BETRAYER IN DISGUISEšŸ‘½šŸ‘½
Episode 5.

Story by Miriam Edem

The officers let go of me and I fell on the ba-re ground and they locked the cell back.
“How will you treat a criminal if I’m handled this way! I shouted on them.
“We go soon break your mouth, one said and they left.

“At least you’ve eaten Joan, I told myself getting up but couldn’t help it- I bec@mĀ£ scared with the thought of how I’m going to escape this.

Evening c@mĀ£ and I saw my family no where, in fact no one smelled the area but I only heard voices around.
I began to scream again but one one responded, I was totally ignored like I never existed neither was I given something to eat or drink.

It was the dawn of another day and I woke up realizing I sle-pt off with my head bent sideways as I leaned on the wall.
My nĀ£Ā¢k hurts terribly as I tried to get up and I saw the late man wife majestically walking to the gate.

“Hey baby girl, had a sound rest? She asked but I couldn’t reply when I was trying to endure the pains I was feeling.
“Are you re-ady to comply now? She asked when no one gave her a reply.

“Where is my family? Why has no one visited me? I asked.
“Oh because they did yesterday huh? What did they tell you, that you will leave this place? No baby girl, you will never escape this. Its okay they insisted to take this to court, fine I have no problem with that, but they will never see you till we get to court! She replied and my eyes bulged out.

“What! You’re joking right? You cant be serious. You know its such a shame you’re wasting your energy on the wrong person when your husband killer is out there……. “Then tell me the person! She shouted cutting in.

“I don’t know, Figure it out yourself and let me go! Do I look like a killer to you? You all are so dumb, very dumb! I angrily shouted and she smiled.
“Wow wow wow! Very br@ve of you darling and I’m beginning to enjoy this, she said but I was trembling alre-ady.

“We will see, she said and wanted to leave and I ran to the gate holding it,
“Ma’am plea-se I swear I’m innocent, I don’t know what to say anymore because I’ve exhausted all I know.
Keeping me here honestly won’t give you the answer or lead you to your husband killer because I have no idea or clue of how it happened. All i know was I served and I get the tray in public where everyone sees, how will i then poison someone i don’t know? I calmly said and she stĀ©pped looking at me.

“Tell me more, you were not among the girls as-signed there, why were you there? She asked.
“I told them alre-ady, my friend Favour requested for my help. We do things together and she felt I should help her out there which I did. She poured the drinks for me inside the counter, while I stood outside getting the trays from her and served, I replied and she drew near to the gate.

“Did she also served? She asked.
“No, actually she remained there, but I and the Two girls did. But the two girls poured their wine and served, while I eased the job for my friend, I replied.

“Okay, so why my husband? Can you remember anything… Like can you remember when you served him? Did you hold other drinks in the tray? She asked a question that has never been asked before and my head began to ring a bell as everything bec@mĀ£ clear.
“Try to remember my husband face and tell me what you know, I can help you, she said while I was still thinking.

“Yes, yes, I remember serving him but he asked for the wine name and i told him i have no idea. The lady beside him took a glas-s…… “Say side chick, she cut in.

“Yes side chick whatever, He then asked me to serve the rest and bring him a p@rticular drink….. Something Pari…. “Campari? She cut in.

“Exactly! I confirmed when I was finding it ha-rd to remember.
“Wait a minute, officer! She shouted and an officer entered.

“Open the gate, she told him and he did.
I c@mĀ£ out meeting her kind of confused and she gave a little smile,
“Are you telling me the truth? She asked.

“God is my witness, I replied.
“Lets talk in a Better place, she said and took me to the interrogation room and called the two officers who do question me to come around.

“So after he asked for Campari what next? The officer who met me earlier asked.
“I went back to my friend after serving the drink I had and told her someone is requesting for Campari. But before then my friend was discussing with her cousin and her cousin asked who is requesting for the drink which i pointed at the man.
Favour told me she will look for the drink and gave me another tray which i took it and left leaving her with her cousin. When I returned her cousin alre-ady left and Favour gave me the glas-s of drink and asked me to check if that glas-s is clean. The glas-s wasn’t filled up and I just used my index f!nger to clean the tĀ©p but I found no dust. She told me its alright that she only wanted to confirm because I’ll be giving it to a big man, so I took it and left, I narrated and the woman looked at the officers who were just looking at me saying nothing.

“Let me see the l@ptĀ©p again, the woman said and it was just what I said.
“It doesn’t look like she put anything, the woman said to the officers.

“We actually thought she knew something because she served him, they replied.
“But did you know about this? The woman asked the officers.
“She tried saying something like that but we thought she was pla-ying around, one replied.

“Who testified against her by the way? The woman asked and I was very eager to know.
“I’ll tell you later, the man replied and I was so disappointed.

“What’s your name? The woman asked me.
“Joan, I replied.

“You know what Joan we are going to investigate on this to make sure you’re saying the truth. If there’s any prove of truth I’ll surely compensate and apologize for the troubles. But for now you’re still going to be here but not the way you used to be. I’ll make you comfortable, give you good food while we secretly investigate on this, the woman said.

‘What! I thought this is over alre-ady, I want to see my mom and i have to go to school I can’t stay here, I said.
“Look you don’t un-derstand, someone implicated you in this case and you have to act cool so we can get that person. Isn’t that what you want? The officer who met me earlier asked and I nodded.

“So keep calm and comply with us, we will continue to act very serious but just leave it to us. We just hope before we get to the court we should get the killer so you won’t have anything to do with this case so you’ll go back to your normal life, the officer said and I sadly nodded.
“Can i at least know who implicated me? I asked.

“Just relax okay, hungry? The officer asked and I nodded.
“What do you want? He calmly asked………

I was given a foam and a blanket to sleep and good food to eat but I missed my family and school.
In the evening one of the officer visited but he refused telling me anything,
“Use this to keep yourself company, he said giving me novels when he was about to go.

“Thank you, I said and he nodded and left.
I heaved and thanked God the tension is kind of relieved, but then who implicated me?
Could it be Favour? I asked myself as i began remembering things that happened that Friday.

Besides her cousin looks suspicious to me- her dressing and everything but Favour said that’s a c@mĀ£ronian style and we laughed shifting it aside.
“It can’t be Favour, i know she must be worried about me….But wait, why was she re-leased when she actually poured the drinks to me? And How did the police get my address when no one knew me in the p@rty ap@rt from her? I asked getting up from the foam pacing around……….

Episode 6.

Story by Miriam Edem

The next day I woke up hearing footsteps and it was the officer who turned to be close approaching,
“Good morning sir, I greeted.
“Morning Joan, managing? He asked but I didn’t reply.

“Alright your parent will be seeing you today so I want you to pretend that we are treating you bad. In fact any bĀ©dy who comes to see you, plea-se don’t behave like you’re comfortable okay, he said.
“I’m not even comfortable but Why? At least that should make my mom not to be disturbe-d about me, I’m worried for her, I said.

“I know but let them be worried, I don’t want anyone to notice anything, let everyone believe you’re the killer until we dig the truth up okay, he said and I heaved.
“Okay, at least I’ll be seeing them today, I miss them so much, I sadly said.

“Its alright, and again I won’t give you anything to eat until they leave. I want them to see that distressed face of yours, he said smiling.
“You’re joking right? I asked and he laughed.

“Just pray they come early so that you’ll have your breakfast. I repeat, don’t tell them anything okay, he said and I nodded.
“You can re-ad your novels, bye, he said and left and I cleaned my face leaning my head on the wall.

I closed my eyes trying to endure the headache I was having- only God knows how long but the key on the gate made me open my eyes.
“Your parents are here, the officer said and i stood up and followed him out.

I got to the visiting area and hvgged my mom ti-ght and did same to my dad. I looked at my brother for a while but he drew me close for the hvg instead,
“How are you faring here? My brother asked.
“I’ll be fine, I replied and we sat down.

Their face wasn’t good and they didn’t say anything to me either,
“What’s wrong mom? I asked.
“Joan I don’t want you to be scared but you’ll surely leave this place, she replied.

“Mom is there anything you’re not telling me? I asked.
“Joan just be strong okay. The man family is really on our nĀ£Ā¢k but we will get throu-gh this, my dad replied and I bowed my head. My brother tĀ©uƧhed me and I gave a weak smile, I didn’t know how to tell them the latest development but I have to respect the officer judgement.

What hurts is that my family is also affected in this mess because of me.
“sĀ£nior what about Favour, did you talk to her? I asked my brother.
“Yes we did and tried to question her but she broke down crying and ended up saying nothing tangible, he replied.

“I don’t un-derstand, you didn’t get anything from her like how she left the station and how I got involved? I asked.
“We did. But she said they showed her your picture and asked of your address which she gave. She asked what’s going on and they simply told her you’ll only be questioned that’s all. She didn’t know it will get to this point and she apologized for asking you to attend the p@rty, my dad replied and I wasn’t satisfied with the response.

“Just that? I mean…… An officer approached and I swallowed which my mom held my hands.
“We will fight this together okay, plea-se be strong for us, my mom said getting.

“Everything will be okay for sure, I miss you mom, I said and hvgged my family and left with the officer.
I returned to the cell thinking about what my dad told me,
“Favour broke down crying? What is she trying to say now? I asked scratching my head and sat down so disturbe-d.

The gate opened and I was given my breakfast but I just shifted it in a corner not hungry. Evening c@mĀ£ and no one visited but I was only served meals I couldn’t enjoy.
I wasn’t comfortable and was slowly dying of boredom.

I spent the night crying to myself and prayed if I escape this, I will always be careful for as long as i live. It was an experience i won’t want it to repeat itself again, an experience I’ve learned without lectures.

The next day I was served breakfast but i rejected it,
‘I want to see the man who do question me, or better still the late man wife. I want to know what’s going on out there, I’m tired to be locked here all day eating food, I said.

“If you don’t want to eat, leave it there, the officer said and left and I angrily kicked the food away breathing ha-rd .
I was gradually going crazy and I badly nee-ded someone to talk to.

In the afternoon I was slee-ping when i heard the sound of the gate. I opened my eyes and saw the man and quic-kly sat up greeting him, then he saw the food I kicked.
“What happened? I thought I told you to comply? He asked.

“I’m losing it sir, I don’t want this life I’m living its killing me slowly, I nee-d fresh air, I replied with tears swelling up in my eyes.
“Have you eaten? He asked.

“I’m not hungry, I replied.
“Someone is waiting for you, he said.

“Who? I asked.
“The man wife, he replied and I stood up to follow him out.

We sat at the interrogation room waiting for her to finish her phone call, then she looked at me when she was done.
“You don’t look good Joan, whats wrong? She asked.
“She refused eating today, the man replied.

‘Why? The man asked me.
“I want to go home, i want to go to school. I’m missing things alre-ady and boredom is killing me, I replied and she looked at the officer and he cleared his throat.

“Okay, I met with Favour…. Kind of, he said and I sat up very interested.
“What did she say? I asked but his mood was something I can’t explain and it made me more confused.

“Is there a problem? I asked.
“Actually Joan, the person who implicated you was Favour! The man dropped and I blinked my eyes and smiled then eventually laughed and they were just looking at me.

“You’re joking right? I see You all do nothing than to accuse people wrongly with no solid evidence. Tell me its a lie! i said and the man shook his head.
“I’ll pretend i didn’t hear that, The man replied.

“You really trust your friend that much don’t you? The woman asked.
“She’s my friend and cant do this to me, i refuse to believe this! I replied.

“Joan…… “No, that’s not true, I cut in shaking alre-ady.
“Joan listen to me! Do you think we are joking here? I am all out for my husband killer and i have no time to waste here, you better believe what we just told you or you’ll go back to the cell and Serve the punishment you didn’t do! The woman angrily shouted at me.

“Joan listen to this, we have the recording of what she said implicating you. In fact she is the witness that wanted testifying against you in court, that would have probably knocked you off in court. And for your information, she was not a friend to you. We knew more about Favour when we used your clas-smate Prisca to trick her yesterday, The man said and myl-ips were shaking alre-ady with severe cold from no where that gr!ppĀ£dme.

“Prisca? I shakily asked.
“Yes Prisca and she recorded all Favour said about you with all plea-sure. Listen to this, the man replied and pla-yed a recording…………….
