Chapter 3

❤️First Day ?

It’s the first day of school. Just like every other year…

The freshmen are panicking, the sophomores acting way too cool, the juniors are bored, and us seniors are laughing at all the commotion.

I walk over to the table and pick up my schedule.

Psychology, AP English, Advanced Calculus, AP History, Chemistry, Lunch, P.E., Spanish

What a schedule. Gym after lunch, Psychology at 8 a.m. and Spanish last period. I walk down the halls, milling around until I sp-ot Kim.

She runs up and grabs my schedule. “Yes! We have six cl@$$es together! I’m taking French this year.” She smiles and I laugh.

“Senior privileges this year!” I screech excitedly. “Cutting in the lunch line, the best parking lot, and longer lunch. God I love this place.” I breathe in the familiar scent of Lysol and chalk dust. It smells like home.

“Well, we better get to Psychology or Mrs. Stanning will kill us!” We jog to Room 201 and plop down into a seat just as the bell rings.

After first period is over, the rest of the day breezes by. It’s syllabuses, cl@$$room rules, and welcome back games each cl@$$.

I’m loving this day. When we get to lunch, Kim pulls an extra seat up. “What are you doing?” I ask.

She smiles. “i’ve invited a friend for lunch.”

I roll my eyes and am about to comment when my other friends, Sarah, Nikki, and Mark show up. Just to clarify, Sarah is the smarty pa-nts with her hu-ge vocabulary, Nikki is the blonde one that fits the stereotypes perfectly, and Mark is g@y.

“Hey, guys!” I stand and we gather in a group hu-g.

“Hey! Nice job in Chemistry today, your musical chairs skills are very impressive,” Mark says as he pulls my chair out for me. I sit down next to him and Sarah grabs my hand.

“I got your email. I can’t believe it! You’re getting engaged-”

“No, she’s not,” Nikki cuts in. “Didn’t you finish reading? She’s got four months to fall in love and break off this terrible engagement.

And engagement for which I am very jealous.”

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about, actually,” Kim says. “I invited someone to lunch.”

“Who?”

She pauses. “You’ll see.”

For the next few minutes, lunch goes smoothly and I momentarily forget the disaster that my parents have inflicted on me.

Then, he shows up. Looking muscular in a ti-ght blue shirt and jeans, he sits next to me and plants a kizz on my cheek.

“Hey, babe!” Connor says loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“You invited him?!” I yell, ignoring everyone’s stares.

“Yes!”

I sigh. Great. “Hi.”

He smiles a hu-ge, toothy smile. “Great to see you! So, I brou-ght you something.” he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small black box. “It’s from Tiffany’s. I hope you like it.”

I open the box slowly. Inside is a ring with a hu-ge diamond on the top. Engraved on the inside band is: Forever and Always. How original.

“It’s beautiful!” I’m momentarily distracted from the fact that he’s just given me my engagement ring. Then it hits me. “I’m not wearing this!” i shout.

His face is crestfallen. “Why not? Do you want a bigger diamond?”

I glance at Mark, Nikki, Kim, and Sarah whose faces are full of envy. I resist the urge to smile. “No, it’s perfect, but didn’t my mom tell you?”

“About you falling in love by Christmas Eve? Yeah, she told me. But I just thought I’d get my bid in early.”

I frown. “I’m engaged to you, that doesn’t mean that you have any say in who I date. You get that, right?”

“I get that. Can you wear it on your other ring finger, then? Just so you always have it?”

I think for a moment. There’s no harm in that. “Okay.” He takes the ring and gently puts it on my right ring finger. “Perfect,” he mutters.

I pull my hand away and glare at Kim. “Thanks so much, Kim.”

She smiles. “No problem! Oh, and you have a date tonight. Thomas Evers. He’s in your Spanish cl@$$.”

The bell rings and we get up to leave. Connor silently takes my trash and puts it in the trash can for me.

I smile… maybe he wouldn’t be such a bad husband after all.

But the idea of being married to him for the rest of my life scares me so much that I actually pray for my date tonight to go well.

Chapter 4

❤️ Date?

The date went really well in the beginning.

Thomas picked me up on time, we drove to the movies and saw a R0m-ntic comedy where he put his arm around me, and then we went to dinner at an Italian restaurant.

We had a secluded booth in the back and a candle was lit at our table. I ordered a salad and he ordered pasta.

“So… what’s your favorite color?” He asks politely.

I laugh. “Um… blue?”

He laughs with me. “Just trying to make polite conversation.”

“Well, we’ve known each other for four years, not much to talk about.” I look down at my salad.

“Yeah… how is it we have never gone out before?” He asks the question I’ve been dying to ask.

“Good question. I guess we just never had such a convenient opportunity.” Crap, I shouldn’t have said that.

“Why did Kim set us up? I never really thought you were my type and besides, Connor seems to have the impression that you guys are dating.

He even said that ring on your right hand is an engagement ring? But I think he’s just jealous because you won’t date him. Right?”

I take a long sip of my drink. Here goes nothing. “Um, not exactly.

We are engaged.” I pause at the confused and angry look on his face.

“But it’s sort of an open engagement. Let me explain.” I take a de-ep breath and continue:

“My parents made me get engaged to him because they nee-ded someone to take over his law firm and his parents agreed to merge the two companies if we were married.

I protested and we agreed that if I fall in love by Christmas Eve and that guy agrees to marry me, then I won’t have to marry-”

“Wait, so you expect me to marry you and take over a law firm? I’m a football player, not a lawyer!

And I can’t just get married, I just turned eighteen this summer!”

“Happy Birthday,” I say meekly. This is not going well.

“No. Just forget it. Thanks for the date, but this is not going to happen.”

Thomas throws his napkin down on the table and pulls out a few folded bills. He places them on the table, gives me one last look, and leaves.

I put down my fork and sigh. There’s no use crying. I’m sad, yeah, but this could happen a lot. Especially because I’m going to date every boy in the school.

I pull out my phone and begin to dial. Then, Mark walks up.

“nee-d a ride?” he says.

“Um, yes!” I stand and grab his arm. We walk into the rain and run to his smart car. “How’d you know I was here?” I asked.

He smiles. “Kim.” We laugh and he blasts the heat.

“Did you hear all that? I mean, our whole date?”

“No, just the last part. It sounded ugly.”

“It was.”

“I’m sorry.” He pauses. “If you’re going to date every guy in school, does that include me and Travis?”

I giggle. Travis is Mark’s g@y boyfriend. “No I promise I won’t try to turn either of you straight.

I wouldn’t want it that way. And besides, we nee-d some good hair stylists in this town! You can’t become a lawyer!”

We laugh. “Oh, no of course not. But I do want to be a-”

“A composer. I know, I know. Gosh, I do listen sometimes you know!”

We laugh and tell stories on the way home and I forget the fact that Kim is going to kill me for letting the perfect guy walk away because of one sli-p from my tongue.

When I get home, I take a hot bubble bath and sli-p into some comfortable sweats. I lay on my bed and reach un-der my pillow.

I pull out the hidden book and open it. Grabbing a pen from my nightstand, I look up Evans and cross off his name.

Yes, I do keep a list of the guys i have to date. And yes that list just became one guy shorter which means I’m one step closer to getting married.

TBC ??

Thomas is too young to get married ????
