✒Ella’s POV
✏✏✏✏✏✏
It all started when I was ten years old.

When I lost Dad, I knew life would never be the same again. He was my happiness, and when he died, I knew there was nothing left for me.
I cried so ha-rd till I had no more strength. We began a miserable life and things changed totally for us. The change which wasn’t for good.
Everyday, we lived in utter misery.
The day his death was announced, there was this pain that hit me and I realized it was way different from what I saw on TV. I felt like I had no reason to live. I was in no way prepared for the loss.
Mom who had lived in fear every blessed day, hvgged me ti-ghtly to her b©dy that day. Obviously she was scared, and I knew there was more to it.
Something that woke her up in the middle of the night. I felt she lived in fear, afraid of someone unknown to me.
It didn’t end there. Things bec@m£ very tough on us. Mom got in t©uçh with her friends, but none rendered any help.
No more three meals in a day, as Mom ha-rd ly put food on the table. If she had not agreed to be a full housewife, things wouldn’t have turned really bad for us that I had to st©p school because of money.

Some days later, Mom started working in a restaurant, and I knew uncle Willy, a man I considered strange, helped my Mom. I really do not know what was between him and Mom, but whatever it was, my mind told me things weren’t going well between the two.
But the day I met uncle Willy, he was very cool and nice.
Once Mom started working, she hired a teacher, Aunty Felicia, who taught me the works done in school. Throu-gh her, I learned a lot.
Just like every other day, I left Aunty Felicia’s place and went home. But as I was about to walked in throu-gh the gate, I saw uncle Willy ran out of the house, and yelled at himself. It baffled me, because he looked very angry. I wondered if he had fought with Mom, but what I saw brou-ght a fear to my heart. Blood! His hands were stained with blood.
Many thoughts pla-yed in my head and the only question I kept asking myself was. ” What’s going
on?”
I heard him talked to someone on phone to help, before he climbe-d into his car and drove off.
I ran inside very quic-kly.

As I got to the entrance, I felt my whole b©dy went still. I was glued on my sp©t, sweat covered my forehead before my heart began racing. I wanted to scream, shout, but slowly, the tears welled up in my eyes fell.

I saw blood, but not only that.

“Mom,” I called out brokenly, and f0rç£d my shaky legs to move closer to her. I reached where my Mom lay, on the ground covered in her own blood. She gro-an ed in pain, and managed to smile at me, as if everything was alright.
I bent down close to her, and reached for her right hand, and I felt my b©dy trembled.
It was the ha-rd est thing I had to deal with.

“Ella!” I heard Mom managed to call me. I wanted to got up to find someone who could save her, but she held on to my hand ti-ghtly with all the strength in her.

.”Ella,” she called again. “You have to leave and go somewhere far away,” she said, and I immediately bur-st into tears.
“Mom, don’t say that. I won’t leave you,” I told her. I wasn’t re-ady to lose her too. But there was something Mom was scared of.

“No Ella. You have to leave…”

“No Mom!” I cut her off.

“Ella dear,” she called, and I stared at her pleading eyes. I looked away and took a look at her again. She gro-an ed in pain, and kept telling me to leave..
“Hurry…and pack your things,” she said slowly, and her eyes met mine. I saw a tear rolled down at the corner of her eye, before I turned away.
I got up, and walked slowly to my room, as I packed my things.
I walked out of the room again, and she was there, in pain and full of tears.

The tears I thought I could hold fell very quic-kly, and rolled down my face.

I held on to my small bag, and each step I took towards the door, made my heart beat ra-pidly.

I looked over at my Mom, ‘Juliana’, before I took the last step outside the house, without saving my Mom’s life.

✔Juliana_POV

✒Ten years ago

At eighteen, I was in a relationsh!pwith Willy, who was three years older than me.
As a christian, my parents were never in support of me d@t!ng.
“Face your studies and graduate before thinking of
d@t!ng.” Mom says all the time.
But when I met Willy, I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but I knew I felt something for him.
How Mom got to know about my relationsh!pwith Willy baffled me, because everything between willy and I was a secret.
Of course! Mom warned me about him, but I didn’t hesitate to tell her how wonderful Willy was. But still, her reply was,
“I don’t trust that Willy of a guy. Juliana be very careful,” she had said.

Willy and I d@t£d for few months before he suddenly changed. He st©pped picking my calls, and even refused to see me. Obviously, I knew he was avoiding me. For what reason anyway. I couldn’t remember when he told me we were done, because we never fought.

All my efforts to see him was pointless because he was never around whenever I went to his place.
A day I had never imagined was this unforgettable day.
I was up in my room trying to get some sleep when I heard a loud noise downstairs. I was scared that I could not move an inch from my be-d. I trembled with fear because the noise I heard that day wasn’t a plea-sant one.
“plea-se we will give you any amount.” I heard Mom offer, as she pleaded to those people who barged into our house.
I heard a man laughed coldly.

“Very good of you,” he praised Mom. “We don’t mind, but that won’t st©p me from carrying my as-signment.” His thick voice which sounded just like an elderly man said.
as-signment! What as-signment? I asked myself, shaking as if I had caught a cold for some days.

I jumped from the sudden vibr@tion before I realized it was my phone. How I forgot I had my phone there surprised me. The call ended before I reached for my phone. I was about calling the police for help, when the phone vibr@ted again. That time, it was an unexpected call. I caught a glimpse of my caller, and immediately I picked it up to ask for his as-sistance.
“Willy there is a-”
‘Stay where you are,” he cut me off in a quiet voice, which sounded firm.

“But Willy I nee-d your help,” I quic-kly said.

“Just do as I say,” he told me but I pressed on.

“No Willy, this is important.”

“Give that phone to me!” I heard an angry voice said loudly at Willy.

“Dad-” he tried to talk but the man cut him off.

“Shut up and give the phone to me!” The man shouted, his voice loud and clear, before it was disconnected.
I tried calling back his line, but it wasn’t going.

I quic-kly knelt down and began saying some prayers for my parents, but suddenly I heard three gun sh0ts fired downstairs. I sat still on the ground at the sound of the gun sh0t.

It can’t be! It can’t! I repeatedly told myself, and wept silently.
Immediately I heard their car drove off. I hit my kneel as I ran to the door of my room, opened it and went downstairs with full speed.

As I reached downstairs, I felt numb with shock.
A sudden cold covered me and I shivered.
Dad and Mom la-id lifeless on the floor. Slowly, tears of anger fell from my eyes.
It was them! Those bastards did it! They killed my
parents!

I stood where I was, and my whole b©dy trembled with fear. Slowly I walked to them. My heart beat very fast as I fell to the cold ground in tears, and crawled to their b©dy.
How can those people be so cruel. Killed my parents after taking the money Mom offered them. Just what I heard from the man, they c@m£ to our house to carry an as-signment.
“Juliana.” I suddenly heard Mom’s low voice called, and I realized she was still breathing, but she wanted to say something, because her weak eyes stared at me.
“You have to leave Juliana, you’re not safe here. Those people might come back for you.”
she said, and gro-an ed in pain.
I felt worse as she gro-an ed and wept. I wanted Mom to save her strength, so I didn’t say a word.
“Let’s get you to the hospital.” I finally managed to say throu-gh my cracked voice.
But Mom refused. “No Juliana. Leave before it’s too late plea-se.” She pleaded, but it all fell on my deaf ears, as I struggled to pu-ll her up.

“I’m safe Mom. It is you who nee-ds to get treatment.” I cried out, pu-lling her up.
I was still trying to pu-ll her up, when I realized she was no longer breathing. I didn’t believe that at first, as I tapped her severally.
“Mom!” I shouted, and screamed out her name, but it was pointless.

My heart began racing again in fear. I brushed the tears that clung to my eyes to see clearly.

“Mom!” I screamed out, hoping she could hear me.
Tears rolled down my face as myl-ips pressed together, when I realized Mom had gone too.

“No. No. No. Nooooo…..”

I chanted and screamed out loudly, as more tears streamed down. I felt like someone just stabbe-d me in my stomach. I held onto myself and wept loudly.

After I was done crying, I took my phone to call uncle, my Dad’s younger brother, but his line was switched off.
I tried his second line, but it wasn’t going too. I stood up, not knowing who to talk to. I wiped away the small tears that dropped from my eyes. Willy c@m£ to my mind, and I thought Willy could help. Not only because of that, but I was curious to know why he called after many weeks of avoiding me. And why he told me to stay where I was, exactly when the people were in our house.

As I got to his place, I walked inside his compound, since I found the gate opened. I walked towards his ap@rtment, but it was locked. I turned to leave when I heard voices.
Quietly, I walked towards the window where the voices were coming from, and I could hear the voices clearly.
“What did you tell her?” I heard the same voice that spoke harshly to Willy on phone, when he called. It was the man he called Dad.
I moved closely to the window, as I heard him continued.
“You’ve fallen that girl right?” He asked. “Willy, how could you be so stupid! You shouldn’t have gotten involved with her.”
“And your plan is to kill her when you knew I was in love with the girl!” Willy said furiously to his Dad.

“Love my foot!” His Dad snapped back. “Don’t be silly! It’s her way of getting back at you. Besides, I don’t expect you to fall for that silly girl. How come?” His Dad sounded annoyingly.

“Drop it Dad!” Willy’s voice was stern. “That is my business!” He said.

You bastard! I muttered to myself. How could he say he loves me after his Dad killed my parents. Tears almost fell from my eyes, but I sh0t it back as I listened to their conversation.
“Willy cool it!” I heard his Dad’s voice, followed by a little laugh that sounded cold, and I knew the man was dangerous, without anyone telling me.
“If you haven’t forgot,” his Dad continued, “she’s also p@rt of my as-signment, and you know I would finish that soon,” he said grimly.

“What!” I almost choked out.

“You better not make a sound or you’re dead if caught.” A voice behind me startled me where I stood listening to Willy and his Dad’s conversation.

My heart almost jumped out of my throat, as I turned to find the voice owner. There stood Angela, Willy’s younger sister who was same age as me, glared directly at me.

“Don’t be surprised! Willy is no saint. You must have heard their conversation knowing your life is not safe,” she said.
I just stared at her perplexedly, wondering how many people knew about my parents death.

“Now leave!” Angela ordered, and brou-ght her face close to mine. “One minute in this vicinity, the vicious Adams, my father, who has never been defeated won’t think twice before killing you!” She sneered, and glared at me with her two eyes.
“And,” she paused. “If I were you, I wouldn’t dare involve the police. But if you wish to join them too soon, go ahead. But know this,” she walked closer to me, standing shoulder to shoulder with me. “You won’t live to see the end,” she said, ignoring my horrified expression.

I was dumbfounded, and immediately, tears ran down my face, and all I could do was nod my head.
It took me two minutes before I found my feet and took to my heels.

Who would have thought my life could become a movie
