? Prologue ?

?Charlotte?

I watched the makeup artist apply li-pstick on my li-ps. I’ve been used to applying make-up on my own. Well, what could I say, it was my wedding.

I’ve dreamt of this day for a long time. Noah and I had come far enough and we were ready to tie the knot to be together forever. I couldn’t help the smile that had speed across my face. I knew the makeup artist would have been frustrated from all my smiles.

The door knob turned, revealing my sweaty best friend as she ran into the room. I rolled my eyes at her. She always have to be late to everything. I was glad she came at least an hour early before my wedding.

“Sorry, I had to run a few errands for granny. What’s up?” Zoey talked sharply, running her hands throu-ghher dry, dirty blonde hair.

“First of, you need to shower. You can’t look off at my wedding, no, you have to look good. Don’t ruin my wedding, Zoey.” I said frustratedly. I was already scared we might ruin the wedding. I’ve dreamt of that day for a long time. Ruining it will hunt me forever.

“Chill, Char. We still have an hour.” She said throwing her bag on the couch beside her.

I slightly pushed the make up artist to the side and turned to Zoey, obviously angry. “An hour is too small to get dressed up and have your makeover and hairdo done.” I spat at her.

She raised her hands above her head, surrendering. “You still have to chill. Besides, I ain’t the only one late.” She didn’t wait for me to reply before she ran into the bathroom for a shower.

The door opened again, revealing my mum, already claded in her emerald green dress. She looked so young, beautiful. Smiles were evident on her face. I couldn’t be more happy seeing her all happy.

Ever since dad left, mum haven’t had a good laughter. She was always moody. She faked laughter so I wouldn’t have to worry about her. I had always reminded her that dad chose to leave because he didn’t know the importance of a good woman. I heard he’s out with some b.itch about my age. The f.ucking b.astard!

“Mama.” I stood up to hug her. I gave the make up artist an apologetic look. She only smiled and took a seat. “You look so beautiful in your dress.”

Mum smiled happily and gave me a quick ki-ss on my cheeks. “You don’t look bad either.”

I chuckled softly. “I’m not even dressed yet.”

“I know my baby will look so beautiful in her dress. Noah will be blown away.”

Definitely. He had always been thrown away by my beauty everytime we went on a date.

“Yeah. I have to get my make up done quickly so we don’t have to be late to church.” I gave her a quick ki-ss and walked back to my chair for the make up artist to continue doing her magic.

“Where’s Zoey?”

“In the bathroom. She’s late.” She had always been. It’s her signature—To be always late.

Once, Zoey had a date, she went to where she was supposed to hang out with the guy two hours late. The guy never called till date. How she does it is still a mystery to me.

“There still a little time. I saw the other girls getting dressed up in the other rooms. They looked ready.” Mum said taking a seat on the couch, Zoey had flung her bag.

“Zoey always have to be late.”

Zoey walked out of the bathroom, water dripping out of her body and down to the floor. She had a towel wrapped around her ch-est. I can’t help but admit that Zoey is really a beautiful girl. Her short blonde hair was plastered on her face and ne-ck. She ran her hand throu-ghit, like she was in the movies. Dramatic.

“Hey Mrs. Sophia.” Zoey ki-ssed my mother’s cheeks. She had always been fond of my mother. They always hung out and talked regularly. They’re like sister’s.

“You’re late.” My mother said in a warning tone.

“Had to run few errands for granny. My car broke down on the way so I had to run over here. Charlotte is so ungrateful to see what I’ve throu-ghfor her to get the perfect wedding.” She flung her towel to the ground and reached for a robe. I rolled my eyes at her. She did great this past months, but being almost late on my wedding day is a big no no.

“She lying.” I said quickly. I stood up from the chair and moved over to get my wedding dress.

“I ain’t lying.”

“Let’s get me dressed up now, shall we?”

I was getting nervous as I got ready to walk down the aisle to finally get married to the man of my dreams.

My mum smiled behind me. She squ-eezed my hands softly and placed a quick ki-ss on the back of my palm.

“Ready?” I heard a masculine voice said behind us. I turned around to look who had it. It better not be who I was thinking.

Dad?

I gave my mum a questioning look. She threw her face away, as if knowing I was finding answers to why my dad who abandoned me, was doing at my wedding. “What are you doing here?” I half yelled, gaining the attention of everyone.

My dad smiled at me and moved closer to me. I stepped back, almost stepping on my dress. “Come on, Char, dad is here to walk you down the aisle.”

Walk me down the aisle? Who the hell does he think he is to show up at my wedding invited, and saying trash about walking me down the aisle? I turned to my mum. “Mum? What is he talking about? We talked about this, you’re walking me down the aisle, not him.”

She held unto my hands tightly. I could see she was trying to hold back her tears. “He’s here to walk you down the aisle, I invited him to.”

“We talked about this, mum.”

“I want you to have the best wedding like every other girl. It’s rare to see mother’s walking their daughters down the aisle.”

I knew it was rude to say my mum acted stupidly, but I just had to. She was the least person I expected to act that way. We talked about everything. She was so excited to walk me down the aisle. How pathetic I was to think she’d totally buy that idea.

“I don’t care mum. This man ain’t my father. You’re walking me down the aisle or I ain’t getting married no more.” I folded my arms und-er my bre-ast . Zoey placed her hands on my back and rubbed it slowly.

“Just let him do it.” She whispered to me.

Before I could reply, Noah’s mum pushed the door open. “Ready guys? We’ll be down in a minute.” She flashed me a friendly smile. I smiled back, but tightly.

I chuck my hands und-er dad’s awaiting arm after a rethink.

“It’s just for some seconds.” I whispered to myself and wore my smile.

I was getting married, finally.

The moment I saw Noah, my heart leaped with joy. He looked so hot in a white tuxedo that clinged to his big body. He ain’t smiling but I know his heart is almost bursting open by now.

I couldn’t stop the smile on my face as I walked over to Noah who still isn’t smiling. His face was crumpled up. He looked like he wasn’t happy to see me. I ignored the way my heart beat continuously.

My dad dropped me at the alter and walked back to his seat. I stand there, looking directly at the man I was about to get married to. His eyes scanned my body in distaste.

Something was definitely wrong with, Noah. He’d never look at me that way, like he was irritated by my appearance.

I’ve totally blocked whatever the priest was saying out of my head. My heart was racing. Wasn’t he happy that we are finally getting married?

“Are you okay?” I whispered to him. He nodded and turn to look at the priest.

“Miss Charlotte Hudson, do you take Mr Noah Benjamin, as your lovely wedded husband?” The priest asked.

I smiled widely, looking at Noah. “Yes I do.” I said with so much joy.

The priest turned to Noah. “Mr Noah Benjamin, do you take Miss Charlotte Hudson, as your lovely wedded wife?”

Noah body stiffened. He turned his gaze to everyone in the church. They were all staring back at him, as if telling him to say yes already.

Why was he taking so long? I hated how my heart squ-eezed. He shouldn’t hesitate to say yes.

I followed his eyes until they land on a young lady sitting among the crowd. She was staring back at him with black, bold eyes.

Noah, looked back at me and began to shake his head sideways. “No, I don’t.”

A loud gasp escaped in the crowd. I couldn’t open my mouth to speak. My to tongue was tied. Foam filled my throat, and tears pricked my eyes.

Noah, just said NO. It was a slap on my face. My heart wouldn’t stop beating fast.

Before I could get myself to talk, I could see him walking over to the lady. He pulled her up and gave her a ki-ss on her li-ps. My heart sank.

He was leaving me right on the alter, to go away with some girl. What happened to being together forever. I felt my heart slit. It felt like someone stabbed me in the ch-est.

I could see guests with the corner of my eyes recording the whole drama. I couldn’t move, talk or comprehend everything happening in front of my eyes. Why couldn’t I do a thing? I was stuck to my position. I tried so ha-rd to think it was all a dream, but no, it was happening right on my face.

Some girls in the crowd were already smiling victoriously at the embarra-ssment Noah, had put me throu-gh. It was so embarra-ssing and heartbreaking. I never expected he’d do such to me, ever. A few months ago, we were so excited to get married already. We already wrote down names that we’d give to our children. We had our lives planned out already. How he’s leaving all our plans behind to be with some unknown girl kept baffling me. He threw everything we worked for away. He threw me away.

A hand grabbed me by the shoulder and pulled away. “Let’s get out of here.”

As I ran, I allowed the tears that had blurred my vision, fall down my cheeks like a waterfall.
