Chapter twenty eight ?️?️

Hey Cole. I have one more favor to ask.”

“My long lost Jada contacted me months later just to ask for a favor? I’m hurt.” He says making me roll my eyes.

“Julia and Julian Holmes. I nee-d you to look them up and send the details.”

“Like old times. Told you, you’ll always nee-d me.” He says and I crack a smile but when my eyes shift to Jayden, the smile disappears.
“I’ll wait for the info in an hour.” I say.

“Or maybe less.” He adds and I cut the call.
“As we wait, can you tell me what you did to make Ian talk?” I ask making him sigh.

“We weren’t supposed to dig into each other’s lives. Remember?” He says looking into my eyes a sm-irk gracing his li-ps.

“You cut his foot with a chainsaw. How I’m I supposed to look past that?” I ask moving closer to where he’s sitting.

“Everyone has their moments Jada. People call you Candice at the base. I look past that. You also tortured that man, I watched the look on your face. You enjoyed it.

But I’m not asking anything. You don’t want to tell me anything about yourself but here I tell you things about myself.” He shouts by the time he’s done. I don’t flinch or react.

“So you want me to trade a secret for yours?” I ask shaking my head and he shrugs.

“You could.” He only states nonchalantly. I immediately think of something to tell him.
“I changed my name because I nee-ded a new life.

The Mafia recognizes me as Candice Martins because I joined them as Candice Martins but to the outside world, I’m Jada Costa.” I say and he nods. He stands from the armchair and walks to me. He places his hands on my hips.

“I figured that much. The question is why would you change your identity?” He whispers his mint breath fanning my face. I look away from his intense blue eyes.

“You can’t do that. I already told you a secret. Now it’s your turn.” I say not moving from the position. I don’t want to make him think he intimidates me. He lets out a laugh.

“You play dirty. My kind of game.” He whispers near my ear before he releases me and walks to his kitchen.

He pours himself a gl@$$ of Bourbon. “When I was fifteen, my brother got involved with some bad guys.

They would give him drugs and he would deliver them. We weren’t rich at that time and my dad had debts.”

“I would wonder where he got the money and when I asked him, he would never tell me. One day, I saw him wrap lot’s of cash into a bag and placed it in mum’s bag thinking nobody saw him and so I decided to follow him.

If the money was rightfully earned, he wouldn’t sneak around with it.” He chu-gs down the liquid and pours another one.

“I followed him to downtown and I saw these men give Jake an envelope.

They talked and when they were done, he walked into a club. I couldn’t go inside and so I looked for some other way in and I found a back door.

I got in and saw my brother handing another man the envelope.

They took out some white substance that I now know it was cocaine and sniffed it but immediately got out their guns.”

“I reacted. My brother was going to get killed and I couldn’t watch.

He caught me before I got to any of them and told them that he was babysitting me that night and thought I was asleep before getting out.

The men made a deal with Jake. They wouldn’t touch me if I worked for them too.” He says and stops.
I realize I was too engrossed in the story. Imagining a fifteen year old Jayden and a seventeen year old Jacob.

“There is when I first killed. I was sixteen then. We had to get out. We wanted out and the only way was to kill them. Jake brou-ght them together at a place saying he had very important information and they all had to be there. We blew up the place but one escaped.

He went after Jake and when he almost killed him, I hit his head with a rock until it was unnoticeable.”

I look at Jayden. He has a faraway look. He then starts laughing. I look at him confused as he mutters something. “What?” I ask and he faces me.

“He still died. He was still murdered by some gang. He was murdered by Julian Holmes.” His jaw tenses as he gulps the remaining drink before aggressively throwing the gl@$$ against the wall. I cautiously move towards him.
“Jayd…”

“Leave.”

“Bu…”

“I SAID LEAVE!” He roars and for the first time I flinch. I walk towards his door and before I get out I look at his direction to see his shoulders shaking.

My eyes widen at the display but I say nothing and just get out and walk to my apa-rtment.

‘Is Jayden blaming himself for not protecting his brother?’ I ask myself.

I walk to my room and get rid of the leather boots and pa-nts. I take off the jacket too as I walk to my closet and find a pair of black sweatpa-nts that I put on.

I walk to my kitchen and pour myself a gl@$$ of wine as I think about Jayden. He seemed so broken and it’s been years since I comforted anyone or found comfort in anyone. I don’t even know how to do that anymore.

Should I just hu-g him as my mum and dad always did? My sister Elisa, preferred to be left alone and my brother Aaron drank into oblivion.

Ash… He would prefer to be alone but I would tease him or se-duce him. My phone pings making me look to my side for it.

I see Cole’s name appear and some attached docu-ments. I open the docu-ments immediately.

Julia and Julian Holmes died in a car crush when they were eighteen. I look at their photos and I see Shawn Bullocks and Alexis. They both have brown hair here.

Shawn dyed his to blonde but Alexis never changed anything about herself. Confident much?

They lived in Florida for five years before they moved to Las Vegas and stayed there until they turned eighteen. I pick up my phone and call Cole.

“Could you please track Alexis for me?” I say immediately and he tells me he’ll tell me in a few minutes. I check the time and see it’s eleven a.m. I have to meet Rosa at noon.

I take in a de-ep breath. Why would Ashton’s sister want to meet me after almost seven years?

I get up and start preparing myself. I’ll know when I get there. By the time I’m done, I hear a ping from my phone and I smile. Always believe in Cole as he always says.

I get out of my apa-rtment and walk to my neighbor’s and knock. A disheveled Jayden appears seconds later.

“Here’s Alexis position currently speaking. Get to her and you’ll have Julian.” He eyes my phone and I notice he’s drunk.

“Of course you’re drunk.” I scoff. “Julia won’t sit around and wait for you to get sober Jayden.

Get your act together.” I say and turn around and start walking to my car.

When I get in, I send the address to Jayden’s phone before driving.

Let’s see what Rosa has in sto-re for me.

Chapter twenty nine ?️?️

?Seven years ago ?

I hear something ring disturbing my sleep. “Get it Ash. Make it stop.”

I mumble trying to sleep again. The ringing doesn’t stop making me raise my head towards Ashton’s side of the bed but there’s no one.

I look at my bedside table to find my phone ringing. “Mum. It’s so early. What do you want?” I ask immediately I pick up and I hear laughter on the other side.

“Happy birthday Princess.” I hear my dad’s voice.

“Its eleven and she’s still in bed?” I hear my mum’s voice scolding.

“It’s her birthday. Let her sleep as long as she wants.” I hear my dad say making me smile. They always banter.

“Hey dad, hi mummy. Did you call so that you can speak to each other?” I ask as I let out a laugh in amusement. I feel the bed dip as Ashton comes behind me and emBr@ces me.

He kizzes my ne-ck and whispers a ‘happy birthday’ to me.

“Morning Mr Martins, morning Mrs Martins.” Ashton says into the phone and my mum greets him back happily.

“Did you sleep on the same bed?” My dad asks his voice low and I roll my eyes as Ash lets out a nervous breath. Dad always does this.

We talk for another five minutes until Aston receives a call and excuses himself. My parents hang up a minute later saying they had to prepare for work.

I stand then walk to the bathroom after picking out my clothes for the day. I had an afternoon cl@$$ but I had a morning shift at the mall. I work in a teenagers’ clothes sto-re.

The pay has been better than the last sto-re I worked in. I’ve always loved clothes. Designing has always been my p@$$ion.

I bathe as fast as I can and prepare myself. I walk to the kitchen where I find different types of food laid out but no Ashton. I walk around the house and find Ash talking to someone on the phone. He runs his hand throu-ghhis hair severally in frustration making me worry.

‘Who is he talking to?’

Don’t worry, I’ll take the first flight and be there.” He says pacing around but stops when he sees me. He looks at me in shock but plays it off a second later and I point to him towards the kitchen.

‘I’ll be in the kitchen.’ I mouth and he nods and smiles at me. I walk towards the kitchen and start taking out the plates and gl@$$es that we’ll nee-d for breakfast. I make Ashton’s cu-p of coffee just the way he likes as I try not to think about his call.

‘He’ll tell me everything like he always does.’ I say in my mind. But he said he’s leaving. I take in a de-ep breath as I pour the coffee in a cu-p. I feel his che-st on my back as he kizzes my ne-ck and I smile.

“Hey there. I feel like I haven’t seen you today.” I mumble as his kizz rises to my jaw making his way to my li-ps. He turns me around and kizzes me making me snake my arm around his ne-ck.

“I love you.” He says when he pa-rts from me and I smile he kizzes my cheek then kneels to my flat tummy. “And I love you too.” He kizzes my stomach then rises. “Let’s eat breakfast.” He says and I smile.

“I love you too.” I say as we walk to the set table. “And I love this breakfast.” I say excitedly as I sit and start placing the crispy bacon on my plate making Ashton laugh.

“Ruth prepared a pa-rty at her house. She just told me yesterday night.” I say after breakfast as we clean up.

“Yeah? At what time?” He asks distracted making me look at him in worry.

“As from seven. Is something bothering you babe?” I ask moving closer to him.

“You remember my friend Gina?” He asks and I nod unsurely. I vaguely remember the name.

“My childhood friend that moved away and we met some months back.” He says making me nod.

“Yeah. What about her?” I ask and he moves closer to me his green eyes looking into mine.1

“She just had a baby and there might be complications. I nee-d to see her.” He says making me furrow my eyebrows in confusion.

“Why?” I ask.

“She has no one. She told the hospital to call me.” He says but nothing makes sense.

“You still talk to her? She couldn’t just give out your number to the hospital.” I say making him nod. She called me a few months ago saying that the baby’s dad left and her parents hate her. She has no one.

” He says and I suddenly feel bad. I could be in the same predicament she’s in. I’m pregnant and Ashton could decide to just pack and leave. What if my parents could abandon me too?

“Oh my Gosh!” I exclaim. ” I’m so sorry. What complications does she have?” I ask and he tries to think. Okay?

“The hospital said I had to be there before they could disclose anything.” He says and I nod.

“When?” I ask.

“I have to book the first flight I can to Carli.” He says making me pout.

“But it’s my birthday. Why can’t you leave tomorrow morning?” I ask. I slightly feel angry at Gina.

“Baby? I have to go.” He says softly.

“But my birthday. I want to spend it with you.”

“And you will when I come back. Someone’s life is at stake here Candice. Can you stop thinking about yourself for once?” He shouts griping my hand. I freeze at his words.

“I… I have to go to the… I have to go to work. I… I’ll be here when you come b.. back.” I stammer. Ashton is always on edge for some time now and sometimes I forget that. I’ve always known he’s stressed but he never talks about it.

I pick up my purse and school bag since I’ll go straight to campus after my shift.

“Have a nice flight and tell Gina I said congratulations.” I say and walk out not knowing those were the last words I’d tell the love of my life.

Present

I arrive at the familiar house. I check the time. Five minutes to noon.
I look around as different memories of me and Ashton arise. I take in a de-ep breath and walk to the front door and knock.

The door is opened by a little girl around six or seven. I su-ck in a de-ep breath as I look at her eyes. Rosa’s kid?

“Ash, I said no opening the door.” I hear a voice that I recognize as Rosa’s.

“Hey Candice… Jada.” Rosa says smiling at me.
“Jada. Hey Rosa.” I say my face blank. “And Ashley?” I ask and Rosa lets out a sad smile as she nods.

I get into the house and notice it looks different. “It has changed.” I say.

“Yeah. Too many memories but I couldn’t bring myself to sell the place.” Rosa says.

“Who else leaves here?” I ask looking at Ashley.
“Just me. And now Ashley too. Her mother died last week and she left her un-der my care.” She says.

“And father?” I ask already dreading the question.
“Would you like anything to drink?” Rosa asks making me clench my jaw.
“Who’s child is this?” I ask looking at Rosa.

“I swear I never knew until last week. She called me on her death bed. Her name’s Gina.” She says making me gasp.

Tears of betrayal fill my eyes. I thought I was numb to these emotions. I somehow wished she was my long lost baby but who am I kidding? It was killed.

“Candice. I’m so sorry. Ash, never told anyone anything.” She says and I start laughing.
“I can’t believe this.”

I say in between laughs and I take one look at Ashley before getting up and leaving. I get into my car and drive for some hours. I fill up my gas and drive to the next place I can feel better.

“Jada.” Ryan’s voice calls when he gets into his room and sees me sitting on his bed. He runs to me and hu-gs me as I rele-ase all my pent up tears.
“I missed you so much baby.” I cry as I kizz the crown of his head covered by black hair. He looks at me with his green eyes. I look into them desperately.

They’re green but with light specks of blue. Ashton’s were so green. They reminded me of the the forest.

“I’m here mummy.” He says making me cry even more. Oh, Ryan.
