? Chapter Thirty-Four ?

~‘I’m ready to trust you’~

?BALLERINA?

“My princess. God, I’ve been do worried about you. Are you okay? Where have you been?” Heather asked as soon as Ballerina walked throu-ghthe door, looking all tired.

“I’m fine, Heather. I just need rest.” Ballerina said walking away.

She walked inside her room, shutting the door close and going to sit on her soft bed.

She let out a de-ep sigh, falling back flat on the bed while gazing up at the ceilings.

^Him…^

She thought to herself, smiling.

She has never felt this free and happy around someone until ‘him’

She has never been so determined to make someone smile until ‘Him’

She isn’t even happy herself and here she was thinking about making ‘him’ happy.

Crazy, right?

She couldn’t even make him smile _in case you were wondering_

He didn’t smile even after she danced and danced her should away. He didn’t smile. He just stared at her.

That made her even more determined to make him smile and she sure as hell going to do just that.

She took out Heather’s necklace once again and stared at it _her focus were mainly on the pendant_

She wasn’t going to sit around and trust someone when all she needed to do was the find her aunt’s murderer.

Heather or not, she wasn’t going to withdrew.

And if trusting Paulo means doubting Heather then it’s worth the risk.

?PAULO?

The next day Paulo went to the address given to him by Liam _Mr Samuel James_ He never heard about the man until last night.

Why…?

His car came to a halt in front of a white building. He let out a de-ep sigh before getting out of the car and going closer to the front door.

He knocked once but there was no answer. He knocked and knocked again… Finally, the door was opened, revealing an old woman of probably seventy years or more than.

“Good morning Ma’am.” Paulo greeted with a smile.

She smiled at him as well. “Good morning dear. How may i be of help to you?”

“Um… Is this Mr Samuel James resident?” He asked.

The woman raised a confused brow at him, holding the doorknob tightly. “What do you want from him?”

“Uh… Nothing. I just need his help on something.”

“No, you can’t see him. You can’t _”

“Let me see him.” A voice said from behind the woman.

Paulo stared directly at him and immediately he knew it was ‘him’

“Mr James.” He called out.

“I would have acknowledge with your name as well if I know yours. Please come in.” He opened the door wide enough for Paulo to walk throu-gh.

They went to the sitting room and sat door while the old woman excused herself to get Paulo something to drink.

“What’s your name, young man?” He asked calmly.

“I’m Paulo. Detective Paulo.” He said.

“Detective?”

“Yes sir. I work for the same station where you once worked for.” He explained.

“Oh. What are you doing here then? Did Martin send you to me? Isn’t he done with everything he did to me?”

“Mr Martin? What about Mr Martin? What did he do to you?”

“Something I will never forget all because of a damn case.” He sighed. “Why did he send you here?”

Paulo shook his head. “He didn’t send me here. I came on my own.”

“Why?”

Mrs James returned back with a tray of two steaming coffee and placed it on the table then sat down beside her husband.

“Make yourself comfortable.” She said to Paulo.

“Thank you.” Paulo grabbed one mug and held it. “Sir, I don’t know the case you are talking about but I hope it’s that same case that brou-ght me.”

“What?”

“The case of fifteen years ago. The case of_”

“Mr Reyes and his son?” He finished the statement, staring at Paulo with his eyes wife open.

“Yes.”

“No,” Mrs James quickly cut throu-ghthe discussion. “My husband will not go back to that case. I won’t let him. Not after everything.”

“Calm down, honey. I am not going back to any case, trust me.” He turned back to Paulo. “Why are you really here, young man?”

“I need your help. I don’t know why your wife and you are so afraid about it but I really hope that you can help me.”

“That case is ages ago so why are you still asking about it?”

“The son. He wants answer.”

“He should. Not after witnessing that murder.”

“He witnessed it?”

“Listen young man, I can’t be of any help to you on that case but… i know someone who can help you with it.” He stood up to his feet and walked away.

“Am I to leave?” Paulo asked Mrs James.

“No. He definitely went to get you something you might need to contact the person.” She replied. “The murderer won’t kill him.” She said after a moment of silence.

“What?”

“He shouldn’t worry about getting killed because it isn’t him the murderer wants…but someone else.” As soon as she said that, Mr James returned with a small note and handed it over to Paulo.

“There is the person’s address and phone number. Go to her if you need answers.”

Paulo collected it as he stood up to his feet. “Thank you.” He dropped the mug on the table and turned to leave when Mr James stopped him by saying something.

“They will kill you if you keep getting involve. Be careful.”

?LIAM?

The bell dinged as he walked throu-ghit. He walked towards the counter, a girl sat behind it, typing away in her phone.

She didn’t even notice him until he tapped his finger on the counter.

She look up at him with a warm smile on her face, setting her phone aside. “Hi. What will you like, sir?”

“I’m Detective Liam,” He waved his card in her face. “I want to see the CCTV footage of two weeks ago.”

The girl shook her head, standing up to her feet. “You can’t. The boss…my boss won’t like that.”

“Fortunately, your boss is aware of this and besides, I’m doing all of this for him so I’d advice you let me in or lose your job.”

*****

Liam walked out of the Café, looking so confuse. He took out his phone from his pocket and dialed Paulo’s number.

“Detective P.” He greeted as soon as Paulo picked the call.

“Detective L. What’s up? How is everything going over there?” He asked.

“I’ve checked the CCTV footage.” Liam replied him, looking down at the flash drive on his palm. “I made a copy as well. I want you to watch the footage yourself.”

“Oh. Alright. I will meet you at the station but first I need to check on someone.”

? Chapter Thirty-Five ?

~It’s a girl~

?PAULO?

“Who are you.” A woman asked as soon as she came out of the house.

“I’m detective Paulo.” He said calmly.

“detective?” She repeated, a bit confuse.

“Yes. Are you Mrs Smith?” He asked.

“Well… yes?”

“I’m here to have a word with you, hope you don’t mind?”

“I don’t understand. What do you want to probably talk to me about? I don’t even know you!” She exclaimed.

“Probably. But you do know about something that I need.”

“Um…come on in then.” She stepped aside for him to walk throu-gh. Paulo appreciated her before stepping in. She slammed the shut. “Seat while I go get you something to drink.” She walked away leaving just him in the living room.

After a while she returned with a tray of a cup of tea and handed it over to him before taking her seat at the opposite couch away from Paulo.

“Thanks.” Paulo said nodding at the cup of tea in his hand.

“It’s alright.” She smiled. There was a moment of silence until she spoke up again. “What do you want from me, detective?”

Paulo set the cup of tea on the table beside the chair where he was sitting on before focusing his attention on Mrs Smith. “I need some information from you.”

“You’ve said that before but I don’t get… what information could I possibly know?”

Paulo sighed before saying. “An information regarding an incident of fifteen years ago.”

“Fifteen years ago?” She raised a questioning brow at him, still trying to get what he was saying.

“Mr Reyes.”

Immediately the woman’s eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open. She tried talking but just couldn’t. It felt like the words have disappeared out of her mouth.

“Are… you okay?” Paulo asked in concern.

“Wh…why? That case happened a very long time ago so…why are you still searching?” She finally said, taking in few de-ep breaths.

“The child wants answers.” Paulo answered calmly.

“The child? Is it the boy or the girl?” She asked.

“The girl?” Paulo repeated in confusion.

“Yes. They were two children that night. A girl and a boy. They were the only two witness of that night. Especially the girl.” Mrs Smith said.

“Wait, there was a girl in the scene? I… I thought it was only the boy.” It wasn’t a question but it sounded like one.

“That is what they made everyone believed. But there was a girl also.”

“Are you sure because_”

She cuts him off. “I’m very sure.”

?NAOMI?

“Please seat.”

“Thank you.” Naomi offered him a smile before sitting down. Doctor Charles sat down as well, opposite from where she was sitting. “How have you been?”

“Good? How are you?”

She smiled. “Not bad.”

“Are you okay?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“Why else will you be here to see a doctor?” He shrugged.

“You can see a doctor for other different reasons, you know that right?”

“Really?”

“Stop joking.” She laughed.

Doctor Charles chuckles. “But like seriously, why are you here?” He repeated the question again, going into serious mode.

“It’s about my son. Ace.”

“What about him?”

“Um… will Ace regain his memory?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“I don’t know… I’m just… I think he remembered something.”

“What is it?”

She let out a shaky breath. “He came to me last night _”

~FLASHBACK~

Naomi walked out of the kitchen holding a mug of hot chocolate when the front door open and Ace walked throu-gh, his face were as ha-rd as a rock and then he approached her.

“Son, you are_”

“Who was with father when he died?” He asked, cutting her off from whatever she was going to say.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“Yes, I did. But why are you asking me that? I mean, who else would have been with him that night if not_”

“Don’t lie to me!” He flared up.

Naomi flinched, letting go of the mug of hot chocolate in her hand, the mug fell and broke into pieces. “What is this?… What do you remember?” She breaths out, trying her best to control her breath.

“Oh, so my memory is indeed messed up, isn’t it?”

“Ace…”

He stepped away from her as she tried to reach out to him. “I will find it.”

“Find what?”

“My memory.”

~END OF FLASHBACK~

“He said that?” Doctor Charles asked in surprise.

Naomi nodded her head calmly. “Yes he did. And I’m confuse. Will Ace regain his memory? Won’t it cause complications if he try finding his memory?”

“It depends.”

“On what?”

“In who is around him.”

“What do you mean?”

“If he is around those who was involve with him during that night then it will be easy for him to regain back his memory.” Doctor Charles stared at Naomi for a while. “You don’t want him to regain his memory, right?”

“I want him to but… I’m afraid.”

“Afraid of what, Mrs Reyes?”

“Afraid of losing my son.”

?PAULO?

He walked inside the station and signalled Liam and Kat to meet him at the rooftop of the building then went away.

minutes later they both came to him. Liam was holding a laptop while Kat was holding some cans of soda drinks.

“Here,” She tossed one over to Paulo before sitting down beside him. “How was the investigation?”

He sighed. “Very complicated.” He turned to Liam. “You said it was a child who witnessed the murder…can I ask what gender it is?”

“A boy. Why?”

Paulo slowly shook his head. “They were two children. A boy and a girl.”

“A girl? What girl?” Kat questioned.

“I don’t know but that shouldn’t be the question. The question here should be, who is the girl?”

*He shouldn’t worry about getting killed because it isn’t him the murderer wants…but someone else.*

Paulo processed that word over and over again. Finally, he understood what Mrs James meant.

“The murderer won’t be after Ace because he isn’t the witness but they would rather be after the girl because she is the witness.” He whispered to himself, staring down at soda drink Kat had given to him. “But who is she?”

“We need to investigate on that then.” Liam said. “But you need to watch this first.” He handed the laptop over to Paulo and played the video that had been on pause.

The video started playing, revealing one of the employees going to that same place were they had sat to clear the table then the girl walked away. After a moment someone came there, they were wearing a black hoodie so their face couldn’t be made out. They sat down for a while as if waiting for someone… and indeed someone did came alongside the employee who had came to clean off the table earlier ago. She was holding something now.

They were saying someone but their voices couldn’t be heard so no word were made out.

“What do you think they are talking about?” Kat asked no one in particular.

“How do you expect us to know?” Liam rolled his eyes at her.

“Don’t you dare roll your eyes at me ever again.” She warned, glaring at him.

“The employee who had come to clean wasn’t holding anything when she came here to clean up the table and her hair were packed.” Paulo observed.

“Yes?” Kat pressed on.

“What are you trying to say?” Liam added.

“They are two different people.”

“Who?”

“The waitress of earlier and the waitress of now.”

“But how? She was the only one who came there to clean up the table and then she returned back again, holding a docu-ment. who knows maybe she hid the docu-ment because she knew the CCTV were watching.” Kat said.

Paulo shook his head. “The earlier waitress had a name tag on her uniform but this waitress have no name tag. The earlier waitress have a brownish hair while this waitress have a black hair… does that refresh your memory?” He was staring at Kat now.

“You…you are right. I didn’t even notice all of those things. But how come we didn’t see the part when this waitress came to take the docu-ment?”

“There are two options here; One, either that part was cut off. Or two, someone else had come in here to take the docu-ment. Someone less suspicious.”

Liam took back the video to the beginning and that was when they saw someone else. Someone different cleaning up the ‘mess’ from the table.

“Someone like the janitor.” Kat said in a whisper.
