Selected workers at Nkiru company where she worked c@m£ to confirm that Nkiru is truly dead. Most of them found it ha-rd to believe what Joe said until they saw her lying lifeless.
“But she was strong and healthy when she last c@m£ to the office, what a life! The secretary said still in disbelief.
“My condolence Joe, and we will surely do something to support the burial. Just inform us on time about when she will be la-id to rest, the man repres£nting the manager said.
‘Sure, you’ll be upd@t£d. Thank you, Joe said and they nodded.
After they left, Francis was discharged and they returned home together..
Francis looked around as so many memories flashed on his head and Joe noticed the sadness on his face,
“What’s wrong? Joe asked him.
“Somehow bro, mama made good memories here and I can’t help but remember them, Francis replied and Joe patted him,
“Yet you refused to see her today, Joe said and Frank frowned.
“plea-se don’t remind me about that, i don’t want to see her plea-se, he said and Joe heaved.
“Fine, then Go to your room and have your rest while I get you something to eat, Joe said to him and Francis scoffed.
“Prepare something for me to eat? When did you learn how to cook? Francis asked and Joe smiled.
“So you’ve forgotten that before I fell sick I was very interested in the kitchen and could cook very well? Just that mama drove me away anytime I entered the kitchen when I fell sick because of my sight, but I still gat my cooking skills up here just that I nee-d a little finishing tou-chings in refreshing my memory, Joe replied.
“Wow I Can’t remember that though, maybe I was so young then, Francis said.
“Exactly, Maria can tell you about me, at least she wasn’t that young If she can still remember, Joe said.
“She do tell me things about you though, how you do carry her on your back to school without letting her legs to t©uçh the ground to walk and how much you cared for her like a princess, that’s why she loved you regardless of your sight, Francis said and Joe sadly nodded.
“And I owe her a lot, now let me show you the little skills I can still remember, not that potash you do cook for me when you’re opportuned to enter the kitchen, Joe said and Francis laughed.
“You wish, tell me you’ve never enjoyed my meals before, Francis said.
“Don’t even go there plea-se, I had no choice than to swallow whatever I saw as food even though it tasted like medicine, Joe said and Frank laughed.
“I’ve heard you, I can’t wait to eat your own potash, He said and Left for his room………….
Just as Joe uncle promised, he was re-ady to travel with Joe the next day. To help Francis at home, he brou-ght his teen daughter to stay with him until they get back.
They safely got to the village with as-sorted drinks and food items stuck up in the car for peace offering, and Joe uncle showed him Nkiru family house over there in the village which they entered first. Everyone was surprised to see him,
“My son is this you? The last time you c@m£ here you were still a little boy, but when your father died everyone one of you vanished, an old woman said to him.
“Sorry about that mama, we are back and we promise to be visiting, Joe said.
“Come in, how are your siblings? Especially that small English woman, the woman asked and Joe laughed.
“Yes, that she will be b!owing English everywhere for us, she should be married by now, who knows if everything was done in the city, the woman continued.
“You’re talking about Maria and she’s not in the state but she will be back soon. And ermm, she’s not yet married, Joe replied.
“God forbid don’t say that, what is she waiting for? An elderly man there asked.
“Soon papa very soon, Joe replied.
“She better be. So I heard Nkiru is dead, the woman said and Joe uncle looked at Joe.
“News spre-ad fast, Joe uncle said.
“Especially for someone bad, it spre-ads like wildfire. And I hope you’re not thinking of bringing her here if that is why you are here? The woman asked.
“Ahhhh you can’t throw away the water with the child, she still remains one of us, Joe uncle replied.
“Eh eh eh eh…..don’t tell me that! Who cares if she’s one one us when she forgot we even existed! The woman flared up.
“Listen to me….. “Don’t tell me to listen to you. She abandoned her family and shut us away from her life, should we now accept her carcas-s like she was in anyway good to us? Let her be buried in the city, there are dumping grounds for people like her, after all she told us that she will be buried there respectfully. She forgot she started here before she got privileged to be picked by her late husband, the woman said cutting in on Joe uncle.
“Nkiru said she will be buried in the city? Joe uncle asked.
“Yes o, she kept saying that before she finally cuts us off, the man there replied and Joe uncle looked at him and heaved.
“Mama, the truth is if we have the permission to bury my mother in the city…. If it is okay with the villagers then its okay I can go ahead with it. I just want this to be off My shoulders so I can face my life, Joe said.
“My son you have every go ahead and permission you nee-d to bury that witch anywhere you want, the woman said and Joe g@sped.
“Witch? Joe asked.
“Ohrrr rumors had it that she’s a witch, besides that’s how witches behaves and I’m f0rç£d to believe them, the woman replied.
“I think you are taking this thing too far, I know she has hurt a lot of people but plea-se let’s calm down at least for the sake of her innocent children, Joe uncle said.
“We have no problem with her children, we can’t hate them because of their mother. In fact we even want to see them and be close to them because its dangerous they don’t even know their relations. What if Joe here sees my daughter out there and falls in love with her not knowing that’s his relation? The man there asked and Joe could’nt st©p laughing.
“Sorry papa but that was funny, love is the last thing on my mind now, Joe said.
“But it happens and you nee-d to know your family. Right now you’re just like a stranger in your own land which is not suppose to be so. I just hope that you won’t go after your mother steps to shun your people like a plague, that’s no life, the man said.
“I un-derstand papa and you’ve said it all. If my mother won’t be buried here there’s no problem, but still I will have to meet the chiefs, the elders and fathers of the land to introduce myself to them. Francis is sick and not too strong, when he gets better we will surely come down to see everyone and we will try not to miss the festivals and celebr@tion here as children of the soil. We are even lucky both my parents are from here, Joe said.
“That is very wise of you, and if the d@t£ is fixed for Nkiru burial be free to let us know, we will surely attend the burial, the woman said.
“Thank you mama, by the way we brou-ght this for you, Joe said giving them bags they brou-ght from the city.
“Thank you, God bless you. Bring the food nau! The man shouted…………
Leaving Nkiru family house, they got to Joe late father house and had another share of the peoples grievances. Joe uncle was able to calm the situation as they didn’t even want to have anything to do with the children. According to them, Nkiru controlled their late son till death and treated them as $h!t.
“Mama, papa, I am very sorry…… “My son its okay. We heard you were sick and I didn’t even notice you’re well, a woman there cuts in on Joe.
“Yes just recently, and I want to apologize. plea-se don’t throw us away and leave us on our own because of my late parents attitude. We the children will be different, plea-se have mercy. Soon i believe my junior sister will nee-d your blessing as she will come here for her traditional wedding, plea-se I’m begging, take us back, Joe said going on his knees and they heaved.
“Get up my son, plea-se stand up, a woman there said raising him up.
“Its okay its forgiven. But there will be no farm land I will sacrifice from the small I have to bury your mother even though your late father married her to us, a man there said.
“No papa its okay. She can be buried in the city, all that is important now is seeing the families reconciled with the children so they won’t feel they are alone. They nee-d their cousins and the rest of their relations, Joe uncle said.
“Good and fine then it is settled, we will surely attend when the d@t£ is fixed, the elderly man said.
“Ohh thank you papa. But plea-se can you do me the favor of fixing the d@t£? I don’t want her to overstay there, at least in the space of 2 weeks she should be buried, Joe said.
“I think we will have a meeting with the 2 families, don’t worry I’ll upd@t£ you, Joe uncle replied.
“Oh that’s better, thank you uncle I appreciate, Joe said.
“its okay my son. So when did you say is Maria traditional marriage? The man asked and Joe laughed.
“Soon papa very soon, he replied.
“Let it be soon, she’s too pretty to be single till now, thats an error, Joe uncle said……………
That night after visiting the chiefs and fathers of the land, Joe tiredly returned with His uncle to the house he built in the village and Maria called.
“Hello bro how did it go? She asked.
“I just got home, it was stressful and there’s really a lot to talk about but the purpose was achieved. Uncle was really helpful today, I’m glad he c@m£ with me, He replied.
“Oh thank God, you’ll be back tomorrow? She asked.
“Uhmmm no, that should be next. Let me use tomorrow to see their faces again before I’ll leave the next day, i don’t want it to look like I’m in a hurry, Joe replied.
“Okay, so I’ve been transfered back and given a month break to settle myself. I’ll be there on weekend so I can help you out and of course take in the enough gist you have for me, she said laughing.
“You wish like i have the strength. Anyway that’s good news and I’m happy you’ll be fully back so Seth won’t be having BP anyhow, Joe said and she laughed and Joe uncle walked in.
“Okay uncle is here, Joe said to her and handed the phone to him.
“Hello Ada, her uncle said.
“Uncle good evening. Thank you so so much Joe told me you’ve been very helpful, God bless you richly, Maria said.
“Amen and its nothing, so when will I see that fine face again? He asked and she laughed.
“Weekend uncle on weekend. I’ll be back to settle there fully, she replied.
“That’s good and your aunties and uncles are alre-ady asking when canopies will be outside for your celebr@tion though Joe said very soon, He said.
“I join in his faith, very soon uncle, she said.
“Amen, take care of yourself okay, he said..
“Thank you uncle and you too. I’ll call back in the morning you sound tired, she said.
“Sure you have no idea, goodnight dear, he said and handed the phone to Joe.
“So Let me have a warm bath and rest my head for the night. Goodnight and plea-se help me call Francis, tell him not to call me biko I’m too tired, Joe said.
“No problem bro, Good night, Maria said and he dropped the call………….
