Evan

The doctor had advised us to wait outside
while she as-sess her. It has been thirty
minutes since Cara and I were outside our
room, holding our breaths. When she finally
came out, I leapt towards her and asked
impatiently about Scarlet.
“She is now awake and perfectly fine, Mr.
Parker.” The doctor told me and a creepy
smile was etched on her face. “And I have a
good news.”
“Good news?” I narrowed my eyes.
“Your wife is pregnant.” She said and suddenly,
I stopped hearing whatever else she was
saying.
Pregnant. The word echoed in my ears and the
first thing that came to my mind was Eliza and
what the pregnancy did to her. She bled to
death while giving birth and I couldn’t imagine
the same happening to Scarlet.
“Is she alright?” I asked.
“Yes, you can meet her.” She said and
immediately, I hopped inside the room and
found her lying on the bed, looking slightly
pale.
“Oh my God, are you alright?” I reached her
and knelt beside her. Leaning forwards, I
ki-ssed her forehead and gripped her small
hand in mine.
“Yes,” she smiled and put her hand against my
cheek. “Did you hear what the doctor said? We
are going to have a baby.” Her eyes filled with
tears of happiness and so did mine. The only
difference was in my tears, the dominating
factor was the worry for her health.
Yes, I would love to have mini Scarlets
chirping around the house but not on the
expense of her life. She was too precious for
me and I couldn’t imagine any harm to her.
“Are you happy?” She asked, staring into my
eyes with her warm gaze.
“I am,” I said and pec-ked her li-ps again.
“D… Daddy, is Mama okay?” Cara’s worried
voice erupted from behind.
Scarlet motioned her to come towards us and
when she did, I seated her down beside Scarlet
on the bed. “Mama is alright, Cara. And you
know what? You are going to have a little
brother or sister soon.”
“Really?” Cara exclaimed. It took her a minute
to un-derstand and once she did, she started
clapping with her hands.
“Yes.” Scarlet said.
“A little one? Those with little fingers and
short, chubby legs?” She asked in an
enthusiastic voice.
“Yes, exactly those.” Scarlet replied.
“Yay!!!” Cara screamed and jumped out of the
bed in excitement. “We will call it Caru if it’s a
boy and Cari if it’s a girl.”
Both Scarlet and I chuckled at the names she
had chosen for her sibling and exchanged a
look. I Ca-ressed Scarlet’s hair and smiled,
although my stomach was twisted in knots. I
didn’t want my fears to ruin this happiness for
her so I excused myself and went to the
bathroom. Locking myself inside, I sat over the
edge of the bathtub and hid my face in
between my palms.
…………
“Scarlet, finish the bowl.” I ordered and she
made a sour face.
“Evan, I am done. I am not hungry anymore.”
She whined and slid the tray away.
“Finish it. You are pregnant. You nee-d to take
care of your diet now. I don’t want you to black
out again.” I said and picked up the bowl.
Filling the spoon with the soup, I extended my
hand towards her. Gr0-ning in complain, she
finally opened her mouth and let me slid it
inside.
“You aren’t letting me do anything and just
keep on feeding me. I am just pregnant Evan,
it’s not like I am dying.” She said and the bitter
feeling in my stomach returned.
“Don’t… Don’t ever say that again.” I snarled,
suppressing my anger.
“What happened?” She asked with confusion
dripping from her face.
“Just don’t talk like that. And finish the soup.”
I handed her the tray containing the bowl.
She put it aside and rose to sitting position.
“Evan, what happened?” She said and cu-pp-ed
my face in between her palms. “Since the
doctor left, you’re looking distressed. Are you
not happy with this child? Is it too soon?”
“No, that’s not… Shit.” I slapped my forehead
for not being able to hide my concerns. An
emotionally unstable person was the last thing
she nee-ded right now. “I am happy, Scarlet.
God knows I am. But…”
“But?” She asked, a worried scowl on her face.
“I am afraid to lose you.” I said, feeling
helpless and weak. I was supposed to be her
strength, not the other way around.
“Afraid to lose me? You aren’t going to lose
me, Evan.” She told me in her gentle voice.
“I know. But what happened to Eliza…”
“I am not Eliza. What happened to her won’t
happen to me. These are two different
pregnancies, with hopefully two different
outcomes.” She said like a teacher explaining
something to her student.
“I don’t want to take any risk.” I said and
picked up the bowl of soup once more.
“So what? You are gonna feed me until I am
too heavy to move?” She asked, raising her
eyebrows.
“Maybe.” I joked to lighten the environment. “I
am sure you would look cute as Fu-ck when you
put on that baby weight.”
“Yeah, right.” She rolled her eyes, not believing
me.
I moved the spoon towards her and she
opened her mouth to drink it, making a
disgusted face at the taste. “It has all the
essential ingredients nee-ded for a pregnant
woman.” I said and she stuck her tongue out,
swallowing the liquid. “Good girl.” I said and
pec-ked her li-ps once again.
After she finished the bowl, I cozied into the
blanket with her, pulling her to my che-st. “What
do you want? Boy or girl?” I whispered.
“Honestly? I want a mini Evan, just as stubborn
as you are.” She said, wrapping her arms
around my torso.
“I am not stubborn.” I defended myself.
“You are, and I like your stubbornness.” She
chuckled against my arm. “What about you?
Girl or boy?”
“Doesn’t matter. I just want to be there for the
child and not repeat the mistakes I did with
Cara.” I said. I missed every milestone of
Cara’s childhood because I was too busy in
my work. This time, this child and my family
would be my first priority.
“You’ll be a great Dad to that kid. I am sure.”
She said and placed a ki-ss above the hollow
of my ne-ck.
“And you will be a great mother, just like you
are with Cara. You are a born mother, Scarlet.
People like you don’t nee-d a child to prove
their maternal instincts.” I said and leaned my
head to ki-ss her silky hair.
“I love you.” She lifted her head to look directly
into my eyes and whispered.
“I love you too.” I repeated and nuzzled my
nose against hers. “And I am going to spoil
you so much during this pregnancy. Whatever
you want, whatever you nee-d; your words, my
command.”
“You know what I want right now?” She
whispered against my li-ps, her voice de-ep and
sensuous.
“What?” I muttered un-der my breath.
“Chocolate chip Ice cream.” She said and
pulled away from me, a teasing sm-irk on her
face.
I laughed in response and then pulled her back
for a long, heated make out session. Once we
both were breathing mess, I pulled away from
her and hopped out of the bed saying, “One tub
of chocolate chip ice-cream coming right up.”

Scarlet

After hours of insisting from my side, Evan
finally agreed to drop me to the bakery
because according to him, I was still too
weak. It has been three days since I blacked
out and he has done everything he can to stop
me from any physical activity these three days.
It was this morning when I finally decided that
I was done sitting at home and nee-ded some
fresh air.
“If you nee-d anything, just call me.” He said,
unbuckling the seatbelt.
“I am fine, Evan.” I sighed. I knew his stress
for my health was logical after what happened
to his first wife but he has to un-derstand that
life doesn’t stop when you get pregnant.
“Believe me.”
“I know. But still, call me.” He said and ki-ssed
my forehead.
Smiling, I left the car and walked inside the
bakery where Liam was already waiting for me,
a teasing smile lingering on his mouth.
“So you saw that.” I asked.
“Yep.” He grinned. “Young love.”
“Remind me to say this when you are acting all
lovey-dovey with Helena.” I said, rolling my
eyes.
“Oh, so the pregnant you is sas-sy.” He said
and I scrunched my nose in confusion.
“What?”
“I have heard that pregnancy hormones can
change your usual personality.” He said.
“There is no such thing like that.” I said and
checked the orders list for today. The first
order was two dozen coconut cu-pcakes for Mr.
Rikkard that nee-ded to be delivered by 12.
“Yes, there is.” He said, arranging the shelves.
“I read it in a magazine.”
“What magazine was it? The bullshit
magazine?” I rolled my eyes again.
“See… Sas-sy.” He pointed at me and I
frowned. “Baby Parker is going to be a sas-sy
king or queen.”
“Whatever,” I said and went into the kitchen to
prepare the cu-pcakes.
Once all the cu-pcakes were ready to go, I
pulled off the apron and walked out of the
kitchen. Rachel came to inform me that
someone was waiting for me in the corner
booth and when I went there, I found Nate
sitting.
“I had some of your stuff.” He said, giving me
the shopping bag throu-ghwhich my clothes
were peeking.
“Thank you so much.” I said and seated in
front of him. “Would you like coffee or
anything?”
“No, it’s okay.” He said. “I heard a new
addition to your family is on the way. I didn’t
know Evan was this eager to have you back.”
Hearing this, I let out a small laugh. “Thanks,
for everything.”
“The plea-sure is all mine.” He smi-rked, his
bluish green eyes gleaming.
“I hope I wasn’t too much of a burden.” I said
and asked Rachel to bring coffee for him. His
eyes lingered on Rachel’s retreating figure after
which, he turned his attention back to me.
“It was fun, knowing how much this angered
Evan.” He chuckled.
“He… He can be a little difficult sometimes.
But I’m sure he doesn’t think the worst of you.”
I replied.
“Oh, let me tell you sweetheart, he sure does.
He thinks I was trying to steal his wife from
him.” He said, brushing his hair back from his
forehead.
“Were you?” I raised my eyebrows.
He let out a small chuckle, after which he
leaned towards me and added, “Wanna know a
secret? You remind me of my sister.”
“Oh,” I whispered briefly and cursed the part of
my mind that had a tiny crush on him when I
first saw him.
“But he doesn’t nee-d to know that. Let him
burn a little.” He added in a whisper.
We were busy in these talks when Rachel
returned with two cu-ps of coffee and placed
them in front of us. “Thank you Miss…?” Nate
trailed off.
“Rachel.” She replied, a hint of crimson colour
appearing on her cheeks un-der his piercing
gaze.
“Rachel.” He repeated in an extra de-ep voice.
“Can I have your number, Rachel?”
“What?” She gasped out loud, exchanging a
worried glance with me.
“I’m kidding,” Nate cleared and Rachel’s face
relaxed a bit. “I’ll take it from your boss.” He
added with a wink.
She gulped nervously and ran away from our
sight in an impossibly fast speed. I glared at
grinning Nate and asked, “Why were you
teasing her?”
“I love making women blus-h.” He shrugged
and took a long sip of the coffee.
We continued talking while enjoying the coffee
prepared by Liam. My best friend definitely
had magic in his hands and nobody, not even
my pregnant self was immune to it. Evan had
strictly told me to avoid coffee but no sane
person can resist this delicious aroma.
Once Nate stood up to leave, Rachel returned
to collect the empty cu-ps and trays. Her hands
trembled a little, her nervousness clear from
her face.
“Are you leaving?” I asked, standing up with
him to go back to the kitchen.
“Yeah but I will be back soon. The coffee here
is addictive.” He said while his voice was
more directed at Rachel who was burning in
response.
…………
Evan came to pick me at 6 which was too
early for either of us. He had already called
Kelly to make the dinner for the rest of them
and a bowl of that weird nutritionous soup for
me. Both father and daughter made sure that I
finished the soup before leaving the dining
table.
“How long do I have to keep eating that?” I
asked once I was back in the room.
“Until the next checkup.” He said.
Huffing, I sat down on the bed and crossed
my arms in front of my che-st in anger. Evan
smiled at this and knelt in front of me, pulling
the sandals out of my feet.
“How was your day?” He said, crossing his
legs on the floor and pulling my feet in his
hands.
“What are you doing?” I asked, trying to pull
my feet away.
“I’ve heard that pregnant women often
complain of swollen feet.” He said and
mas-saged my feet with his cold fingers. The
soothing feeling calmed my mind a little and I
closed my eyes.
“Yes, right there.” I said and let him mas-sage
my feet a little. He was right. My feet had
started to pain a little after walking around the
bakery the whole day.
I lay back on the bed and muttered un-der my
breath, “If I knew my pregnancy would make
you this sweet, I would have jumped on you
the very first day.” Maybe Liam was right,
maybe the pregnancy hormones were changing
me a little and making me more bold.
His hands stopped and after standing up, he
hovered over me. “And if I knew how delicious
you looked without any clothes on, I would
have jumped on you the minute I saw you.” He
teased, making me blus-h.
“Before you get too excited, let me inform you
that I am too tired to move right now.” I said.
“Who are you and what have you done to my
innocent wife?” He asked with a hint of
surprise on his face.
I shrugged and closed my eyes, not caring to
stri-p out of my day clothes. I felt Evan pick me
up and shift me on my side on the bed,
covering me with the cozy blanket.
