( WHERE THE MISERY BEGAN )

«ZODIAC CLUB»

Mikhail and the other two men were still conversing when his phone started ringing, disrupting them.

Gregory raised a questioning brow at him. “Who is it?”

Mikhail stared at the caller ID. It was a private number and he knows exactly who it could be.

“Lottie,” He gro-aned darkly, his face hardening as anger took the better part of him.

“Are you going to pick up the call?” The Russian boss asked.

“We need a lead, don’t we?”

“Did she call with her personal number? we could ask Marcello or one of my boys to track her_”

“She is not stupid.” Mikhail cut the man off. “She called with a private number. There is no way we can track her location. We just need to find a clue from her.” He said and picked up the call.

Her voice came in immediately as he put the call on speaker mode. “Hello, Mikhail.”

“You finally called. You don’t know how much I waited for your call, Lottie.”

“You recognized my voice. Should I take that as a good sign?”

“Do whatever pleases you.”

“Then I am going to take it as a good sign. You miss me, don’t you?”

“Don’t flatter yourself. You mean absolutely nothing to me.”

“You said you were expecting my call, right?”

“I did. But I never said it was because I missed you or anything like that. Don’t be stupid, Lottie. You should be smarter than this.”

“So it must be because of that bit-ch . Isn’t it?”

“Where is she?” He grunted.

“That, I can’t tell you.”

“What exactly is your problem? Why do you keep hurting innocent people for your selfish desires? What are you going to gain from all this? My heart? Is that the prize you are striving for? Have you ever asked yourself, if your sister was never in the picture, will I still choose you?”

He heard the audible gulp from her. He must be hitting a very sensitive topic and he won’t back down now until he forces words out of her mouth.

“Will you?” She fired the question back at him.

Mikhail wasted no time to give her a simple and short answer. “No. I might have cared for you in the past but that is what friends do, don’t you agree?”

“I saw you as something more than a friend, Mikhail. You meant the whole world to me. Why can’t you see how much I love you? Why can’t it be me? Why?”

“Because it is you.” He answered.

“What do you mean by that?” She sounded confused.

He paused. “You are the problem of yourself. I asked you a question one day… If you were me, would you choose yourself?”

Lottie did not say anything.

“Do you even love yourself or better yet, know the meaning of love, Lottie? Do you?”

“I love you.” She claimed.

“No, you don’t. Love doesn’t feel this way. When you love someone, you are ready to sacrifice your all for them. You are ready to give up on anything just to see them happy. Can you do that for me?”

“I am risking my life for you, isn’t that enough proof of how much you mean to me? I promised never to let you go, remember?”

“Well, now I am asking you to let me go. I am tired of losing the people that matter to me because of you!”

Rhodes stared at Mikhail as soon as he said those words.

‘The people that matter to him? Is he referring to my stepdaughter?’ Rhodes thought to himself, still staying mute.

“What did you just say? People that matter to you?” She repeated. “Who are you talking about? Diamond, your late wife? Or Diamond, your daughter’s nanny? Which one is it?” She questioned.

Mikhail let out a de-ep sigh, ruffling his hair in agitation and frustration. The conversation was leading nowhere and it is beginning to piss him off.

“Where is she?” He asked again, ignoring her question.

Lottie sniffled. “I will kill her.”

“Don’t_” Rhodes attempted to talk but Mikhail shot him a glare giving him the “don’t you dare say a word right now.” look.

“Are you threatening me?”

“It is a promise, Mikky. If I can’t have you then no one else will, I swear on my life! The same way I killed Diamond, your wife, and my sister is the exact way I will this fuc-k ing nanny who came up from nowhere and stole you from me.”

“First of all, I was never yours, to begin with. Secondly, you dare bring the death of my wife into this. How dare you!?” He retorted.

“You must already know about what I did five years ago. Octavius must have told you everything. I don’t regret what I did back then. And I am not going to regret what I am going to do now. As long as it is for you, my love. I am ready to destroy the whole world for your sake.”

“I hate you.” He whispered memories of his late wife clouding his vision. The guilt has started haunting him over again but he refuses to show his weakness to the men seated in front of him in anticipation or the girl on a call with him. “I hate you with so much pa-ssion. You disgust me.”

“Mikhail, why… Why…” He could hear the hurt in her voice.

“You want me, right? Tell me where you are and I’m going to come over. We should both put an end to this shit, don’t you think?”

“Do you love her?” She asked him.

“Why does that matter?”

“Just answer the damn question. Do you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, my God.” They heard a thud followed by screams from a boy.

“Ma’am, are you okay?”

Rhodes’s gaze was on Mikhail, his mouth hanging open. Gregory was likewise looking very shocked. The least expected that answer from him. Or did he say that to get into Lottie? That could be the case, who knows?

Lottie was breathing very ha-rd in the other line, crying profusely.

Someone snatched the phone and said into the line. “Hello, Ca-ssano.”

“fuc-k ing Julius.” Mikhail snarled, balling his fist very tight.

“Aw. You remember me. Isn’t that amazing?” He cooed.

“I am not ready for your bullshit. Where is the lady you collided with that bit-ch to kidnap? Where is she? First, you killed my wife, and now… This? I swear you won’t escape my wrath by the time I get a hold of you. How dare you touch my wife!? How dare you?”

“It was only a deal I fulfilled, Ca-ssano. You shouldn’t blame me for her death. Anyway, you want to know where we are now?” He chuckled. “We are far away from home. But there’s a hint to find us… We are at the place where it all began.”

“A place where it all began?” Mikhail reiterated.

“Yes. You can ask Octavius. I’m sure he knows exactly what I am talking about. We give you both 24 hours to find us. And don’t you dare tell the cops anything unless we are going to kill the miserable nanny? See you when you find us.” He laughed evilly and hung up the call.

“fuc-k !” Mikhail knocked down everything on the black desk but Octavius was quick enough to grab his (Mikhail’s) phone before it crashes to the floor.

“Do you know what he is talking about?” Gregory asked Rhodes.

“I…” The man shook his head. “Honestly, I don’t.”

“Do you think he is playing games with us?”

“I don’t think so. Think carefully, Octavius. There must be something you are forgetting. We have 24 hours or else, your stepdaughter is going to die. Do you want that?”

“Of course not. I am trying to remember but I can’t. I don’t know any place he is talking about.” He stated.

“Shit. What are we going to do now?” Gregory ruffled his hair.

“Keep thinking about it, Octavius until you figure it out.”

“Why do you believe his words?” Gregory asked. “He could be lying or playing tricks with us.”

“I told you. His motive is not to kill the nanny but use her to lure her stepfather. The one who wants to get rid of the nanny is Lottie. And I don’t know why he is asking me to come over alongside him,” He nodded his head to Diamond’s stepfather. “However, I am certain he was honest.”

“It’s funny how this girl he wants to get rid of is his biological daughter. How would he react if he finds out?” Gregory asked no one in particular.

“Your daughter’s survival depends on your memory, Octavius. You must think fast so we can find her.” Mikhail told him.

Rhodes nodded his head, letting out a de-ep breath. “I will think ha-rd and fast.” He studied Mikhail’s face carefully. “However, I will like to ask you a question.”

“What is it?”

“Do you… Do you really love my daughter as you had claimed?”

Mikhail hesitated. “Now is not the right time to talk about_”

“Please answer the question. I need to know if it is true affection you feel for her or not. Diamond might not be my biological daughter but she means the whole world to me and I love her so much. I can’t risk seeing her get hurt or heartbroken. She has been throu-ghthat before and I don’t want it to happen again.”

Mikhail gulped nothing as he leaned back into the chair, twirling side to side.

«ROSA’S HOUSE»

“Hello?”

“Hey. It’s Felix.”

“Felix?” She stared at the wall clock and it reads 8:57 Pm. “How are you doing? Is anything the matter?”

“Uhm, not really. Where are you?”

“I am at home. Why do you ask?”

She heard voices and music from the background and her brows furrowed.

“Felix, where are you? And why are you calling me by this time?”

“Rose…” He paused. “I am in the club. I have been waiting patiently for your performance but I am yet to see you. Why?”

“I am not working tonight.” She answered.

“Oh. Why not…?”

She noticed the slurring in his words and the frown on her face de-epened.

“Wait, are you… drunk?” She asked.

“Me? Drunk?” He started laughing. “Of course not. Do I sound like I’m drunk?”

She was going to answer when she heard an angry voice from the other line.

“Hey, man. Watch it!”

“You watch it! Didn’t you see me standing here, huh?” Felix retorted.

“I will_”

Another voice cut off the angry one.

“Hey, let him be. Can’t you see he is drunk? Let’s just go.”

“Hmm.”

She heard receding footsteps which signifies that the boys left Felix alone.

“I thought you said you are not drunk,” Rosa stated.

“I am not.”

“Shut up. You are drunk.” She hissed. “You know what, just wait up for me. I will be right there. Don’t you dare go anywhere. Do I make myself clear?”

He laughed loudly. “Okay, baby.”

“Ba… Baby?” She was caught by surprise by the nickname he just called her. But after a few seconds, she shook her head, knocking back some senses. “Do not take anything he says to heart, Rosa. He is drunk.”

“Did you say…” He hiccupped. “Did you say something?”

“No. I will be right there.” She hung up the call and immediately went into her room to get dressed in something comfortable.

«WAREHOUSE»

“Why did you tell him our location!?” Lottie yelled angrily, poking Julius’s chest. “Why?”

“Wasn’t that the initial plan? Besides, I didn’t give him our exact location. I only have him a hint.”

“We need to kill that bit-ch right now before they arrive.”

“We are not touching anybody, Lottie. I still need her alive to lure Octavius here.”

“Do you think I care about you and Octavius? Get away from my sight!” She stood up to her feet and started walking towards the room where they locked the girls up.

Julius rushed towards her and grabbed a hold of her hand, bringing her steps to halt.

“I. Said. Nobody. Is. Touching. Her.” He gro-aned, no ounce of emotion in his voice.

She rou-ghly pulled her wrist from his grasp, glaring at him. “Why do you care about what happens to her? Why does it matter whether she dies now or not?”

“This wasn’t the deal we agreed on. You are not going to be the only one who gains from this. You want to kill her? Fine, I don’t bloody give a shit. But as I said, no one is going close to harm her until I see Octavius here.”

“You are going to regret this decision that you just made, Julius. Trust me.” She walked away, stepping out of the warehouse.

“Did she just threaten me?” He mumbled. “What the fuc-k is her problem?”

«ZODIAC CLUB»

Rosalie entered the busy club, looking around for Felix.

She finally saw him with Jeremiah in the bar, chatting. Lexi was also with the boys.

“Hey,” She approached them. “Lexi.” The two hugs hug-ged each other.

“How are you, Rosalie?” Lexi asked.

“I’m fine.”

“What are you doing here? Isn’t today your day off?” Jerry asked.

“Yeah… It is. But apparently, someone called me over.” She moved her gaze to Felix. “How long has he been driving?”

“Long enough to get him drunk.” Lexi simply asked as she took the last drop of her drink and tossed the empty shot over to Jerry. “I have work to do. Booty to shake and money to gain. See ya around.” She winked and left.

Rosa chuckled and sat down beside Felix who was already sleeping, his head resting on the bar table.

“Need a drink?” Jerry offered.

“Uhm…”

“Don’t worry, I will mix you one of my favorites. You’re gonna love it.” He grinned and started mixing the drinks.

“One of your favorites, you say.” She smiled.

He nodded. “Yeah.”

By the time he was done, he gave her the glas-sshot of the mixed drink.

“Try it.” He urged, excitedly.

“Wait a minute, is this a new recipe you just came up with?”

“Uh, yup.”

“What the hell? And you want me to drink it? What if it su-cks?”

“Ouch. That really hurt me.” He teased. “Come on, try it. You might love it.”

“I thought you said it was your favorite drink,” She gave him the ‘did you lie to get me to drink this?’ look.

Jerry chuckled, throwing his hands in the air. “Okay, you caught me.”

“I knew it.” She stared at the drink one more time and then, gave it a try. “Woah, it’s amazing. How did you come up with something as wonderful as this?”

He shrugged. “What can I say?”

She took another sip, mo-aning at the delicious taste. It was an alcoholic drink but tasted like none – it tasted more like strawberry. And strawberry happens to be one of her best fruit.

“Is this part of the drink menu?” She asked.

“No, but I can add it if it’s okay.”

“It is.” She gave him a thumbs up. “Trust me.”

“I trust you.” He blunted out. Both were caught by surprise at what he said. “Uh.. Well, you know about my feelings for you, anyway. No need to act embarra-ssed by saying something like this. You don’t mind my honest answer, right?”

“What? No. Uhm, no. Of course not.”

He smiled. “Thank you. Let me make one more glas-sof my special recipe.”

“Whoo! Can’t wait.” She giggled.

«HOTEL ROOM»

Rhodes was just stepping inside the hotel room when he heard an angry voice.

“What are you doing here?”

“Honey,”

“Don’t call me that.” She cut him off. “Please leave. I don’t know where you want to go and I don’t care but you and I can’t stay under the same roof. Go.”

“Elodie, please hear me out.” He attempted to reach out to touch her but she quickly pulled away, creating a safe distance between the both of them.

“Don’t touch me.” She started crying. “This is all your fault. You caused this. You knew about that bit-ch , why didn’t you do anything about it? Why did you keep quiet instead?”

“I thought I had everything under control.”

“And now that you don’t? What are you going to do now?”

Rhodes stayed quiet, his head hanging low.

“I hate you. I do not want to see your stupid face, Rhodes. It disgusts me.” She cried harder. “My daughter is missing. And guess what, the last time she went missing… I didn’t give a fuc-k because I wanted her gone. I blamed her for my misery when the ones to be blamed is you and Julius. You bought caused me so much pain. I can never forget that warehouse where that idiot took away my vi-rginity. Because after that day, my misery started.”

Rhodes pinched his brows together, pursing his li-ps as he lifted his head. “The warehouse…”

( “We are at the place where it all began. Ask Octavius. I’m certain he knows what I’m talking about.” )

“That’s it. The warehouse.” He quickly pulled out his phone and dialed Mikhail’s line.

“What is wrong with you? I am talking about something_”

“Honey, you’ve just cracked up a puzzle. Don’t worry, we are going to find Diamond.”

Mikhail picked up the call. “Hello?”

“Ca-ssano. I think I know where they are.”

TBC.
