Evelyn wondered as she drove to Georgia’s house, she had gone to church after many years due to what the gynecologist told her, she smiled as she remembered how their conversation went but frowned again as she remembered that she was going to tell Ken to visit the hospital, she honked for the gateman to open the gate and she drove in to see her friend waiting outside for her.
“Evelyn, what took you so long?, I have been waiting for you” she said as she gave her a hvg.
“Am sorry G, I had to cook after I c@m£ back from church” she strotted into the house like she owned it.
“Wait, you went to church?, my friend went to church, unbelievable” she said behind her.
“I have decided to get closer to God, maybe he might be happy with me and bless me with the fruit of the wo-mb” she smiled as she picked an apple from a saucer on t©p of a stool beside the sofa she sat on.
“I have told you severally Eve, if God wants to bless you, it doesn’t matter if you go to church or not” she eyed her.
“I know, but let me be frequenting the house of God and see the changes” she smiled again.
“You are unusually happy today, what happened?, I know it is not just about you going to church, so spill it out alre-ady” Georgia snapped.
“I went to visit the gynecologist on Thursday” she said after clearing her throat.
“Oh yes, I totally forgot about him, yea, so what did he say is the problem?” Georgia asked decreasing the volume of the television.
“He said there is nothing wrong with me, there is a section he will start having with me and once he is done with the section, I will get pregnant and I won’t miscarry it” she said smiling wi-dely.
“Wow, that’s good news, I can’t wait to be a godmother” Georgia said pouting herl-ips.
“See this one ooo, godmother ko, spiritual mother ni, don’t go and get married, stay there and be waiting for godchild” Evelyn tea-sed laughing.
“Goat, because you have gotten married abi? Abeg do fast and give birth to my godchild jare” Georgia tea-sed back throwing a pillow at her.

“Am just worried G” She blurted all of a sudden.
“What is it again? You always have a way of spoiling happy moments” Georgia rolled her eyes.
“He told me to me to bring Ken as well For a test”
“And what is wrong with Ken going to the hospital?” she asked raising her brows.
“Block head, have you forgotten that he told me not to visit any doctor again concerning my problem” she sneered.
“You are incredible, with a good news like this, you are finding it ha-rd to tell your husband to visit the hospital, don’t you know that once you tell him about it, he would rush to the hospital happily” she hissed.
“I pray so” Evelyn concluded.

“Am not going to any hospital, I told you to forget about hospitals and doctors, focus on God and he will give you a baby, but you disobeyed me, am your husband Evelyn and I deserve some respect” Ken thun-dered.
“I had to visit him Ken, he is a new gynecologist and he might have a solution to my problem, that’s all” She muttered.
“Okay, now that you visited him, did he solve your problem for you? answer me, what were the things that he told you?” He shook her vigorously.
“He said he will have some sections with me and prescribe some drugs for me, and after that, I will get pregnant without having a miscarriage” she held her breath checking his face for any change of expression but his face remained blank.
“Wait, was that what he told you?, are you sure?” he asked letting go of her.
“Yes Ken, I will soon have a baby” she smiled as she ca-ressed her stomach.
“Don’t be too sure Eve, I mean, don’t raise your hopes high, am going to pay him a visit and speak with him as a man, but all the same, am happy for the good news but that doesn’t mean that you did well by disobeying me” he eyed her going to sit down.
“Am sorry Ken, am just desperate to have a baby” she replied going to sit beside him.
“It’s okay Eve, I will visit him on Monday, what did you say his name is again?” he asked.
“Doctor korede Benson” Evelyn smiled.

Ken sat in doctor Korede’s office waiting for the test result he had earlier to be re-ady, he looked round the office again and noticed few changes, the last time he c@m£ there was six months ago when his wife had her second to the last miscarriage. He was interrupted by korede’s entry.
“Mr Desmond, the result I have here shows that you don’t have any problem medically, you have all it takes to get a woman pregnant” he said pushing the result to him.
“My wife told me that you said you will have some sections with her, and with the prescription of some drugs and then she would get pregnant” Ken said looking at the young doctor very well.
“There are some things I will like to discuss with you as a man” doctor Korede sighed.
“Am all ears” Ken said supporting his jaw with his right hand.

“Ap@rt from you and your wife, who else is staying in your house?”
“No other person is staying in our house, why do you ask?” Ken twisted his face.
“Do you have any enemy of any kind?” he asked yet again.
“None that I know of, now can you tell me where you are heading to with your questions?” Ken twisted his face the more.
“when I ran a text on your wife, I found traces of cytotec in her b©dy, although it was ha-rd to detect because it has been long and there was nothing to hold it there in her b©dy” korede said extending the test result towards him.
“What is cytotec?” Ken asked confused.
“It is an ab-ortion pill, very harmful to the wo-mb, it ab-orts a pregnancy two minutes after consumption and the person bleeds for seven days or more depending on the type of b©dy she has and how far her pregnancy had gone” he said looking closely at Ken.
“But why will Evelyn take ab-ortion pill when she desperately nee-ds a baby” Ken said folding the piece of paper in his hand.
“I don’t think she took them, someone must have fed her with those drugs, I think there is someone out there that is not happy with your wife” he went to the shelf and brou-ght a big brown envelope and dropped it on the desk.
“Why did you say so?” Ken asked with a frown gracing his face.
“Take a look at this” he shifted the brown envelope to him.
“What is that?” Ken asked taking the envelope.
“That is the scan result” he replied.
“And what happened to it? ” Ken asked not comprehending the meaning of the result.
“Are you aware that your wife doesn’t have a wo-mb?” he asked checking to see his reaction.
“What ru-bbish are you talking about? How can she not have a wo-mb when she has been getting pregnant all these while?” Ken thun-dered.
“I think the last miscarriage she had, her wo-mb was re-moved without her knowledge” Korede sneezed. “and that explains the reason she hasn’t gotten pregnant again” he completed.
“And you lied to her?, why? Why didn’t you tell her the truth? You just gave her false hopes, you don’t know how happy she has been since she c@m£ to see you” Ken asked angrily.
“I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth, but I didn’t lie also, there are things that can still be done and you will have a baby in your house, all she has to do is to be pres£nt in the sections I want to start with her” he replied standing up again, went to the shelf and brou-ght a big book. “What I have in mind is in this catalogue, go home and study it with your wife and then let me know your decision” he handed him the book.

“Alright, I will tell her, thanks for your time, I will see you some other time” Ken hastily replied leaving the office.

Evelyn sang as she dressed up, she was starting her section with the gynecologist that same day, she walked to the drawer to pick her wrist watch, she saw a file that was spiral binded, she shifted it to pick her wrist watch but what was written on the file got her attention.
“GELAMAX food production company at Melford Okilo Road, Ekeki yenagoa Bayelsa state, awards a one year contract to bryaco Civil Engineering company for the erection of a two story building on the above mentioned address”.
She squinted her eyes, wasn’t it the new company her father and Ken were trying to set up in Bayelsa state, why was it bearing a different name from the one they have in port-harcourt, just then Ken entered the room and hvgged her from behind.
“You are looking beautiful my love” he said sniffing around her n£¢k.
“Ken, what is this?” she asked hovering the file in his face.
“That is the company we are setting up at yenagoa, I hope there is no problem?” Ken asked sweating.
“There is a problem Ken, why is it bearing a different name from our head office here in port-harcourt?” she asked placing her hand on her w@!st.
“Eeeeem” he scratched his head “yes, you will have to ask Dad, it was his idea and not mine” he completed finally smiling.
“You mean Dad used a different name for the same company, just in different states?, am going to talk to him but that will be later” she turned around and carried her hand bag, walking out on Ken.
Ken picked up his phone and placed a call to someone.
“Hello Dad, Evelyn found out about the different name we used for the new company” he said sitting down on the be-d.

“And what did you tell her?” the old man asked.
“I told her that it was your idea, she said she will talk to you” he raked his hair with his hand.
“I will handle her, just focus on other things” he concluded.

“Welcome Mrs Desmond, have a seat” korede said all smiles.
“Thanks doctor” Evelyn replied sitting down.
“So did you go throu-gh the catalogue with your husband ?” he asked folding his hands.
“What catalogue?” she asked getting confused.
“Didn’t he tell you the things I discussed with him” Korede asked opening his mouth in shock.
“No he didn’t tell me anything, he forgets things easily and coupled with the fact that he is busy with the new company he is setting up with my father at Bayelsa state, he is prone to forget, can you tell me what you guys talked about?” she said all at a time.
“Nothing much, we talked about the section am to start with you” he replied jotting something down on his jotter while nodding his head.
“Okay, what about the catalogue you mentioned earlier?”
“It is still related to the section we are having” korede replied not taking his gaze off the jotter.
“Alright, so can we start?” she asked hastily.
“How many miscarriages have you had since you got married?”
“Six”
“Which hospital did you visit when you had your last miscarriage?”
“This same hospital, it has been our family hospital since I got married, I don’t know why Ken choosed it though”
“Which doctor attended to you during your last miscarriage?”
“Doctor Michael, the one you replaced”
“Alright Mrs Desmond, that will be all for today, we will move to another stage when you come on Thursday” he said after he finished writing on his jotter.

“Alright doctor, I will be here on Thursday, take care” Evelyn said with a smile.
As soon as she left, Korede placed a call to Mr Humphrey.
“Korede, have you handled things over there or is there a nee-d for me to come back?” The man asked groggily.
“Sir, there are many nee-ds for you to come back, are you aware that Evelyn’s husband and her father are setting up a new company at Bayelsa state?” he asked letting out a breath.

“No, am not aware, no one told me” he replied getting alarmed.
“Sir I have a suspect alre-ady, just come back to Nigeria, I can’t do it all alone”

“I will take the next available flight to Nigeria tomorrow, get an ap@rtment and a car re-ady for me, it is time to meet Mr Thomas” he concluded.

Evelyn went to her father’s house in anger, the more she thought about the different name used for the new company, the more she believed that it was coned out from two people’s name, she entered the sitting room, sat down on the sofa while calling her mom ma-king her pres£nce known, but she got no response, she decided to head to her father’s study, that was the only place her father would be, she got to the study and found no one there, she decided to look around, books were heaped at every corner, she saw a portrait of her hung on the wall, she smiled c@r£ss!ngher portrait, just then she heard a creaking sound and her portrait caved in giving her a view of an inner room, her eyes bulged as she surprisingly looked on, her portrait had been hanging on a door all those times? She walked into the room, and saw something that turned her stomach.
In the room, she saw different portraits of Ken, “her husband” hung on every p@rt of the wall, she turned to her left and saw an old faded picture of a smaller Ken, her father, and her mother, they all wore a priceless smile on their faces, another portrait of Ken with a lady and three children gazed back at her. She noticed another portrait that was kept separately, she moved towards it, uncovered it, on it was Ken, the same woman she saw earlier, a little boy of about 4 years and her father stood just beside the boy, the kid wore a graduation go-wn, he must have been graduating from nursery school.
“What is all these?” she shouted.
“Evelyn, what are you doing in here?” Mr Thomas asked.
“Dad what is the meaning of all these portraits” she asked turning around.
“Oh that?, that woman there is Ken’s younger sister and her son, you know they have no father, so I stood in place of their Dad” he concluded covering the portrait.
“Sister?, I thought Ken doesn’t have a sister?”
“I just found out too”
“what about this, if am not mistaken, this is Ken’s younger version, and your dressing here with mom shows that this picture was taken a long time ago, did you alre-ady know who Ken was before telling me to marry him?” she thun-dered.
“Evelyn calm down, you are boiling” he said going to t©uçh her.
“Don’t tell me to calm down Dad, answer my question” she shouted.
“Okay, fine, yes, I knew him before you got married to him” he shouted back.

“Oh my god, Mr Humphrey, when did you get back to Nigeria?” doctor Swavey said standing on his feet.

“I c@m£ back just yesterday, how has it been?” he asked.
“I have been fine, to what do I owe this visit? plea-se sit down” he offered him a sit.
“Thanks swavey, what of your family?”
“They are all fine, I would have asked about yours too but you refused to re-marry after the death of Eunice, so let me refer the question to you, how have you been?” he said all at once.
“I have been fine, you know I can’t love any woman the way I love Eunice?” he replied.
“Yes I know, I know, so what do I offer you?”
“Nothing, am okay, I have something I want to discuss with you”
“Okay, go ahead”
“It is about doctor Michael, I want to know the name of the hospital he was transferred to” he completed.

“I hope there is no problem?” doctor Swavey asked.
“No, not at all” he said letting out a smile.
“Let me get his file then” he said standing up, he moved towards the drawer and brou-ght out a piece of paper, “here it is” he said handing him the paper.
“The Pathway Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja” Mr Humphrey re-ad out with a smile.
