God helping me I was able to pay for the first semester and began, I thought of staying in the school but my mom was my problem.
I took the stress from house to school then move to the shop at any break I got.
I was so grateful for Charity who covered up for me in school, she was a big relief for me as she was in the hostel and always available.
It was the day of my Matriculation, I wished my mom could follow me but I couldn’t do that.
I put on my go-wn for her to see and she bur-st out laughing and fell on the ground.
I joined her in laughing crying in my heart and thought of not going for the matriculation but it was important.
I got to the school just me and watched as everyone was taking pictures with their parents and friends, but mine was a sad different story.
I took a picture of myself with the go-wn to show my mom, and was about leaving to keep myself busy in the shop when Charity ran and met me,
“Hey where to? I’ve been calling you, she said breathing ha-rd .
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear that, I’m going to the shop, you know that’s where I make my money, I replied.
“Oh girl even today? She asked and I heaved.
“Charity its better I go, I mean what’s here for me? There’s no one to snap with me so? I asked and she looked at me for a while and dragged me with her.
“Charity st©p plea-se I’m serious, I got clothes i nee-d to attend to, I said while following her.
“Not another word from you, she said and took me to a canopy.
“Dad meet my best friend in School Purity, she introduced and I respectfully greeted her dad.
“My daughter has been saying so much about you, nice to see you, he said.
“My plea-sure sir, I said.
“So we are going out and you’re coming with us, he said and I looked at Charity which she win-ked at me.
“Uhmmm sir you…… “Yes dad let’s go, Charity cut in and we left and took a picture first before getting to his car.
He drove us to a sit out where I was able to taste the food I’ve missed for so long, and the discussion was all about me.
Charity dad was displea-sed I’m alre-ady catering for myself at such an early age when I should be concentrating with my studies.
And before I knew it, he offered to train both of us and st©pped me from working and concentrate on such an important field of study.
I g@sped and shook my head and sat down well to take in what he just said,
“You mean sir you’re going to train me? But why? I asked.
“Is it a crime to give a helping hand if I’m capable of doing that? You’ve been a good friend to my daughter and I won’t want you to drop out in the process and leave my daughter lonely. If your stay in school and in this dep@rtment will make my daughter love what she is studying, I’m re-ady to do what it takes, he replied and I looked at Charity and saw her smiling at me.
I saw the seriousness on their face and I knew they meant it,
“Thank you, thank you so much sir, I said about going on my knees but Charity held me instead.
“so now will you st©p thinking of how you will pay for the next semester and other things in school? She asked and I sniffed nodding.
“Don’t worry Purity, I have faith you two will come out strong and the best in the dep@rtment, and when that is done I have a hospital to get you employed immediately, he said.
“No dad I thought we talked about this? I don’t want to work for anyb©dy, I nee-d mine, Charity said.
“Common dear that means you nee-d to further, he said.
“I will did, but I don’t just want to work for anyb©dy, she said.
“Hmm independent lady, I said.
“You can say that again, Charity said and her dad laughed.
“Honey let’s start from somewhere first and when I see your zealousness I’ll do something about that, he said.
“Thank you, she happily said and I remembered my dad.
Charity is the only daughter and the last of his children……though he has 3 grown up boys who stays in Korea. Charity was gotten out of matrimony but sadly her mother died while giving birth to her, that made her dad so attached and loved Charity so dearly so she won’t miss having a mother.
I miss my dad seeing them together and wished he was here.
I shook it off and continued with my meal while we talked of other things till I got home taking an extra plate for my mom.
My matriculation wasn’t that bad as I thought but what got me disturbe-d is the closing of my shop.
I c@m£ to love what i do, but truth be told it was getting into the line of my studies and I wasn’t concentrating all that.
The distance was alre-ady a disturbance and I was risking it to be parading on the road just because of my work.
“Maybe I should drop it and face my studies squarely now that God has s£nt me a helper, I said and called the owner of the shop explaining things to him.
My rent hasn’t expired but he was very un-derstanding, he told me to come to the shop the next day so we will talk better.
I dropped the call and heard my mom coughing ha-rd and I rushed inside to see my mom chocked up while she was rushing the chicken I gave to her.
I quic-kly gave her water to drink and she was breathing heavily,
“That happens when you don’t take it slow when eating, I said to her and she laughed and continued with her food…….
The next day in the morning I went to the shop to meet the owner explaining things to him better,
“Purity where will you be getting money to take care of yourself? Will you be relying on them totally for survival? He asked.
“Sir I thought about that too and I’m not even active here, I’m alre-ady missing customers and even when i get a material where is the chance to deliver it at the expected time? I asked.
“I’m only concerned, but don’t worry I’ll give you p@rt of the money so you’ll use it to take care of yourself, he said.
“Thank you so much sir, i said and surprisingly he c@m£ prepared and gave me 15,000 naira and i was so happy knowing some sto-res owner won’t even give a dime.
“When are you vacating? He asked.
“Can you give me 2 days sir so i can call the owners of the clothes I’m holding to come get their properties, I said.
“No problem, when you are done call me to come get the keys, he said.
“I will sir thank you so much, I said and I took off to school……….
After I st©pped working, before leaving for school I’ll make sure there’s food for my mom to eat till i get back and I’ll be sure to come back in the evening and if there’s any break I’ll be with Charity in the hostel.
My parading on the road every day was less£n and I could concentrate with my studies and have enough rest for my b©dy.
Charity dad practically s£nds us upkeep and text books money throu-gh his daughter every week, and i saw my b©dy bloom back to the way it used to be.
I was also getting money from the politician wife for text books and school was very delicious for me, though i saved the money to take my mom to the hospital when it seems angel just disappeared into thin air after he left with my l@pt©p.
After our 1st semester the results was so encouraging. The little break they gave us, I used it to spend time with my mom and kept my sewing machine outside to do some sewing for the villagers who wanted me to mend their clothes just to keep myself busy.
After a month we resumed, but after a month of our resumption I saw Charity was dwindling away. She was constantly missing lectures, and there’s this girl in a different dep@rtment and higher than us in level always taking her out.
Purity no longer had time for me and i wasn’t comfortable with that and I didn’t trust this girl either.
“Hey going out without me today? I asked Charity after the lecture that just finished.
“yea why? You can take care of yourself can’t you? She asked.
“What is wrong with you? Can’t you see this girl is influencing you negatively? I don’t know you anymore, i said.
“And who are you to tell me who to follow? My mother or what? she shouted and i sighted the girl waiting outside and i stormed out meeting her.
“What the hell do you want from Charity! I shouted on her and she scoffed laughing.
“Who the hell are you? Baby what’s wrong with her? She asked Charity and i looked at Charity.
“Baby? I asked her surprised.
“Will you st©p embarras-sing me Purity! Charity shouted and i shook my head and left to the hostel.
I searched throu-gh her things and found out she has been introduced to lesbianism.
“Oh Christ i smelled this! I shouted and dialed her number and after 2 rings she picked up.
“We have an emergency right now at the laboratory, you know you can’t fail to attention this, I lied.
“What! But its not on the timetable, she said.
“That’s because you were not Around to know we will be having it today. You nee-d to come back quic-k and don’t worry I’ll be with your lab coat, i said and dropped the call and left to the l@p to wait to her.
10 minutes later she rushed down and met me outside listening to music and she saw it was a lie,
“Really? Do you now lie to have my attention now huh? She asked angry.
“Hey look, we nee-d to talk, I said getting up from the stairs.
“F*uck you! She shouted and was about to leave.
“Listen Charity i know what you’re doing and if you don’t st©p this, I’ll be f0rç£d to report to the school authorities! I shouted and she st©pped and turned looking at me.
“I mean it, I said and she smiled and drew very close to me,
“What are you scared of? Don’t worry my dad will still take care of you alright, she said.
“Just shut up! How did you get to be this way? Can’t you see what they are doing to you? Now its lesbianism tomorrow will be cultism and the purpose of going to school will be terminated. Is this the best way to repay your father? In case you don’t know, my dad is capable of training me here but he is not doing that, make good use of this opportunity you have and st©p wasting it away when thousands are seeking to have it. Trust me girl, you will regret this and don’t say i didn’t warn you, I said and walked out from her………
