EPISODE 05
Vivian and Martin finally c@m£ as they promised. Martin’s mother was so happy to see Vivian again, this time she was so concerned about the pregnancy and Vivian’s health.
When Martin inquired about his father, his mother replied.
“Your father is in the bathroom, he is having his bath, he will join us shortly”
Finally, when Martin’s father c@m£ out, one good stare at the man, Vivian almost lost her breath, she felt like dying, she tried her best to comfort herself, her hands suddenly bec@m£ sweaty and her throat went dry as Martin introduced her to his father.
“Dad meet Vivian, my fiancee” Martin had said in smiles, Vivian was in shock, at the same time she felt like screaming but couldn’t as she suddenly went mute, yes, you guessed right, Martin’s father turned out to be chief Okoh.
“Now I see why Martin and Eric my son got along, blood is thicker than water, oh, i’m finished”Vivian said within and the next minute she coll@psed and everyone was thrown into the state of panic.
“Vivian, my love…. My love” Martin called out to Vivian and in split seconds he was trying to wake her up.
“Let’s take her to the hospital, oh Lord, plea-se I don’t want anything to happen to her or my unborn grand child, Martin get the car keys” Martin’s mother who thought Vivian had fainted because of her pregnancy, suggested
On the other hand, Chief Okoh who also recognized Vivian was in shock, he couldn’t utter a word as everything happened so fast. Even as Vivian was being rushed to a nearby hospital, Chief Okoh was lost in a de-ep thought. He couldn’t wra-p his head around the fact that his son wants to marry his baby mama and worst she is pregnant with Martin’s child.
“I hope my secret will not be expo-sed, my wife and son should not find out that Vivian was once my lover and that we have a son together” The old man thought.
That thought alone blew and threw the old man off balance.
In few hours, Vivian regained consciousness but still she was in a state of shock and confusion. As soon as Martin heard that his Fiancee was awake, he ran to her.
“my love, I’m so happy to see you awake, how are you feeling now? ” Martin happily asked as he hvgged her. “My love, you look scared and worried, what’s up? plea-se talk to me” he continued and Vivian tried to comport herself
“I’m fine, its… just that … I feel very weak and dizzy” she replied.
Martin’s mother was so relieved when the doctor announced that Vivian and her unborn child were safe.
“But I would suggest, she gets enough rest, and avoid stress” the doctor had told Martin’s mother.
The next day, Vivian was discharged from the hospital.
Few days after, Martin who was unaware of what was going on, continued with his wedding plans, the thought of settling down with Vivian gladdens his heart but soon he noticed that ever since Vivian fainted in his parent’s house that she was always cold and quiet around him.
One-day when Martin visited Vivian, he questioned her.
“My love, you are no longer excited about our upcoming wedding, whenever I mention our wedding plans, you always withdraw yourself from the plans or most times you will be so quiet, tell me what’s going on?” Martin had asked.
“It’s nothing, I guess it’s the pregnancy” Vivian entered calmly, she felt so miserable for lying to Martin
“how can I bring myself to reveal that Martin and Eric my son are step brothers…. Oh my God, what will I do?” Vivian had thought.
Martin who wasn’t satisfied with Vivian’s response, tried to get more words from her but at that same time, his phone rang. Immediately he noticed that the caller was his mother, he quic-kly took the call.
“My son, I want you to come over right now’ Martin’s mother said at the other end of the phone.
Martin didn’t continue his discussion with Vivian, instead he hvgged her and bid her goodbye.
“My love, I have to go now, I will call you later, I’m off to my parent’s house, something c@m£ up”Martin said calmly before heading to his car.
When Martin arrived at his parent’s house, he was disappointed when he met them yelling at each other.
“How could you insist that Martin should cancel his wedding plans, Vivian is pregnant and I don’t know why you don’t want our son to get married to a woman whom he loves and adore, how could you be so unreasonable?” Martin’s mother threw in.
“I have my reasons, trust me that girl is not good for our son, I don’t know why you are acting like you don’t un-derstand English language anymore, what p@rt of her not being a good choice for our son that you don’t un-derstand” chief Okoh responded
“Why, let me know your reasons first, you have refused to tell me the reason why Martin shouldn’t marry his fiancee, Vivian, what has come over you? Why did you want to complicate things for our son, I don’t think he will be happy with your decision” Martin’s mother added.
Martin’s parent were seriously yelling at each other but when they noticed Martin’s pres£nce, they comforted themselves and suddenly went mute.
“What’s going on here? Martin asked at once.
“My son….Thank God you are here, I want you to cancel every plans you have made for your wedding because I will never allow you to get married to Vivian, she is not good for you” Chief Okoh entered immediately.
The first thing Martin asked was “Dad why? Vivian is pregnant for me and I love her so much”
That question threw Chief Okoh off balance and left him a bit confused as to how he will give his reasons without his secret being expo-sed.
“I heard Vivian was a slut back in her university days in Calabar” Chief Okoh responded
“Dad how did you know about that?” Martin asked and his father had to lie that he heard from the gossips flying around.
“Dad since when did you start listening to gossips, I don’t mind if my Vivian was a slut during her University days, all I care about is her pres£nt and most especially, I love her so much, Dad everyone has a past” Martin said calmly.
Mr Okoh had the perfect opportunity to come clean and tell his wife and son about Vivian and his illegitimate son, Eric, it was indeed a perfect time for the old man to come out of hiding. But when he imagined how his son and wife will react, he suddenly lost his voice and kept mute.
Martin took a de-ep breath and stared in to his father’s eyes; “Daddy, Vivian is a lady I want to marry and I love her so much, trust me, she is a good girl”Martin continued
“my son, do you know that she is a single mother? She has a 6 years old son” Mr Okoh entered.
“A son?, Vivian has a son?” Martin’s mother bluntly asked , one could easily see how shocked she was. Martin and Vivian never disclosed that fact.
“Dad, how do you know so much about my fiancee?” Martin said softly
” I have my ways of finding out things, you are my son and I don’t want you to get into a wrong marriage” Chief Okoh responded
“Martin, is it true that Vivian really has a son?” Martin’s mother asked repeatedly
“Mom, yes she has a son and I love the little boy, infact I’m so fond of that boy, mom it doesn’t matter if the boy is not my biological son but I love the boy as much as I love his mother” Martin finally replied.
Before Martin could talk further, his mother hushed him and said “ Martin, you have to Un-love Vivian and her son now, because I would never accept such lady into this family and that is final”.
Martin’s mother was about to start a war that didn’t seemed like it was going to end anytime soon and chief Okoh was so delighted that he had won his wife to his side.
“Now you see what I was telling you but you kept singing Vivian’s praise” Chief Okoh added.
Martin who was de-eply in love with Vivian, at that point was willing to go to war with his parents for her. But will he really stand by her till the end, how will he react when the truth finally comes out?
Martin tiredly got up and walked away from his parents without uttering another word in the bid to defend his decisions.
“Where are you going to? We are not done talking, whatever you have with Vivian should be over, you can’t settle down with a girl who had a child out of wedlock and worst she was a slut during her days in the university, how are we so sure that she had really changed her ways or if the child she is expecting is really yours? Bad habits don’t die easily, a slut will always be a slut ” His mother said, but still Martin didn’t st©p or say a word to his parents.
It’s was obvious that there was nothing more for him to talk about with his parents because they have clearly shut him off.
” I thought my parents would be happy for me… Why will they suddenly turn against my Vivian but come to think of it, something doesn’t feel right, how did my father know so much about Vivian, how did he know that she attended University of Calabar, have my dad met Vivian before now?.. Vivian suddenly fainted immediately she met my father.. do they really know each other…..No that’s not possible…. I guess I’m totally wrong, Vivian would have told me if she knew my Dad before now, we tell each other every thing, there’s no secrets between us” Martin thought as he drove away.

Martin was Unable to bear the hurt of how his parents rejected Vivian, he ba-rely concentrated on the road as he drove home that evening. More than twice, He almost lost control of the car. But he tried his best to control his emotions and his thought.
When he got to his house, It was pas-sed 8pm, After he freshened up, he called Vivian to check up on her. Vivian’s Heart raced in fear as she took the call, Because she had as-sumed the worst, when Martin left her house earlier.
Vivian and Martin, chatted for a while but suddenly out of no where, Martin entered in a low tone “my love, have you ever met my father before now? Is there anything you want me to know?”
The manner at which Martin spoke on the phone made Vivian’s heart skip a beat. She was frightened.
“Oh Lord, plea-se I don’t want to lose Martin, I hope chief Okoh had not revealed the truth to his son“ she thought.
Vivian couldn’t utter a word.
“i know you can’t possibly know my father… he has always been a strict and a difficult man but Don’t worry about anything, he can’t come between us, how can a man of his caliber listen to mere gossip ” Martin continued.
Vivian who was still afraid wasn’t going to back off from finding out what Chief Okoh had told his son, When She noticed that her secrets was still unknown to Martin. She entered
“My love, what happened, plea-se talk to me” but Martin didn’t respond immediately, Vivian kept probing him, till he finally let the cat out of the bag.
Martin narrated everything that went down with his parents, When he was done talking, Vivian was so heartbroken, it was obvious that their relationsh!pwas doomed, they couldn’t speak any further till Martin hanged up.
“This is so unfair, how did I find myself in this shameful situation, how can I tell Martin that I was his father’s mistress and that Eric, my son, the boy he love so much… is……his step brother, this is too much and to make the matter worst, I am pregnant for Martin, how did I get here?, how will I explain this?, I have sle-pt with father and son, Martin will not continue with our wedding plans, if he finds out the truth, everything will be over” Vivian thought in tears.
She ba-rely sle-pt that night, all throu-gh that night her eyes were clouded with tears.
On the other hand, Martin was unable to sleep that night too, he had noticed the way Vivian’s voice suddenly bec@m£ shaky, when he told her everything that went down with his parents.
“I don’t know why I feel so strange… I don’t think Vivian is hiding something from me. Because we promised to tell each other everything.. she is just heart broken that my parents rejected her, I’m Heartbroken too” Martin thought.
Martin noticed that Vivian was sad and scared when they spoke but the love he had for her clouded his reasoning.
“Vivian is the only woman who had properly shown me what love truly means and feel like, I will marry her with or without my parent’s cons£nt… For Christ’s sake She is having my baby and I can’t possibly leave her just because my parents say so” He continued in his own thought.
The next day, Vivian’s day began with Chief Okoh’s phone call. She reluctantly picked up
“Vivian, so because I refused to make you my second wife, you went for my son How could you? I have been so generous with you, why will you do this to me?” Chief Okoh entered in a harsh tone, all Vivian’s explanation were in vain because the old man had concluded that Vivian intentionally went for his son.
“My son had always been obe-dient but I don’t know what you did to him, Martin is my first son and it’s an abomination that he is having a child with you and at the same time wants to get married to you, Vivian if you know what is good for you, I’m giving you a week to end any kind of relationsh!pyou have with my son” Chief Okoh thun-dered.
“Chief, What about my pregnancy? I have tried to ab-ort this pregnancy like i tried when I was pregnant with Eric, our son but couldn’t, the doctor said it’s risky for me to ab-ort this pregnancy, I don’t want to die and at the same time, I don’t want to be a single mother of two children, plea-se let me get married to your son, I promise that he will never know that Eric is his step brother, plea-se” Vivian responded in tears but Chief Okoh hushed her up.
“Never, that’s an abomination, I will never allow you get married to my first son, never!, if you don’t leave my son, I will destroy you” Chief Okoh threatened before he hanged up.
Vivian bur-st into uncontrollably tears.
“Lord, this is so unfair, all I ever wanted was to go to the University, graduate and become a medical doctor and get my mother and siblings out of poverty but here I am, I’m an educated failure, my siblings who are not as educated as myself are doing very well for themselves, why did I allow chief Okoh to mess up my life. Martin loves me so much and he doesn’t deserve what is happening, oh Martin….” Vivian entered still in tears.
Because of the too many controversies, Martin was f0rç£d to postpone the wedding.
“My love, I have given my parents one month utimatum to accept you as their daughter in-law, after one month, if they don’t come to accept our love, then we will get married secretly” Martin had told Vivian and she nodded speechlessly, she felt miserable and restless for hiding the truth.
All throu-gh many nights, sleep refused to pay Vivian a visit as she kept tossing back and forth; thinking of the battles that were ahead of her to fight. It wasn’t going to be easy for Vivian to let go of Martin.
A month later, Vivian decided to come clean, she had decided to pay Martin a visit and reveal the whole truth to him.
Her mother had as-sured her, that it was the right thing to do
“If he leaves, then he was never meant to be your husband, what will be, will be. I don’t think getting married to Martin is right after everything that happened between you and his father” Vivian’s mother had told her.
But when Vivian arrived Martin’s house, he had c@m£ up with an amazing plan instead or so she thought. The plan threw Vivian off balance as she failed in her mission to reveal her truth to Martin.
“My love, I’m a man and I know what I want, I want you and I want to marry you with or without my parent’s approval, in few weeks, I will be going on a business trip to Australia and I think you should come along with me…but before we go to Australia, we will get married secretly… I want you to have our baby in Australia….that’s if you accept…… My parents will not have any other option but to accept you as their daughter in-law”
Vivian didn’t utter a word, she was so confused, “Martin’s plan seem to be a good one, I will not have to be afraid of what Chief Okoh might do to me, I Can’t leave Martin, I love him so much” Vivian had thought
In few minutes, Martin was elated when Vivian agreed and accepted his plan.
They both seemed to love the plan as they were so excited that they will soon be married to each other.
