While Evan left to take to bath, I quickly
prepared two steaming cu-ps of coffee for us.
It was a peaceful night and what made it more
peaceful was the sight of Evan and Cara earlier
today. The distance between them had started
to vanish and I couldn’t be more grateful for
that.
By the time he returned, I had changed into my
nightgown and was waiting for him on the bed.
He had changed into a fitting black T-shirt that
hu-gged his muscular torso perfectly. He was a
very handsome man who could easily melt a
girl with a small wink or a sm-irk. His eyes
were the best part of him, that could hypnotize
anyone with just one sharp glare.
I was so busy admiring him that I zoned out
for a moment. When I moved out of my
imaginary world, I found Evan towering over
me. I blus-hed on getting caught checking him
out and scolded my hormones mentally.
“You look like you want to jump at me,” he
said with a teasing sm-irk on his face.
“Is that a bad thing?” I asked, raising my
eyebrows.
His sm-irk de-epened and he lowered himself to
my level, caging me in between his strong
arms. “You can jump at me any time.” He
whispered in my ear.
“Good to know,” I replied, staring de-ep into his
gorgeous blue eyes. The radial pattern
intermixed with greyish specks fluttering
around lured me in and I found myself inching
closer to him.
This was probably the first time I had initiated
our ki-ss by wrapping my arms around his ne-ck
and pulling him towards me. His li-ps gently
brushed against mine in a slow yet pas-sionate
rhythm and my breath hitched. His ki-sses were
so perfect that if I could do one thing for the
rest of my life, it would be ki-ssing him.
Our position was too uncomfortable for both of
us so we parted for a second and he shifted
on the bed, pulling me in his lap. I straddled
his wai-st and began ki-ssing him again, pouring
all the emotions directly into the heated ki-ss.
Evan’s hands that were on my wai-st reached
the knot of my gown and undid it, letting it
sli-p off me. His hands once again wrapped
around my wai-st and he increa-sed the speed
of his tongue against mine.
I felt lightheaded because of the feelings in the
pit of my belly. He was the only one who had
the ability to turn me into a hor-ny mess.
“The…” I tried to speak but he didn’t let me.
“C… Coffee.” I said breathlessly and reminded
him of the coffee cu-ps sitting beside us,
waiting to get cold.
Evan parted from me, his pupils dilated
probably just like mine, the desi-re in them
clear. “God,” he said breathlessly and tucked
my free hair behind my ears.
“You make me crazy.”
I blus-hed un-der his pas-sionate gaze and
disentangled myself from him, not caring about
the lack of my gown. We picked up our
respective cu-ps and pulled the blankets over
our legs.
“I had to tell you something.” He said, taking a
sip of the coffee.
“What?” I asked.
“I am going to New Jersey for three days.” He
said and my mood drowned immediately. I
couldn’t imagine spending three days without
looking at him. It wasn’t normal for me to feel
so head over heels for him, was it?
“Oh.” I whispered, staring at the pattern of
steam coming out of the cu-p.
“Do you want to go with me?” He asked.
I wanted to, but I didn’t want to leave Cara
behind. It wasn’t long since I went to Malibu
with Evan and if I kept vanishing for days
straight, she would feel left out and
abandoned. She was already very sen-sitive
about her relationship with Evan and I didn’t
want to be the reason to create any more
wedge between them.
“No, you go. I should focus on the bakery
now.” I replied.
“As you wish,” he smiled and rested his head
on my shoulder. His curls tickled my skin and
I let out a long sigh.
“I’ll miss you,” I said and put the cu-p aside,
lacing my fingers with his.
“I’ll miss you too, love.” He replied.
“Do you miss her?” I asked further. Since we
returned from Malibu, he hadn’t mentioned
Eliza once. Things were getting better between
us but I didn’t want him to think he can’t talk
about his pain in front of me. A real
relationship doesn’t survive on ki-sses and hu-gs
only. It nee-ds un-derstanding, trust and honesty.
“Miss who?” He asked but I had a feeling he
knew what I meant.
“Eliza.” I said. It felt weird taking her name. It
felt weird taking someone else’s place in
someone’s life. I felt like wherever she was,
she hated me for being so close to Evan right
now.
“Of course I miss her. You never forget your
first love.” He said and a sad smile appeared
on my face. “Tell me, who was the first person
you loved?”
You. That’s what I wanted to say. Before Evan,
I never felt so strongly about anyone. But
things were just starting between us. Telling
him how I have fallen for him badly was the
last thing our relationship nee-ded.
“I have never loved anyone R0m-ntically.
Crushes sure but love, I don’t think so.” I said,
chuckling at all the crushes I had in high
school.
“Really?” He asked, parting away from me and
staring at my face attentively.
“Yep,” I answered shyly.
“I’ll be your first in everything then.” He winked
mischievously and I grinned in return. He was
already the first person to make love to me
and I was looking forwards to him being my
other firsts too.
………..
“Take care of yourself. Don’t just work for the
next 72 hours,” I said to Evan who was now
packing his bag to leave for New Jersey. He
hadn’t even left yet and I had started to miss
him.
“And you… You have to take care of yourself
and my daughter, both.” He said, zi-pping the
suitcase. With small steps, he walked towards
me and angled his ne-ck to look at me. “Don’t
go anywhere alone. My driver will be here all
the time.”
“We will be fine. Go otherwise I’ll stop you.” I
said and looked away because I was feeling
emotional all of a sudden.
“Will you?” He said and pulled me in for a hu-g.
I wrapped my arms around him and returned
his hu-g with equal fervour, hiding my face in
his che-st. He smelled nice, his usual scent
mixed with something spicy.
We were busy in that hu-g when Cara’s voice
echoed in the room. “Daddy.”
“Yes, Cara.” Evan said, pulling away from me.
“I made this PB&J sandwich for you. You can
eat it in the plane.” Cara said innocently,
without realising that Evan wasn’t going on a
roadtrip. Evan and I looked at each other and
smiled sheepishly at her cuteness.
“Thank you, sweetheart.” Evan lowered himself
to her level and took the box from her. He
cu-pp-ed her cheeks and then placed a ki-ss on
her forehead. “Take care of your mama, Cara.”
“I will,” she showed her toothy grin. Together,
we went to the door where Evan’s driver was
waiting for him to drive him to the airport.

After finishing all the work of the day, I took a
long, relaxing shower and made my way to the
bed. The room felt lonely without Evan. Even
though he was more often busy in his work,
his presence in the room was enough to keep
me occu-pied but now that he was gone for
three days, I couldn’t help but miss him.
I was busy thinking about him when my phone
started ringing. His name popped on the
screen and a hu-ge smile appeared on my li-ps.
Answering the call, I listened to his voice
silently as he said, “Hi.”
“Hi,” I replied. “How are you?”
“Fine. How’s everyone there?” He asked further.
“Everyone is alright. Are you alone right now?” I
asked, pulling the blanket close to me.
“No, I am with a girl I met during the
conference.” He said, mischief clear in his
voice.
“Really?” I raised my eyebrow, as if he could
see me. “You, Evan Parker, met a girl while
working?”
“Why? Is it that unbelievable?” He chuckled
from the other side.
“Yep,” I nodded.
“Okay, then forget about the girl. Tell me, what
are you doing?” He asked.
“Lying on the bed.” I replied, grinning wide.
“And what are you wearing?” He asked and I
blus-hed. I was wearing my navy blue satin
shorts and a white crop top, my hair W-et from
the shower I took.
“Are you fli-rting with me?” I asked.
“Maybe. Isn’t that how boys fli-rted in
highschool?” He asked and I giggled.
“What if I tell you I am wearing nothing?” I
replied, feeling bold all of sudden.
He stayed silent for a minute, after which his
de-ep voice echoed throu-ghthe phone. “Then
I’ll have to book an early flight.”
The temperature of my cheeks rose up and I
bit my li-ps. I wanted him here with me, to ki-ss
me and to feel his hands all over me. That one
night with him had made me craving him non-
stop, to have him take me to the height of
ecstasy.
“Go, sleep.” I said, controlling the smile on my
li-ps.
“I don’t want to.” He replied. “Come here. Gabe
will arrange your flight.”
“Evan. Go sleep now and let me sleep as well.”
I ignored his tempting offer.
“Fine. But first, tell me what are you wearing?”
He asked and I rolled my eyes.
“But why?” I asked.
“So that I can imagine you lying next to me.”
He whispered and a shy smile appeared on
my li-ps.
“Navy blue satin shorts and a white crop top.”
I answered in a muffled voice.
“Sounds se-xy,” he replied in an unusually de-ep
voice that caused some tingling in the pit of
my belly and I blus-hed red like a tomato.
Before he could embaras-s me anymore, I cut
the call and took some de-ep breaths to calm
me.
Great . Now I nee-d a cold shower.
……….
Today was the second day without Evan in the
city. Cara and I had made a plan to visit the
nearby park today. We ditched Evan’s driver
because if we took him, he would follow us
like a tail the whole time as per his boss’
order.
The weather was perfect for a stroll today, not
too warm, not too cold. Cara and I, both were
dressed in matching sundresses, our hair tied
in French Br@ids. We were looking very similar,
the only difference was her blonde hair unlike
my light brown one.
After taking a brief walk, we seated ourselves
on the wooden benches surrounding the track
and observed the people around us. There
were people of all ages in the park, busy
enjoying in the open just like us. “Are you
missing Daddy?” Cara’s voice reached me.
“Yes, I am. Are you?” I asked. She bobbed her
head up and down, her mouth set in a pout.
“How’s playschool going?” I asked her. This
was her last month in playschool and then she
was going to be transferred into kindergarten.
Cara was a bright kid for her age and I am
sure she would be a good student.
“Great. But I don’t like Dylan.” She pouted
sadly.
“Who is Dylan?” I asked.
“He is in my clas-s. I hate him because he tugs
my pigtails.” She replied in a grieved voice,
staring at the ground.
“Does he? I’ll ask your teacher to talk to him. I
am sure he would listen.” I said and patted her
shoulder.
“He won’t listen. He is really stubborn.” Cara
added.
“Cara, we shouldn’t think the worse of
someone. I am sure he is a nice kid who can
be difficult sometimes.” I reasoned.
“Maybe.” She shrugged.
We were busy in our talk when a vendor selling
ice-cream strolled his cart past us. “Ice
cream.” Cara exclaimed in excitement.
“Come on, let’s buy some.” I said and
together, we walked towards the icecream cart
that he had stopped in a corner. “Which one
do you want to buy?” I asked Cara.
She stared at the hu-ge list of ice-creams in
confusion. It took her two minutes to figure out
which one she wanted. She asked the old man
for a Cornetto and then asked me to buy
another one for Geena, her babysitter. Although
it would probably melt by the time we reach
home, I let her buy one.
Together, we made our way out of the park.
Our sandals clic-ked against the footpath as we
treaded forwards. Cara was lic-king her
icecream while her other hand ti-ghtly secured
around the one she bought for Geena.
We had just reached the end of this road when
my phone started ringing. I asked Cara to wait
for a moment on my side while I answer to
the phone. It was Liam calling, most probably
to talk something about the bakery.
“Yes?” I answered the call.
“Scarlet, is there any order by Heather Scone?”
He asked.
“Yeah, she had ordered for a two-pound cake
and she nee-ded it delivered by 4pm.” I told
him and gave a glance to Cara who was
silently standing beside me.
“But you didn’t tell me. Neither is there any
pending order written in the list.” He said in a
tense voice.
“Shit. I was feeling a little lightheaded today. I
must have forgotten about it. I’m so sorry
Liam.” I slapped my forehead. It had never
happened before; we have never forgotten to
deliver an order on time. It was because all my
thoughts were converged on Evan this morning.
“It’s okay. What should we do now?” He asked.
“Don’t worry. I’ll call her and personally
apologize.” I replied.
“Okay, I’ll try to find a solution for her.” He
said and cut the call. I took a long sigh and
ru-bbed my temples that had started to pain a
little. Such irresponsible actions weren’t good
for the reputation of my bakery.
“Cara, let’s go and…” I angled my ne-ck to look
at her but she wasn’t standing beside me.
Panic filled me and I looked around myself,
only to find her kneeling in the middle of the
road, petting a cat.
“Cara,” I ran towards her and hearing my voice,
the cat suddenly ran away. She stood upright
nervously to look towards me and at the exact
moment, a car took a turn from the road to our
left towards this one. The full speed of the car
froze Cara in her place and my Br@in numbed
in fear. Adrenaline pumped in my veins and I
rushed towards her in full speed but I was too
far and too late. The front of the car collided
with Cara and her loud scream filled with fright
pierced throu-ghmy eardrum.
