Lovane looked back at regular intervals as she ran. She feared she was been followed. She ran into an arcade and st©pped running as she tried catching her breath.
“I made it” Lovane smiled as she p@n-ted and t©uçhed the n£¢klace in her pocket
⏪⏪ FLASHBACK ⏪⏪
EARLIER IN THE MORNING
Lovane monito-red Melvin till he was out of his room then she snuck into his room. She locked the door and started searching his room for the n£¢klace. She searched the che-st of drawers and found the n£¢klace in one of the drawers. Lovane took the n£¢klace with a wi-de grin then gr@bb£d a coat that was on the hanger. Melvin was in the kitchen when she climbe-d down the stairs. She wore the coat and shoved the n£¢klace into the pocket and rushed out of the mansion unnoticed. She ran to the gate and unlocked it though it was difficult at first. Lovane took to her heels, having no place to go, all she thought at that moment was ‘RUN’.
Melvin fries eggs and toasted some bre-ads then served them on the dining table along with a teapot. He was still setting the table when his phone ran. He checked the caller ID and it was Kyle calling.
📱… what’s wrong Kyle? you sound tensed…you want it?.. you should’ve listened to me. Love us stronger than you think… we’ll meet at work….
Melvin dropped the phone and bur-st into laughter. “Thought he said he doesn’t care”
He climbe-d up to his room to get the n£¢klace and call Lovane down Fri breakfast.
“I kept it here last night. Am sure if it” he soliloquises when he couldn’t find the n£¢klace in the che-st of drawers. He searched everywhere nook and cranny of his room but couldn’t find the n£¢klace.
The first person he suspected was ‘Lovane’.
Melvin ran to her room but she wasn’t there.
“Lovane?! Lovane?!”he searched the en suite, the closet, he even ended up searching the drawers but couldn’t find her.
“Lovane?!” Melvin ran down the stairs, his phone was ringing but he ignored it. He searched everywhere in the mansion but didn’t find Lovane. He ran outside to the gate and it was wi-de open.
“She left”
Melvin locked the gate and ran back inside. His instincts told him to search the streets for her. He couldn’t have gone far. But on a second thought, he placed a call to his informant.
📱… am searching for a girl… no, someone else… she stole me n£¢klace…Lovane… I don’t know… Thank you, I’ll s£nd her picture and a picture of the n£¢klace… okay
Melvin ended the call and quic-kly s£nt a picture of Lovane and the n£¢klace.

Lovane hid at a corner in the arcade and took out her shellophone. She opened it and Coral appeared shortly.
“Mother?!”
“Lovane dear, how’re you?”
“am fine mother. We made it”
“did you get the n£¢klace?”
“yes”
“where is it?
Lovane brou-ght out the n£¢klace from her pocket and raised it to the shellophone.
“see”
“Finally!”
“but there’s a problem mother”
“what problem?”
“I don’t know my way back home”
“I’ll talk to Anais then we’ll find a way to bring you back home”
“Hurry mother”
“I will but make are you don’t wear the n£¢klace”
“why?”
“just don’t wear it”
“Alright mother”
“Take care of yourself”
The shellophone closed and Lovane shoved it j to her pocket. She stared at the n£¢klace for a while.
“Why doesn’t she want to wear it?” Lovane wondered enviously
“she wants to rule alone” a voice said in her head
Lovane scoffed and proceeded to wear the n£¢klace but it was fastened. She asked herself in frustration “There’s no use in stealing it. Whoever fastened it is the only one who can unfasten it”
Lovane was furious, she wasted her time for nothing.
“Can I be of help?” a man asked her
“am trying to unfasten this” she showed him the n£¢klace
The man took the n£¢klace and looked at her. “I know someone who is good with unfastening things. I could take you to him”
“I’d be grateful”
“follow me”
Lovane followed the man to his car that was parked close by. He opened the door to the pas-s£nger seat and held it open for her to get in. He slammed the door shut when she got in then entered the driver’s seat.
“Am Josh by the way” he introduced himself as he turned on the ignition
“Lovane”
He nodded with a smile and drove off. Lovane gazed out throu-gh the window as she thought randomly. Lovane felt Josh cover her nose with a handkerchief. She struggled to free herself but his grip was firm. Lovane suddenly started feeling dizzy and pas-sed out.
LATER….
Lovane opened her eyes sluggishly and realized she was lying on a be-d. She looked around and saw Melvin sitting on a chair beside her. Lovane got up with a start “what am I doing here?”
Melvin chuckled “One impossible thing is, running away from me”
Lovane’s heart started racing as she looked around for Josh. He was with the n£¢klace.
“who brou-ght me here?” she asked
“Does that matter?” Melvin replied with a question and got up “why did you steal the n£¢klace?” he asked
“I didn’t”
“seriously? you’re still lying?”
“I didn’t steal it. I took what’s rightfully mine”
“you’re getting yourself into more complicated issues. Why did you steal the n£¢klace?”
“where is the n£¢klace?”
Melvin scoffed “it’s with the rightful owner”
“don’t tell me you have it back to Kyle”
Melvin shrugged “then I won’t”
“why did you have to give it to him?” Lovane yelled “we could’ve worked together”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about but I don’t care” Melvin yelled back “we’ll talk later” he walked out

“Am tired” Yasmine drawled
“we’re almost there. I see a building in sight. Just hang on” Leo encouraged
Océane held Yasmine as they walked towards the building.
“It’s a street” Yasmine shouted excitedly when they got near the building. There were other buildings around that Lee to a street.
“I recognize this street” Leo said “my ap@rtment isn’t far from here”
They walked a short distance and got to an ap@rtment building. Leo led them up the stairs till they got to the third floor. He brou-ght out his key from where he hid it at a corner then inser-ted one of the keys in the key hole. Leo turned the key then tried the door knob and the door opened.
“Finally!” Yasmine breathed out in relief as they walked into Leo’s ap@rtment
“I’ve got an extra room where you both can stay” Leo said as he led them to one of the rooms “this would do” he tried the door knob and the door opened
“Thanks a lot” Océane and Yasmine chorused
“you don’t have to thank me” Leo said with a smile then walked back to the living room. He turned on the hi-fi system and walked into one of the rooms.
Leo had prepared the room for Elsa if she ever shoes up, though he knew it was impossible for a dead person to show up. Elsa’s things were in the room, including their pictures. The room had served as a memory of Elsa.
He picked up a picture of Elsa from the dressing table “our daughter is here” he said to the picture “she’s grown up now and she’s as beautiful as you. You should come see her” Leo heaved a de-ep sigh then replaced the picture on the table and walked to the wardrobe. He had kept Elsa’s clothes there. Leo took two of Elsa’s go-wns and walked out of the room.
He headed to the room Océane and Yasmine were staying then knocked on the door. Yasmine opened almost immediately and Leo gave her the go-wns.
“They’re for the two of you” he said as she collected the go-wns
“how did you manage to get the go-wns?” Océane asked popping her head from the doorway
“They belonged to your mother”
Océane smiled “thanks”
They shut the door and walked to the be-d.
“They’re beautiful” Yasmine said admiringly
“yea. I guess so” Océane chose the white go-wn while Yasmine chose the pink go-wn
They had a shower and put on the go-wns.
“Am neat again” Yasmine said and sat on the dressing mirror. She climbe-d her hair and packed it up in a ponytail.
“How did you manage to get away from those men?” Yasmine asked when she was done and joined Océane on the be-d
“I really don’t know. All I remember is those men dragging me to a boat then they stabbe-d me and threw me into the water. I don’t know what happened next but I woke up the next day to find myself lying on the gras-s with Kyle beside me”
“wow! That was a ro-mantic rescue”
“Not really. Kyle said I was washed ashore”
“it’s a good thing you both are okay. But how did you end up with your father? Where’s Kyle?”
“His mother doesn’t want us together so she kicked me out and I got lost. But thanks to him, am alright”
“By ‘him’, you mean your father?”
“it’s ha-rd calling him father”
“why?”
Océane went ahead to narrate everything about her life to Yasmine.
“wow! so you reunited?”
“you can say so” Océane said with a shrug and asked “what happened at the island when those men took me away?”
Yasmine heaved a de-ep sigh and her countenance changed “I hate to remember it”
“was it that bad?”
Yasmine nodded
“am sorry”
“it was never your fault” Yasmine wiped the tears that were rolling down her cheeks “They killed Nelson”
“what?”
“All the guys were killed, including most of the girls. Then I was taken hostage along with Tasha, Recheal, and Sarah, buy we went throu-gh hell… ” Yasmine observed a brief pause then went on “we were gang R@p£d every single day by those men. Tasha and Sarah couldn’t survive the pain, they died after three days and it was Sarah and I were left. The pain got unbearable and I planned an escape with Sarah. On that fateful night, we escaped from the sh!pand dove into the water. I tried to sustain Sarah in the water buy I was too weak and so was she. Sarah drowned, leaving me behind….” Yasmine chocked on her tears
“am sorry” Océane apologized amidst tears
“I found my way out of the water and found that cave. I’ve been there ever since then Yasmine sobbe-d
“This was all my fault. I always bring bad luck”
“don’t think you’re jinxed”
“Everywhere I go, bad thing always happen”
“and they all happen for a reason”
Océane sighed “I hate me life”
“you shouldn’t” Yasmine said drying her tears
“now tell me about you and Kyle”
“well….”
“well?” Yasmine chuckled
“I don’t know”
“yea right? Do you plan on going back?”
“just to get the n£¢klace”
“what n£¢klace?”
Océane told Yasmine everything about the n£¢klace and why she was on land.
“so you’ll be leaving when you get the n£¢klace?” Yasmine asked when Océane was done
“I have to, Lise doesn’t want me around her son and I don’t want to risk Adele’s job. And my dad doesn’t want a human for me either”
“so you’re just going to back out?”
“what else am I gonna do? Fight?”
“of course” Yasmine snapped “if Nelson was still alive today, I would’ve fought to be with him. There’s nothing wrong with a human falling in love with a mermaid”
Océane stared at her thoughtfully “I’d be ma-king the same mistake”
“it’s not a mistake and even if it is, I don’t mind ma-king it all over and all over again. As long as he loves me” Yasmine stated
Leo who had been eavesdropping on them walked out to the living room. He reduced the volume of the hi-fi and sat on the couch, thinking of what he had heard.
Océane was alre-ady in love with a human.
“I can’t let her make the same mistake” he soliloquises as he remembered 21 years ago “she’s going to end up like I and Elsa. It’s impossible for her to have a human baby unless the bond is broken” he fell back in the couch “and breaking the bond means…. ”
