I washed and cleaned myself up.

I shared the cake with everyone, and it was the jollof rice we ate before Mom finally cooked dinner. When sister Blessing saw Mercy, she was happy and welcome her well. I knew in my mind that Mercy was saying,

This aunty has come again.

Haha..

Me. Story for the gods

Her own will be how I ran back to Lagos.

We both went to the dinning table after we’ve consumed everything she brou-ght. I was not that hungry, so I decided to just take small out of the rice and beans mom cooked. I used my spoon to slice the fish ap@rt, eating quietly.
“Mercy, we are so happy to see you,” Dad’s voice silenced everyone talking on the table. “We are so happy to have you. You’re welcome, and I hope you’re alre-ady having fun.” Mercy bowed instead, eating her food. “Hope you c@m£ with your books?”

Gbagaun!! Gbagaun!!

I heard the bell

I saw her look

Haha…

Papa James for life.

I could hear Mercy’s heart beating.. Books for
where? Is at home.

Mercy and I exchanged look. She was calm, silent, and nod her head instead. I suppressed my smile. May be Dad wanted to ask if Mercy c@m£ with her chocolates?
Should I tell him he made a mistake?
“I was informed you want to take a nursing form?” Dad asked Mercy.
“Yes sir,” she finally opened her mouth.
“That’s good,” Dad said. “You should study together with Suzy then.”
What now?
I just knew I don’t have another father anywhere, except from my father in heaven who created me. If I should later find out the truth, I will run with my two legs, and join my two hands.
Suzy, you turn to dog niyen?
Haha… Noooo.
“Are you even listening?” A very ha-rd voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Suzy, Dad is talking to you.” Sister Blessing would definitely interfere.
“I don’t know what you’re thinking about?” That voice changed. It changed to that tone I never like to hear. He dropped his spoon. “I’m telling you how you will prepare for your coming GCE.”

Gbagaun!!

Someb©dy wake me up.

The two eyes I raised wasn’t nice at all.

Did that man just say GCE exams?

“Your GCE exams is coming up soon,” he repeated, as if he knew I was asking him a question. “You will register immediately the form is out, and start tutorial clas-s as well. I won’t be hiring any teacher.”
So papa James, what’s the difference?
“And you also,” he turned to Mercy. “You will also join her to get prepared for your exams as well.”
“Yes sir,” Mercy bowed.
Immediately I was done eating, I signal to Mercy to pack her plates and join me in the kitchen. We washed, returned the plates, and said our goodnight. I knew Mom was aware of my sudden mood. And I was sure Dad knew my ‘goodnight’ was early for the day.
Mercy and I landed our small bu-tt on my be-d. I changed into my night go-wn, and also gave her one to change into.
“Angry?”
I turned to look at Mercy. “Not anymore. Dad is always like that.”
“I alre-ady knew he would ask about my books,” Mercy said.
“So you brou-ght your books!” I was surprised.
She laughed. “Surprise?” She said like it was funny. I hissed, and looked away. “You c@m£ with your books, yes or no?”
She laughed again. “Yes, I did ma. So my-”

“Your what?” I knew where she was driving at, so I quic-kly cut her off, but she was so persistent.

“Hmm…” She laughed. “Our boy-”

“Which boy?” I cut her off again, ma-king her bur-st into laughter.
Her teeth was showing. “Suzy are you okay like this?”
“It is you I should ask. You’ve been thinking about boy these days.”
She blu-shed. “I don’t even have a b©yfri£nd.”
“Neither do I.”
She shook her head. “Lieing is one of the things God hates.”

“So, are you a God?”

She flew out of the be-d laughing. “Suzy you will not kill me. What type of s£ntence is that? Are you a Jenifa?”

Both of us bur-st into laughter, mocking each other. That’s the fun I get to have whenever my cousin is around. We will gist, tell each other secrets, our toasters, and go ahead abusing them all. So, I knew I had no choice but tell Mercy what was going on.
“Okay.” I cleared my throat. “You know he’s not my b©yfri£ndright?”

“Yes, I do. Now hit the nail.”

I raised my eyebrow. Someone was acting impatient. “Okay Mercy. Do you know that guy you saw that day.”

“Yes. Victor Stephen. That’s his name right?”
I nodded. “I don’t know if it’s love, but I really like him.”
Mercy blu-shed. “Aww.. Suzy are you sure about this. It’s obvious the guy likes you, but are you in love with him.”
I quic-kly covered her mouth, blu-shing. “Don’t shout Mercy.”

“I won’t shout,” she said. “But do you think it’s love?”
My smile was gone. And I felt like crying, because my precious heart was hurt. I wish my heart had done is job of keeping me alive alone. But it went too far, putting me in love trouble. I squee-zed my face, and managed to smile. “Mercy I really don’t know because right now I hate him. But.. I still like him.. I really like him Mercy.” My tears c@m£.

Mercy’s smile dropped seeing my tears. “You really do like this guy Suzy. But you just made me hate him for ma-king you cry.”
I f0rç£d a smile. “Don’t hate him Mercy.” I found myself saying.
Mercy chuckled, ma-king me blu-shed. “Aww.. My cousin is in love. Don’t worry. He’s too cute for me to hate him.”
I blu-shed, and gave her my phone to re-ad what Victor s£nt me. Mercy was laughing, and blu-shing the whole time, murmuring..

“Aww”

“He’s so sweet.”

“This is cute.”

“Oh my God, he likes you.”

“This is so sweet.”

“He really likes you.”

“Aww… I’m in love with this guy alre-ady”

I couldn’t believe all what my cousin was saying. I went ahead and told her what Victor did that made me hate him now. To my surprise, all Mercy could do was hvg me. “I’m so happy for you Suzy.”
I pushed her away in surprise, unable to hide my confusion. “Didn’t you hear everything I just said. He ignored me, and we don’t even talk again.”

“But you still have your Sim?”

“I’ve flu-shed it inside the toilet.”

“You flu-shed what?” Mercy’s eyes wi-de-ned at my confession. And before I knew it, she was smiling, as a tear was about to roll down. “You really do like him to go that extent of flushing your Sim.” She hvgged me.

Gosh!

What was that?

“Believe me, he likes you.” Mercy said. “He will come back for you. He will. I want someone to make me smile like this. I really want a guy like Victor Stephen too. Does he have a brother?”
I sl@pped Mercy’s hand away. She doesn’t know what she was saying.

Brother ko, Brother ni!

I couldn’t help shaking my head. I might like Victor Stephen, but I couldn’t keep holding onto someone I don’t see anymore. He might be the guy that everyone wants, but I know what’s best for me. I don’t just want a guy that will make me smile, I want more. There is more to what a guy should do. I believe the heart might not forget it’s first love, but I know this same heart is capable of loving someone else again.

I might not be over Victor Stephen. But I’m done. I believe in the saying that…

Life goes on…

✒✒Ten year later✔

“Big aunty, big aunty.” I felt that small hand that loves to wra-p around me tapped me continuously. I turned to the other side of the be-d instead. I was so tired and really wish I was not disturbe-d.

“Aunty Suzy are we not going again?” She tapped me, refused to st©p. And this time, she hit me ha-rder. I had no choice but to get up, cause that little hand was hitting me so ha-rd . I f0rç£d myself up and checked the time. I wasn’t surprise, because she was always like that. “Love, it’s early. This is just 5:30am,” I told her hoping she would go back to be-d.

“But Aunty Suzy, before we get re-ady, before we eat, and dress, and-”

“It’s okay. Don’t worry,” I cut her off. “We will be on time okay. Come to be-d and join me.” I picked her from the ground beside me, and silently prayed she falls asleep. But no, my niece eye ba-lls were wi-de awake waiting for her big Aunty to get up and get re-ady for the p@rty.

The day I announced I was going to p@rty, Love squealed happily, and quic-kly told me she was going to follow me as always. Since that day, she never misses to mention how everything was going to me.

“Aunty Suzy, Mom have bought me a new dress.”

“See my new hair bow.”

“But help me tell Mom I nee-d new shoes too.”

All I could do was laugh, and promise her that her Mom would get it for her. Training a child is not an easy task at all. Even though I was not her Mom, when she starts her complaints, and begin to disturb, I become so tired and have no choice but to call on her mom to rescue.

Being a doctor is Hectic and stressful. I c@m£ late last night, and all I could do was un-hook my br@, and found my way to the be-d. I finished from McGill university, which is one of the t©p universities in Canada. I c@m£ back to Nigeria because Mom and Dad wanted me to. I really do not know why, but they insisted I come back to Nigeria to settle down. Telling me they want me to have my own family, and start raising my own kids.
When I c@m£ back, my Papa James was not getting any younger, but old. Just this year, Sister Blessing and I planned his 60th birthday. And as we were planning Dad’s own, Mom and I, including sister Blessing’s husband also planned sister Blessing’s 30th birthday. I couldn’t believe it, everyone was growing. I could see the joy of a mother throu-gh mom’s tears the day both Dad, and sis celebr@ted their birthday. Of course, everyone who saw me called me with my profession.

Our Doctor

Doctor Suzy you’re back

We thought you’re not coming back again

Doctor the Doctor.

While some tea-sed me, others prayed for me, and begin to ask me what drugs they can use for their ailments. As if that was not enough. Dad was no longer calling me by name. He was now calling me..

My Doctor.

Whenever he calls me that, I always found myself smiling. The name was sweet to hearing, and I would blus-h seeing him smile also. I will be sincere with anyone who would love to know about my papa. He’s so strict, but he is the best. I love Papa James so much. Each year in school till I finished from McGills, I always make the best student. Whenever I share it with Dad, he would be so thri-lled, and would pray for me.

On my graduation day, I expected what happened should come from Mom, but no, it was my Dad who bur-st into tears, as the school honoured me with a scholarsh!pfor my masters, and even offered me a job when I finished. Every girl would hvg her Mom. But that day, I cried on my Dad’s shoulder, thanking him for putting my priorities first, and ma-king me take my education so serious.

I love Papa James

I love my Daddy so much.

Dad showed her appreciation to Sister Blessing and I for the new car we got him. So did mom never expected the new sewing machines she always told me she nee-ded.
Dad and Mom spoiled Love that day. They were both happy around their grandchild. And joked with many things, whispering into my ear..

“My Doctor don’t waste anymore time.” Dad said,
ma-king me blu-shed.

“Aunty Suzy Grandma is re-ady for her duties.”

I laughed the whole time. It was really good to be home, and see my parents happy, and healthy.

“Big Aunty,” I heard that tiny voice of my little niece again. Since I’ve started staying with Sister Blessing, and her husband, their little girl never leaves her Big Aunty as Sister Blessing had told to call me.

“Yes dear,” I murmured, still feeling sleepy.

“Let’s go and bath now,” she turned to face me, and I quic-kly closed my eyes to avoid our eyes ma-king contact, knowing she would drag me down.
“Big Aunty is tired Love. When it is six, we will get up.”
“But Aunty Victoria said we should come early.” She reminded me.
“I’ve heard. Now sleep. I will wake you up when I’m re-ady.” I just said, knowing she won’t sleep.
The day Victoria and I met after I gave her the new number I was using on Facebook. She screamed happily. At first, she didn’t recognize me on time, because I was no longer that chubby girl. Stress had made me come down, including the exercise that Vanessa made me do twice in a week during our days in school. I grew more taller, and no longer as fat as before. We reconnected back, and I was able to get in t©uçh with Temi, and Debbie, except from Kunmi.

I tried Kunmi’s number most times but it was never going, until Victoria told me she was also out of the country. When I finally c@m£ back to Nigeria, I got a call from Victoria, and I couldn’t get enough.

“Suzy, I had S-x for the first time, and I’m pregnant.” She dropped it on me at once.

“What! S-x! Preg! You’re-”
She laughed. “I’m pregnant.”

“But I thought we were in this together to stay as v!rg!nuntil wedding night.”
She chuckled. “Yes oo Suzy. But when the guy hook me, the thing weak me o.”

I couldn’t contain my laughter. “Aww…” I shook my head. She finally found her Joromi.
She laughed. “Suzy, he’s so sweet.”

“And,” I expected her to continue.

“And what else?” She asked.

“Is it only sweet that got you pregnant?”

Her laughter almost blocked my ears. “Oh my God! Suzy you have corrupt finish.”

I knew she must be blu-shing. I heard her chuckled a little. “Well, he’s not as tall as my brother, because all those tall guys will have it long, but you know…”
“I don’t know oooo..” I quic-kly shouted, laughing. I was acting like a saint, not helping matter. We both bur-st into laughter.
“That’s not all Suzy.”
“He bought you a house?”
“Lol, no.” She chuckled. “I’m getting married.”

“Ma what?”

“Marry o Suzy.”

I laughed. She actually surprised me. She wasn’t young though. We were both of the same age. Twenty six. She finished before me while I was still in school. It was during our long chats, and talks that I knew she was also a vir-gin. Scared of getting pregnant at young age because of her mom.

“Suzy, as wealthy as my Mom and Dad are, if I surprise them with pregnancy at this hour of time. If Dad did nothing, Mom won’t hesitate to s£nd me out of the house. Besides, I don’t want anything to disturb my education. Guys of nowadays want flesh to flesh. That’s not what is paining me, some girls who are not educated enough on S-x, ventured into it, and get pregnant ma-king the child suffer. Like seriously, the rate of teen pregnancy is getting too much. These young girls are growing too fast, and they will never listen.”
I laughed. Someone nee-ded to be a motivational speaker. She was always like that, and I was glad my Victoria never changed. Now, the vir-gins are no longer two. Someone got that thing before the wedding night.

Well, Victoria was right. Being a v!rg!nis not only for your future husband. Who future husband epp? Is it the guy that has disflowered all the girls in the city.

Like what the motivational speaker once told us in McGill university. You have many reasons to keep your vir-ginity. For your self respect. To prevent yourself from early pregnancy. protec-tion from STDs, and because God himself is against it. ‘But even if you will, there is time for everything. And don’t forget to use protec-tion.’ She had told us.

As much as I want to go back to sleep, I picked up my phone that wouldn’t st©p ringing. A smile spre-ad on myl-ips knowing who my caller was. “Hey handsome.”
“Hi pretty,” he replied, and I blu-shed. “Are you getting prepared alre-ady?” He asked.

I shook my head. “No. Even Love is here telling me to get up.”
“Uncle Austin good morning.” Love shouted so Austin could hear her. I immediately put in on loud speaker.
“Morning beautiful,” Austin replied her, ma-king her smile. “Suzy get re-ady so that we can leave on time.”
The call was ended, and I knew there was no more time for sleep again. Austin was my new b©yfri£nd. We’ve been together for seven months now. And when Mom knew about him, she was against it because he was also a doctor, saying it will affect our children by the time we settle down. To be sincere, Austin rarely offers to take me to p@rties. But this one, he insisted he would take me, and I really don’t know why, but I was glad he was going to take me, because I knew what I was going to be facing.

“Get up, get up, let’s get re-ady.” I announced, and immediately, my niece jumped out of the be-d removing her clothes one time, rushing into the bathroom before me.
