“What gi- wait, you were that boy?!” I asked, gobsma-cked and he nodded. “You were that little boy?” I asked, still unsure and he nodded.
“Yes.. It’s shocking, I know. I remember how you had thanked me repeatedly after I explained what a caesarian operation was,” he said and I nodded ra-pidly “I can’t believe I found you, you just ran off, I didn’t even get to know much about you!” He said.
“Yeah.. I was too happy then. And you had given me.. Uh a n£¢klace?”
“Yes. It was a gift from my mom, I just wanted to give you something for giving me a chance to talk to you” he said, a little bashfully.
“Geez.. This is so awkward, I never thought I’d meet you again. I now know where those familiarity lately have been coming from” he said.
I smiled with a nod but suddenly it wiped off as memory hit me.
“That n£¢klace, your mom had given you as a birthday pres£nt, right?” I asked and he nodded and then wore a blank expression.
“It was the Luvi!” He beat me to the revelation and I nodded..
“Exactly!” I nodded. “And with all the whole relocation and stuff, I thought I had lost it and forgotten about it but I didn’t” I said.
“Wow.. This is one heck of a revelation!” He said and I nodded in concurrence.
“Yeah and looks like your memory’s starting to get pretty clear, you’re remembering things even without me asking” I said.
“You’re right. You think it’s a good sign?”
“It’s obvious that it is! You’re getting pretty good being human” I stated and he smiled.
We were quiet for a while and I stared at the moon, shinning very brightly in the sky. I felt his gaze on me and I tilt my head to catch his stare, the expression was somewhat unexplainable and uncertain.
“What?” I asked and the look wiped off immediately.
“You’ve really changed a lot, I mean I clearly remember how you looked like that time and here, look at you now- all different!” He said.
“It’s called growth, you did change a whole lot too. Well, except for your determination of course! You got me then and now and it’s pretty amusing now that I think about it” I said and he giggled.
“Well, I’m just glad I met that little girl again, that’s all” he said.
“Yeah, me too!” I said.

The next day, I woke up a little heavy with sleep.
I got myself re-ady for school and gr@bb£d my backpack. Mom and I had a quic-k breakfast and she drove me to school before heading for work.
I met Melvin on my way down the hall and we both head to clas-s together..
That morning, we had just two clas-ses cos the teachers that ought to take us for the next two clas-ses turned in sick and it was kind of surprising that they both got sick at the same time.
I could feel the jubilation in everyone’s action as they spent the free periods doing one thing or the other while awaiting lunch break.
Melvin busied himself with drawing something on a pad, feeling left out, I gr@bb£d a book and began re-ading.. Occasionally, I could feel Melvin’s gaze on me and back but I ignored it and focused on the book I had in hand.
I heard the bell, signifying the beginning of break period, I glanced at Melvin and saw he was shabbily shading the picture he had drawn and when I looked closely it was the picture of a girl and he was shading her hair with the pencil in his hand..
She had a pair of re-ading glas-ses on and was dressed in a fashionable dress with heels.
I cu-mpped my chin into my palm while my elbow stayed on the table, I stared more closely at the drawing and realized that it somehow matched my look, well except for very fancy look and long dark hair…
“Who is that?” I asked and Melvin gave me a look..
“You. isn’t it obvious?” He asked.
“Nope, cos I don’t have long hair and I’m not into heels”
“Well, I was just picturing you in a less geeky look” he said, smiling.
“And I think you look more lovely this way!” He said, giving me a flir-ty look. I looked away, packing my books.
“Well thanks but no thanks. I think I’m better this way. It’s lunch break alre-ady, let’s head to the cafe” I said.
“Yeah, sure!” He kept the drawing away and stood up..
I sighed de-eply as we made it out of clas-s to the hall.. Melvin’s right, I definitely look more pretty in a less geeky appearance but somehow, I’m stuck with this nerdy one.
I have tried leaving my hair long in the past but they get too heavy on me when I walk or want to re-ad and packing it feels like a whole lot of different task.
I just had a trim few days back and I feel more comfy having it short..
Fashion can’t just be about long hair and it’s probably not even my word..
*
After the meal, we head back to clas-s and work session c@m£ in again. We had three subjects and school went on smoothly and normally. After the work and a bit of rest time, school c@m£ to an end for the day.
Melvin and I said our byes and I head home.
Mom was home when I arrived and after a brief greeting, I head to my room, undressed and ran a quic-k shower on my b©dy..
I dressed up in a pair of sweatp@n-ts and plain blouse and head out of my room.
.
After dinner, mom and I sat on a couch in the living room, watching TV and I couldn’t help but think about how much secret I was hiding from her.
I know I couldn’t tell her all but there are some that she deserves to know and me hiding it from her for this long was starting to get bulgy in my che-st and now that I think about it, the guilt overwhelmed me more..
She nee-ds to know catching the beast wasn’t giving justice to Tracy, it was her utmost reason for taking the case up anyway..
She could loos£n up a bit..
I took in a de-ep breath as mom’s hand curled on my n£¢k and shoulder.
‘I’m sorry Trace’
“Mom?” I called and she m0@n ed an answer to me, her gaze still on the TV.
“There’s something I have to tell you!” I said and her gaze moved from the TV; to me. She loos£ned her hold on me a little so she could view my face more clearly. My f!ngersbegan intertwining themselves.
“Okay.. What is it?” She asked and I exhaled silently, giving her a look.
“I should’ve told you this a long time ago but I made a bet with Tracy that I wouldn’t” I said and her brows narrowed confusedly at me.
“Wouldn’t tell me what?” She asked, more curiously.
“T-tracy wasn’t killed by the beast!” I said and she was quiet for a split moment.. “I was there when she died, it was a hit and run case..” I st©pped to take in air.
“It wasn’t the beast, mom” I said and her face suddenly grew pale with shock.

CHAPTER 32✏️
❤Kayla’s POV❤️
.
“What!” Mom skrie-ked after I was done explaining how Tracy died and how I promised her to keep it a secret, she gave me a shocked look as her mouth opened and closed repeatedly. She was probably speechless or lost for words “How could you hide this away from me?” She asked, her voice shaking and my palms suddenly interested me, I stared at them resting on my l@ps.
“I’m sorry. I swear I wanted to tell you but.. I just couldn’t. I knew I’d be betraying Tracy if I did, I promised her I’d keep it a secret no matter what” I said, b!tt!g my lower l!pguiltily..
I should’ve told her about this sooner, ap@rt from my promise, it was the right thing to do and besides, Tracy is dead now, she’s been dead a long time ago and mom has been putting all her energy into the beast case, hoping she’d get justice for Tracy when she wouldn’t.
I should’ve done this long ago, Tracy is no longer here, it’s just me and her and the thoughts that her killer was still lur-k-ing around would’ve caused mom so much anger and sadness whereas it was someone else, someone unknown.
Even though it doesn’t change anything about Tracy’s death, it might help loos£n mom a bit.
“But this isn’t something you can keep a secret no matter what, Kay. This is something I should’ve known long ago!”
“I know! And that’s why I’m telling you now. I can’t keep it anymore and I can’t keep seeing you getting all worked up for the wrong thing!” I said, giving her a sorry look.
Mom sighed and shut her eyes and when she opened them, I saw tears built up in them. She blinked ra-pidly to curb them from falling.
“B-but the lab result proved that-
“The lab result was fake mom, it was a lie. I don’t how or who did it. I have no idea why the lab result c@m£ out that way but Tracy wasn’t killed by Mel.. That beast. She was hit by a car after being invited to a fake p@rty, I was there when she died, believe me!”I said.
She gave me a long sorrowful stare. “This is so ha-rd to take in.. All this years I’ve been.. I’ve lived with the thought that my daughter was killed by that horrible thing and-
She broke down in tears, the rest of her words dying.
I slowly reached for her palm that trembled as they grasp her knee cap when she cried with her head bent, her voice filled the living room and her whole b©dy rose and fell repeatedly.
I couldn’t st©p my tears as they crawled down my cheeks. Obviously, ap@rt from the revelation she had received from me, I had no doubt that I reopened that closed wound in her heart.
I have never seen her cry this ha-rd after Tracy’s death and burial. She kept crying even for a long time, I felt so sad and relieved at the same time that I had finally let it out to her.
A p@rt of me felt peace and wellness.
.
That night, I couldn’t go to Melvin as I had to stay with mom all throu-gh. By the time she st©pped crying, it was late and her eyes were all red and puffy, I had led her to her room and her be-d and at her will, spent the night with her.

The next morning, mom made dinner and I was glad she was fine. She didn’t bring up any discussion about Tracy as we ate dinner and as she drove me to school and I was glad.
She dropped me off at the school gate, k!$$£d me more and longer than the normal way and head for work after giving me a toothy smile.
I head to clas-s, tossed a quic-k greeting at Melvin and pushed my b©dy to my seat.
Morning clas-s went smoothly and then lunch break c@m£ next..
We went to the cafeteria, I purchased our meals and we began eating after I took Melvin’s palm.
We had ba-rely taken two bites out of our meal when two girls rushed to our table, they immediately focused on Melvin, not even sparing me a quic-k glance, it wasn’t like I cared though so I just kept eating my food.
“Hey Melvin!” The pink haired girl said and I raised my brows to give her a look, she had a hvge smile as she talked to Melvin.. I twitched my face and pu-ll-ed my gaze back to my food.
“Hey” Melvin answered, returning her smile and again I pushed my face to my meal..
“Well, I’ll be quic-k cos I still have tons of people on my list..
So my family are having a beach p@rty this weekend and it’s lasting for the whole of the weekend and I was permitted to invite some of my friends that I want to bring along and you’re on the list, so I’m inviting you” she said.
“A beach p@rty?!” Melvin’s face lit up in excitement at the words. “Sounds like so much fun!” He squealed.
“You have no idea! So you’re coming. Jamie, tick him off the list!” She instructed the other girl beside her.
“Wait.. Can I bring someone along too?” Melvin st©pped her and gave me a look, I shook my head lightly as if telling him not to.
The girl’s expression changed to a slight frown. “Who?” She asked plainly and when Melvin pointed to me, bringing both girl’s gazes to me, I almost peed in my p@n-t..
It’s surprising that I still have this vulnerable side of me.
“She?” She pointed at me with an irritated look and Melvin nodded.
She shook her head, ma-king an annoying sound with her mouth.
“You both are practically everywhere in school together” her friend finally talked, I had thought she was dumb..
“That’s true.. Is she like your girlfriend or something?” The other one asked and I rolled my eyes, staring at everywhere but my food.
“She is!” My gaze flung up at Melvin after the reply and before I could utter a word, she spoke.
“Well.. Since you have a girlfriend, you can forget about the p@rty!” She said, giving me an angry glare, I raised my brow and rolled my eyes again.. “Jamie, ru-b his name off the list!” She said, walking away.
How’s this my fault?
The Jamie girl trailed behind her, struggling with writing Melvin’s name off the list and following her, I turned to Melvin.
“Melvin, do you realise you just told those girls that I’m your girlfriend!” I asked and he nodded with a shrug.
“I know and what’s wrong with that?” He asked, gr-abbing his fork. “You’re practically the only girl I move around with, I’m sure everyone alre-ady think of you as my girlfriend” he said.
“Probably but still you shouldn’t have done that. You don’t just tell them we’re d@t!ngwhen we clearly aren’t, you should have cleared those thoughts off their minds and –
“Chill Kay, okay? And Since you’re that girl from the past, I don’t mind us d@t!ng” he said and I gave him a close look before realizing that he was serious. “And they’re right, we’re always together around here, so let’s just be b©yfri£ndand girlfriend!” He said and I sighed, giving him an amused look
“That’s not how it works Melvin, you don’t just do it because others think so!” I explained.
“Is it about love? Well, what do you feel cos I know I’m inlove with you and I’m re-ady to be your b©yfri£nd!” My spoon carelessly dropped from my hand as my eyes popped wi-de-open.
I opened my mouth but couldn’t utter a word..
“What? You’re the only girl I’ve spent so much time with, you can’t expect me not to be inlove with you!” he said plainly without any nervousness.. I gulped, lowering my gaze.
“Let’s eat up before the food gets cold,” I gr@bb£d another spoon from the tray. “And no more words, plea-se!” I said, my words cracking and my heartbeat racing fastidiously.
He gestured surrender and when he took my palm, I found myself j£rking up unusually and suddenly feeling uncomfortable.

After school I went home and met mom on the phone, she seem to be arguing with whoever the caller was.
“It’s what I want Roberto, I alre-ady made a choice and I’m not backing out on it!” She said and pu-ll-ed the phone from her ear..
“Is something wrong?” I asked her and she shook her head.
“It’s nothing! How was school?” She inquired.
“Fine!” I said.
And like that, mom stayed home until it got late, answering tons of phone calls and replying some with anger and annoyance. She hung up after another call, gr@bb£d her jacket and car keys.
“I have to go to the office, will give you a call later” she rushed her words, gave me a light pe-ck and dashed off..
I frowned, stood up and head to my room, pu-ll-ed my jacket on, gr@bb£d my backpack with some food and head to the woods.

The next morning, after a quic-k breakfast with mom; she drove me to school and all throu-gh the ride, I noticed the smile on her face..
“Mom? Is everything okay?” I asked, not being able to contend my curiosity any longer. “You’ve been on all smiles since you got back from work this morning” I said.
“It was supposed to be a surprise for you when you get back from school but I can as well tell you now!” She giggled and I gave her a more curious look.
“What surprise?” I asked.
“Firstly, I resigned from work,” she said giving me a long smile “And we’re moving!”
