here is something you should know.” She lowers her voice. “She has also been stealing glances at you. Shush, don’t let her know I told you anything.”

“Really?” Sean felt super excited about this news.

“Yeah.” She pulled away from her and said out loud, “It seems like you are going to be the one to break up with your girlfriend.”

Zara started coughing.

“Are you okay?” Paige immediately asked.

“Yeah. I’m fine. Thank you.”

Aurora went back to sit beside her nanny and smiled at Sean.

“See you around, little girl.”

“Yeah. You’ve become my favorite doctor. I think I want to grow up and become a doctor.”

“Are you inspired by me?”

“Actually, I want to be a doctor because I want to help people like my nanny.”

“Oh.”

“Don’t feel bad, you are admirable, though.”

“I should leave now,” Sean said, handing the cli-pboard over to one of the nurses. “Bye!” He waved to Aurora.

She grinned and waved back.

Sean and the nurses left the ward.

“You talk too much, Aurora. Do you know that?” Zara said throu-ghclenched teeth.

“Uh…”

“You know what, never mind.” Zara gave out a fake chuckle. “I need fresh air.” She left the room.

“Did I do something wrong?” Aurora asked others in the room, her gaze solely on Ayden.

Ayden shrugged, gazing at the ceiling as if it is the most interesting thing in the world.

DR. JOHN’S HOUSE**

“You know you are acting like a kid right now,”

“What do you mean? And please, if you are here to talk about the shit going on in my life, I guess you should just keep quiet and ignore me.” Diego gro-aned, taking a sip from the glas-sof whiskey.

“First of all, isn’t it too early to be drinking?”

“Are you going to take it away from me now or what?” He rolled his eyes, taking another gulp.

“This is not healthy for your health, Diego.”

“This is one disadvantage of having a friend that’s a doctor.”

“Haha. Very funny. Anyway, don’t you think it is time for you to go back to your wife?”

“Wife?” He scoffed. “I guess I haven’t told you yet.”

John creased his brows, seeming interested and confused. “Tell me what?”

“My intentions. What I plan to do soon.” He answered.

“I don’t understand…fuc-k ing hell, tell me it’s not what I think.”

Diego stared at his friend and shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe.”

“Diego, are you kidding me right now? You want to divorce Layla, is that it?”

“Why are you shouting?”

“Why shouldn’t I shout? Isn’t this enough reason for me to shout? What is wrong with you?”

“What is wrong with me?” Diego repeated, sitting upright on the couch. “That bit-ch cheated on me, don’t you get it?”

“That bit-ch is your wife, do I need to remind you about that?”

“You don’t need to remind me, okay? Because I regret ever marrying such a wh*re.”

“Diego!”

“What? You of all people should be on my side. Why are you blaming me for her unfaithfulness? How would you fuc-k ing feel if the wife you trusted so much with everything cheats on you with her ‘supposed’ best friend, huh? Answer me.”

Dr. John let out a de-ep sigh. “Can’t you at least listen to her explanation?”

“What does she have to explain other than to give pointless excuses for the reason why she cheated on me? I don’t want to talk about her, John. Please respect my decision. If you can’t do that,” He shook his head. “Then it’s best that I leave your house.”

“Diego, you have every right to be mad at your wife but I really think you should go and see her.” He advised.

“Wait, is this your way of telling me to get the fuc-k out of your house?”

“What? No! Of course not. I would never do that and you know it.”

“I don’t know anymore, John. Because it sounds like you are trying to push me out of your house.” He said.

“I’m sorry if that’s how you feel.” John apologized. “I just think your wife must be hurting as she is waiting for your return.”

“And you think I’m not hurting? Look at me, John. Am I the kind of man who stays at home at a time like this drinking fuc-k ing whiskey? I should be in my office, working. But hell, how can I, when I can’t seem to concentrate and get things done? I’m hurting too, okay? I’m hurting.” He poured himself another glas-sand gulped the whole thing in the cup, cringing a little.

“There is a reason why I want you to go back home. I should have told you about it sooner but I think Layla should be the one to share the good news with you.”

Diego furrowed his brows. “Good news? What are you talking about?”

John gro-aned inaudibly as he stood up to his feet and dusted off imaginary dirt from his trousers.

“If you are curious, then go back home. The answer awaits you there.” He said and walked away.

“What?”

•••••

PARKING LOT**

“What are you doing here? How did you find me? How long have you known about Diamond? Were you the one who stabbed her? Did you do it to spite me? Did you_”

“I see you have a lot of questions for me, Octavius.” Mikhail cut him off in a calm tone. “But too bad, I am the one who is asking the questions and not you.”

“I need answers, Ca-ssano. I know you have a lot to ask me about what happened five years ago but you need to answer my questions first before I can answer yours.”

“Who said I need your permission to ask my questions?”

“What…what?”

Suddenly, someone knocked Rhodes unconscious from behind.

It was Marcello.

“Put it into the car trunk and let’s get out of here.”

“Yes, sir.” Marcello threw Rhodes over his shoulder and walked towards the car.

•••••

CLIFF**

“Wake him up,” Marcello said, leaning against the hood of his car.

Marcello carried a bucket of water and splashed it on Rhodes’s face.

Rhodes gasped for air, snapping his eyes open. He started coughing.

“What… What just happened?” He stuttered.

“Welcome back, I thought you were dead.” Mikhail said.

“What…” Rhodes surveyed his surroundings and his eyes wide-ned when he figured out that he was standing at the edge of the cliff, a car was right in front of him – A few miles away and there was a driver behind the wheel.

Rhodes tried to move but noticed that his legs and hands are tied, making him completely helpless.

He gulped nervously, averting his gaze to Mikhail who was standing in front of him.

“What are you doing? Do you want to kill me?”

“Kill you?” Mikhail repeated, “Of course not. Not until you answer all of my questions.”

“Fine. I will answer your questions if that is what you want but you have to tell me something first.”

“Speak,”

“Why did you stab my stepdaughter? How long have you known her? Did you she is my daughter all the times she has been with you? Did you do this so you can lure me out of my hole and kill me?” Rhodes asked all at once.

“I will provide you with one answer,” He said. “Yes. I knew she was your daughter all the times she has been working for me as my daughter’s nanny.”

Rhodes’s face dropped immediately.

“That means you stabbed her to spite me, isn’t it?”

“I told you, I will only give you one answer.” Mikhail bellowed. “It’s my turn to ask the questions now.” He pushed himself off the car hood and stepped closer. “I am going to be asking you three questions, one lie you tell is going to take you one step back. So I will be very honest if I were you.” He said in his usual dark and intimidating voice.

Rhodes looked over the cliff and he couldn’t even see the depth of it.

No one is going to survive it if they fall off into a place like this.

“Are you scared?” Mikhail scoffed. “Don’t worry you are not going to fall off if you are completely honest with me.”

“What do you want?”

“Just as you’ve said. I want the truth about what happened five years ago.”

•••••

HOSPITAL★ GARDEN**

Zara sat on the bench, staring at the children playing and some patients were Lost in their own thoughts, just like her.

She heard footsteps and then someone sat down beside her.

“Here,” Sean handed her a paper cup of coffee.

She turned to face him and frowned.

“Why are you giving this to me?”

“I thought you might need it.” He said.

“Hmm.” She hesitated before collecting it and took a sip. “Thank you.”

“What are you thinking about?” He asked after a moment of silence.

She shrugged. “Nothing serious.”

“Zara, whatever happened in the ward, don’t take it to heart. Aurora is still a child, although she is smart. I give her that. But_”

“Are you trying to explain her last statement?” She huffed. ”Do you think I care?”

“Zara_”

“I shouldn’t be here.” She gave him back the cup of coffee he had given to her and left the garden.

Sean wanted to call her back but refrained from doing so.

•••••

CLIFF**

“How much were you given to betray me?” Mikhail asked.

“I wasn’t paid to betray you,” Rhodes answered.

Mikhail stepped out of the way and the car moved close to Rhodes,

“fuc-k .” Rhodes hissed, taking a peek at the bottomless cliff, fear taking the better part of him.

“Be honest.”

“I swear, I wasn’t paid.” Mikhail was about to give the driver a go-ahead when Rhodes quickly said. “It was a deal.”

“A deal?”

“I did what I did to save my daughter.”

“What do you mean?” Mikhail creased his brows. “How is your daughter related to this?”

Rhodes did not answer.

Mikhail gave the driver a go-head and the car moved forward once again.

“Oh, God.”

“fuc-k ing answer my question.” Mikhail said throu-ghclenched teeth. “How is your daughter involved in this?”

Rhodes gulped audibly.

“I needed to save my daughter. Her life was in danger and I had to stop it or I will regret it for the rest of my life.” He said.

“Be specific.”

He hesitated. “He wanted to kill Diamond, my daughter and I tried to stop him. I didn’t know how but it seems like he knew her when she was little. Anyway, while we were still arguing, someone came into the office with a better offer.” He paused. “She made a deal with him.”

“First of all, who is this man? And secondly, who is the girl that came to make a deal with him?”

Rhodes did not answer immediately. It was as if he was thinking about the day.

“Julius Santiago.”

“Julius Santiago?” Mikhail repeated as he tried to remember the man who bears the name. “Wait, is it the Julius Santiago I know?”

“Yes.”

“What the fuc-k ? Julius and I had no problems, why will he hurt my wife!?”

“Julius never had a problem with you however, he had a problem with your wife and the girl who made the deal with him made it much easier for him to get what he wanted. However, I had to betray you by taking part in the deal to save my daughter.”

“What do you mean by he had a problem with my wife? I don’t get it. How?”

“My daughter, your wife, and Lottie knew this man when they were little. I don’t know how but it seems like it.”

“Wait. Did you just say Lottie?” Mikhail frowned.

“Yes. She was the girl who came to make a deal with Julius Santiago.”

“What!!”

•••••

POLICE STATION**

Lottie came down from the black vehicle and stood beside it, staring at the building of the police station.

She had dark sungla-sses on and black attire.

She stylishly took off her gla-sses and smirked, remembering her promise to the nanny at the amusement park.

(“If you cross my path again, I will be making a deal with the devil.”)

Lottie tilted her head to the side and smiled like a psychopath.

“You leave me no choice, dear nanny. Since you refused to die, I am going to be surprising you. Just stay right where you are and watch me bring your past into your present.”

She locked the car and goes into the building.
