Thun-der’s phone rang. “Helo,why are you wasting our time? ……..What for?……We are coming right away”He dropped the phone and beckoned on two of his members to follow him while Chike stayed behind to watch over Angela who was tied hands and legs. As soon as they left,Angela started another round of pleading. Her eyes were almost empty from all the tears she cried. Chike advised her to save her strength and keep quiet for her own good before she pushes him to do what she wouldn’t like.This time,he spoke with a calm voice which suprisingly kept her quiet.It wasn’t the threat that kept her quiet but the voice.Yes,that voice sounded familiar.She examined his face with great effort in that dark of the night.
“Chike.One in town.The son of the soil”She called him.A ray of hope flashing in. Chike was startled.He turned slowly to take a closer view of this lady who knew him that well.That was the name his friends called him back then in school. He went closer and squ-atted opposite her,looking into her eyes. “Chike wey dey run things.Chike wey things no dey run”Angela suprised him again.That was his slogan then;”i run things.things no dey run me” “Chike it’s me Angela,your own paddy.Your next door neighbour”She said finally to Chike who was alre-ady turning his face away,slowly. He took few steps backwards and peeped out to see if his members were coming back.He was indeed troubled.Angela had been a good friend to her back in school.She was like a sister to him.Helping him with even the cookings,for he could ba-rely boil yam. She helped him during exams to make sure he pas-sed.He never re-ad his re-ads despite all Angela’s struggles to see that he made re-ading a habit. Most of all,Angela was a decent girl whom they all respected for who she was;caring and amicable. He lamented within him why this should happen now.He knew what they stands to loose if she gets away,and the worst p@rt of the story being that others will come after him. He looked at her again.She was in pains,she nee-ded help.He remembered the countless number of times she helped him selflessly.
The tears from her eyes affected him so much.This was the same girl that always tried to put smiles on his face.Not only on his face but on the faces on all the people. He had to act fast.He couldn’t leave her there to die.He looked around,without much ado,untied her ropes and started leading her out of the forest. It wasn’t up to four minutes they left the uncompleted building that a gunsh0t was heard in that direction.Angela inquired to know who s£nt them to kidnapp her but he refused revea-ling the person. Another gunsh0t was heard in there direction.Chike knew they were after them.He found a hidden place where he told Angela to stay while he hid somewhere else. He started hearing footsteps.They were running towards him.He kept still as they emerged.He saw them speed past him,heading to the exact place where Angela was hiding.Who knew if she had not urinated in her p@n-ties. He nee-ded no one to tell him that she would be found there.He thought very ha-rd to find a way of ma-king them change direction but couldn’t figure out any idea. He fired his riffle into the air and immediately,they dived into different directions,got up and charged towards him. He c@m£ out and told the he was looking for her. Thun-der c@m£ closer to him with anger written all over his face. “Do you expect me to cl@p for you? She gave you her b©dy and you swam in her.she use ur [email protected]?” “No chairmo.No be so.na piss i go piss.wen i come back i no see her again”Chike explained. “Guy u 4cu-p.Cheii!”Another one interjected. “Story for the gods”Thun-dered murmured as he pu-ll-ed the trigger on Chike,who didn’t even know when he brou-ght out the gun.He l@ydown and breathed his last. “Come on boys,lets find her” They zoomed off.Angela c@m£ out and fell on Chike.Crying,shouting and calling on him as if that would bring him back to life but unfortunately for her,her voice called them back again.She was kneeling beside Chike as she sighted them coming to devour her with great rage “Noooooooo………”
“Jeeeeesuusss”Angela sat up on her be-d.It was all a dream.A terrible dream.She was sweating profusely.Her eyes went to the
clock.It was 2:05am. David was not on the be-d. “Darling.Darling.Honey.Dave…..” She got down the be-d and started looking for him while calling his name. The sitting room was the first place she checked but he wasn’t there.She made for the kitchen only to find it empty.The visitors room was empty.Sonia’s room and the bathroom was the only place left. She heard a door ban-g. “Darling..”she called again.It was the bathroom door.She opened it and there he was.Bathing. “Honey,is there any problem? Why bathing by this time of the night?” “I just felt like.i will join you soon” “I had a bad dream.Finish up and come to be-d” Angela closed the door. David took a sigh of relief. “That was too close” Sonia couldn’t help but stare at the devil incarnate Ebere who flashed her teeth at several intervals in a wicked
smile.At times she expo-sed them like someone who brushed with omo,telling the whole world to see.To her,they were smiles of satifaction.Her revenge on Angela was almost at it’s cli-max. “I called you to discuss something important with you”Sonia opened up,bitterness written all over her. Ebere tilted her head to one side,stole another glance at her and said”I’m all ears” Sonia felt like strangling her to death with the bitterness and pain boiling in her. “Aren’t you done with me yet? Can’t you let me go in peace now? Haven’t i been slee-ping with your bestfriend’s husband as you wished?”Sonia asked. “What kind of a girl are you anyway? You saw a means inorder to get what you want and help your mother and you are rejecting it.I haven’t seen a case where a person spat out the sugar put in his mouth……….” “I’m pregnant for crying out loud.I’m pregnant”Sonia bur-sted in.Tears gathered in her eyes.br@vely,she blinked them back but de-ep inside she was crying out her heart. “Wow.great.that is what i want my dear.i am so happy.Get re-ady to become the new Mrs.David.Forget about Angela.I will take care of her.She must pay for what she did to me”Ebere stressed out. Sonia smiled for the first time and shook her head. “You claim to be a friend but you are an enemy.A betrayer…..”
“Don’t address me in such rude manners….” “I will.I will and i will.again,again and again”Sonia hauled,hitting her fist on the little side stool besides her,drawing the attention of people.”I think its high time we all take responsibilities for our crimes.I am re-ady to accept mine.Get re-ady to accept yours.I’m terminating this pregnancy.Thanks for ruining my life.Soon,i will call it quits with this job and face whatever comes my way.I think its better that way.You have used me enough trying to destroy a union.If i go to jail,so be it.If mrs Angela kills me for betraying her trust by slee-ping with her husband day in,day out,i deserve it”She couldn’t fight the tears anymore as they finally found their way down her cheeks but she was determined.She stood up to leave. “Maybe you nee-d to sleep to regain your s-en-ses”Ebere said as the watched the furious Sonia storm out of her pres£nce. Immediately Sonia left,Ebere’s phone rang.It was Angela. “Heloo,how is my Angel doing?”She spoke into the phone. “B.B i’m fine.There is this red dress.I don’t know if you would like it”Angela replied. “You know the kind of dress i cherish”Ebere giggled. “Sure.This is one of them”They laughed over the phone. Since Angela got married,she never forgot Ebere whenever she went to buy dresses and shoes.Even colourful handbags.
***** 7.45pm Angela was in the sitting room.David was yet to return from work.Sonia noticed she was not in her happy mood.She went up to her and sat by her side. “Aunty,i hope there is no problem”She asked.Angela did not say anything.She called out to her the second time,startling Angela who was far away in thoughts. “Aunty what is the problem?”She asked again. Angela heaved. “Just today,a woman caught her best friend with her husband on the be-d in a h0tel.Someone who saw them move into the h0tel alerted her.She went with a knife and stabbe-d her friend who died instantly.Now the poor woman is in police custody.I pity her”She narrated. Sonia was taken aback by the story.She thought for a while. “That is a bad incident.But Aunty,tell me if you were the woman what would you have done?”Sonia asked carefully. Angela smiled and shook her head. “My husband.No no.I can even look for a gun.And surely i must shoot that friend of mine.I dont care what happens next”Angela answered confidently,instilling enormous fears on Sonia whom it took great effort to hide the fears. “She can never get away with it.I must teach her the lesson of her life.I can share anything with anyb©dy else but not my husband”Angela added further. Sonia only nodded as Angela said those words and she knew the kind lady meant every bit of her words
1:20pm Sonia’s mother’s place Ebere’s voice was calm as she tried to get the old woman to see reasons to agree to her opinions.She knew Sonia could be serious with her words but she was so bent on getting her revenge against Angela whom she believed was the reason why Mike,her rich fiancee broke up with her few days to their wedding.That incident surely left her with pains.de-ep inner pains which time can never heal.It left her a shattered woman with all the memories that refused to let her be.How she loved him with all her heart.How she surrendered her all to him.How she gave all of herself to him.It was really heartbreaking.She found it ha-rd to console herself and move on with life whenever that instincts of hers tell her it was Angela’s handwork. On the other hand,she vowed to destroy her happy marriage to make her feel the pain too. Ebere un-derstood perfectly that ma-king Sonia go to jail would be of no benefit to her but she was re-ady to do it if the poor girl refused to [email protected] to teach her that she does anything she said she would do. “I’m suprised at Sonia your
daughter.How could she have gotten this kind of opportunity of becoming rich overnight and she’s trying to throw it away?”She feigned with a little anger and a coloured face. “What do you mean? Isn’t she doing what you said?”The confused woman asked. “Isn’t now the best time for her to stand strong and be happy? She is pregnant and she is threatening to call it quits with everything.Could you imagine she plainly told me she would terminate the pregnancy? “She asked. A kind of smile pla-yed on the poor woman.She seemed lost.
“You mean…..she told you she’s pregnant? Why haven’t she told me? What is even wrong with that girl?”She rained endless questions on Ebere who was yet to disclose her main mission for coming over. 1:35pm that same day Angela’s home Sonia heard David’s car hunk in the compound.She was taking some rest after washing the clothes she was supposed to wash the day before.They really gave her a tough time,especially David’s ha-rd jeans trou-sers which her soft hands always found so ha-rd to deal with. She peeped out throu-gh the window and watched him alight from the car. It was unusual,seeing him at home by that time of the day.Sonia wondered what could be wrong. “Did he forget anything?”She asked her troubled self. David’s knock c@m£ on the door impatiently.Sonia did not hesitate in opening the door for him. David quic-kly entered and closed the door behind him immediately,drew Sonia close and wra-pped hisl-ips over hers,interrupting her greeting. Sonia’s heart throbbe-d mightily as he k!$$£d and su-cked herl-ips hungrily as if his life depended on it.She was to weak to st©p him or even say anything as he fired on eagerly,exploring almost every reachable p@rt of her with his demanding care-sses.She knew without being told that it was the charm at work. With great effort,she pu-ll-ed him back,holding his palms ti-ghtly,restraining them from ma-king those dangerous moves.
“plea-se sir just st©p.plea-se this is dangerous.Lets just st©p all these”Sonia pleaded in despair knowing she was only wasting her saliva.He was yearning for her like someone being intoxicated with wine.Of course he was intoxicated.The charms really got him of his wits that he no longer cared if Angela caught them together. “Sonia,i love you.i nee-d you.i just dont think i can survive without you”He said and overpowered her again with his strenght,this time,taking Sonia off the ground in his arms like a baby into the be-droom. Sonia knew she had to do something fast to end all these as soon as possible.Her greatest fear and only prayer at that moment was that Angela should not by any means show up.If it happens,only heaven knows what the outcome would be. She had thought of running away to another country to start her life anew without the police having to find her for killing someb©dy but there was no money.Besides,she never had the heart to leave her harsh and ungrateful mother alone.They would hold her if she dissappears.
Sonia’s mother’s place “I have a plan.A perfect plan which will see your daughter take over as David’s new wife”Ebere whispered to Sonia’s mother. She nodded,drawing close.That was all she wanted to see.To see sonia take over that rich man so that she would be s£nding her money on regular basis. “But what about the man’s wife.What do we do about her?”She asked. “I c@m£ prepared.I have here with me some of her pictures,old identity card before she got married and some other things that belonged to her.There is one powerful baba who will help us get rid of her.Once we show him these things,whatever he tells us to do,we would do it.All we want is to see that Angela leaves that house and never return for good.The baba will also make Sonia pl@yalong with ease”Ebere was convincing with her words. She got the greedy woman this time whose face lit up.She has seen the perfect opportunity to make Sonia supply her money all the time as if she was her employee. “We are going immediately”She as-sured Sonia and requested to see the pictures of this lady.Angela had come to see her with Sonia only once but she wasn’t able to get a better view of her because it was getting dark when they visited. She kept staring at Angela’s smiling face.Ebere handed her the identity card and some other laminated papers that contained vital informations about her. “Miss Angela C.Uwa. Hometown,Isseke in Ihiala local government area….Uwa.Isseke…”She st©pped and scanned the pictures again. “What is wrong?”Ebere who noticed something asked. She shifted uncomfortably in her chair,stared at the name again,the pictures and her details again. “Tell me all you know about this lady”She demanded in a low voice. “We used to be good friends back in school but….” “That is not what i mean.Tell me do you know her parents well?”She interrupted Ebere. “Of course i do.Her father is the famous Chief livinus Uwa and her mother,emmm,i think,yes..Mrs Ngozi obidiya Uwa”Ebere who was beginning to feel uncomfortable with her questions replied. “What? Are you serious?”She asked,fear gripping her. Ebere kept quiet and observed her for sometime,wondering what was wrong with her,and as if she got the signal,she pla-yed down those looks from Ebere and told her a rooster and bull story to make any rising thought in her about the way she suddenly started asking questions to die down. “I think tomorrow or next would be perfect for this journey”She added.Ebere stood up,gave her a detecting look and left without mincing any word. “Angela? The daughter of Livinus Uwa? Ngozi’s daughter? Soniaaaaaa”She wept.
1:45pm,That Same Day Ebere headed straight to the ‘baba’s’ place as she left Sonia’s mother. From what she observed,the old woman may not be willing to go with her the next day as she suggested,for it baffled her how she suddenly postponed it after alre-ady saying they must go immediately.Moreover,the way she reacted when she heard whom Angela’s parents were,gave her great cause for concern. Could there be something she knew,which she concealed from her? Many questions flashed throu-gh her mind as she sat at the back of the taxi,swaying to the tune of the gallop from the pot-holes on the bad road,ma-king her totally uncomfortable.O n a normal ocas-sion,she ought to have barked at the driver to slow down but instead,she jeered at the driver to add more speed to the tyres.She just wished she could fly to her destination immediately.
She was re-ady to finish what she started;to make sure Angela lose her marriage completely and if possible,her life.She blessed the day Angela whispered it into her ears that she wanted a maid. When the taxi finally c@m£ to a halt,she paid the driver,looked at both side of the road as it to make sure nob©dy saw her before di-ving into the bush.The ‘baba’s place was not ha-rd to locate.Who knows how many times she had come to him for help. She re-moved her footwears and stood before the great shrine.Nob©dy was there but the eyes and the glory of the deity were believed to have watched and protected the place. She looked around the shrine,bundles of money,pictures of people and other personal items belonging to people were all over the place. The red clothes tied everywhere,the large mirror and the scary faces of the gods made the shrine a horrible sight to behold. “The eyes of the gods.The great one.Your humble daughter is here”Ebere spoke out with her head bowed low.She remained calm and quiet for sometime.Soon,the sound of the great ‘Dibia’ could be heard emerging from nowhere,breaking the silence “What troubles you my daughter?”He asked as he went for a seat. “Great one,my heart is heavy.Your daughter is getting older by the day.Had it been i got married to mike,by now i would be seeing my children,pla-ying and calling me mummy.Ever since then,no man has ever said anything about marriage to me.Despite all i do for them”Ebere sobbe-d as she opened her handbag and brou-ght out Angela’s pictures and do¢v-ments. “Great one.I….” “Hold your peace.The great one has re-ad your mind.You want me to make her husband irresistible to her maid and at the same time,wipe her out from the face of the earth”The old man,whose teeth has turned brown,with chalk circled around his eyes,said,looking into a little calabash murmuring some incantations. “Yes.yes great one.Yes”She responded nodding. The old man smiled and pointed to a corner inside the shrine. “Go there and drop something for the gods”he said as he stood up and went before the mirror.He stood before it and started ma-king some incantations. “Look here young woman”he ordered Ebere,pointing at the mirror. Ebere’s eyes went to the mirror.She almost fell down out of shock.She couldn’t believe monitoring someone with mirror can be possible but in that mirror was Sonia and David.
Sonia was on be-d while David was dressing up to hurry out. She glanced at her wristwatch it was 2pm.David should be at work by this time.she smiled. The ‘Dibia’ murmured something and sprinkled some water on the mirror.Ebere could see Sonia shiver as a result of that.Sonia felt something enter her b©dy as she screamed out David’s name. The dibia waved his hand across the mirror and everything faded. “That charm will desert her whenever they are caught together.As for the woman you want dead,organise boys to kidnap her right away.She must be brou-ght here today”He instructed 2.05pm that same day David was alre-ady dressed up.Sonia only watched him weakly.She couldn’t explain what she felt all over her b©dy few minutes ago but she felt it.She felt the shock and the awe that invaded her. “Are you going out?”She suddenly asked. “Of course i am.I nee-d to get back to the office”he replied as he hurried to the door.Sonia ran up and help him ti-ght begging him to stay with her a little longer. “I cant stay here all alone”She pleaded,c@r£ss!nghim as she embr@ced him ti-ghtly. “Why not spend more time with me?”She muttered as she held him speechless with her k!sses.
David responded to all her moves.She was the reason why he left his office when he couldn’t bear the longing de-sire for her any longer.But they alre-ady have had a little good time,he thought,some more may not be bad. He su-cked hungrily at herl-ips,while his hands sought for her b0ss0ms.Sonia just couldn’t un-derstand what was happening. This was something she has sworn to put an end to,but now and again,she couldn’t bear this man walking out without satisfying her Sekxual urge. She worked on his shi-t,carefully un-bu-ttoning it.

On getting to the compound,she saw her husbands car parked there.She wondered what he might be doing at home.He should be in the office.She gently opened the door and surveyed the parlour.Nob©dy was there but on the floor a cloth was lying them.She picked it up and examined it.It was the t©p Sonia was wearing in the morning. She held her aching head. “I hope its not what i’m thinking”She soliloquized as she made into the be-droom quietly. On approaching there,she paused to examined what she was hearing.She could hear soft m0@n s from the be-droom. She barged into the room immediately,almost slumping at the sight she beheld.She felt her world crashing.Right before her was her dear husband on the be-d with Sonia.They were not even aware of her pres£nce. “David!”She screamed
