Chinedu mother got back home and leaned on her door and felt like crying,
“What has Agnes done? If I react now will anything go wrong? Won’t that child harm my son? She asked herself and went to her calabash looking at it and angrily kicked it.
“It was not time for her delivery I had my plans and he ruined it! She shouted and sat worriedly on the be-d.
Ife was already asleep and they decided to sit at the backyard talking and there was no one in the room with him.
The woman who helped Agnes in giving birth got into the bathroom to take her bath, just when there was soap in her eyes, she felt a bit on her hand and struggled to open her eyes but saw a snake just on top of the bamboo nodding at her.
She let a scream and p@$$ed out when she saw her children running to her. Agnes and her aunty heard noises coming out from the compound and Chinedu was the one who decided to go check it out.
Being good with herbs taught well by his mother, he dived into the bush after tying the sp-ot to go get herbs for the bite but the noise increa-sed the more.
He ran out with leaves in his hand confused to see the woman dead on the ground where they left her,
“I don’t un-derstand, what happened? He asked.
“She’s dead, one replied.
“She’s dead how? What kind of snake bite her nau just when we applied something that can stop the poison while I bring more herbs to completely heal her and she’s dead how? Chinedu asked not believing his eyes.
“We can’t even see any snake, there’s no snake because I was just at the backyard when I heard her screamed and there was no snake. No we wont take this, what is this na! Her son shouted and Chinedu felt so bad and let go of the herbs he picked.
Before Chinedu could reach the compound, Agnes and Maureen had already heard the news.
Agnes began to cry on her husband,
“She was a good woman, what would I have done if she didn’t come out at that time to help me out? Why is this world so bad? she was just with us, she held Ife few hours ago and now this? The good keeps dying and the bad remains why dear why?, Agnes lamented.
“Dear its okay this is not good for you take it easy, Chinedu said making her to sit down.
“I saw them carrying her out, where are they going to? Maureen asked.
“To make findings, I am just tired with all this their fruitless findings that makes no se-nse. What did they get when Chinwe died and her mother paralyzed? Anyway let them go and come back, Chinedu replied.
“For this one I support them, they really have to find out. Oh what a good woman just like that she’s dead, what did she do? Maureen sadly asked and Ife began to cry.
Agnes ran in to meet him and he smiled at her and she couldn’t help but smile back and Chinedu walked in,
“Your son is smiling o, I don’t know what is making him smile sef, she said and Chinedu pla-yfully tou-ched his cheek.
“Your son saw that you were sad and he had to cheer you up. Uhmmm so you made momma smile, Chinedu said pla-ying with him and he smiled the more as they laughed.
After a month, Chinedu Mother didn’t return to her son place after she left. Chinedu angrily stormed into her place one morning shouting her head out why she should abandon her son and her grandchild,
‘Is this not what you wanted? Is this not what you didn’t allow me to drink water in peace? You shook my wife and made life very unbearable for her, finally you have your grand son and its just once you’ve seen him, what kind of a mother are you? What if aunty Maureen is not there to help us out yet I have an agile mother who suddenly don’t care anymore. You can hate my wife, but I won’t take it if you transfer it to my son, this is when you will see my anger mama live and direct! Chinedu shouted and stormed out of her house while she quietly looked at him saying nothing.
She breathed out and looked into her calabash and saw her powers were dwindling. The birth of this boy has destroyed everything for her and she regretted she ever looked him in the face and told him the battle has just begun,
‘What will I do now? She weakly asked herself ru-b-bing her forehead as she felt sick.
She strolled down to her old friend and entered the hut without bothering to knock and breathed out when she didn’t see anybo-dy,
“Its me, I just want to talk, She said to the empty air.
“I can see that, a quiet voice said and appeared sitting on the floor and suddenly began to laugh at her.
“I know you will come, my powerful friend is looking sick what is it? He asked and she heaved shaking her head.
“I am finished, I have never been this confused my whole life, she replied sitting down.
“Everyone who goes near the boy is automatically finished. Where on earth did your daughter in-law carry such a boy? That’s a threat to this village and he should not be allowed to get to three years else it will be deadly. Do you know who your son has as a son? You’re very lucky to survive him, the man said with a stern face and she nodded.
“What has that boy not done to me? If not I am the iroko he would have felled me, she said hitting her che-st and he smiled.
“But you’re already left with one root and its shaking, don’t try to harm him again, just be his friend, the man said and she looked at him.
“Be who friend? Thats not possible after what he has done? I can’t accept defeat! She shouted.
“You don’t know the power of being friends with someone, who knows you can find out its secret and mission here, and What do you think you can do when this is all your fault. If you had let the children in the woman belly live she wouldn’t have brou-ght such trouble on this village, the boy won’t let you live knowing who you are, why not just alliance with him, make him feel safe and it is finished, the man said.
“Do you know what you’re saying? That boy can kill my son! She shouted.
“Its not like your sons has not died before or are you jealous it won’t be in your hand? The man asked and she angrily looked at him.
“Don’t tell me I wasted my time to come here, she said.
“Obviously you just did. You abandoned me for good ten years and today you’ve surfaced asking me for help? In case you don’t know, I am looking for a way to be in contact with that boy that will make me more powerful, he said and she smi-rked and smiled.
“You said he has to be stopped before he gets to three yet you want to be his subject huh? She asked.
“They say if you can’t beat them you join them, he replied.
“If you really think he will help your kind then you’re stupid, he will destroy you, he will destroy us and we have to corporate! She shouted.
“He will destroy you first and you want us to corporate for your own gain, I don’t have a problem with that spirit, don’t give me more trouble woman, He said.
“That is always your problem, you’re such a lazy man who prefers to hide in shadows doing nothing and thinking he will be saved there. Do you know who my grand son is? He will definitely fish you out, all of you, She angrily said getting up and he smiled.
“That will be when he is done with you I repeat, I have told you to give up and you’re stubborn. Your stubbornness will cost your life and in case you’re not aware, spirits are aware about that boy and has given way for him. Anyone who tries to contend with him just to dominate is in trouble, don’t say I didn’t warn you, The man said and disappeared and Chinedu mother hissed and left the house and slowly entered her son compound.
She saw yams, c@$$ava etc outside the door and Agnes came out immediately and was surprised to see her.
“Oh mama you came? Welcome, Agnes happily said.
“Where’s my son? She asked ignoring her.
“He went to the farm, will you come in or should I bring a chair outside? Agnes asked and her eyes were on the things outside.
“Did he just harvest this? She asked.
“Oh no, its from the villagers for Ife. Anytime I have a visitor they bring gifts, it has happen this way for like 2 weeks now that we don’t know where to sto-re them anymore, Agnes replied smiling.
“Get me a chair, she said and Agnes went in to bring a chair for her.
“So its true? Foolish villagers thinking to be so wise, she said in her heart and Agnes came out with a chair for her and she sat down.
“Mama should I bring you food? You know its your……… “Who are you pretending to woman? I didn’t come here to hear all this mama mama talk okay, just leave me alone I came to see my son and not you, She cuts in.
“What about your grandson? Will you also hate him because am his mother? Mama just tell me what I did to you and I’ll apologize, I am just sick and tired of this hatred, Agnes said and she stood up facing her.
“You want me to like you? Then take that thing in that house you call a son and leave my son life for good, just go away! She shouted and Agnes quietly entered the house leaving her outside to wait for Chinedu. She hissed and sat down so frustrated and heard a hissing sound at the side of the compound and she stood up from where she sat to the direction and saw the snake,
“So what do you want? Can’t a grandmother come to visit her grandson again? She asked.
“Your visit would have been very welcomed if you came in peace, you are very fortunate to have that title as my grandmother, that is resisting me you know, the snake replied.
“Just know this, I won’t let you win, I am your number one big threat, she sternly said.
“What will you do? exp-ose me? You know I have an advantage here and that is your son, one wrong move and he will go down, the snake said and she sniffed.
“Chinedu is a good father for an animal like you, you don’t deserve any of this, she said between her teeth.
“No one fathers me, and i am just comforting their lonely lives. Come to think of it, he has been a good son to you also but what did you do? The snake asked and she swallowed touching her forehead.
“You’ll be exp-osed soon I know that, you won’t live for long, she said.
“Why are you in a hurry then? Look around you I am already having subjects, soon you won’t be facing me but my subjects and I am so sorry for you, the snake said and disappeared and her mouth opened in shock.
She heard Ife crying inside and felt like storming in there to strangle him. Everything became clear that the snake was not joking and maybe she should take the advice of her friend to become friends with him and know his mission just to protect her son from him, the spirit does not care about them but the purpose he was born for.
“Mama? She heard her son voice behind and she turned to him. Tears swelled in her eyes and she quickly cleaned it and sniffed,
“Why are you standing here? Why are you crying? He asked touching her
“I am so ashamed of myself Chinedu, I am trying ha-rd to get this anger from my che-st please forgive me, she cried and Chinedu heaved.
“Mama its okay, just give Agnes a chance she’s a good woman, he said.
“I’ll try, I’ll try, she said.
“Don’t try mama you have to do this for your grand son, don’t cry mama let’s go in, he said cleaning her tears and held her in.
They met Agnes bathing Ife and Agnes didn’t say a word to her,
“Dear please let her bath Ife, Chinedu said to her and Ife smiled.
“No let her finish with it, His mother came in immediately.
“But mama……. “I’m already done with him, Agnes said taking Ife from the water and handed him to her which she sluggishly took him from Agnes.
“Where are his clothes? She asked and Agnes left to bring it and Chinedu smiled at her.
“Mama are you forgetting something? He asked as she sat down to clean him up.
“What? She asked.
“What’s today date? He asked back.
“Sorry there’s a lot on my head I can’t remember, she innocently replied.
“Ahh my mother is finally growing into old age o, but its my birthday nau, Chinedu said and She breathed out.
“I’m sorry, I remembered it last week and totally forgot. Happy birthday my son, may evil never see or locate you, anyone who tries to harm you may it backfire to the se-nder and may all their plans fail, she prayed and Ife looked at her…….
