•••••••••••••••••••• Violet ••••••••••••••••••••

I sluggishly went to answer the door, dad stayed back at England while he s£nt me home. He said he was returning, he had been acting cold since Iris was chos£n. I always knew I should have killed her when I had the chance, I knew dad should have just thrown her over a bridge or something that would claim her life. Now, she didn’t just take my dream of becoming the successor, she took Hans away from me. I had been crying since I returned home, my dreams had been tarnished, trampled on. Okay, let her take the wealth, let me just have Hans to myself. If I lose the first wealth, I won’t miss the second one. Hans was the heir to the Kendrick Empire, his great great great grandmother Meghan Blues willed all her wealth to him. Can you imagine? Blue Sea Enterprise and K-Corp, that was a hvge deal. It was also rumoured that his father’s mother who was from a very wealthy family in France recognised him as their first grandson since most of the sons died, few useless, few not even interested in their lines of business and they never give their wealth to daughters. It was rumoured that he might be the heir as well. Even if the Kendrick dynas-ty is divided equally between both brothers, Hans would still have more than enough.

Can you see all I would miss?

Yes, I love him, but I also love his money and future fame. Hans was also a gentleman, it’s not everyday you see a guy like him, really rare. I didn’t care too much about Tobias’ wealth, but I certainly won’t give up Hans for that mad woman.

‘Violet, I’m home!’ Dad shouted. I g@sped, throwing the spoon in my hand away. I had been so lost in thought I forgot I was struggling to eat lunch. I ran out to meet him with a smile, he must have a plan to destroy Iris. I however missed my footing and crumbled to the floor when I saw her standing there with an innocent smile. My chin crashed on the tiles, ma-king my teeth cut de-ep into my ton-gue. My jaw and teeth would definitely ache for days.

‘Oh Violet honey, are you alright?’ The voice of the witch asked worriedly. She tried to help me up but I snatched my hands away from hers and stood up furiously.

‘What are you doing here?!’ I turned to dad. ‘What is she doing in our house?!’

‘Iris, you are bleeding, I’ll get the…’

‘I don’t nee-d your help!’ I flared at her. She redrew her hand, her eyes flashing with genuine concern. ‘Get out of my house!’

‘Violet, maybe you can shout later, your jaw must be hurting…’

‘Dad! Do something!’

‘Violet, Iris will be staying with us from now on, she is my daughter as much as you are.’ Dad said emotionlessly. My jaw dropped, my eyes flying wi-de open. I knew dad was selfish but never knew it was to this extent. Iris’ eyes ha-rd ened after he said that, I could see the res£ntment in her eyes.

She wasn’t here to unite but to destroy.

‘Dad, you can’t trust her, she is evil.’ I cried.

‘Evil?’ She laughed dryly. ‘Evil you say? Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and see who the real darkness really is? You are a witch Violet, a bitter sad wicked witch. You made my darling parents abandon me, left me to die and struggle for survival. And the funniest thing is that seeing you bleed right now makes me realize that I still love you. Pitiful isn’t it?’ She shook her head with self pity. ‘I’m not here for you but for dad, the only parent I have left. Dad, can I go to my room? Do I have one here?’

‘Of course, I reserved one for you, called a maid to re-ady it. I’ll take you there.’ Dad said with a smile. I rolled my eyes to Iris’s bags. He took the bags and led her to the corridor. Iris spared me a disgusted look before disappearing into the corridor.

I couldn’t do anything but to run to the garden and cry. I stayed there for four hours, two crying and two mapping out my plans to kill Iris once and for all. I walked to the kitchen after having a maid dress my wound, I nee-ded to get some water, my throat was dry and eyes swollen and heavy. The maids didn’t live with us, they went back home everyday. The sweet smell of a delicacy caught my attention, my ton-gue salivated immediately. I walked into the kitchen and saw Iris cooking as she danced, rolling her h!ps and stirring the pot of what she was cooking. I glanced at the kitchen knives, just perfect opportunity. Her ears were blocked, too good of an opportunity.

I ti-ptoed to the open drawer where the knives were kept and quietly picked up a small knife. I ti-ptoed to her back, she still hadn’t notice. I sm-irked and lifted the knife to deliver the plunge to her skull.

‘Before you foolishly sign your death certificate,’ she spoke, ma-king my hand freeze in the air in shock. ‘You might want to rethink your strategy. In the past, all your deed were covered up by Grandpappy, you were saved because of him because he thought he had a use for you. Now imagine me, Hildegarde Syris McMillan being found dead in your house just as I moved here. Who would cover it up for you? Him? You have to also remember that I am betrothed to Hans, he won’t let that slide easily and of course,’ she raised her spoon and waved it. ‘I’m national property. I alre-ady signed a paper with a persecutor that if anything should happen to me, you and your father should be held responsible. Hope you know what that means?’ I gulped. ‘Now drop the knife kitten, your claws aren’t sharpened yet.’

I defeatedly dropped the knife to the floor, feeling helpless. ‘I will still find a way.’

‘To do that, you nee-d a bigger sword than mine darling, let’s weigh the scale shall we?’ Iris spun around with a giddy smile, posing with her spoon up in the air right beside her face. ‘I’m freakin’ rich, like bloody bastard wealthy and you are just rich. I have royal backup you don’t. I am d@t!ngthe sole heir of K-Corp, Blue Sea and maybe even The and Sinclair’s and what else? Oh yes, I’m better than you in both beauty, s-en-se, character and others. For the longest time I thought everyone hated me, they did so I believed that being you would help but they only hated me more because I was you. Nob©dy likes you Violet, not even Hans.’

‘He loves me! If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have sle-pt with me!’

‘And yet when you were busy giving him your b©dy in hopes of him to loving you, he was thinking about me. Hi ohene ome on+233544 to be added to story headquarters room for more stories. Wasn’t he m0@n ing a girl’s name? My name?’ She laughed. ‘You are so cheap Violet, do you wanna know what Hans thinks about you? It’s not pretty.’

‘Shut up,’ I snapped. ‘Just shut up!’

She sm-irked slyly. ‘Does it bother you that I am the girlfriend he is so keen on? Does it bother you to know that Hans loved me before I bec@m£ Hilde? He even helped me know my origin. Does it bother you that a day after I was revealed we spent it in his room ma-king up for lost times?’ She pouted tauntingly. ‘Oh Violet, he didn’t even mention your name, it was all me and me alone. Does it burn?’ My eyes welled up in tears. Her words were hurting me.

‘St©p it! St©p talking!’

‘Does it sting how father easily dejected you for me? How everyone is all Iris but no Violet? Does it bother you to know that I have Hans wra-pped around the same f!ngersyou once called filthy? Mm,’ she m0@n ed, tilting her head to the side cutely. ‘All your beauty, shape, pvzzyand all, none can ever get you to where I am today, not even as my handkerchief. Isn’t that pitiful Violet? The girl who had everything suddenly bec@m£ a nob©dy…’ She turned and turn the stove off. ‘I should thank you, none of these would have happened this way if you didn’t hate me. Thanks Violet, I love you for that.’

‘I will destroy…’

‘Me? Of course not,’ she said confidently as she walked to get some plates. ‘I didn’t just come here to ruin people, I c@m£ here to make sure you know exactly how I felt all these years. Being abandoned almost ruined my life Violet, do you think you can survive as a streetwise girl just to make enough money for your mother’s illness? Do you think it is easy living with the fact that your mother chose death over you?’ She clenched her fist in anger. ‘The moment I knew what was right from wrong, I started my struggle for survival, I started my journey of plea-sing you and everyone else.’ She sniffed, her back turned to me.

‘No one told you to be insane…’

‘No one told them to bear me!!!’ She roared, spinning around to face me. ‘I never asked to be sick! I never asked to have speech disorder! I knew I couldn’t talk, I was intelligent like my father, a real br@inac but I couldn’t speak. My nanny was cruel to me! She fed me only when she liked and for a baby I faced starvation, sometimes I didn’t even eat in a day but God kept me alive! I started washing dishes at two, sweeping my prison and caring for myself. All she did was receive the salary while I did all the work! Who do you think taught me how to re-ad and write? My stupid teacher who spent more time di-ving her dirty f!ngersand ton-gue into my immature and young ginch! I was just a kid!’ I flin-ched back in fear, she looked like someone who would stab me any minute from her. ‘That was the price I got for learning from my pri-vate l£sb!anteacher who loved children more than adult! I was lucky she didn’t do more than that, lucky I am not one of them.

What else was I made to experience? I was f0rç£d to maturity at such a tender age! Tell me Violet, when did you start washing clothes? Mine was at three. I also cooked for myself, also treated my own wounds. Who taught you how to slice a tomato? Can you even hold a knife for anything other than stabbing? No, you can’t. Survival instinct kicked in and I learnt how to do everything on my own. After I saw a movie where the little girl survived on her own, I decided I could do it too and that made me a survivor. You told my father, our father to throw me into a sea because you don’t like me, your own twin! You bullied me, abused me, hated me even when I loved you. I was left to die tied up in a basement where no one would hear my plea! If it wasn’t for Arlene, I would be dead! Though Arlene didn’t give me full attention, she was there for me for at least four years before everything was ruined. I bec@m£ the one providing for us as she was too sick, I was just ten when it started. She’s a fighter, have been fighting her illness for almost nine years now. Just like me that survived the unbelievable, she is still alive.

You haven’t worked a day in your life but I started working before you even knew how to lift a spoon to your mouth. You think you can kill me Violet? Ha! That’s how loud I laugh. There is a side to me not even Hans know, he had seen the weak side but the deadly side Joe made me be, no one has. I didn’t work my as-s out in the street to train myself in school, foot mom’s hospital bills just by working as a little sales girl, I have done more. If you think you can kill Violet,’ her eyes darkened deadly. ‘You have no idea what I did for a living, no idea at all. Don’t think you can step on my toes and get away with it because you are not the only venomous child our father bore. If you think you are a snake, then you haven’t meant the scorpion he bore yet… Heh,’ she chuckled and shook her head. ‘That is the one thing we have in common, the blood of that viper of a man runs throu-gh our veins, that makes us irresistible and undeniable killers, it is who we are. I don’t tend to bow to that idea, so don’t push me.’

‘Iris…’ I choked out.

‘Don’t,’ her eyes softened. ‘I made the food for you, you haven’t eaten and I can see how lean you have become. Dad says you like that, try to eat it even if it is from me. I might still end up ma-king you as miserable as I was, but that doesn’t mean I still don’t love you. Eat something so my conscience won’t murder me, I’m going to the hospital to check on my mother, tell your father that.’ Without another more word, she tossed the apron at the wall hanger and walked out with magnificent steps.

I didn’t know how I felt, hearing all she said made me feel guilty, I never treated my younger sister right. How could I when my parents constantly fed me with lies and bitterness? I closed my eyes as their words reverberated in my head, the words that buried me in hate and pride.

Violet, you must be perfect so the world will see you as perfect, or do you want to be like Iris?

Violet, don’t smile when you see that sister of yours or she might get friendly and corrupt you and your trainings.

Violet, did you s£nd candies to your sister! I told you that no other child in this family deserves good things except for you! Don’t you know that if she gets good things too your wealth will be divided?

Be better than Iris at all cost because she can outshine you and I want you to be perfect and better.

Who is the shiniest girl in this world Violet, you or who?

My mother told me all that and more, mostly yelling and advising me to strive to be better than Iris while my father always compared me to her.

All you do is make mistakes, Iris might be a lunatic but she is wiser.

Iris will never come home with this failure you call a result!

Why can’t you do this right?! Yesterday I told Iris to solve a statistical problem and she did it in five minutes. You have been struggling with this simple problem for ten days! Iris is just five and yet can solve it, why can’t you?!

If it wasn’t for Iris’ mental instability, I would have preferred her as the heiress. I’m sure if Tobias had seen her, he would have chos£n her immediately.

Why aren’t you the insane one Violet!

Those words, those words pushed me to be what I am today. Getting everything I want also added to it, I always get what I want. The moment I embr@ced who they wanted me to be, they loved me, they worsh!pped and even fought over me. I have worked all my life to gain it all, I can’t let her take everything. Since I can’t kill her as an enemy, I will ruin her as a friend. I opened my eyes with a determined sm-irk.

Game on Iris
