“Here, sir. Your cinnamon bread. I hope you’ll
enjoy it.” I smiled at the middle-aged man as I
pas-sed him the box. He took it from me as his
grey eyes shone brightly on the sight of bread
and then thanked me politely.
After he left, I moved to walk back to kitchen
to help Liam but the sharp sound of heels
entering into the bakery caught my attention.
“Helena,” I said, surprised at her arrival. I
haven’t talked to her since I came back from
Malibu and I didn’t know what was the
protocol of meeting the girl who broke my
best friend’s heart.
“Scarlet,” she reached me and then gave me a
small hu-g. “I missed you so much.” she said
in a friendly manner and I stood there static,
not knowing what to say.
“Um… Same.” I replied hesitantly as I parted
away from her. She looked wonderful as
always in a blus-hing red jumpsuit, her long
hair perfectly styled and her face covered with
flawless makeup.
I took her to one of the tables arranged at the
other sides of the hall. I asked her if she would
like to have anything but she said she was full.
“So tell me, how was your honeymoon?” she
grinned at me in a suggestive manner.
“It was just a business trip.” A blus-h crept up
my cheeks as I remembered the night when he
ki-ssed me pas-sionately. I have been dying to
ki-ss him again but things weren’t getting to it
yet.
“Of course it was,” she winked at me.
“What’s going on in your life?” I asked to
change the topic and keep on the
conversation.
“Nothing much. Just work and…” she stopped
talking while her eyes fixated on someone. I
angled my ne-ck to look at Liam standing on
the counter, catching glances at us. They both
had a little staring contest which was broken
by Liam first.
“Liam told me what happened.” I commented
and her face ha-rdened at this.
“I don’t know why he made a big deal out of it.
I never told him that we were exclusive or
anything.” she said sourly as she looked away
from him.
“He is a wonderful person, Helena. I think you
made a mistake.” I told her and she narrowed
her eyes.
“I don’t do relationships, Scarlet. I can’t spend
my whole life with one person. There was only
one man who made me want to leave all the
other guys behind and that was Evan.” she said
in a gloomy voice and guilt filled me at this.
When I married him, I didn’t know someone
else was interested in him.
“I don’t know what to say.” I replied honestly.
We changed the topic of our conversation to
currents events happening in the country. Then
she told me about a recent event where she
met Leonardo DiCaprio. Her life was so
interesting that it put my monotonous routine
to shame.
“And you know, Gigi Hadid told me that—” Her
gaze froze once again as it stopped at
someone. “Who is this girl? I didn’t see her
last time.”
I turned to look where she was looking and
found Rachel and Liam talking to each other in
a friendly manner. A frown appeared on
Helena’s face and if I was any better at judging
people’s expression, she looked slightly
jealous.
“She is our new waitress.” I told her.
“She is so…” she paused and threw daggers at
her with her eyes. “Average. She doesn’t look
good with Liam.”
The bitterness in her voice was as clear as the
sky outside. I smi-rked as I commented, “She
is really nice and more importantly, Liam’s
type. They look good together. They are just
friends.” I said and then added, “But who
knows what the future holds for them.”
“Hopefully, nothing.” she rolled her eyes and
then shifted her attention to her mobile screen.
“I should go now. Bye.”
“Bye.” I said and watched her go. As she
walked in front of Liam, they both greeted each
other like two strangers but Liam’s eyes
lingered on her back until she was inside her
car.
………..
I was working late again. We had to prepare
order of a customized cake for an anniversary
party and Liam had to leave early because his
sister Jenna was in town. He took Rachel with
him to hang out with her sister and now, I was
alone in the bakery.
After the delivery man took the order, I decided
to clean the bakery a little. I was in the middle
of wiping the tables when I heard the door
open. I turned towards the door and found the
landlord Tank standing there with a scowl on
his face. “You’re late again. Where is the rent?”
“I.. Um.. I was actually just thinking about it.
Don’t worry. I’ll give it to you by the end of this
week. We have a big order coming up.” I said
in the most convincing tone possible.
He walked inside with an irritated look at his
face. I gulped nervously as he made his way to
the counter and picked up my untou-ched glas-s
of jui-ce to drink it without my permission. I
balled my fists, trying to control my anger.
“Excuses, excuses. If you can’t afford it, why
can’t you get the fu-ck out?”
“I… I told you. Just give me this week.” I said
in a firm voice.
“And I told you earlier. If you repeated the
delay again, I would practically drag you out.”
he gr-unted loudly and slowly made his way to
me.
“Tank, there is no nee-d to be disrespectful.” I
glared at him. This was no way to behave with
someone when I have been nothing but
respectful to him.
“Oh, shut up, you fu-ck ing—”
“You shut up, you… You… You rude man.” I
tried to find an appropriate insult but failed.
“Oh, so the kitten has a tongue. Well, say it
from outside the shop.” he said and attempted
to grip my hand when a voice echoed,
followed by the sound of door opening.
“I don’t know who you are but if you touch my
wife, I’ll kill you with my ba-re hands.” The
familiar voice said. I gaped at the door as
Evan stepped throu-ghit and made his way to
us with a deadly glare on his face.
“Oh, so you’re this girl’s husband. Listen man,
tell your wife to pay her rent.” His tone
softened a little because Evan was pretty
intimidating, with his tall built and crisp black
suit. Tank was a se-xist who always used a
better tone with men. “Otherwise, next time,
she won’t walk out of this place on her own.”
“There won’t be any next time.” Evan said and
my eyes wide-ned in confusion. “My secretary
will send you your money and then you can
shove this place up your as-s.”
“What?” Both Tank and I said in unison.
He cast a glance at me that said that it would
be better for me to shut up right now. He then
glared dangerously at Tank who in return
scowled at him and then walked past us out of
the bakery. After he left, Evan turned towards
me and said, “Why didn’t you tell me you were
having money problems?”
“Well, it wasn’t part of the deal.” I said,
remembering how I refused to use his money
for my own benefits. “And this was not
something that affects your reputation so I
couldn’t use your money for it.”
This seemed to tick him off and he took a
step towards me. I tried to back away but he
quickly moved forwards and pulled me
towards him with an arm around my wai-st.
“This marriage is just a deal?” he whispered
and I struggled to stop losing myself in the
whirlpool of his blue eyes.
“Um… I… You…”
He inclined his head so his li-ps were hovering
over me. “Tell me. Did nothing change in these
last few days?” he whispered again and my
eyes closed at his closeness.
I gulped and rested my hands on his shoulder
to support myself. In an instant, his li-ps met
mine and my lungs stopped working. His li-ps
were demanding while mine were submissive,
the perfect combination for a perfect ki-ss. Our
mouths moulded together, tugging, su-cking,
wanting more. Before finishing the ki-ss, he bit
gently on my lower li-p and a small frustrated
Gr0-n made it’s way throu-ghmy throat. The
ki-ss was brief but hot enough to make me feel
dizzy because all the blood rushed to other
places.
When he pulled his face away, his pupils were
dialed and I was sure so were mine. “I’ll ask
Gabe to help you find the new place for your
bakery.” he said as he brushed my lower li-p
with his thumb.
“But I don’t….”
“Ssshhh,” he placed his finger on my li-ps.
“Don’t worry about money. Just buy the best
damn place and all the best appliances you
nee-d. un-derstand?” he said, staring at my li-ps.
“And I don’t like to hear no.”
“Okay.” I whispered slowly.
“Good girl.” he winked at me and I flushed red
at his actions.

“So is this place final?” Gabe asked me as he
noted everything the real estate agent had told
us.
“I can’t think of a reason why not.” I whispered,
staring around me in awe. I still couldn’t
believe Evan was helping me buy a place of
my own for the bakery. I won’t have to care
about the rent or any degradation. I had no
idea how I would make it up to him for his
favour.
This place was few block away from my last
bakery so I won’t have to disappoint my
regular customers. Plus, this one was bigger
and far more lavish than the last one. Despite
the modern architecture, it had a traditional
look in it, just how I like.
“The rest of the work will be done by our
interior decorator. I’ll ask him to meet you and
you can tell him all your requirements.” Gabe
told me.
“Thanks.” I said.
“My plea-sure.” he smiled. “Besides, it is my
job to facilitate you and sir.”
“Okay, I should go now. The driver is waiting
for me.” I said and made my way to the car.
Evan had ordered me this morning to go with
the driver wherever I want instead of calling a
cab. My husband was one stubborn man and
when he is not in mood, he doesn’t listen to
anyone.
The driver drove me back to the house. It was
still early in the evening. Cara was out playing
with her friend and Evan hadn’t returned yet
from office. I decided to cook the dinner
tonight for the three of us and gave Kelly and
George an off so that they can go enjoy a
little.
I decided to go a little fancy tonight and
decided to make Garlic bu-tter steak with
mashed potatoes, stirred vegetables. I knew
Evan loved eating steaks so I Br@ced myself
for putting all my effort in the dinner.
By the time I cooked everything, I heard the
door knock. Before I could reach the door,
Cara had already made her way towards the
door to open it as George wasn’t there.
Evan appeared throu-ghthe door and when he
lowered his head to find Cara grinning, he
picked her up in his arms. I smiled as I saw
them together. Evan was wrong; any wall can
be broken with some effort.
“I’ll serve the dinner and you can go freshen up
if you want. I gave Kelly and George off
tonight.” I told him when he noticed me
standing. He nodded and then lowered Cara
back to the floor, making his way to our room.
By the time he returned, I had set the table for
all three of us. I served steak, mashed
potatoes and stirred vegetables in all three
plates and then picked up some fresh flowers
from the garden behind the kitchen to set them
in the middle of the table.
“What’s the occasion?” he asked, drawing his
eyebrows closer.
“Nothing. Why? Can’t I cook dinner without any
occasion?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.
“You can,” A corner of his mouth lifted while he
sat down and took a sniff off the flowers. I
seated on one side of him while Cara adjusted
herself on the other side.
“Cara, can I slice your steak for you?” I asked
because Cara always had difficulty with using
knife and fork.
“I will do it myself.” she said in a determined
voice and mimicked me as I picked up both
utensils.
I looked at Evan to see his reaction on the
steak. His face visibly relaxed as he took the
knife and he closed his eyes briefly, a sign that
he liked it and my heart filled with joy. He
wasn’t a man of much words and he often
depicts his mood with such small gestures.
“It’s nice.” he said and continued eating.
Cara was struggling in handling the knife. I
offered to help her but she was firm in her
decision of doing it herself. Like father, like
daughter.
It was Evan who finally offered to teach her
and she agreed to his help instantly. He held
her small hands with his large ones and
positioned the knife and fork in correct
position.
“Like this,” he guided her hands and helped her
slice a small piece of steak. Then he let her
try again and this time, she succeeded in
doing it correctly. I was silently watching all of
this, smiling at their cute actions.
After the dinner was over, I expected all three
of us to sit there and have some quality time
but Evan stood up and told us that he had
some work to do. I pouted as I saw him
making his way to our room.
“Why is Daddy always so busy?” Cara asked,
finishing the last of vegetables off her plate.
“Because Daddy is a big businessman. He runs
a big company and he is really ha-rdworking.” I
told her and she looked like she was trying her
best to un-derstand. “Tell me Cara, do you want
to be a businesswoman when you grow up?”
“No, because then I won’t have enough time to
spend with you or Daddy.” she said and I
beamed proudly at her response. “I want to a
baker like you.” she added.
I placed my palm over her hand and mas-saged
it gently. “Your dad loves you a lot, Cara. He
does everything for you. Do you un-derstand
this?” I asked. She nodded hesitantly, unsure of
what to reply. “He just isn’t very expressive.”
“Ex… Expre.. Expersive?” she stuttered.
“Expressive. It means he just doesn’t know
how to express his love for you.” I told her and
she nodded.
“Does Daddy love you too?” she asked me and
my mouth opened wide.
“Um… Well…” I for-ced my mind to think of a
possible answer but failed badly. I didn’t want
to find the answer to this question because if it
was in negative, it would shatter my heart. “I…
Um… I don’t know actually.”
“I think he does. He smiles when he looks at
you. He never smiled before you came.” she
said innocently and my cheeks burned up at
this. I blus-hed as I stood up and asked her to
come with me so I could tuck her on her bed.
“Do you love Daddy?” she asked as she walked
behind me with small steps.
I once again became quiet because I had
nothing to say. Did I love him? I don’t know.
But I do know that whenever I am with him, my
heart starts beating at a fas-ter speed and my
sweat glands become overactive.
“I do like him. Sometimes liking a person is
more than enough.” I replied briefly.
Once we reached her room, we cozied
ourselves un-der the warm blanket. I told her
about my day and then she told me about
hers. We were in the middle of talking when
her eyes started turning droopy. She was trying
her best to stay awake but soon, she gave in
to sleep and snuggled dee-perinto the blanket.
Placing a small ki-ss on her forehead, I hopped
out of the bed and made my way to our room.
Evan was sitting on the bed, working on his
laptop without acknowledging my presence. I
hated his mood when he was busy in some
work. He forgets about everyone around him
and keeps his focus on only his laptop or files.
I prefer when he teases me or acts
mischievously but well, this Evan comes free
with that Evan so I will have to bear with it.
I walked past the bed into the closet. Taking
off the dress, I changed into my light pink
color nightie and did my skincare routine which
consisted of just a night cream. I had grown
used to wearing such nightwear because they
feels smooth against my skin and keeps me
cold un-der the warm blanket. So few earlier
this week, I went back to that sto-re and bought
two more.
I was about to wear the matching gown over
the nightie when a mischievous idea ran
throu-ghmy mind. It was dangerous and I
could end up Infuriating Evan but I was ready
to take the risk, just so I could see the look
on Evan’s face. At least that would take his big
head out of that damn laptop.
With that thought in mind, I threw the
nightgown away and walked out of the closet
in just the nightie.
