EPISODE 20

“Babe you’re not pla-ying nice, I said I’m sorry. I was busy all day, I’d never intentionally ignore your calls or text, neither will I choose not to call you” Jake said with a hurt tone. He knew she was angry but she was going too far. He un-derstood she missed him and he missed her too. Like hell he misses her, but she shouldn’t say things like that.

What does she mean by she was on a date with a guy and he was disturbing her? Why would she say that to him?

Jade kept quiet when she heard him, from the sound of his voice she could tell she had hurt him. She shouldn’t have said that. She was quite aware of Jake’s possessiveness towards her, and saying something like that to him wasn’t cool.

She regretted saying that, it wasn’t intentional.

“I’m sorry” She apologized with a small voice, knowing she had done wrong by telling him to call back since she was busy with some other guy. “I just missed you, I’m truly sorry” Her voice was calm and gentle, showing how sincere she was with her apology.

It seems she was missing more than she thought she would and it was making her sad. And to think it was only the first day. She wondered how the forthcoming days would be like for her, for them.

“It’s fine, I miss you too but please don’t say that again,” He told her.

“I won’t” She @$$ured him. “I’m sorry” she apologized again.

“It’s okay”

“So how was your day?” She asked.

“My day was good” He replied.

“Just good?” She asked with uncertainty. She didn’t think it was just ‘good’, listening to his voice now she could se-nse the tiredness in it, and it made her regret the childish actions she had just displa-yed seconds ago.

“Sweetheart it was okay. I didn’t do much at the office. The virus is been created, and I have the other fronts covered. So I didn’t do much and I’m not stressed” He tried to re@$$ure her.

“You sure?”

“Very sure. Let’s not talk about me, tell me all about your day” Jake tried to divert the conversation from himself to her. His girlfriend was one hell of an intelligent girl and having their conversation focused on him and his day, he might end up revealing something about the will to her and that would mean more horrible days of not seeing her. He didn’t want that.

“My day was great, you won’t believe what happened today,” Jade said in an eager and excited tone. Jake smiled when he heard her sound that way.

“Tell me,” He said smilingly, urging her to go ahead.

“I’m pitching the prese-ntation for xenox next big game to the board tomorrow,” She told him with a happy smile on her face.

“Really? That’s great. My girlfriend is making waves” He praised.

“Of course. She’s a genius and a rare specie. You’re lucky to have her” She proudly declared.

“I sure I’m. But babe, when did you become a narcissist?” Jake asked in a surprised tone.

“Since I started dating one”

“Are you calling me a narcissist?” He couldn’t believe she just called him a narcissist. Why was she blaming him for her sudden narcissism?

“You’re sounding as if I’m lying. I’m just stating a fact” Jade told him.

Jake scoffed incredulously. Only his girlfriend could say something like this.

“Fine, I agree. I’m a narcissist and I’ve influenced you greatly” He said sarcastically, left with no choice but to accept her crazy logic.

“Of course” She nodded happily. Happy that she has made him admit to the fact that he was a narcissist.

“So if you have a prese-ntation why are you at the Karaoke? You should be at home preparing”

“Your smart honey bunny has it all covered, no nee-d to sweat” She was feeling cheeky. Jake was once again surprised at the sudden behavior of his girlfriend. He dare not say anything before she accuses him of influencing her again. Poor him.

“Yeah, I’m sure she has,” He said with sarcasm.

“Jake?” Jade called in a low tone.

“Hmm”

“I miss you,” She said in a low and gentle voice. Jake went silent for a while before saying, “I miss you too.”

“Do you want me to come?” He suddenly asked. He badly wanted to see her, but he wanted the idea to come from her. She had made him promise her to keep his distance till the issues at the office were rectified, so he’ll let her make the decision.

A minute of silence elap-sed without her response. She was in a dilemma. Seeing him was what she longed for but…..

“No” She reluctantly said. That wasn’t the answer she wanted to give but she knew she had to. He nee-ded the time to himself to handle things properly and have whatever little rest he could get, rather than coming to spend time with her.

Jake sighed when she said ‘no’. Somewhere in his heart, he was hoping she’d say yes, and he’ll rush over in a heartbeat.

“Okay,” He said slightly disappointed, but he didn’t want to show it. “Who are you at the karaoke with?” Jake tried changing the topic to liven up the awkward atmosphere.

“Lair and Amy”

“Hmm that guy, I don’t like him” Jake gruffed.

“Why?” Jade was surprised. She didn’t know he disliked Lair.

“He knew you before me and he gets to spend time with you now while I don’t” He hissed in annoyance. Jade burst out in laughter.

“You’re jealous of him? I can’t believe you” She laughed mockingly.

“So what if I am”

“Oh boy, stop acting like a baby. You shouldn’t be jealous of Lair, he’s a great friend”

“Whatever” Jake sneered at her.

They both talked for a while before reluctantly saying their goodbyes and good night, with Jake promising to keep his phone handy and call always remember to call her.

Jade sighed wearily before going back to the room to join her friends.

“Took you long enough,” Lair said as she walked in.

“Leave my baby girl alone, she was talking to her man. You should go find yourself a girlfriend and leave her be” Amy attacked him. She won’t let him bully her baby girl. Lair glared and hissed before munching on the chips which they had ordered.

Amy turned to Jade and asked, “How is he? I guess the issues at work are affecting you guys right?”

“Not really, we’ll live. Can’t wait for this to be over”

“So you can have him all to yourself right?” Lair wriggled a brow at her with a suggestive smile.

“Lair!”

“You’re just too lewd”

Jade and Amy said at the same time, making him smile sheepishly.

“Stupid fellow” Amy cussed.

“Hey I’m still your elder brother” Lair snapped in a menacing tone.

“Yeah yeah, elder brother my @$$” Amy clucked at him. Lair was about to pounce on her when Jade stepped in to save the situation before they start their endless bickering. She didn’t want that.

“Lair have you told Amy about your new job?” She said trying to distract them.

“What new job?” Amy asked confusedly. “You’ve got a new job?” Her eyes lit up with excitement.

“Yes, I did” He answered.

“That’s great news” Amy cheered. “That was quick, what hospital is it?” She curiously inquired.

“Oasis Medical center”

“Is that the like the biggest hospital in the country?” Amy asked.

“Yeah, and I heard someone’s boyfriend is a benefactor there” He told them.

“Who, Jake?” Jade asked when she saw how he was looking at her.

“No, me” He hissed sarcastically.

Meanwhile in another pa-rt of the city, a tall fair guy was seated in the shadows of his very dark room as he stared at the pitch start sky, with his phone pressed against his ear while he made a call.

“Why are you not here?” An angry voice demanded over the phone. It was Hillary’s voice.

“Calm down momma, I’m busy”

“With what?” She demanded angrily.

“Everything is already as per your instructions, but you should know I have my plans too” He explained to the furious woman.

“But you’re not supposed to leave till I’m done with you” She drawled.

“I’ll be back soon, just have to finish up something from my end,” He said in a slow and calm voice.

“You better be!” She hissed before hanging up the call.

“I don’t like you being with her. Why does she order you around like you’re one of her pla-ything?” Another voice said from inside the room.

“You don’t have to be jealous. Did you give her the invite?” He asked as he strolled closer to where the other man sat.

“Yes”

“Good” He nodded.

“You’re not going to do anything to her right? She had no hand in this”

“I know, but it doesn’t mean those who did would go unscathed. It’s just sad that she’s @$$ociated to such people. Don’t worry I’ll be nice” The man said before chu-gging down the drink down his throat.

He was so close to getting what he wants.. It was only a matter of time.
________

“You’re seriously going to see him aren’t you?” Blake asked in disbelief when Jake told him who he was going to see.

“Yes, I am” Jake replied as he put on his Jacket.

“You’re not going to hurt him right?” Blake asked suspiciously. He wasn’t sure Jake was simply going to talk with the person he was going to see. He was fully aware of how Jake’s hatred ran de-ep for him.

Jake who was about to sli-p on his wristwatch paused when he heard Blake’s question. He turned to look at him with cold eyes, “If you’re asking if I’m going to kill him, then the answer is not yet” His voice was cold and Blake could feel it and it made him shudder.

“Okay fine. Just talk to him. You know how you get when you lose your temper, I won’t be there to stop you like the last time”

Jake eyed him and sighed. “You make it sound like I’m an uncultured man”

“Well, my brother you are. You’re disastrous when you’re angry” Blake pointed out just in case he had forgotten.

“Shut up, tell me about the project I @$$igned to you. How is it coming along? Do you nee-d any help?” Jake asked in a more serious tone.

“No, I got it all covered. Should be ready by the end of the day. You can do the test run later at the office” Blake told him, while Jake nodded.

“Okay, then we’ll meet at the office,” Jake said as he began to stroll out of the room, leaving Blake behind.

“Wait” Blake called to stop him. Jake halted and turned to look at him with a questioning gaze.

“Is there any reason why you’re meeting Kyle?” Blake curiously inquired. He still didn’t know the reason behind Jake’s sudden decision to see the man he hated the most, especially when they had lived together for more than a decade but had still been able to despise him that much. Not that he wasn’t angry at Kyle, but he felt Jake’s was worse.

“You’ll find out later. Just focus on your work, and we’ll talk much later” Jake said before walking out of the room. He stopped by his grandfather’s room to check up on him and also gave a sound warning to the butler before leaving.

He remembered to call his possessive girlfriend and wish her good luck on her prese-ntation before he forgets and gets a breakup text later in the evening. That girl was driving him crazy but in a positive way. Talking to her and being with her makes him feel better and all his troubles disappear. He just wanted all this to be over and be with her as soon as possible. He could imagine life with her every day. Waking up to see her beautiful face by his side and ki-ssing her goodnight before going to be-d. His li-ps curved upwards when he thought about that.

Soon Jake parked in front of a private restaurant somewhere in the city. He sauntered into the restaurant and was ushered into one of the private rooms.

Jake wasn’t surprised when he met Kyle already sitting in the room waiting for him. Jake stopped at the door when his eyes met with Kyle, he could feel his mood slowly turn sour just by looking at him.

Kyle sprang up to his feet the moment Jake walked into the room. He stood fixated with nothing to say. He had at a point thought Jake would change his mind, but he was really here. He was surprised when he got a message from Jake’s secretary yesterday asking him to meet him there. He couldn’t express the immense joy as well as the anxiety that he felt when Patrick told him about the meet.

To be sincere he had missed his brothers, though they might not be related by blood they had lived un-der the same roof for years and he had lived and loved them like his own just as much as they did.

After his last encounter with Jake at the club when he had beaten him up, he decided to stay away till he cools off and maybe try again. After all, he had committed a great sin against the family.

Jake sighed out loud and had almost turned around to leave when he saw Kyle’s face. Seeing him now, he suddenly had the urge of killing him. Jake hissed and walked into the room. He unbu-ttoned his suit bu-tton and sat down on the seat opposite Kyle.

“I’m not here to hear you apologize or do something related to that, because if you do I might kill you. I just want to hear what happened the week and the day father died” Jake went straight to the point.

Kyle didn’t know how he should feel after hearing Jake say that. He had wished Jake might have wanted to see him and talk things over, but who was he deceiving. Jake would never forgive him, no one would. What happened was unforgivable.

“What do you want to know?” Kyle asked as he took his seat, and sat directly opposite him.

“Everything, most especially his health, and who he met with,” Jake said specifically.

Kyle kept quiet for a while as he thought about the week and most importantly the day Henry died. Those are were the days he has been unable to forget.

After a while, he started talking. “Nothing special happened on the week of his death, that week was supposed to be his week for outstation inspection, and we had it scheduled as usual. He went about his usual stuff, nothing out of the ordinary” Kyle narrated.

“Nothing out of the ordinary?” Jake asked inquisitively.

“No nothing. We went for the outstation inspection like we were supposed to”

“What about his health? Was there anything suspicious? Did he look disoriented? Was he out of it?” Jake desperately asked. Kyle looked at Jake with much intent. He didn’t know why he was been asked such questions but he could tell something was up. But anyway he dare not ask, less he wants Jake to go into his angry mode.

“No, he wasn’t…..wait” Kyle paused when he suddenly remembered something.

“What?” Jake asked eagerly, his bo-dy tensed up and his eyes anxiously boring a hole into Kyle’s head.

“Did you say disoriented?” Kyle asked.

“Yes”

“There was this one time he had acted weird,” Kyle said suspiciously. Now that he remembered he had always wondered why things had happened the way they did.

“What do you mean? What day was that?” Jake’s impatience was gradually growing, his brows narrowed closely.

“On the day he died”
