It was a Friday…..it all began in the morning….
That day….. I had promised Nolly we were going to stay home all day….
The morning, she [Shola] called me….
Shola: Jide… I’m on my way home….
Me: You mean my place or what?
Shola: Yes or I can’t come again?
Me: I don’t know…
Shola: I want to see what she looks like….
Me: It’s okay… you can come.
I didn’t know how I was going to inform Nolly about Shola…. I still had to try….
Me: Baby…. Someone is going to be coming… to visit.
Nolly: Okay….. Is there a problem?
Me: No… she’s my ex….we d@t£d before I c@m£ to S.A
Nolly: Wow…. Are you telling me this now? You’ve an ex, and she’s coming to visit? You’re not ma-king s-en-se….

I went to my room… and tried to wear something better….
In an hour…. There was a loud ban-g on our gate…. And it was only going to be one person….
I rushed to get the gate…….
As I opened the gate, as about three guys with pistols pushed me …and tried to f0rç£ their way in…..
In trying to pu-ll in some restrictions…..
I was pushed by two of them…. They were all with guns….
One of them held my trou-ser, and pointed the gun on my head….
I led them inside the house…
It was only Nolly that was in the parlor….
As she saw the gun, she screamed and started crying….
One went to shut her mouth…..
I really didn’t know what or why they c@m£…. My sister was in her room….. And I knew she had the noise outside…. Buy proving smart….. She was inside……and didn’t come out…
In my pres£nce, he sl@pped Nolly….. And began looking at her se-ductively….

As we were watching TV… I felt it wasn’t right for me to call Nolly into the matter… it was just hours ago….

Me: I don’t know what to do o…. God saved Kemi… but it was planned mummy… because they just c@m£ straight to the point…. How did they even recognize her?
Mum: Where was Kemi then?
Me: she was in her room throu-ghout…. And I think she couldn’t hear what was going on… I was really sweating… and praying she doesn’t come out…
Mum: So the next thing to do…. You called Shola? To come and sympathize…. What a son I gave birth to…

The noise had gotten Nolly woken alre-ady…. She watched as my mum walked out of me……..

That yell… only made Shola stand up from where she was seated….

Nolly: My dad? Why won’t I inform him….*she started crying*
Me: There’s no point…. Babe, I know Shola wasn’t involved in this r@p£ incident… let’s do this thing slowly…. I’m very confused now.
Nolly: Why’s she here? Don’t you get? By the time the she rots in jail.

It was quite obvious the lies weren’t going to last for long… and we were only prepared to face the music of all we’ve done…..

We got to the doctor hospital around 8:30, there was some crazy traffic, which was of course expected…..
The hospital was still scanty….. We had to wait for the doctor, who didn’t arrive until about 10.
As he walked in, he sp©tted me…. And ushered me to his office, with him…
We sat in his office…. He wasn’t as of yet balanced, as he c@m£ in and went out in very short intervals….
Finally, he had our time….
Doctor: Good morning Jide… sorry, there were a number of patients I nee-ded to attend to…. How are you?
Me: I’m okay sir… plea-se meet Nolly… Nolly, meet the doctor… I’ve been talking about…
Nolly: Good morning sir…. And nice meeting you….
Doctor: So who is Nolly?
Me: She’s my fiancé…
Doctor: Okay, I un-derstand…. Anyway, Nolly you’ll have to excuse us….. We want to have a man to man talk….
Nolly: Okay….for how long? Anyway, I’ll be outside.
As the doctor heard the door close…..
Doctor: Jide, there’s a problem…. And more so, you’ve not paid for the burial of the baby? But that’s not the case now….
Me: Okay sir…. I’ll pay that before leaving here…
Doctor: Jide……
Me: Yes sir…. *as my heart started pounding* I was ma-king very wild guesses about what was to happen….
Doctor: You see, there’s something about Shola….
Me: Okay….
Doctor: You see, we found out that what killed the baby, wasn’t really the stress she went throu-gh…. There’s more to that…. Shola is a cancer patient… and as at now…. It is just too late for us to do anything… she has Myeloma…
Me: Sir…. I’m confused…. She has cancer? She has Myeloma? Which does she have?
Doctor: Calm down Jide… I’ll explain to you…. Myeloma is a type of cancer… it is a cancer of the plasma cells….
Me: How did she get it sir…. quic-kly, I tried to get my phone to do some research on it…
Doctor: That’s not the issue now Jide…. Shola isn’t going to survive this disease…. She’s been enduring it for close to five years…. Her immune system has fought but the whole thing is sick now…. She’s a really strong woman….
I didn’t know when tears started rolling down my eyes…. I cried, the doctor tried to calm me, my eyes turned red and so-re…. Somehow, I felt, if I hadn’t been in her life, she wouldn’t have had any problem…. And everything would have been okay for her….
Doctor: Jide, it’s okay….
Me: How long does she have?
Doctor: Let’s say two months…. But plea-se, don’t mention anything to her…. It could kill her even before then.
Me: I’ve to let at least, her parents know.
Doctor: Jide, I would be talking to you later….
He esc-rted me outside, by this time, the reception was full.
Nolly ran to me, as she saw my hands wiping away tears from my face….
Before asking anything, she esc-rted me out first….
And when we got inside the car….
Me: Shola has cancer. She has two months to live….
Till we got home, Nolly didn’t mention a single world….
I had no clue of what was going throu-gh her mind….
In the last months, I was determined to give the best I could ever give…to any woman.
Although, I was to resume in two weeks…. Things had to still work out in my way.

I pressed the horn to announce my arrival….

I drove in and got down..
Me: What about mummy?
Kemi: She’s not home…. You don’t expect to meet her at home now….

I got inside, and called Nolly to my room….
Me: What’s on your mind?
Nolly: What’s on your own mind? I was about asking?
Me: I’m confused…. Baby, I nee-d to serve Shola at this stages…. She was my first love…. She introduced me to everything I know about love today….
Nolly: Don’t continue…. Hold it on there…. I un-derstand…. How do you expect me to take it? It’s like you’re legally going to cheat on me…. In fact, that’s what you want to do… I can’t take that Jide…. I can’t.
Me: It’s okay….
Nolly: You’ll have to choose between me and Shola… I leave you that legitimacy Jide. There’s nothing more….

The area where I must have been regarded as a gentle figure….

Before I left Shola’s place, I told her mum to not mention anything…. For there was a risk of her getting killed even before the estimated time…
I got home and called Shola again.
Shola: Jide now….
Me: How are you feeling?
Shola: I’m okay….Jide you nee-d to tell me what’s going on…. What’s wrong with you and Nolly?
Me: Nothing…. I’m just curious about you now…. You know they say memories last forever… they’re like pictures that remain stagnant in the heart.

This really wiped away the anger that was in me and swept in fear immediately…
First, I was very confused on who would be disturbing at this time… and I was the only guy at home….
After mediating…. I got a lamp, as the ban-ging continued….
I got outside…. And asked who it was? About 3 voices responded at once… or maybe because I just woke, but there were actually about 3 voices…. I made up my mind they were robbers, and I wasn’t going to open the gate….
I ran inside, as a voice c@m£ over again…. “You better open this thing now”
Who has the guts to be shouting in a GRA at 5:23am?
I went to the kitchen to get any available tool…
I got a knife, sharpened it on the floor…..and went outside again….
Me: Who is there again?
This time, the reply was silent….. I taught they had gone, only for another ban-g…..
Probably our barbwire was saving me from them thinking of trying to scale throu-gh…..
There was not a single hole throu-gh the gate to at least, give me a clue on who were outside….
After my heart had pounded severally……
Reluctantly….. I opened the lock….
I was pushed away…. This guy’s held sophisticated guns I had not seen before…
Man: Are you Jide?
Me: Yes, I am…
Man: You’re un-der arrest….
Me: Arrest? For what?
I tried to struggle to get myself off them…and go inside the house….
Reluctantly.. they esc-rted me into the house…. My guess was right, there were 3 guys….
I was tensed as my heart was beating ra-pidly….
I was really surprised to still meet the sitting room empty….
First, I went to Kemi’s room…. To go and get mummy and Nolly.
By this time, I had alre-ady being handcuffed….
When my mum arrived the parlor, she was shocked… it was written all over her….

They were all looking…. And didn’t talk….

My mum got the officer’s number, promising to call asap….
The little I’ve heard about SARS…… they are authorized to kill any suspected armed robber… all they nee-ded to kill me, was to put me as a suspect….
They dragged me out…. As I kept asking questions on why I was arrested in the first place.

It was dawn…. I was taken in a car… My sister, Nolly, were outside, watching as I was taken away.
It took about 40minutes to get to Ikeja.
I was treated like a criminal… talk about a bank robber being arrested.
After disclosing all my pres£nt properties at the counter, I was locked up…
There were other bandits in the cell… who, were woken up by my arrival.
My eyes were opened throu-ghout as reality of life set in….
The sun lit up the cell, and we started hearing movements and car traffic.
When everywhere was fully lit up…. I was asked to come out…
I was taken to the counter…. My mum, kemi and Nolly were there….
Kemi had very heavy eyes, nollys’ was still fair…. Probably cos it’s not my first time…
Mum: They said it was Shola’s mum…..
Me: Shola’s mum? For what? That woman is daft o….
Immediately, I was sl@pped by the guy holding me…..
I turned to him, to at least l@yout a small threat….. but I only sp©tted the hole of his gun before I turned my face back..
Mum: See, I don’t know…. I’ve even tried to call her….
Me: It’s Shola you should call… since…
I was told there was a murder threat….that I went to threaten Shola’s mum concerning her daughter’s death….
Everyone that knew about her sickness was trying to hide it from her…. I had no idea what she must have told the SARS people, but it was only going to be related….
My mum had no idea how corrupt the police system is in the country…. She knows they collect bribe…. But extra bribe?
SARS are meant for robbery operations, but if well paid, can do anything for you….. Anything means anything…. After all, they’re the police.
It took hours before Shola c@m£…with her mum…..
That day, her mum displa-yed the highest level of immaturity a man can ever show off.
Her daughter was sick, probably she taught I was responsible….
While I was being bailed out…. I threatened to sue the police…… which I wasn’t even going to dare to do….
Shola alre-ady knew about her sickness at this time…..
Leaving the station…..
Shola: Jide, I think I spent my life well….

Only to find them being detained….temporarily…
They had gotten into a very big fight….
I was very angry, at the same time embarras-sed…. And the look on Shola’s face….
Confused, we all sat down…..
After much pleading, they were re-leased.
We left the police station in haste.
